Department Activities

• SPECIAL OLYMPICS TORCH RUN: The police department participated in the statewide Special Olympics Torch Run event on May 5.

• ROTARY CLUB EXCHANGE PROGRAM: On May 13, the police department hosted a police representative from New Zealand as part of the Rotary Club exchange program.

Major Cases & Investigative Events: • ARMED ROBBERY: Investigators responded to a bank robbery at Sunstate Bank on May 2. A tall

black male approached the teller, pointing a gun at her, and told her to fill his bag full of money. The tellers complied and the suspect fled the area. The investigation revealed the suspect’s identity for both the Sunstate Bank and Count on Cash robberies and a warrant was issued for his arrest. The suspect was detained in Texas after being stopped on an unrelated matter by El Paso police officers. He has since been extradited to Arizona, interviewed by the FBI and Coolidge investigations. The suspect confessed to both robberies and the February 26th arson of a Coolidge apartment.

• HIGH SCHOOL BOMB THREAT: On May 20, Coolidge Police and Fire responded to a bomb threat at Coolidge High School. The threat was received on a student’s cell phone through a “Yahoo” text message. The threat was found to be false and a prank, according to the juvenile suspect who was later identified and charged.

• OBSCENE MATERIAL AT HIGH SCHOOL: On May 18, the school resource officer was asked to investigate an allegation that a teacher may have exposed students to obscene material (Playboy Magazine) at Coolidge High School. The investigation revealed that a teacher did bring the magazine onto campus on May 16 and May 17 and the teacher exposed students to the cover of the magazine, but not the contents. The teacher was escorted from the campus by school officials on May 17, and asked not to return. The County Attorney’s office was consulted on the matter and they advised that “Playboy” is not considered obscene by Arizona Law and possession of the magazine on campus was inappropriate, but not a criminal act.

• STOLEN VEHICLE PURSUIT: During the night of May 23, officers were involved in the pursuit of a vehicle which had been reported stolen earlier in the day. The vehicle’s driver refused to stop and led police on a pursuit outside the city limits. While pursuing the stolen vehicle on a dirt canal road, the pursuing officer’s visibility was obstructed due to heavy dust and his vehicle rolled off a canal bridge onto its top. The officer was not injured and the suspects were able to elude officers. The stolen vehicle was recovered four days later.

• SEARCH WARRANT: Sergeant Walker assisted the Task Force with the warrant search of a local residence for narcotics. Prior to the execution of the warrant, a subject crashed his truck through the residence and the search warrant was not done. The subject was charged with aggravated assault and criminal damage.

• NARCOTICS/COUNTERFEITING INVESTIGATIONS: Investigators met with and interviewed confidential informants regarding narcotics and counterfeiting activity in Coolidge.
