What I love about Coochie is.... its beauty, lifestyle and the

incredible people I have been privileged to meet.

As a child I was.... a pragmatic farm girl!

The question I'm most often asked is.... Why? (by my

three year old)

My greatest achievement (this week) is.... handing in my

confirmation paper for my PhD.

My greatest wish is... for all of us (me also, maybe

particularly) to show a little more tolerance and kindness

toward one another. What we see of each other is often only

a snapshot in the context of a whole day, week, month and

life.

A little less judgement and a little more trying to understand

one another. If that can start on our little island home, then

surely that will contribute to the creation of a better world.

On the hammock with Michelle (Moze) Harris…

My work as an artist at times takes

me away from Coochiemudlo Island

- even overseas - to places where I

can create and enjoy the atmosphere

of producing something in a

different country and a different

culture that everybody can

appreciate.

Where ever I go I carry a visual

diary and draw thumb nail sketches

to translate perhaps to larger pieces

of art when I am home.

For the past few years I have had the

opportunity and honour to work and

teach art with children in less

developed countries like P.N.G. and

India.

This has been a remarkable

experience for me and it has taught

me to appreciate the art in other

forms in other countries.

In an isolated village in P.N.G. 76

children spent a week with me

making a decorative fence for the

school, made out of their own local

materials, coconuts and palm

fronds. Each child had to decorate

their own work on the coconuts.

Apart from painting, my most

recent work has been a large paper

mache sculpture entered in the

Jindabyne “Sculptures by the Lake

Exhibition”.

This was called “Nuclear

Meltdown” after the devastation in

Japan this year.

It was too big to bring home and is

still in the mountains.

Coochiemudlo Island goes Butt Free! A recent initiative by Keep Australia Beautiful Queensland, in partnership with Redlands City

Council, has seen Coochiemudlo Island in Moreton Bay declared Australia's first 'butt-free island'.

New signage has been erected on the island and personal ashtrays (with all proceeds going to

KABQ) are available at island shops.

According to Redland City Mayor Melva Hobson 'Our community has made it clear how important

the bay and natural environment is to the qualilty of life here, and keeping cigarette butts out of the

bay is one way we can protect our coastal area'.

Keep Australia Beautiful Queensland's CEO Rick Burnett said 'Coochie is just the start of our Butt-

Free Island concept. We want to spread it to other islands in Moreton Bay as well as go up and down

the Queensland Coast'.

Peter Dowling MP - Member for Redlands

With an election due to be called anytime I am still pushing for regulation of the barge service to

Coochiemudlo Island. Regulation will not only provide certainty to the operator in running his/her business,

it will ensure a well run service is maintained for the residents and visitors to Coochie.

I will continue to push for this and appreciate the support that the residents of Coochie have shown. I have

listened to their ideas and suggestions and their requests for a regulated barge service. I will continue to keep

you posted on this issue.

Dredging appears to be on hold with Redland City Council and the State Government negotiating

responsibility again. Sadly if Council stalls long enough it is likely that the State Government will withdraw

funding and no further action will take place.

A report into the Victoria Point and Coochiemudlo Island jetties accessibility upgrade options and options

analysis has been given to Council by the State Government. Unfortunately on requesting access to this

report, it has been denied. What is disappointing is that RCC and the State Government are playing silly

buggers where Coochie residents are the victims. Consequently I have written to the Minister formally

requesting a copy of this report. Most of us remember the last jetty - how many times did we have to get that

fixed.

I am looking forward to another wonderful Flinders Day Celebration. This is always a wonderful day and I

look forward to catching up with many of you then.

Peter Dowling

Coochiemudlo Island RSL Sub-

Branch and TS Diamantina

Coochiemudlo Island RSL Sub-Branch have agreed to

sponsor the Training Ship Diamantina. June 25th saw our

first official involvement with TS Diamantina with the

attendance of the committee and 17 members to the

Inaugural Mess Dinner which was held to celebrate the

3rd year of TS Diamantina's commission. Full dress

uniforms and formal wear were a must. How wonderful to

see such elegance on Coochiemudlo.

The dinner was attended by local dignitaries including

Peter Dowling MP and representatives from the Cleveland

and Russell Island RSL's.

During the course of the evening it was with great

pleasure Colin Cole, President of the Coochiemudlo Island

RSL Sub-Branch was able to hand over a cheque to TS

Diamantina which will enable 3 cadets to gain their

powerboat licences and training.

It was a great night especially with the Passing of the Port

which is a tradition at Navy Mess Dinners and passing of

the barrel to collect fines for certain infringements during

the evening. A delightful way in which to fundraise.

A great night was had by all. Congratulations to

Coochiemudlo Island RSL Sub-Branch Members who

attended - it was a wonderful start to an affiliation with TS

Diamantina.

Upgrades to Ferry Terminals

According to Redland Council, the Queensland

Government has offered to fund in excess of $11

million worth of marine transport infrastructure

through a series of projects to be completed in

conjunction with Redland City Council.

The state government funding, provided through the

Department of Transport and Main Roads, will allow

for improvements to existing marine transport

infrastructure including barges and pontoons, as well

as dredging works, creating easier, more consistent

access for passenger ferry and barge services.

Project funding offered to Redland City Council

includes:

$1,750,000 towards the upgrade of the

Coochiemudlo Island ferry terminal

$2,500,000 for upgrades to the Victoria

Point ferry terminal

up to $6,000,000 for dredging works at

Victoria Point and other Harbours

Planned upgrades to jetties and boat ramps will

address disability and senior access to marine

transport. The marine transport infrastructure

improvement projects will be completed over a three

year period, The first area to be dredged will be at

Victoria Point.

Residents will be notified of any interruptions caused

by the individual projects when works commence.
