Dear Cool Culture families
My family and I can’t wait for Tuesday, June 8th to arrive. We’ll be meeting up with Cool Culture at the annual Museum Mile Festival—the biggest block party in Manhattan! All along 5th Avenue, between 105th and 82nd Streets, museums and tons more will be FREE from 6—9 PM! My kids (ages 4 and 9) are excited to come out with thousands of other families for a special evening of museums, live bands, magicians, jugglers, and art-in-the-street. Kicking-off at 6 p.m. at El Museo del Barrio with Latin-Caribbean music! We plan to travel with other families from my son’s education center to our first stop on the Mile. We’ll head to one of 6 Cool Culture Hot Spots where we’ll meet up with Cool Culture and even more families from the Cool Culture community. Options include El Museo del Barrio for music and singing in Spanish and English in Spanish Harlem at 105th Street, and next door at 104th Street the Museum of the City of New York where we’ll check out the fun cars exhibit.
At The Jewish Museum at 92nd Street we can see Curious George, the famous cartoon monkey, and then head down to the Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum to build our own playground with HUGE, life-size blocks in David Rockwell’s Imagination Playground in a Box. The Guggenheim Museum’s spiral building at 89th Street is another great place to Catch the Cool, and The Metropolitan Museum of Art at the other end of the mile offers endless rooms of treasures, including a beautiful statue of the Hindu god, Ganesha! In front of each these museums, will be a Cool Culture Hot Spot station—with Cool Culture staff, museum staff and volun-teers ready with answers to any questions. At each Cool Culture Hot Spot you can do a fun quick family activity and pick up Cool Culture’s great new Culture Hunt Cards. Like a treasure hunt, Cool Culture Hunt Cards will lead you on a search for works of art in five of the museums. As June 8th nears, my kids and I will check Cool Culture’s website, www.coolculture.org where we can download and print out the Culture Hunt Cards and get ready to Catch the Cool. We’re all looking forward to a great, fun-filled summer evening out, including a picnic dinner with sandwiches from home in Central Park. Even if my family can’t visit every museum, we can still get a taste of what they have to offer and plan our next trip! The Cool Culture Family Pass makes it easy to come back any day! We’ll be Catching the Cool on Tuesday, June 8th—and hope you will too!

and centers by their side! Listen to interactive songs for kids in Spanish and English, decorate a postcard together, and take a guided tour of El Museo’s galleries.
Then head down 5th Avenue, stop by Cool Culture Hot Spots to pick up Cool Culture Hunt Cards, and use them to hunt for cultural treasure at five other museums participating in this mile-long block party: experience special performances, kid-friendly activities and free admission for all visitors!
“We invite you to experience our culture…and make connections,” says Gonzalo Casals, Director of Education and Public Programs at El Museo. He suggests checking out a unique flag on display in Voces y Visiones, that represents
both of artist Nicolás Dumit Estévez’s Dominican and New York back-grounds. “Kids really get into it… thinking that they could produce a flag that really identifies them,” Mr. Casals explains.
Get a taste and enjoy family time every month at El Museo during the museum’s special Super Sábado program, you will often see grandpar-ents, parents and children strolling through the museum together on that special day. “It is something beautiful to share . . . I think that is what family is about – sharing with one another,” says Dr. Zugazagoitia.
Soak up even more Latino culture by attending the Summer Nights con-cert series, which features family-friendly music on Thursday nights in the summer. El Museo plans to feature live performances of merengue, salsa, norteño, hip hop, and Brazilian music.
