Dear District Residents: There are many interesting activities that have happened in the past month and more exciting events coming up in November. Our Pink Week celebration in Oc-tober was a huge success! Thanks to the CCS Booster Club and to everyone who was involved for coordinating all of the activities. We are looking forward to honor-ing our veterans during November with a display in the main hall. This tribute will allow all of us to reflect on the contributions made by members of the armed forces. One of our Commencement Out-comes is that “graduates will dem-onstrate personal, social, and moral responsibility in dealing with health, wellness, community, and environmental issues.” Our students certainly meet those re-quirements. We are proud of the

students and staff who give back to the community in many ways, including Pink Week and recogni-tion of veterans. Parent Teacher Confer-ences will be held on November 18 and 19. All parents are en-couraged to come in to discuss your child’s progress. The construction project has begun. The bore fields for the geothermal portion of the project are currently being drilled on the front lawn. In addition, contrac-tors are in the process of prepar-ing bids for the rest of the project. We hope that construction on the interior of the building will start by the end of December. The parking lot on the west side of the building is cur-rently being used by staff mem-bers. The doors on the west side and north side of the building re-

main locked and are not to be used by the public, except for on Wednesday night. The front doors will be open then so that the community can access the library. Parents should continue to drop their children off and pick up their children in the back parking lot near the district office. Mr. Jay Boak, the B.O.C.E.S. District Superinten-dent, is assisting the Board of Education with the search for a new superintendent. All constitu-ent groups are invited to become involved on November 16 when the final candidates will come to Copenhagen. Information will be posted on the website as soon as the arrangements are made. Sincerely, Judy L. Waligory

In July,

Mrs. Zehr

notified

the Copen-

hagen

Board of

Education that she had accepted

the position of Assistant Superin-

tendent for Instruction for the

Watertown City School District.

Over the past few months the

Board has devoted many hours to

recruiting a new Superintendent

of Schools. As part the recruit-

ment process, the Board would

like to gather information regard-

ing the communities’ reaction to

each of the candidates for this po-

sition. With that as a backdrop,

we would like to extend an invita-

tion to members of the commu-

nity to meet and ask questions of

candidates for the Superinten-

dent’s position. These interviews

will be held in the Copenhagen

Central School District Cafeteria

on Tuesday evening, November

16, 2010, beginning at 7:00 p.m.

We welcome your participation

and hope you’ll be able to join us.

Pointers from PIRC - Handling Change

What can you do to help your children handle changes in their lives? Have routines in place that do not need to

change, such as morning routines or bedtime routines, etc.

Talk with your children about changes, big or small, that are going to affect them.

Involve your older children in decisions that affect them, listening to their concerns.

Be their role model. How well you cope with change will determine how well your children handle change.

Student Parking

We have gained back a portion of the upper/front parking lot. This has taken significant pressure off the situation in the back parking lot. As a re-sult, we will allow SENIORS only to resume parking in the back lot. This was communicated to staff and seniors on October 14. Please keep in mind that this may be a temporary situation and is completely dependent on the needs of the con-struction crew working in front of the building. If/when they need to assume the entire parking lot, we will revert back to staff parking out back and no student parking on campus.

Painless Ways to Contribute to Your School

During these difficult fiscal times, there are sev-eral ways you can contribute to your school without spending more. You could consider the following: Signing up for CCS using your Target Red Card. Donating your Coke Rewards points to CCS. Sending your Boxtops for Education in to school. Sending your Campbell’s soup labels in to

school. If you have questions, direct them to Mrs. O’Shaughnessy or Mrs. Fazio at 688.4411.

Leadership Day

On October 28, student leaders in 11th and 12th grades attended a leadership day hosted by JCC. While there, they attended workshops by Playfair and presentations by famous people including Her-man Boone (former head coach of the Titans football team featured in the movie, Remember the Titans), and Slam Poet, Asia.

Dear Parents/Guardians, School appears to be off to a good start and I continue to be impressed with the devotion of our teacher’s and character of our students. The Copenhagen com-munity should be proud of their school. One fundamental value that I have noticed here is the de-sire to be proactive. One particu-lar plan that continues to be honed in order to prevent prob-lems has been the Response to Intervention (RTI) plans. Infor-mation related to this plan is available on our website at: http://www.ccsknights.org/137110127112448240/site/default.asp. In an effort to keep every-one informed, I’d like to high-light a few things about this pro-gram. Our RTI plan has ex-panded to include K-2 grade this year. Students in these grades

have all participated in Universal Screenings in reading and tar-geted instruction for those deemed at risk has already begun. This targeted instruction is not always provided by remedial in-structors in a separate location. Never have I seen a more moti-vated group of educators continu-ing to strive to help their students succeed in the classroom. Par-ents of those students receiving targeted instruction have been provided written notification and are encouraged to contact their child’s classroom teacher regard-ing specific hints on how they can help their child. One specific intervention that I have found very helpful was pro-vided to me by Jim Wright, a school psychologist and adminis-trator from Syracuse. It’s called Paired Reading and it is outlined on his website at:

http://interventioncentral.org/index.php/reading-fluency/111-paired-reading. A friend of mine in the Morris-ville School District has organ-ized a group of parent volunteers to provide this intervention to students in their district with con-siderable success. If you are in-terested in volunteering within our school district, I’d encourage you to contact me. As always, If you have any ques-tions or concerns, please contact me at 688-4411 or [email protected]. Sincerely,

Director of Student Services

Parent Conferences will be held on Thursday, November 18th from 12:00-7:00 p.m. for

AND Friday, November 19th from 12:00-3:20 p.m. for grades K-12.

STUDENTS IN GRADES K-12 WILL BE DISMISSED AT 11:30 A.M. ON BOTH THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 18TH AND FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 19TH.

Lunch will not be served on those days.

There will also be no school on Wednesday, November 24th, Thursday, November 25th, and Friday, November 26th in observance of Thanksgiving.

Whether it is a matter of deciding not to have school due to weather conditions in the morning or choosing to close early, this is a time of year when such decisions must be made. As unpredictable as weather is, some of those decisions will look foolish shortly after they are made. However, the choice will be made with a great deal of thought and consideration and with the safety of our children in mind. School Messenger, a computerized program, will again be utilized to notify each and every student’s home of school delays and/or closing. If your phone number has changed, please notify the school. Information on school closing is also broadcast on radio stations WATN AM 1240, WTOJ MAJIC 103.1/104.3 FM, WBDR THE BORDER 106.7, 94 ROCK WOTT 94.1 FM, THE FOX 100.7 FM, WTNY, (Froggy 97), WCIZ, WUZZ, WBRV, WLLG, www.WatertownDailytimes.com AND TV stations WWNYTV, WWTI and YNN. The decisions to close or delay openings will be made by 6:45 a.m. and then transmitted to those stations. A number of other phone calls also need to be made from the school, so please do not call to ask if school is closed. Listen to the radio or watch television.

Just a reminder to parents that their children need to be dressed properly for winter weather. This includes coats, hats, mittens or gloves, and protective footwear. It is also recommended that students wear brightly colored clothing to improve their visibility in bad weather.

Universal Pre-K Mrs. Combs, Mrs. Sullivan and Ms.

Farney During October, the pre-school students learned about many things. Pre-K started the month with a week all about fall. Each student in the class brought in a baggie of fall items from home to fill our sen-sory table where we were able to examine these leaves, nuts, corn and other autumn goodies. We danced with ribbon sticks as we pretended we were falling leaves. We erected an autumn “tree” in our classroom and decorated its branches with col-orful leaves that we traced and cut from construction paper. Next we learned all about yummy pizza! We mixed and kneaded some spicy smelling pizza dough in the sensory table, made slices of paper pizza smothered with our favorite top-pings, and paid a visit to Jacobs’ Place where the Jacobs family showed us how they make their deli-cious pizza pies! Towards the end of the month we talked about fire safety. We took another field trip to the Copenhagen Fire Station, got to see the fire equipment and fire trucks there, practiced stop, drop, and roll, and made Dalmatian headbands to wear. We finished the month with a harvest themed week in which we cleaned the gooey guts out of a pumpkin, talked about feelings using jack-o-lanterns, painted real pump-kins, and made cheesy jack-o-lanterns that we could eat. The week concluded with our Fall Festival Celebration. We ate some yummy treats and paraded around town decked out in our costumes. The Pre-K students are looking for-ward to starting the month of No-vember off by learning all about shapes and pirates! We are going to plan and cook our first ever “PreK

gives Thanks” dinner to enjoy before Thanksgiving vacation.

Kindergarten

Mrs. Scholler and Mrs. Graves The month of October was very busy. The children enjoyed the Halloween Parade. Thank you to all who contributed party supplies. Thank you to Mrs. Waugh in the cafeteria for our pizza supplies and to the Copenhagen Ladies Auxiliary for our pink cotton candy. It was yummy!!! We will be breaking into reading groups this month. We have been completing several literacy ac-tivities about letters, letter sounds and rhyming to introduce beginning reading skills. Please read daily to your child. Book It! is a great way to reinforce reading and earn a free personal pan pizza from Pizza Hut. Please return your slip when it is completed each month. As the weather becomes colder, please dress your child appro-priately with hats and gloves. It can be very cold as we go to the busses. Also, please practice zipping coats at home, as this will help at the end of the day as we prepare to go home. The classroom can be very chilly first thing in the morning. If you would like to leave a labeled sweater or sweatshirt in the class-room, that would be fine. Parent-Teacher Conferences are on Thursday, November 18 and Friday, November 19. Reminders will be sent home prior to your con-ference. We look forward to meting with each of you. The letters for the month will be Mm, Ii and Hh. The vocabu-lary words will be brown, on, green, you, gray, and it. Please continue to practice sight words at home daily. Sight words can be found on the

website each Fri-day Note. We will begin a new Author Study this month. The featured au-thor will be Jan Brett. She wrote books such as The Hat, The Mitten, Gingerbread Baby, Goldilocks and the Three Bears and Berlioz the Bear.

1st Grade Mrs. Hefferon and Ms. Strianese

November is full of thanks-giving. It is also full of map skills, penmanship, adding, and reading good books! Please keep practicing the sight words and counting to 50. Remem-ber, reading stories aloud to your child at this young age is very bene-ficial. With cold weather fast approach-ing, it is important that the children are able to dress themselves in their winter clothing. This really makes a difference at dismissal time! Also, please work on shoe tying if your child is unable to do so. We look forward to seeing and talking with everyone at parent con-ferences this month.

2nd Grade Mrs. Reed and Ms. Pridell

Remember that spelling lists go home each Monday. Save all of these lists. We continue to put words from the old lists on the tests. Also check Friday’s book bag for the weekly work packet and work note.

We are NOT participating in Book It this year but please continue with the At Home Reading Folders.

2nd Grade RIF Bake Sale - December 1st. Please remember to send in some goodies.

Parent Conferences - We look forward to seeing you on No-vember 18th and 19th.

Veteran’s Day Display – Please stop by the main hall and view our wonderful veterans display. It is filled with pictures and short biographies of veterans and service-men from our community. If you would like to add someone from your family please contact Mrs. Reed.

3rd Grade Mrs. Ratliff and Mrs. Morgan

This month in Mrs. Mor-gan’s classroom, our reading theme is called Disaster. Also, this theme tells us about three major disasters in the past. Mrs. Ratliff’s students are working on documentaries about unusual animals. Please continue reading each evening with your child as it will certainly benefit them. In addition, it also counts for our BOOK-IT pro-gram, which everyone should be reading for. We have finished our sci-ence units on plants and animals and are now looking at various commu-nities around the world for social studies. In math, we are beginning our multiplication facts from zero through five. Extra reinforcement at home would be helpful for the chil-dren. Reminders will be sent home for our upcoming parent/teacher con-ferences on November 18th and 19th. We look forward to seeing you then.

4th Grade Mrs. McCabe and Mrs. Carlson

It is hard to believe we are already into November and report cards go home in a few weeks. The first ten weeks flew by too quickly. Conferences are right around the cor-ner.

We are well into our New

York social studies book. The stu-dents are becoming very aware of New York’s many landforms. We are learning the names of our impor-tant lakes, rivers and mountains. The map skills we learned in Sep-tember are helping us locate the places we are reading about.

We are starting a unit on the Native American tribes that lived in New York before the European ex-plorers arrived. The Iroquois Con-federacy will be studied over the next few weeks. The students will become familiar with their customs and all aspects of their way of life. We will have some special projects to work on as we learn more about them.

We have finished our sci-ence unit on rocks and minerals. We are now studying the solar system in Mrs. McCabe’s class and Mrs. Carl-son’s class is studying plants. We did have success with our monarch butterflies. Both classes had cater-pillars that turned to beautiful butter-flies. We finally found a warm sunny day and away they flew.

Multiplication will be our math focus for the next few weeks. Any extra practice with the facts will give the students an advantage. Just practicing in the car as you travel to town will help.

As cold weather approaches keep in mind that students do go out on nice days for recess. Warm cloth-ing is a must. Also lunch does come late in grade 4 so morning snack time is needed. Many children need a nutritious snack to help them through the long morning.

5th Grade

Mrs. Mastascusa and Mrs. Spooner And yet another month has slipped away. Time is certainly fly-ing by in our busy, hectic fifth grade

classrooms. Mrs. Mastascusa and Mrs. Spooner have both been involved in Smart board Certification training. We have chosen to do a project that will incorporate skills from the Liter-acy training we received last year. It will have great utility in grades K through 5. We have finished our biogra-phy study. Students read biogra-phies about famous people in early American history, and then wrote a report about them. We will next be-gin an author study of Jerry Spin-nelli. In Social Studies, our focus continues to be the United States and Canada. We have learned about the physical features of both countries, and will now learn about each of these countries’ history. Again, we will begin our study of other coun-tries by learning first about our own, Then, we will use our country as a basis for comparison. In Science, students are studying about the physical and chemical weathering of the earth. We look forward to meeting with you at Parent Conferences. Re-minders will be sent out shortly.

English 9 Mrs. Griffin

During November, we will be discussing Greek and Roman my-thology and reading The Odyssey. We are continuing working on writ-ing essays using analy-sis of the Greek tragedies.

ter finishing the Russian Revolution and the classic allegory Animal Farm, we are moving on to propa-ganda, WWII, and the Holocaust. We will be reading Night by Elie Wiesel. Video Production: Students finished stop action videos at the end of September and they will have completed horror movie scenes by Halloween. Our next endeavors will include public service announcements and musical montages. We hope to have samples of student work on the school wiki soon! Stay tuned!

Global History 9 Mr. Cain

The freshmen have been working their way through the an-cient civilizations of the world. Af-ter stops in Egypt, Mesopotamia, India and China we have started our discussion of Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome. In all of these areas we have been talking about the im-pact of these civilizations, as well as studying their geography, econom-ics, political systems, and society.

We have also written our first two essays. The very first essay we wrote was a Document Based Question on the Neolithic Revolu-tion – the switch from small-hunting and gathering groups to settled farm-ing villages. The second essay that was assigned was a Thematic Essay on belief systems. DBQ and The-matic Essays are the two styles of essays that students will have to know for the Regents Exam, and we practice them often. It is so impor-tant, that writing is 25% of the over-all grade in Global History.

Global History 10

Mr. Cain The 10th grade class has fired

out of the blocks and we are rapidly working our way through the late 1700s and early 1800s. Our first two areas of focus have been the Indus-trial Revolution, which many stu-dents found interesting, and political changes in England, which in itself isn’t very exciting, but we used the history as a starting point for a dis-cussion on modern politics and the stance that our modern political par-ties take on different issues. The first 10th grade essay was assigned in the middle of Octo-ber. It was a DBQ on the Industrial Revolution. Just like the 9th grade class, writing makes up 25% of a student’s grade in Global History 10. We will be practicing essays often this year as we prepare for the June Regents Exam.

The CCS Booster Club would like to thank everyone who helped make our second annual “Knights Under the Lights” a huge success. With the help of McQuaid and Bannigan, Lawman Construction, United Rental, the Lewis County Highway Depart-ment, and especially Garrett Wheeler, our CCS high school soccer teams were able to play soccer under the lights during our “Pink Week” campaign. Thanks to Rob at McQuaid and Bannigan for their generous food donations also.

Our first “Kiss a Pig” con-test was a huge success. Athletes, coaches, and faculty competed to earn the most money and for 25¢ per vote, students, faculty and

parents were able to chose who they would like to see kiss the pig. Gracious winners were Becca Edwards, Morgan Kiernan, Phillip Clarke, Ms. Henry, Ms. Mastascusa, and Mr. Thomson. Thank you to Jacqueline Kloster for helping with the pig!

Thanks also go to Sara Hovendon and Danielle Eisel for all of their planning for a success-ful pep rally.

Thanks to generous dona-tions, the Booster Club was able to sell raffle tickets for a variety of baskets. Donations came from the girls’ tennis team, girls’ var-sity soccer team, boys’ JV and varsity soccer teams, boys’ and girls’ modified soccer teams, girls’ cheerleading team, the

PTO, the Spanish Club, Carol Putman, the Town Talk, Ken’s Hardware, LoFink’s, and Hiedi’s Barber and Beauty.

A special thanks to all high school soccer teams and their coaches for playing in pink. Unfortunately, the tennis team was unable to wear pink due to the weather, but their “pink” spirit was evident all week. An extra special thanks to Troy Buckley for being the homecoming DJ.

Through basket raffles, the “Kiss a Pig” contest, conces-sions and a homecoming dance, the Booster Club was able to do-nate over $1500. As always, thank you to the administration for their support of this event.

We have held signups for the start of the winter sports sea-son. The only teams that have not had signups are the modified bas-ketball teams, and their signups will occur sometime at the end of November or beginning of De-cember. Please note the follow-ing important dates: November 1, 2010 – First

Date of Practice for Modi-fied Wrestling

November 15, 2010 – First Date of Practice for Varsity Wrestling

November 22, 2010 – First Day of practice for JV and Varsity Cheerleading and Basketball

November 17, 2010 at 7:00 PM - Winter Sports Parent and Athlete Meeting in the

Band Room The winter sports sched-ule is almost completely set, there will be one or two minor addi-tions and changes over the next couple of weeks before we will consider it finalized. The sched-ule as it currently stands is avail-able on www.viewmyschedule.com. In addition all schedules are posted on the Athletic Depart-ment’s Website.

As we approach the winter season, I would like to remind our spectators and fans that parking for the winter season will be lim-ited. All spectators are being asked to use the gym door en-trance from the back parking lot. The front doors to the building will not be available as they were last year. I encourage you to

walk or car-pool to games when-ever this is con-venient. In addition, we may only park on far side of Loud Street. Please do not park on the school side of the street. Buses, snow-plows, and emergency vehicles must be able to get down Loud Street at all times and in all weather conditions. In addition, our buses currently load and unload on the school side of Loud Street. Thank you in advance for your cooperation on this matter. Go Knights!

All college applications should be submitted by Thanksgiving break at the latest. In most cases, the earlier you apply, the earlier you hear back. Even though schedules are very busy, students must visit schools prior to attending, and apply to any of interest. Please do not hesitate to call our office at 688-2573 if you have any questions. We will help with the application process and assist you in setting up any college visitations you may be interested in attending. Seniors are able to sit in on a class of their choice at most schools.
