Bowling Club may have no choice but to close their doors for good.

The club has been open since 1964, and once served as the heart of the community. How-ever a lack of members means they may have to close at the end of the season.

The club currently has 10 financial members and 15 social members, and they are now looking to increase this number for their upcoming season.

Club president Kerry Perreau says membership numbers have dwindled over the last few years.

“At one stage years ago we had 120 members, but different things have happened and the numbers have dropped off.

“If we don’t get new members it will be the end of the club. Hopefully it won’t come to that.”

By Nikki PapatsoumasIsland Bay Butchery has once again

taken out medals at the annual Devro New Zealand Sausage Competition, which was held earlier this month.

Supreme winners of the competi-tion last year, this year the butchery picked up a gold award for their black pudding in the Rounds Category and a Silver award for their Bavarian sausage in the pre-cooked/barbecue category.

Owner Don Andrews says he is extremely happy with this year’s results, and although the butchery has a reputation for carrying some of the best sausages in Wellington he remains down to earth.

This year there were 460 entries, and Don says to be part of the fi ve per cent of competitors to pick up an award is an achievement in itself.

“It’s an achievement for our butch-

ery to compete against all the big boys.

“We are over the moon, all of our hard work has paid off, that’s what I get a kick out of and it makes it all worthwhile.”

Don says he has come a long way since he was given a recipe for a continental sausage 25 years ago.

“With that recipe I could just go from there and create new fl avours.”

He says part of his secret is to con-stantly work on tweaking his recipes, to make fl avours bigger and better.

“With our black pudding, we have been working on that for the last two years to perfect it.

“Nothing is ever perfect we can always work on them and we are still always tweaking our products.”

The butchery stock over 50 fl avours of sausages, and will celebrate 25 years of business next April.

The club survives through mem-bership fees, and through leasing a neighbouring property which they own.

Kerry says there are concerns that their lease may not be re-newed when the council revises its decision in July next year, due to low membership.

They own their club rooms, but lease the majority of their green from the Wellington City Council.

Leases are renewed in accord-ance with the council’s leases policy for community and recrea-tion groups.

According to the assessment criteria the group must be sustain-able in terms of membership and/or users of the service, for the term of the lease.

Council spokesperson Clay-

ton Anderson says based on assessment criteria and on current membership numbers, it would be hard for offi cers to recommend to councillors a lease renewal for the club.

However he says the decision ultimately sits with councillors.

Southern ward councillor Paul Eagle says we are seeing the closure of many bowling clubs across the city.

“This is a community facility that has proudly served the needs of the community for 66 years.

“It’s vital that council carefully consider what the future needs of the people who live here are before saying times up.”

The club had what they are anticipating would have been their last open day on October 19, in an attempt to entice new members to the club.

Now Kerry says they have to wait and see what will come next.

“I have always been an optimist rather than a pessimist. I always live in hope, we will see how we go.”

By Nikki PapatsoumasAfter decades of hard work the

All Saints Church in Hataitai will fi nally open the doors to its new centre this Saturday.

The new centre cost $2m to complete, and has been funded by the sacrifi cial giving of All Saints members over many decades as well as some historic property funds.

The project itself may have only taken 11 months to fi nish, however Vicar the Rev Simon Winn says the completion marks years of hard work by All Saints members past and present.

“The baton has been passed on from decade to decade, from person to person, and we are the ones crossing the fi nish line.

“November 2 will be a day when we are remembering and giving thanks for the efforts and energy of generations of local people who have worked to see this realised.”

The new centre features a hall with the capacity to fi t 180 peo-ple, kitchen, meeting room and offi ces. It replaces the previous wooden hall that was built in the 1890’s.

Decades of work realised

The church is now extending an invitation to the entire com-munity to come and help them celebrate this Saturday.

A day of activities has been planned including sausage sizzle, scavenger hunt, bouncy castle and mainly music session for preschoolers.

There will also be performanc-

es by the Gjelsten family string trio, a Burmese choir and dancers and Peter Quin the bubble man.

The centre will be offi cially blessed and opened at 2pm by Anglican Bishop Justin Duck-worth and Methodist Church superintendent Tony Bell.

The church will also be open throughout the day and there

will be a prayer space for people to come and be, light a candle or leave prayer requests.

The All Saints Church will celebrate the opening of their new church centre on Saturday November 2 from 10.30am, for more information head to www.allsaints.org.nz

By Nikki PapatsoumasA Miramar local has walked

away a whole lot richer after tak-ing part in the Discover Kilbirnie promotion, which ran through the month of September.

Trish Bathard, a teacher from Miramar Central School, won $2000 cash after shopping at Liz’s Cultural Designs on Coutts Street in Kilbirnie.

The store stocks a range of hand crafted gifts and organic products from Rarotonga, Sa-moa, Fiji and Hawaii.

Seventy shops and businesses were involved in the Discover Kilbirnie promotion, a joint promotion between the Kilbirnie Business Network and the Wel-

lington City Council. As well as a fi nal draw for a

cash prize of $2000, there were weekly draws with mystery prizes donated by local busi-nesses.

Trish says winning came as a complete surprise, after purchas-ing items from the store for her schools Pasifi ka week.

“It’s very exciting I live locally, and this store is a place I come to fairly regularly.”

She says now she looks forward to coming back to Kilbirnie to spend some of her prize money, and sharing the rest with family.

Chair of the Kilbirnie Business Network Bruce Welsh says they are pleased to have a winner

from one of their little shops in the area.

“It’s nice that the variety of shops has been acknowledged and supported through the

promotion.”He says they now look forward

to their next Discover Kilbirnie promotion, which will kick off in November.

By Nikki PapatsoumasNew Zealand’s best loved pie is back in action

after almost two decades. From last Tuesday Newtown McDonalds

have been offering customers the chance to once again relive the Georgie Pie experience, something that until now has not been available since the 1990’s.

The Newtown store is one of the fi rst stores in Wellington to offer Georgie Pie, alongside the Petone and Lower Hutt Stores.

Restaurant manager Oleni Peniata say they have been extremely popular, with the store selling 220 of their steak mince ‘n’ cheese pies last Tuesday, and 240 pies on Wednesday.

“People have been ringing in and asking for the pies, we have been selling them for breakfast as well.

“If they want it we can make it for them.”The pie follows the exact recipe of the original

pies, except the MSG has been removed and Oleni says customers have been saying the pies taste exactly how they remember them.

Georgie Pie hits Wellington after being trialed in Auckland and Hamilton since May, and all stores nationwide are expected to stock the pies by the middle of next year.

Georgie Pie is back

Restaurant manager Oleni Peniata says the steak mince ‘n’ cheese pies have been fl ying out the door since being reintroduced in store last Tuesday.

By Nikki PapatsoumasA teacher from St Catherine’s Col-

lege in Kilbirnie has been honoured with an award for her hard work and dedication.

Senior Dean and Head of English at St Catherine's College Kathy Ryan, was presented with a Pride of Workmanship award from the Rotary Club of Wellington South earlier this month.

Ms Ryan was nominated for the award by former deputy principal of the school Maria Hubbard, and was one of nine deserving people to have received an award.

Her nomination letter highlights her exceptional dedication to her job, and the respect she has from staff and students.

Ms Ryan remains very modest when it comes to her win.

“It is very nice but I do think there are plenty of staff members here at

the school who are equally deserving and put in hours of hard, hard work.”

She says a highlight of the experi-ence was being asked to speak on behalf of the recipients at the ceremony.

“I was asked to speak on behalf of all the nominees and what came through clearly is that even though we are all very different people, we all seemed to have a common and tremendous commitment and loyalty to our jobs.”

Ms Ryan has been at St Catherine’s College for 15 years now, and says she can’t imagine working anywhere else.

“I wouldn’t teach anywhere else. This is defi nitely the place for me to work. As a mercy school it has the particular charisma, respect, compassion and justice that sits in-credibly well with my own personal ethos.”

By Nikki PapatsoumasOld classic art prints will be brought

back to life this November for The Art Resuscitation Project.

Newtown local and artist Paul Forrest has spent this year working on the project, which he is now excited to share with the wider community.

Paul has spent the year trawling second hand stores for old art work that has interested him - works he believed deserved to be appreciated again.

He has then painted over these old works, and tapped into them using his feeling and intuition, something he says has allowed him to “get in the zone” with the original artists.

Paul says he has always had a fas-cination with the mathematics of compositional structure, and this has inspired his latest project.

“I have used dots, lines and marks in such a way that it looks like it belongs in the picture.

“They are a bit like maps for your eyes, I am taking your eyes for a journey around the composition of the painting.”

Paul has used acrylic paint fi rst, so the original art is not damaged, and then painted over this with a high quality oil paint.

Artists include Canaletto, John Gully, Renoir, Gainsborough, Constable, Corot, Vermeer and a raft of unknowns. Although most are prints there are also some originals and photos.

Paul says in the process of breathing life back into these paintings he has tried to remain respectful to the original

artist.“I would like to think if they saw these

paintings they would be delighted with what I have done. I am trying to do it in a respectful way.”

The Art Resuscitation Project will run for ten days from November 8, at Paul’s studio at 146 Riddiford Street in Newtown.

WELCOME BACK GEORGIE PIEMy time in Wellington spans some 15 years and as I refl ect on these amazing years, I know that I have been part of two great brands in New Zealand.

As the owner/operator of McDonald’s Newtown and Basin Reserve, many of my loyal customers will know that I came from Wellington to open one of the fi rst Georgie Pie Restaurants in New Zealand.

The demise of Georgie Pie is well known and if I have come to know one thing in life, it is that ‘change is constant’ in our lives.

My next business opportunity came with McDonald’s and a greater journey that I never could have imagined.

I have lived and breathed the culture of McDonald’s and as they say – ‘I have ketchup in my veins.’

However, like so many of you, I have never forgotten the iconic brand that was Georgie Pie. How many times have those who knew

it passionately, shared stories about their favourite Georgie Pie experience, McDonald’s recognised that passion of the people, and therefore we now have the return of Georgie Pie.

It is my absolute pleasure to let you know that ‘the legend is back’ – Georgie Pie returns to Newtown under the McDonald’s banner effective immediately and Basin Reserve McDonald’s on the 4th of November 2013.

We will be serving the legendary Georgie Pie Steak, Mince & Cheese complete with fries to make sure you can once again dip into the gravy!

There may be a distinct sense of déjà vu, but I can assure you this is something you don’t want to miss.

Let us now enjoy and celebrate this exciting and momentous day!

By Nikki PapatsoumasParents have the chance to vote for the

‘goodies’ and the ‘baddies’ of the kids food industry as part of the 2013 Munch Awards.

Munch is an on line company that is dedicated to promoting healthy living and eating for children.

Island Bay resident and director Anna Bordignon was a lawyer for 12 years before having her fi rst child.

Anna says she realised how little infor-mation there was about kids food, which inspired her to create the website www.munch.co.nz.

The online database now has a network of over 5000 parents, grandparents, and carers who are interested in improving the food, food products and physical activity

environments of New Zealand children. As part of this the Munch Awards are

held, giving people the opportunity to have their say about the food industry in relation to their children.

The award is made up of six categories including best kids food product, kitchen product, marketing campaign and food blog and worst kids food product and marketing campaign.

Anna says the awards are created to create awareness, and give parents the opportunity to have their say.

Voting will close on October 29, and results will be announced on November 1.

Having an active social life is some-thing many people take for granted, but for others, especially older people, it can sometimes seem out of reach.

That’s where volunteers at Enliven’s Kilmarnock Heights Home really step up.

Resident Val Hearn and long-standing volunteer Bev Simonsen explain what a difference volunteers can make.

Bev has been visiting Kilmarnock Heights home as a volunteer for the last six years.

She spends time chatting with residents about anything from cur-rent affairs, to what they have had for dinner!

Val and Bev first met when Val was admitted to hospital after having a stroke.

“It was so nice to see a smiling face,” says Val.

“Bev explained to me that she had also had a stroke in the past - it was comforting to know she understood what I was going through, and it gave me a sense of hope for the future.”

Their shared experience of stroke recovery has formed a strong bond.

“Sometimes we just sit and chat,” says Bev.

“We’ve both been through the same thing, so it’s nice that we can talk about our experiences and give each other support.”

At other times the pair head out to the local shops.

“We go shopping or for a coffee together. It’s so nice to have a shop-ping partner again!” says Val, who worked in retail for much of her life.

“Bev is a fantastic woman who does wonderful work. I look forward to her visits every week, and it is great to get out and about with her. It means a lot to me that she gives some of her time to come and see me – she is a good friend.”

Kilmarnock Heights Home Manag-er, Bronwyn Drennan says volunteers like Bev are unaware of the positive difference that they make to the lives of others.

“We want to say a big thank you to all of our volunteers who donate

their time and energy to improving the lives of our residents.

“If anyone out there wants to get involved, even if it’s just for an hour a week, we’d love to hear from them! In particular, we are looking for some people who can drive our van on outings.”

Owners of Kilbirnie Pharmacy Geoff Kiddle and Pam Bremford are absolutely delighted to open the doors of their brand new Bay Road store this week. The move marks yet another milestone for the iconic pharmacy, which has been in business since before World War II.In that time, this is only the third time the busi-ness has moved, this time eight doors down to a vacant store on Bay Road.Originally known as the Claud T Arthur Phar-macy, the business was initially situated on the corner of Onepu Road and Coutts Street.Owner Claud Arthur later sold the business to Barbara Blackiston, who changed the name to Kilbirnie Pharmacy. She owned and operated the business for a dec-ade, before selling it on to Ken Aickin. It was Ken who shifted the business to Bay Road in March of 1975.Prior to purchasing the business, Pam completed her internship under Ken and worked in the phar-macy for six years in the 1980’s.Geoff and Pam purchased the pharmacy in 2003, and over the past ten years have seen the busi-ness grow signifi cantly, to the point where they are short of space in their existing building.Pam says it was important for her and Geoff

to keep the business on Bay Road, not only be-cause they believe it is an “exciting place to be,” but to also remain convenient for their customers.Moving into larger premises means the couple are able to do the things they have always want-ed to. This includes having a pharmacist on the fl oor at all times, which Pam says is much more inter-active for the customer.“Customers come to the pharmacy for all sorts of reasons, but a key reason is to seek advice on a range of products and conditions. We want to make that as easy as possible for the customer to be able to talk to a health professional about any concerns they may have.” The pharmacy will now be open seven days a week, the store will also have an entrance from Onepu Road, along with dedicated customer car parking. This is going to be a real plus for not only the elderly but also Mums with young children or anyone who has diffi culty with their mobilityThe new store will also feature two private con-sultation rooms, where customers can talk with pharmacists away from the shop fl oor.“It will be great to have space where customers can sit down and not be disturbed, so they get

the undivided attention of the pharmacist,” says Pam.

Here pharmacists will be able to help answer any personal health queries. Pharmacists have a wealth of know-ledge about medicines, such as when and how to take them. They can also offer advice on ways and techniques to ensure that doses are remembered, such as blister packs and dose time reminders. “All our pharmacists are keen to work alongside the individual so that they get the best possible outcome from their medicines,” says Pam.Geoff says all the team members are looking forward to offering customers the same great service the pharmacy is known for but in a more spacious and modern en-vironment.“It’s taking the pharmacy into the 21st century, mak-ing it a friendly approachable

Maximize the space and effi ciency of your small kitchen with these design tips, sure to spark some renovation inspiration.

Open fl oor planMake your small kitchen feel larger by

following an open fl oor plan. Allow the space to carefully fl ow into

the living or dining room. Change the wall colors from room to room to visually separate the two spaces.

Clean huesMake a small kitchen feel open and airy

by using a light color palette and plenty of natural light.

Downsized appliancesLight wood cabinetry and a large, open

window prevent small, apartment-style kitchen from feeling cramped.

In an extra-tiny kitchen, downsizing is the best way to go. A pint-sized stove, range hood, microwave and kitchen table are in proportion to the space and take up less space than their large predecessors.

Sleek and simpleSleek, clean lines in a kitchen prevent

the space from looking or feeling small and cluttered. When using the deep-toned cabinetry, keep the surrounding walls and countertops neutral for a more balanced look.

Proper lightingSmall kitchens are often fi lled with the

wrong lighting, making the space feel dim and enclosed.

Using pendant lights on the ceiling and fl uorescent lighting below the cabinets will gracefully cast light off the countertops and backsplash, visually expanding the space and uplifting the overall tone and mood

Extra storageTake advantage of extra wall space by

adding additional cabinetry and drawers. This will keep kitchen essentials organ-

ized and stored, while clearing up the countertops.

Simple design tips for tiny kitchens

Storage can make all the diff erence when it comes to utilising space in your kitchen. Hooks are a great way of keeping things clutter free

Building, Renovating orDecorating?

Being qualifi ed in the building industry is all about being recognised for the skills that you bring to the job.

The building industry talks about qualifi -cations as being competency based – what that means is that at the completion of your qualification you will be competent to perform as a qualifi ed tradesmen in your specifi c area.

The qualification is simply the rubber stamp to say to everyone – yes you can do the job.

The BCITO will allocate you with a Train-ing Advisor who will manage your progress through the qualifi cation.

All Training Advisors are tradesmen who are committed to helping people progress through to achieving their qualifi cation.

They do more than just assessing compe-tence – they are advising and coaching the best way to approach tasks and workload and with your employer they make up the coaching team.

Completing qualifi cations will not be easy and there may be times when you simply want to give up.

At the BCITO so many young people achieving their qualifi cations and going on to live their dreams that were encourage to always stay focussed and keep striving for their goals.

A qualifi cation with the BCITO is not the

end goal – it is an important step to your career and personal satisfaction.

What apprenticeships are right for you?An apprentice is somebody who works

under a skilled professional in order to learn a trade and become qualifi ed in it.

There are apprenticeships in almost every different area of the building and construc-tion industry.

Which apprenticeship is right for you will depend on your interests, your experience and the opportunities in your region.

Apprenticeships are based on compe-tency – it’s all about learning on the job and demonstrating you have the knowledge and skill to complete a task.

This means apprenticeships take no more or less time than it takes for you to show you can demonstrate your skill to a commercial standard.

What are my next steps? The key step is to fi nd an employer who is

prepared to take you on as an Apprentice.Once you have approval from your

employer to begin an apprenticeship please contact the BCITO on 0800 422 486.

We will arrange for a BCITO representa-tive to visit you and your employer.

The representative will explain how the apprenticeship works and complete the necessary paperwork to get you started.

Are you tired of windows that leak wind, weep water and need constant maintenance?

PVC doors and windows are the norm in the UK, Europe and the USA.

They give superior insulation, never need painting and can be retrofi tted into most existing windows.

The PVC frame doesn’t conduct cold or heat, which not only improves the insula-tion but means condensation is signifi cantly reduced.

Double glazing is standard, with options for E-glass and argon fi lling.

LETTERS to the editor

Dear Ed,So the sun has gone down on the

Empire.Even the plant pots at the door have

been removed, leaving their padlocks lying there. Intriguing sight, padlocked plant pots.

Sigh - there was a bus stop at the door for the Greenies, a cycle rack and of course plenty of free parking for the gas guzzlers.

There was a charming little play area in a corner of the cafe for the littlies and you could always see people sitting on the couches enjoying their coffees.

Farewell to the White Room, with its original and quirky selection of

handcrafts for sale. Hope they fi nd new premises.

Relief expressed by members of our household that the Penthouse managers will continue to honour Empire gift vouchers because there are ALWAYS people who take for ever to redeem their Xmas gifts.

And now, land agents will have to surgically remove any reference to local cinemas in the wording of advertise-ments for Island Bay properties lest they expose themselves as having out of date knowledge of the Island Bay area.

By Nikki PapatsoumasThe Salvation Army in Kil-

Children are encouraged to ditch their scary costumes, and dress up in fl uro for their Fluro Frenzy Light Party.

The party, will be held at Lyall Bay School this Thurs-day, and organiser Captain Jeannine Serevi says it is set to be a fantastic safe environment for the whole family.

A giant bouncy castle, disco, face painting, sausage siz-zle, sponge throw and prizes for the most creative fluro

“It helps keep kid safe off the street, and we are keeping the whole event free for the entire community,” says Jeannine.

The Fluro Frenzy Light Party will be held this Thursday October 31 from 6pm to 8pm at Lyall Bay School.

Families are encouraged to come along to the Salvation Army Light Party dressed in their brightest fl uro for Halloween this year.

By Nikki PapatsoumasFor the second time the Hound Lounge in Miramar are holding

their annual Halloween competition. The Hound Lounge, which offers pet sitting, dog walking,

dog training and dog day care services, have invited customers to dress up their dogs in their spookiest Halloween costumes.

The photos are now available to be viewed on their Facebook page, and the photo which has the most likes by this Thursday (Halloween) will win a goodie bag.

The prize includes a puzzle ball, an erratic ball, a chomp and chew bone and a custom collar that will be made specifi cally for the winner.

Entries closed last week and supervisor Anna Painter says now they want to see the photos get as many votes as possible.

Among the nine entrants this year is a fairy, a cowboy and a devil and Anna says she thinks people love to get their furry friends involved in the fun.

“It is about getting into the spirit of something fun, it’s all about fun really.”

The Hound Lounge has been open for three years now, and Anna says with an average of 25 dogs a day they continue to become more popular.

“We have owners who come in that are going to work and they want an outlet for their dogs, and here dogs can let off all their steam.

“Dogs are pack animals and they need to be socialised at a young age, and this is a great place for them to do it.”

To vote in the Halloween competition, head to the Hound Lounge Facebook page.

Earlier this month Miramar locals partied in pink to raise money for a great cause.

Around 50 supporters and a dozen Zumba fitness instructors attended the annual ‘Party in Pink’ Zumbathon event, which was held at Miramar Holy Cross.

The event is held to ra ise money for the Zumba Global Re-search Grant for Breast Cancer Prevention, and this year more than $1300 was raised.

The event was organised by

Miramar Zumba inst ructor Swan de Avio DeSilva, who says the ‘Party in Pink’ campaign is one she is proud to be involved in.

“Unfor tunately most of us know someone who is affected by breast cancer, which is why it is so important for us to keep raising funds to assist research into breast cancer prevention.

“The campaign allows us to bring together the community no matter what age or fitness level

to have some fun, get fit and help fund research for a preventative solution to this critical disease.”

The ‘Party in Pink’ campaign will be held over the next three years, with the ultimate goal of raising $3 million to fund stud-ies that will help prevent breast cancer on a global scale.

By Nikki PapatsoumasAfter competing against coun-

tries from all around the world, Wellington based Infi nite dance crew have walked away as World Champions.

The win comes after the crew travelled to Serbia earlier this month, to compete in the Hip Hop Unite World Champion-ships.

Infi nite dance crew was formed in 2008 and is made up of 10 girls between the ages of 16 to 28.

They took out the top spot in the adult section of the competi-tion in front of Russia and South Africa, and Coach Libby Calder says they couldn’t be any more thrilled with the win.

“It still feels a bit surreal to have won the world champs. When they announced that Russia was placed second and we knew that we had won, it was the greatest feeling ever.

“We all felt a huge sense of accomplishment. We had fi nally

done it, after four years of hard work.”

The team qualifi ed to compete after winning the New Zealand Nationals in June and were the only New Zealand team at the competition.

They have taken out the top spot at the New Zealand Nationals for the past four years.

Libby says their routine was unique because they played on being strong females, something they considered a strength.

“We also pushed for comedic value in our locking and our routine had a defi nite Kiwi feel right from the start,” she says.

The team had to fundraise $50,000 for the trip, and say they are pleased to have won 1100 euros in prize money.

However Libby says nothing beats the glory, and for them win-ning was a highlight of the trip.

“I'd say the biggest highlight of the trip was definitely the win. Knowing we had made our

Dance crew take out world champs

country proud and that the other competing countries respected us and praised us when we won.”

The girls are now having a short

holiday in Greece before they return to New Zealand.

“We can't wait to come back to New Zealand to inspire our dance

students and our communities with stories of our experience at the world champs,” Libby says.

Kiwi Pro Wrestling's (KPW) seventh 'Halloween Howl' event will be unleashed at Wellington High School on November 2.

The annual family-friendly wrestling event is KPW's biggest show of the year and sees wres-tlers from all over the country gather to battle in a showcase of professional wrestling.

Getting into the Halloween spirit, fans are encouraged to dress up as their favourite ghost, witch or ghoul to fully enter into the Halloween spirit of the event.

At the event all three KPW championship titles will be contested, and the main event is a never seen before "Three Champions" match.

This pits three champions from three separate pro wrestling companies together in the one ring to determine who the best is.

Competing in the Three Cham-pions match will be heavyweight champion of New Zealand Wide Pro Wrestling (NZWPW) Ben Mana and Southern Champion-

ship Wrestling (SCW) champion Roughguts.

The third space in the match is saved for the new KPW cham-pion, who will be crowned on the night.

The KPW Championship was recently vacated because (former champ) Whetu the Maori War-rior was sadly unable to meet his

title defence obligations. This means that KPW has

selected the two top contenders, and have scheduled a KPW title match for "Halloween Howl 7".

For more information on this Saturday’s event, follow KPW on the web at www.kiwiprow-restling.co.nz

By Dave CramptonThis year’s Sky Show

fireworks display over Wellington Harbour – usually held on November 5 – is to be delayed till Saturday November 9 to give more people the chance to enjoy the spec-tacle.

Guy Fawkes night falls on a Tuesday this year.

The Wellington City Council’s Events Man-ager, Warrick Dent, says people with young chil-dren can fi nd getting to and from a mid-week event starting at 9pm dif-fi cult.

“We believe that by holding the fireworks event on a Saturday we can encourage more fami-lies to attend, providing

a great opportunity for more of the community to enjoy the show.”

The Council has re-ceived a considerable amount of feedback from the public that has sought to have the fireworks shifted to the weekend rather than on a week-night.

“This year the 5th of No-vember falls on a Tuesday. We believe most people – especially families with youngsters - will far pre-fer to take a more relaxed approach and watch the display on the Saturday night,” Mr Dent says.

“People with young children can fi nd getting to and from a mid-week event starting at 9pm dif-ficult. We believe that

by holding the fi reworks event on a Saturday we can encourage more fami-lies to attend, providing a great opportunity for more of the community to enjoy the show.”

The Council is consider-ing making the annual event on a weekend each year.

“A regular weekend event date opens up the potential to create a day-time event in the lead up to fireworks display in the evening, and we’ll be looking at the opportuni-ties to grow the event in the future,” Mr Dent says.

The postponement date will be the following night, Sunday 10 No-vember at 9pm.

Guy Fawkes show delayed

Last week Wellington Zoo announced they would be welcoming 27 Eastern Otago Skinks to their family.

This will be part of an on-going col-laboration with the Department of Conservation’s Grand and Otago Skink Recovery Programme.

Otago Skinks are New Zealand's larg-est lizard species, also known as Giant Skinks. They are closely related to the Grand Skink but are the larger of the two species, growing up to 300mm (nose to tail tip) in length.

The rare lizards are currently being housed at Wellington Zoo for a 30 day quarantine period.

After this they will be released at the Orokonui Ecosanctuary, north of Dunedin – providing a predator-free environment for the skinks to breed.

Veterinary Sciences Manager Doctor Lisa Argilla says all the skinks are hap-pily settled into the quarantine facility.

“They are all happily settled and we have started doing health checks, includ-ing physical exams, diagnostic testing and

confi rming the sex for all the skinks,”As a further protection for Grand and

Otago Skinks, the Department of Conser-vation have implemented a conservation management plan, which includes zoos, in order to protect both skink species and maintain a reserve of genetic diversity.

“The Eastern populations of the Otago Skinks are increasing, so the focus is now on the declining Western population.”

Wellington Zoo will house Western Otago Skinks from mid-December.
