February Etiquette Tips

The maintenance of your muscles plays a major role in healthy aging. By taking care of your muscles, you can impact your quality of life now and in the future. This program will share what you can do to delay or even prevent the loss of ability to perform daily tasks as we age. The focus will be on how your muscles

work, the importance of protein in your diet and exercise for successful aging.

There is no doubt that Valentine’s Day is all about roses, chocolates, and candies. This year, instead, make healthy gifts to give to your loved ones that anyone would love.

You don’t have to completely skip the sweets, but there are many good alternatives to the rich chocolate and sugary candy that you have been giving and receiving for years.

Everyone loves chocolate-covered strawberries this time of year. These are a great option to give as gifts, especially since you are incorporating a fruit.

Another fun idea is to use different fruits and put messages on them like you would see on a Valentine’s Day card, such as “you are the apple of my eye” or “I am bananas for you.” This option can even be fun for your kids to take to school for their classmates.

Mason jar gifts have become very popular because they are versatile, easy to make, and hold well. Grab a mason jar, and make your own version of oats with a twist.

You can get creative and add different sweeteners or flavors such as honey or dried fruit to complete your recipe. Just add a tag with a message and a red bow, and you have a perfect Valentine’s Day gift sure to impress.

Coming up with healthy gift ideas can be fun and will make your gift stand out when you give it to your friends and family. Get creative and encourage others to do the same!

income for a family in which both parents work full-time is $102,400, according to Pew. When mothers work part-time, it is $84,000, and when they stay home, it is $55,000.

The ways parents spend their time at home have changed markedly over the years as well. Government time-use data show that parents overall do less housework and spend more time with their children than those in the past. The time men spend on paid work has decreased since 1965, while the time they spend on housework and childcare has increased.

In most cases, women still do the majority of the childcare and housework even when both parents work full-time. This is especially true when it comes to the mental tasks of raising a child, like managing their schedules and taking care of them when they are sick. Fathers and mothers are much more likely to equally share in doing household chores, disciplining children and playing with children. There is also a gender divide in parents’ perceptions of how much responsibility they take on, Pew found. Fifty-six percent of fathers say they share equally, while only 46 percent of mothers agree.

One thing that has not changed is the difficult balancing act working parents face. According to a new Pew Center survey, working parents say they feel stressed, tired, and rushed. They also feel like they do not have enough quality time with their children, friends, partners, or hobbies. The numbers show that while family structure seems to have changed, public policy and workplace structures have not adjusted to a new norm in which both parents work. Over half of all working parents say the balancing act is difficult. The expectations of modern parenthood aggravate the stresses they face.

This shift has some other interesting effects as well. The median household

BALANCING WORK AND FAMILY IN TODAY’S WORLD

Children today are much more likely to grow up in a household in which their parents work. Working parents are the new norm. Sixty percent of children now live in households where all the parents at home work at least part-time. This is up from 40 percent in 1965. Nearly half of all two-parent families now have two parents that work. This is a sharp increase from previous decades.

NEED YOUR HELP

Farm Machinery Sale Concesions March 2, 2019

Bourbon County Fairgrounds Bourbon County Extension Homemakers have been offered an opportunity to earn money by operating the concessions at this event. 100% of money made in the concessions will go to the Bourbon County Extension Homemakers. This is a great opportunity to secure the budget so as to not have to increase

dues in the near future.

Breakfast and Lunch will be served.

The undertaking of this responsibility is going to require the County Extension Homemakers pulling together as a team to prepare, man and solicit donations for this event. Each club will be asked to support the fundraiser in some way. Start discussing and deciding how your club can contribute. If you are not affliciated with a club then please consider calling the Extension Office and offering your assistance and talents. A great opportunity to get to meet your fellow team players and contribute to the cause.

March is Nutrition Month Bourbon County Extension Homemakers present the Peter Rabbit Skit to all kindergarten classes to encourage

nutritious eating during March. The Peter Rabbit and Mr. McGregor story is read to each class and then the students get to enjoy some delicious (and nutritious) veggies from Mr. McGregor’s garden.

This will presented at five schools and for 12 kindergarten classes during 6 sessions.

The following positions are needed for each session.

AGENT’S CORNER

FROM THE PRESIDENT’S PEN

Bourbon County Extension Homemakers are off to a great start in 2019. They are giving back to their community (Peter Rabbit Skit); they are pursuing fundraising to keep dues at a minimum and still balance the budget; they are learning about a country that is not nearly as privileged as ours; they are exploring with technology by skyping for the International Meal and they are exploring new hobbies February thru May! That all sounds like a lot of learning, transitioning and great fun and fellowship. Please bringing a guest to any or all of these events. Showing is the best way of getting the word out there as to what Extension Homemakers has to offer.

Be aware of cold and winter weather forecast and plan ahead for safety, food and shelter. Check in with shut-ins or individuals that may be in need of assistance during and prior to bad weather. You can’t help them if you can’t

Reach Your Nutrition Goals in the New Year

If your goal is to get healthier in the New Year, try these tips to help guide you toward success.

• Start with small changes. Instead of a diet overhaul, make small changes to what you eat and drink that will work for you now and in the future. • Take one day at a time. Sometimes things don’t go as planned, even with the best of intentions. If you miss one day or one milestone for your goal, don’t give up! • Be active your way. Pick activities you enjoy. If you focus on having fun or learning a new skill that interests you, you will be more likely to stick with it. • Team up. Find a friend with similar goals—swap healthy recipes and be active together. Staying on track is easier with support and a cheerleader. • Celebrate successes. Think of each change as a “win” as you build positive habits and find ways to reach your goals.

Love is in the air! February is a wonderful time to let all the special people in your life know how much they mean to you! Love is an ACTION verb, so let’s show that love, not only on Feb 14th, but every day of the year.

As we think about our heart, remember February 1 is Wear Red for a Healthy Heart Day! Be relentless in knowing and teaching the signs and symptoms of a heart attack or stroke. As women, we tend to put others first in our caregiving and these are two areas that we most often overlook as we plan to improve our health. Be informed and stay prepared.

February also brings us Super Bowl Sunday with a great opportunity to try new snacks and desserts! We will enjoy our Bourbon County International meal, Nat’l pizza day on the 9th, celebrate famous Presidents’ birthdays and enjoy Oscar night on the 24th! Let’s continue to create memories in 2019.

Remember, we are building our Heavenly Tea Cup display at our Extension office. Please bring in tea cups in memory of members of your club who have passed away. We need club name, person name, birth/death dates. Folks have donated cups to use in the event you are unable to secure a cup from the family! Just bring us the pertinent info and we will do the rest.

Continue to invite new folks to visit your club meetings and let’s grow the best team of homemakers ever. Thought for the month: Successful is the person who has lived well, laughed often and loved much, who has gained the respect of children, who leaves the world better than they found it!

Have a fabulous February. Bette Edwards, [email protected] Bourbon County Extension Homemakers President 859.707.9260
