Headmistress’s Message

Dear Parents

The sun shone for our Sports Days and we are hoping for the good weather to continue to the end of term! Congratulations to all the participants who tried their hardest.

Last week saw the performances of The Lion King which was a truly theatrical experience involving pupils behind the scenes as well as on stage. Thank you to everyone who came to support this fantastic event.

I am delighted to announce that Mrs Graves is expecting her first child which is due in November. We send Mrs Graves our very best wishes and look forward to seeing her return at the start of next term.

We have many events each week until we break up for the summer holidays so do keep checking the app and website.

PS. FoCHS would love your help. Please look out for their request.

Kind regards

Kaye Lovejoy

Making Rock Pools

The children have been having a great time making rock pools in class. The pools were made by filling a bowl up with water and then adding dehydrated seaweed, along with some rocks and shells to help them look more realistic. Once the seaweed was added to the water, it started to hydrate again slowly until it looked how it does in the sea. It was a really interesting experiment which the pupils enjoyed working on.

House Swimming Gala

On Thursday 18 May the school held their Inter House Swimming Gala at Ongar Pool. All the pupils in the Juniors were involved. There was a series of races with many very close finishes. When all the points had been added up it was Beech who took the honours as the champion House.

Mr Robinson would like to thank all of the pupils for their excellent attitudes and great determination. Thank you also to all the parents who came along to watch.

The Champion Swimmer competition results are as follows:

Year 6 Year 5 Year 4 Year 3

1st Jasmine 1st Arwen 1st Kimaya 1st Jessica and Francesca

2nd Sam 2nd Harry 2nd Oliver 3rd Elara

3rd Morgan 3rd Taylor 3rd Isabelle

National Smile Month

As part of National Smile Month Transition Biddle spoke about the three key tips to keep a healthy mouth: cleaning your teeth twice a day, not eating too many sugary foods and drinks and visiting the dentist regularly. The class then each made their own big smile.

Lower Kindergarten Sports Day

Lower Kindergarten had such a fun morning on Wednesday 14 June competing in a variety of races to a huge crowd of very proud parents! They took part in bean bag races, tricycle races, and everyone’s favourite, the egg and spoon race! They all received colourful stickers for joining in, and they were all fantastic. Well done everyone!

English Topic Work in Year 6

Year 6 have been studying elephants as a mini topic in English. They have learnt about their unique role in the world and have studied biodiversity and habitats and some of the issues and challenges that elephants face. They have included PSHE, Maths, Geography and Science in their work. They have taken part in discussions and debates, written reports, diary extracts and letters, learnt new vocabulary and carried out role play.

The children also read a text called ‘Elephant Rescue’ describing the fate of a young elephant who became separated from its mother but ended up being saved by the IFAW. They then rewrote the story from the baby elephant’s perspective. Some excellent stories were produced explaining the baby elephant’s thoughts and feelings.

Below is the conclusion of Alana’s story.

‘You don’t know how much you have until it is all taken away from you. Our world is natural, beautifully unfathomable, complex, outstanding and life-changing. How does it fail to fulfil our lives? How isn’t it enough? Just this world. Treat everything you do with great respect and do it like there is no tomorrow.’

Well done Alana a beautiful piece of work.

Countries of the World

On Thursday 18 May Year 4 Lane were visited by Mr Strouts, Daisy’s Dad. Mr Strouts visits lots of countries for his work and he came to talk to the class about five of them in connection with their Geography lessons. He brought with him a map showing all the 28 countries that he has visited, a fridge magnet for each country, and lots of different currencies: German, the Netherlands, South African and Japanese. Pupils studied the bank notes and flags and can now explain a lot about each of them. Mr Strouts was impressed by the children’s questions and knowledge.

The visit finished by everyone getting the chance to sample sweets from Singapore and blow the vuvuzela!

We would like to say a HUGE thank you to Mr Strouts for coming along to share his adventures.

Charlie’s Football Success

Charlie plays for Barkingside Youth Football Club and on Saturday 20 May he attended a club presentation where he was awarded ‘Player of the Season 2016/2017’, by his manager. Charlie was chosen for being a well-mannered, disciplined child who is willing to play in any position he is asked to play in.

Charlie has had a great football season, well done!

Tiddly Prom

Lower and Upper Kindergarten children performed their Tiddly Prom to their families on Tuesday 13 June. What a fantastic show it was! Everyone sang and played to the very best of their ability, creating an energy filled show enjoyed by the large audience.

The pupils’ favourite songs to sing and dance to were ‘If you were a Turkey’ and ‘Space’. There was also an instrumental performance of

‘Zig Zag’.

Well done everyone, you all did amazingly well.

British Values -Democracy

On Thursday 8 June Transition Biddle held a class vote.

The children had to vote on the book that they wanted to read at the end of the day. There was a choice of four books. The children were given the opportunity to look at the books in the morning and then vote in the afternoon.

The children went to the Polling Station with their voting slip to cast their vote.

Year 3 Visit to Royal Gunpowder Mills

Year 3 travelled back in time to the 1940s to experience a day out in wartime Britain.

The children dressed up in role as evacuees and listened to and took part in a variety of exciting events. These included taking cover in a communal shelter during an air-raid, visiting a war-time shop and experiencing the journey of an evacuee from leaving

their home to meeting their new ‘host’ family.

Luckily, they all had their gas masks and name labels so were well prepared for the day’s experience!

Gym Club Display

The Gym Club have been working extremely hard during their after school sessions recently. The whole school were very lucky to be able

to watch a presentation of their best moves during their display that took place on Monday 22 May. The whole school was very excited to see their flips, rolls and jumps and there were plenty of gasps in the crowd as the squad impressed us over and over again. Well done gymnasts!

Coopersale Hall Swimmers

Harry, Arwen, Jasmine and Taylor all swam in the Epping Forest Swimming Club’s Three Trees Gala. These fantastic swimmers had a great time while smashing some of their personal best times in this team event. Well done!

FoCHS Update

We've been delighted that the weather has been good enough for the return of Ice Cream Friday! Long may it continue, hopefully at least into July for the Picnic in the Park on Tuesday 11 July. This promises to be a lovely afternoon with dance and singing displays from the children, pony rides, refreshments, exotic animals, games and stalls.

FoCHS are also pleased to be supporting Miss Rooks and her Outdoor Library which gives the children the opportunity to relax outside and read magazines and books in the sunshine.

Save the Children - Den Day Coopersale Hall School will be holding a special event on Tuesday 27 June, inviting all pupils to build dens for Save the Children’s Den Day and raise funds that will change children’s lives.

By raising money on Den Day we will be helping Save the Children give children around the world the things they need to grow up happy and healthy, like a safe place to shelter.

Our pupils will be joining children across the UK to unleash their imaginations and transform the school grounds into amazing dens.

On the day, we will be building dens out of everyday materials such as cardboard boxes, sheets and sticks. Parents are invited to come and view their children’s dens before the end of their school day.

Day in the life of a Victorian!

On 22 May Year 6 visited the Gunpowder Mills to experience life in the Victorian times.

“If you worked at the work house you could do one of three jobs; matchstick counter, shoe shiner or wash the laundry. If you counted the matchsticks they had to have 40 matchsticks per box. If you had the job of shoe shiner your arms would ache because you have to keep doing really fast motions with your arm. If you washed the laundry you could easily scrape your knuckles on the washing board, then there would be blood on your material that you were washing, and if the boss was next to you they deducted your wages or paid you no wages at all!” By Tayte

“In Victoria times the seaside was very different compared to now. Instead of wearing a swimming costume you wore a dress instead. The Victorian people liked to show off. Rich ladies would bring their dresses and ride on donkeys along the promenade. There was also entertainment. These were normally puppet shows of Punch and Judy. In Victoria times they used toys that are very different to the ones we use today. Some of the toys they used were: spinning tops, china dolls, cards, ball and cup, jacks (with stones), dolly pegs and rocking horses.” By Melissa

Year 6 Visit Crucial Crew!

This week Year 6 visited Crucial Crew to learn 10 different scenarios for their safety and health.

They learnt about lorries, fires, road safety, fitness, social, medical, bullying, healthy eating, girl friends and boy friends, CPR and crime. Not only was it a fun day, but hopefully what the children learnt will stay with them long into the future.

Having a Roaring Time at Art Club

Pupils were very excited about their summer performance of The Lion King which was held on Wednesday 14 and Thursday 15 June. Everyone worked hard building up to the event, rehearsing their lines

and the many musical numbers that were included in the show. There was a lot of work to do backstage as well, and the Art Club were very helpful. They met on Wednesday and Friday after school to create staging and props for the big performance. Some of the main challenges involved the creation of the tricky animal masks and the building of ‘Pride Rock’, where the most emotional scenes of the show take place. A big thank you to everyone that contributed to making the show such as ROARING success.

Infant Sports Day

Everyone had a great afternoon on Monday 12 June at the Infant Sports Day, the children really got involved and put all their effort into the events.

The afternoon started with a parent ‘through the hoops’ race, which was a lot of fun and set a great mood for the rest of the day. Following this were the obstacle races, under and over races, bat and bean bag races and finally the flat races.

A huge well done to everyone that took part and thanks to the friends and family that came to support.

SENDCo Welcomes a New Addition

Many congratulations to our SENDCo who welcomed the arrival of a baby son on Wednesday 10 May weighing a healthy 7lbs. His name is Eoin Adam Doherty.

We were very lucky to have a surprise visit from them both last week. Mother and son are doing well and Mrs Doherty looks forward to visiting again soon.

Junior Sports Day

Everyone had a fantastic afternoon on Tuesday 13 June at Junior Sports Day. Pupils from Years 3 to 6 took part in a variety of events including sprint races, skipping races and even bat and bean bag races. It was very competitive as there are some very sporty pupils, but it was great to see everyone take part, and have so much fun in the sun! There was a huge crowd cheering them on, some of which even competed in the Parents’ race!

There was plenty of teamwork among the pupils and they should be very proud of themselves. Points from the races contributed to each pupil’s House. It was a close competition but the overall winner was Beech House. Well done Beech! Race results were as follows:

Mr Robinson would like to thank all of the pupils for their great determination and effort. Also a big thank you to all the parents who came along to give support.

Empty Classroom Day

Rain did not stop play on Empty Classroom Day, held within the school grounds on Friday 19 May.

Coopersale Hall School joined many other schools within the UK and around the world to take part in an exciting outdoor learning event with the aim to get as many children as possible outside for at least one lesson in the school day. Besides lessons taking place outside of the classroom, there was also an outdoor library for the children to enjoy at playtimes and to share and explore a range of different texts including magazines and puzzle books.

Every class took part in at least one lesson outside of the classroom and enjoyed opportunities to learn within the wonderful grounds of the school.

Upper Kindergarten: The children spent a lesson observing

wildlife and measuring the length of a blue whale!

Transition: In their lesson, Transition got a better understanding of

the position of hands on the clock when reading the time. This helped them to think about the shape and formation of numbers.

Transition B: Transition Biddle took their art lesson outside where

the children had fun making chameleon pictures.

Year 1: The children made use of the outdoor library and enjoyed

reading books in an outdoor environment. Tegan especially liked the lesson and commented “It’s so calm.”

Teacher comments: “The children really enjoyed being in a different environment. They felt it was a real treat being outside the classroom. They were amazed to arrive in the outdoor classroom and discover the mats and books. They gasped in surprise and were thrilled to see such as variety of reading material and to have somewhere dry and comfortable to read. It was a real success.”

1A: The pupils created a whole class sculpture in the style of Andy Goldsworthy.

2D: Year 2 also got the opportunity to visit the outdoor library and

said “It was the best library visit ever!”

They even managed to do some computing outdoors! The children learnt to be able to accurately program Probots and Beebots. Being outside gave them a great amount of space to work with, it was a real success.

Teacher comments: “The children enjoyed being outside. There was plenty of space for them to move. They all worked independently and in groups of two. They were all able to talk about the fact that the

commands need to be in the correct order and that ‘robots’ only do what we program them to do!”

Empty Classroom Day Cont.

3W: Year 3W decided to make use of the whole school grounds as

part of their outdoor learning. They spent a lesson outside learning about the trees that are dotted around the school grounds and used different implements to measure the circumference of the trees along with their age.

Year 4: In DT, pupils were given two tasks; first to build a bridge so a

toy car could cross a 60cm gap, and second they had to support as much weight as possible in the centre of the bridge.

Lion King Production

Months of hard work and practise culminated in two spectacular performances of The Lion King. It was a colourful and energetic show filled with fantastic acting, wonderful singing from the main characters and chorus, as well as some of the most amazing costumes, masks and set that have been seen at Coopersale Hall. The audience could see how much the children not only enjoyed being on stage but also enjoyed working backstage too, as the sound and lighting crew were also pupils!

Well done to everyone who took part. We are a very proud to have such talented and hard working pupils.
