As you most likely have been able to feel within the past few weeks the weather is starting to change here in Florida and we are experiencing some cooler days and nights. As refreshing as it has been it is only the beginning and our cold front bouts are going to be rolling in soon. This year might be cooler than we are used to as well, the Farmers Almanac predicts that three quarters of the United States will see below normal temperatures this winter. Now is the time to ensure that your HVAC Unit is ready to handle the oncoming cold fronts that we endure these winter months. If you have not had your HVAC Unit cleaned and maintained make sure you get that scheduled, it is very important that when your HVAC Unit starts to move back and forth between the cool setting and the heat setting that your coils are in good shape and clean, otherwise you could be opening yourself up to some big time repairs. You see most south Florida homes have something called a Straight Cool system which uses a heat strip / heat coils to heat the air as it is entering your home (much like how toaster coils heat the bread), if these coils are not clean it could result in some burning of the dust and dirt collected on them, which in turn could be hazardous. In most northern Florida homes you have a Heat Pump system which is basically your AC Unit working in reverse to produce the heat for your home. If the parts are not properly maintained and cleaned and your system is going back and forth between working forward and backwards you could run into some problems. It is always better to be safe than sorry. Also with the winter months approaching keep in mind a few of these tips: • Florida’s population increases by 30% during these months, get your maintenance done now so that you’re not waiting in line for repairs later. • Continue to change your air filters, just because your AC Unit is not working as hard as it did during the summer months does not mean it doesn’t deserve new filters. • Turn your heat on, for more than 5 min, and make sure it comes on and produces heat. You don’t want to find out that it’s not working when you really need it. • Run your ceiling fans in reverse (counter clockwise) this draws the heat up towards the ceiling and then distributes it throughout the room.
