This is a full-time, benefited, 11/12 pay plan (work 11 months with pay and benefits over 12) probationary position within the Cultural Centers for Academic Excellence. Position Summary: This position oversees the Latino/a Center for Academic Excellence, which resides under the umbrella of HSU’s Cultural Centers for Academic Excellence. This larger unit is comprised of multiple programs, including two longstanding centers – the MultiCultural Center (MCC) and the Native American Center for Academic Excellence (or Indian Tribal and Educational Personnel Program, ITEPP) – as well as two newer programs, the African- American Center for Academic Excellence and the Latino/a Center for Academic Excellence. Functioning as a collaborative team of student services programs, the Cultural Centers for Academic Excellence focus on empowering students as they navigate successful pathways through college in a way that honors, preserves and sustains diverse cultural value systems; creating community-centered environments and opportunities that stim- ulate learning and academic engagement; facilitating cross-cultural learning experiences across campus; supporting student identity development within a culturally-grounded framework; and providing bridges for students to key campus resources, as well as opportunities for student-faculty engagement. The Cultural Centers for Academic Excellence are a key component of HSU’s many current initiatives to support retention and inclusive academic excellence, and are part of a larger campus focus on supporting a diverse, equita- ble and inclusive campus community. Humboldt State University is one of 23 campuses within the California State University (CSU) system, and is one of 18 CSU campuses to receive federal designation as a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI). About half of our total student population are Students of Color, and over half of our total student population are first-generation students. For this position, we are seeking a visionary leader who understands the challenges of historically underrepresented and/or first generation students, and who can help our campus meet our goal of fostering a campus climate that is broadly supportive of the success of Latino/a students. The Coordinator will create and promote an inclusive cul- ture for student success while providing the inspiration, vision, mentoring, and direction needed to assist students in achieving their personal, academic, and professional goals. opment, transition issues, time management and effective communication.

The Coordinator will participate in local, regional, state and national organizations on student success and stays

current on educational trends, studies and best practices on retention/completion strategies for Latino/a students.

The Coordinator will be responsible for raising awareness about and educating students on new opportunities,

resources, programs, policies and procedures at Humboldt State University. The Coordinator will promote student

participation in sponsored events and activities designed to enrich and enhance their personal and social well-

being.

Campus Resources and Outreach Support

Lead efforts to promote resources and outreach with other units at Humboldt State University, including the

Learning Center, Academic and Career Advising Center, Educational Opportunity Program, and Admissions.

Will collaborate with academic partner units on retention strategies for, and serve as a resource within the com-

munity, including other campus offices/departments. The Coordinator will develop an ongoing relationship with

Latino/a student association leaders, faculty and staff.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in a related field of study and 2 years of demonstrated professional experience in a college

level student services program or related field. A Master’s degree may substitute for one year of experience.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Demonstrated knowledge, training and experience of best practices to support the retention and graduation of

Latino/a students in higher education.

Demonstrated understanding of counseling/advising techniques, and standards and practices of student ser-

vices within institutions of higher education.

Commitment to and experience working with diverse student populations.

Experience in program development, implementation and assessment.

Demonstrated experience and effectiveness working with or advising historically underrepresented students

and their communities.

Demonstrated ability to maintain timely and efficient communication in a professional manner

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills necessary

Demonstrated ability to build and maintain effective and collaborative working relationships across a diverse

population, and with a range of campus constituents.

Solid conflict resolution skills and ability to navigate sensitive situations.

Demonstrated commitment to social justice and equity in higher education

Demonstrated ability to provide leadership within a highly collaborative team environment; analyze prob-

lems and support office needs, use initiative and resourcefulness in planning work assignments.

Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal day to day supervision.

Demonstrated attention to detail, and ability to set priorities and deadlines, and to ensure projects are com-

pleted.

Ability to maintain confidentiality in accordance with FERPA ethics.
