Transition to School Based Learning As you are aware, the Queensland Government has announced that Prep and Year 1 students will be able to return to school based learning on Monday 11 May. If low transmission rates continue, students in Year 2 – 6 will return to school from Monday 25 May. Confirmation of this final step will be made on May 15. The staff at Coolabunia State School are looking forward to welcoming our youngest students back on Monday and we look forward to our remaining students transitioning back to school in the very near future. Miss Zancola and Miss Charlton cannot wait for next week… As we transition back to school-based learning and see increased numbers of students returning to school, there are a number of operating procedures that need to be put in place. All parents have been emailed a letter that outlines these procedures. Some of these operating procedures are not new to us – they are practices that we have had in place for a number of weeks now. However, some are new and I acknowledge that a change to how we do things will be difficult. Despite these difficulties, I encourage all parents to support the school’s changed operational processes in order to ensure the health and safety of our staff, students, families and wider community. Two significant changes will be seen with drop-off and pick-up of students as well as Semester 1 reports. The information below regarding these two changes has been replicated from the information letter sent to parents:

Our Improvement Agenda for 2020 During this week’s assembly, I was so incredibly proud of the number of sight word ribbons that were awarded to our Prep, Year 1, Year 2 and Year 3 students. It is fantastic that students are continuing to focus on their learning and their reading even when learning away from school. This wonderful progress would not be possible without the assistance of our parents at home, and our teacher aides and teachers here at school – thank you all for the support that you are providing to our students as they learn to read. I would like to give special mention to Sam, Olithia, Harry, Ella, Jake & Myka who have learnt all 1000 sight words and have received their Black 1000 Sight Word ribbon!

To further encourage reading and support our Improvement Agenda, Coolabunia State School has again registered for the Premier’s Reading Challenge. Every student will be bringing home an information letter, bookmark and reading log. The aim is for students in Prep to Year 4 to read 15 books during the reading period and for students in Year 5 and 6 to read 20 books in this time. The reading period start this Monday and continues until Friday 28 August.

Changes to school ground access (impacting drop-off and pick-up) For morning drop-off: Parents must use the drop-off zone at the front of the school OR park their car in one of the designated spaces and walk their child

across the children’s crossing, ensuring appropriate social distancing with others in the carpark and on the front path. There will be a staff member on duty to assist students to move from the car/children’s crossing and through the front gate. For afternoon pick-up: Parents can either use the pick-up zone or park and meet their child at the children’s crossing, ensuring appropriate social distancing

with others in the carpark and on the front path. Younger students will be walked to the front of the school by their classroom teacher. An additional staff member will be on duty in the afternoon until 3:15pm to assist students. For early school pick-up during school hours: Parents need to call ahead and inform the school that they will be picking their child up early. This will allow administration staff to sign

students out and collect them from their classroom. On arrival to the carpark, parents are to call the school office and wait at the children’s crossing until a staff member walks the student

out.

If parents need to talk to a staff member, they must do this over the phone or via email. We ask that parents do not arrive at the school in order

to meet with a member of staff.

Be a mate. Be kind on May 8. It was wonderful to see so many students at school and at home supporting Do It For Dolly today as part of this week’s behaviour focus Kindness Matters at Coolabunia. Students dressed in blue and focused on showing kindness to others, because as we have learnt this week being kind will fill other people’s buckets and in turn fill our own buckets. At Coolabunia we want everyone’s bucket to not only be full but overflowing!

Weekly focus behaviour Next week our behaviour focus is Be engaged in your learning. Next week we will see the return of Prep and Year 1 students to school based learning, and in this first week we know how important it will be for us to transition students back to school and re-introduce them to school routines. As part of their transition to school based learning, students will work with their teachers on learning behaviour such as tuning in their brain and using SLANT. Also, next week will see our Year 2 to 6 students in the second half of their learning@home program. We acknowledge that after three weeks, things may be getting a little difficult, especially while they see other students being able to return to school. Therefore, it is imperative that we continue to support these students to adopt a growth mindset and be engaged in their learning while they remain at home. Students learning@home can keep an eye on their daily emails for tips and motivational messages from their teachers. Staff will also share ideas for parents on our Facebook page that will assist with supporting students to be engaged in their learning while at home.

Virtual Parade Look out for your Skype invitation to our virtual parade next week on Monday!

Attendance Survey Every parent has been sent a link to the attendance survey for week 4. The purpose of this survey is to understand which students will be physically attending school, undertaking home-based learning, or a combination of the two. This information will help us plan for both supervision and social distancing measures, please complete and submit this short survey as soon as possible: https://survey.qed.qld.gov.au/anon/3939.aspx. This survey will be conducted each week. I thank you for your assistance. Lisa Hawke Principal

Semester 1, 2020 Reports In addition to the extra week of student free days at the end of Term 1, the first 5 weeks of Term 2 has seen the delivery of a home-based learning program to all students (including those students who attended the school site). Therefore, assessment for Term 2 and reporting for Semester 1 will be adjusted to reflect the modified nature of learning over this time. A modified academic report will be provided to parents for all students for Semester 1, 2020. This report will be modified in the following ways: The Semester 1 report card will report only on the four subject areas covered in both Terms 1 and 2 for all students – English, Maths,

Science, and Health and Physical Education. Students will be awarded a level of achievement that gives an indication of their progress in these subject areas. This will be determined

using evidence of achievement from Term 1, evidence of learning from the learning@home program, and any modified assessment that may be completed during the second half of Term 2.

The report will not have a separate comment for each subject regarding student progress. The report card will contain a general comment which will provide information for the semester relating to the student’s overall progress,

effort and behaviour. There will be an overall effort and behaviour rating. Attendance will not be reported. There will be no parent-teacher interviews for Semester 1. However, you can contact your child’s teacher via phone or email if you have any questions regarding your child’s progress.

Yesterday, I met a girl who runs a battery kiosk at our local park. Yes, that’s right.

She sells C cells down by the seesaw!

I’m allergic to burnt bread …..

You could say I’m black toast intolerant.

We would like to share that one of our parents Maxine Whit-bread is fundraising and has done a Shave for a Cure. Maxine has set a goal of $2000 to fundraise for the Leukaemia Founda-tion and anyone who would like to donate can do so through the World’s Greatest Shave website or by contacting Maxine. Beau-ty Finesse has kindly donated a pamper package voucher for Maxine to use as a raffle prize for her fundraiser. Anyone that donates to Maxine's Shave for a Cure Fundraiser page, will automatically go into the draw to win an Express Glow Facial, Collagen Eye Treatment and a Neck and Shoulder Massage. The raffle will be drawn when Maxine reaches her goal of $2000. Well done Maxine – we can’t wait for you to send through a pic!
