BKG’s mission
to provide the geodata infrastructure for the country taking into account the responsibilities of the states (e.g. the national geodata centre)
to carry out applied research and technological development
to represent the German interests in geodesy and geoinformation on the international level
Seminar SDI in Poland and EuropeWrocław, 01 – 03 December 2004
Tasks of IMAGI:- to optimise the coordination of GI applications in the
federal government
- to develop the framework for the German SDI (GDI-DE)
Interministerial Committee for Geoinformation
established in 1998 by the Federal Governmentall members of IMAGI are federal ministries
- to tighten cooperation between Federation and the Länder
- to establish the metadata information system GeoMIS.Bundto facilitate access to and use of federal geodata (reference & thematic
data) for public authorities, industry, academia and citizens

Evaluation of the German approach to a National Spatial Infrastructure (GDI-DE)
Sustainable political support at the highest level
Improved Co-ordination being established
Phased implementation
Selling the benefits
Seminar SDI in Poland and EuropeWrocław, 01 – 03 December 2004
Lessons learnedStrong political support is needed to establish a SDI -in a country and on the European level (EP, Council, EC)
Need for an authorised coordinating structure to initiate and monitor the development and implementation of a SDI.
A common process of specifying the strategy of a SDI is needed (e.g. IMAGI together with state committees for GDI-DE or EC together with Eurogeographics for ESDI)
Need for a culture of sharing (pricing and licensing) policies, experiences, and practical solutions.
