Whilst it is generally understood that smokecan kill and cause substantial damage toproperty, it’s the fire that that can producethe total devastation from which manypeople and companies never recover.

Building on the knowledge gained in morethan thirty years of smoke control,Coopers continues to lead the way bydeveloping newer generations of firecontainment systems that conform to, andoften exceed legislatory requirements.Coopers research and development workin advanced technology fabrics andsophisticated control systems ensures thattrue fitness for purpose is achieved.

It is a fact that smoke inhalation is a biggerkiller than fire itself.

Superheated smoke spreads silently andrapidly throughout a building and can onlybe stopped by physical barriers and efficientextraction techniques.

Since 1975 Coopers has pioneered themodern day ‘gravity fail safe’ smoke curtain, the design of which has yet to be improved. As recognised market leaders in thistechnology, Coopers systems have beenincorporated into many of the world’slargest and most prestigious buildings. Acarefully designed smoke containmentsystem not only helps to save lives, but alsoreduces the disruption to business in theevent of fire.

Fire and smoke

Andrew and John Cooper patented the modern day concept of the electromagneticgravity fail safe fire and smoke barrier back in 1981, and since then Coopers hasbecome the market leader in innovative fire and smoke barrier technology.

From the early days of development and manufacture of its very first smoke curtainsystems, Coopers has incorporated both active and passive smoke ventilation productsand intelligent controls to create a total SHEVS (Smoke Heat Exhaust VentilationSystems) package. This new generation of integrated fire and smoke control systemshas already been installed in many major building projects throughout the world.

The company policy of staying connected to the continually changing fire regulationsand fire engineered solutions that affect the industry has led to many design innovationsalong the way to meet these changes. The ‘Variospeed’ drive system for example, amilestone in smoke barrier control, and FireMasterPlus 2 hour insulation, dynamic failsafe braking are still being used successfully today by Coopers and their imitators.

Rigorous product testing and market research has always been a fundamental part ofthe Coopers design philosophy. It is this very aspect of the Company’s structure thathas resulted in the enhancement of existing products and the addition of new ones. The SmokeStop horizontal and curved smoke barriers were successfully launched inthe mid-nineties, and more recently KoolShade and KoolGlass, the unique and highlyefficient, micro louvre solar control systems, are now an established part of thecompany’s product range.

The move to a new, custom built, hi-tech 25,000 sq. ft. factory early in 2005combining the fire and smoke systems production with wire weaving and specialistglass lamination allows Coopers growth for the future.

Coopers is an ISO 9001:2000 company and is committed to providing qualityenvironmental control solutions to an ever changing and demanding market place.

VentilationA carefully designed ventilation system canbring numerous benefits to both theowners and occupants of a building.

The integration of fire and smokecontainment with an appropriate ventilationsystem can achieve a combination of lowrunning costs, a cool, comfortableenvironment and ensure that the lives ofthe workforce are not put at risk.

Coopers design strategy for the future is tointegrate leading edge technology productsinto intelligent systems that meet the everchanging regulations being imposed on theway we live.

Countless working hours are lost each year due toproblems associated with the overheating of officesand places of work. With modern office proceduresdemanding the use of ever more heat generatingoffice equipment, the problems are set to get worse.

It is thought that the record breaking temperatures ofthe summer of 2003, will continue to occur as aresult of man’s continuing environmental pollution.Building regulations now recommend passive eco-friendly methods of solar heat gain prevention. Tomeet this challenge, Coopers has developed a uniquerange of solar shading products that completelyprevent the sun’s rays entering a building, which inturn not only dramatically reduces running costs, butprovides all the additional comforts associated withefficient solar control.

Solar controlDrives &controlsA healthy and safe working environment ishigh on the priority list for any organisation.

Legislation is often used as the force todrive forward product improvement. Thephilosophy at Coopers is to set the industrystandards by providing systems that utilisestate-of-the-art technology for operatingand controlling the life saving systems thatprevent the travel of fire and smoke in alltypes of buildings.

This new generation of more powerful, compact and intelligent drives and controlsis designed be used on a diverse range ofbuilding projects.

LAKESIDE SHOPPING CENTRE -THURROCK UKAs part of a major refurbishment of one of Europe’slargest shopping malls, Coopers designed andinstalled a combined smoke containment/extractionsystem. The ventilators, which are glazed toprovide additional natural daylight, automaticallyopen in the event of a fire to release the smoke andproducts of combustion. The system has beendesigned to trap the smoke in a hot bouyant mass, which speeds up the extraction process when theventilators are opened.

SWISS RE BUILDING - LONDON UK The Swiss Re Building, affectionately known as‘Gherkin’ is one of London’s newest and mostprestigious landmarks. Coopers engineers workedclosely with Arup Fire Consultancy to design andinstall over a kilometre of smoke containmentbarriers covering twenty-two floors of the thirtynine storey glass tower. The unique design of thebuilding produced challenging design restrictionsand demanded highly detailed performance criteriafrom the Coopers’ design team.

The building has an integrated smoke containmentand smoke ventilation system that utilises naturalventilation principles for comfort cooling.

VETERANS AFFAIRS OFFICE -SACRAMENTO USASummer overheating and solar glare that causeddifficulty with viewing computer screens, promptedurgent attention at the Sacramento Veterans Affairsoffice California. The internal vertical blinds did littleto alleviate the problem, and they also restrictedoutward vision. After several options wereconsidered, the decision was taken to installCoopers KoolShade SmartLouvre. The KoolShadesystem proved to be precisely the solution requiredto prevent the sun entering the building, preventglare, reduce overheating, and provide an overalloutward appearance that was both architecturallypleasing and maintenance free.

XANADU SHOPPING CENTRE -MADRID SPAIN It required a company with very specialised expertiseto be entrusted with providing the fire and smokeemergency containment for what is now the largestshopping centre in Europe. 1.5 kilometres ofmonitored smoke curtains and 1.0 kilometre ofFireMaster fire curtains operating in conjunction withover one thousand smoke ventilators protect thecentre.

The flagship ‘El Cortes’ store alone has over 2000square metres of smoke containment comprising theunique Coopers continuous circular void smokecurtain arrangement. A system that is operated by afully monitored Variospeed control unit linkeddirectly to the building management system.

Many other stores in this vast complex are alsoprotected by Coopers fire and smoke products.

Our expertise speaks for itself...Coopers has been at the forefront of the design and installation of environmental control systemsfor over 30 years. Our portfolio of projects in major centres throughout the world illustrates theability of Coopers’ engineers to provide a high quality solution - every time.
