PRINCIPAL’S NOTES

Principal’s Meeting Last Monday we hosted the entire Warrumbungle group of schools Principals for a daylong meeting. Mr Cronk who was coordinating the meeting and all of the Principal’s were very impressed not only with the hospitality shown, but also the whole feel of the school that they experienced when they met a number of our staff and students. They were all very impressed with Mendooran Central School and asked for their gratitude for the hospitality to be passed on. I would especially like to thank those who were involved with the catering, Mrs Waters and her team of staff and hospitality students again did a Stirling job of promoting our great little school. Athletics Carnival This Friday we have our Athletics carnival. As organisers and teams will be preparing this week and PE classes continue to practice in class, I remind students that this is a regular school day and attendance is compulsory. As with any school day, the only reason for being absent is from illness or an important family occasion, and if these are the case, then parents should contact the school so that an exemption is approved and no absence is marked against your students record. Focus on Reading Our Focus on Reading professional learning for some staff is continuing today. Our consultant will be working with key staff all day advising and guiding on how improved strategies to assist student’s reading and comprehension can be implemented into the classroom. Uniform I remind all students and parents that full school uniform is compulsory for all students. If you have had a washing mishap or an item has been lost, please ensure that your child brings a note for that day and we will endeavour to find a clean uniform to borrow. If you are having trouble financing a uniform, please contact me at the school and we will assist to find appropriate support.

KINDERGARTEN/ YEAR 1 NEWS Kindergarten and Year 1 students will continue to look at Needs and Wants this week by investigating where food comes from. We will start looking at the structure of procedure text types and follow some procedures to show how some food products are made.

Last Friday students went to a performance called "STAMP OUT BULLYING". This was a presentation about how people can deal with bullying. The performer used magic tricks to engage and support his theme in an entertaining way, while sharing an important yet simple message about getting along with others.

This Friday we will be holding the Infants Athletics Carnival. Infant students will participate in morning literacy activities in class at 9am as usual, with a break at 10am. Age races will commence at around 10.20am inside the fence beyond the play equipment, followed by novelty relays. After lunch Infants Students will compete in events such as Shot Put and Long Jump, finishing the day’s events watching and cheering the Champion Races. I invite parents to come and cheer competitors on this enjoyable day.

YEARS 2/3/4/5 NEWS This week in spelling we look at the sounds ‘ai’, as in rain and ‘aw’ as in claw. In Mathematics we continue to practice counting money and learn more about fractions. Yr 2,3,4,5 is very excited about building a no-dig vegetable garden. We will begin planting some seeds this week into trays to raise them in a small hot house-if you could spare some winter vegetable seeds it would be appreciated. The garden will be made mainly from hay. A note tomorrow will be going home about this. In our Cogs unit we will continue to look into the hardships the First Fleet and the convicts endured eg: housing, work, flies, heat, lack of food etc. Homework this week consists of a Spelling sheet, completing the 2nd page of our rhyming sheet and for Mathematics a money sheet. Please keep practicing your times tables with random questions like 2x4= ?, 4x2= ?, 10x5= ?, 5x6=? etc. Congratulations to Tom Yeo, Casey Adams and Jade Tumbri for receiving their pen licence. Have a super week!

Volunteers are required for time-keeping, judging etc. Please contact the school if you are able to help. All visitors to the school must sign in at the front office.

MAJOR EXCURSION - BATHURST SNOWY MOUNTAINS This year our major excursion is heading to Bathurst and the Snow.! It will be an exciting trip full of adventure and spaces are limited on our bus – only 9 seats left! We have had many excursions in the past years that have been great successes and have been well supported, this year will be the best yet. The itinerary, attached to this newsletter, is full of activities and the students attending will have memories of it for a lifetime. Anyone from Year 4 through to Year 12 can attend; the students will learn about our colonial history and enjoy an opportunity that many kids rarely get when we hit the slopes on days 3 and 4. If finance is a problem, we are more than capable of making payment arrangements; many families choose to do so. Please contact Mr Spora for details on how we can help provide this opportunity for your child. In order to secure your child’s space on the bus a deposit of $50 and the permission note must be provided asap.

SECONDARY NEWS GENERAL Year 11 half yearly exams will be held this week. The students were issued with their timetable early last week. The senior students who attended the Dubbo Tertiary Information Day at the senior campus last week, learnt a great deal. They also valued the opportunity to meet with representatives from various institutions and to ask questions. All students have been training and participating in trials for our annual school Athletics Carnival this Friday. We are hoping for a fine, warm winters day! Today we welcome Caitlyn Taylor, a 4th Year student from Charles Sturt University in Bathurst. Caitlyn will be working with Miss Denise Althofer in the PD/H/PE department for 5 weeks.
