As the holidays approach, special family times may bring tears and memories of young lives cut short. Whatever holiday you celebrate, it can be a little easier to get through with some planning and encouragement from those who have already been there. Remember, often the anticipation of the holiday feels worse than the holiday itself. Whatever you plan, try to focus on doing something meaningful and tangible in remembrance of your baby. Tears and moments of sadness are okay, for they are expressions of love. The old adage rings true: “take one day at a time,” and allow some space for yourself and your innermost feelings. Your precious baby is still very much a part of your life and occupies a permanent and tender spot in your heart—memories forever yours. Here are a few of our suggestions on creating memories:

Don’t be afraid to make changes; it really can make things less painful

- Share as a family thoughts about lighting a special candle

- Open presents Christmas Eve instead of Christmas Day

- Have dinner at a different time

- Attend a different synagogue or church for services

- Place flowers on an altar

- Plan the vacation you always talked about taking

Assisting others may provide comfort

- Select an age appropriate gift and give it to charity

- Donate the money you would have spent on your child’s gift to charity

- Adopt a needy family

- Invite a guest who might otherwise be alone to share your festivities

Whether it’s greeting cards, holiday baking, putting up the tree, lighting the menorah, decorating outside, or having a family dinner, ask these questions before making decisions:

- Have we involved or considered our other children?

- Do other family members or I really enjoy doing this?

- Is this a task that can be shared by other family members?

- Would the holidays be the holidays without it?

How to sign the holiday card:

- Some sign it “The _______ Family” without the use of first names

- Some use first names putting “angel” in front of the infant’s name

- If the thought of sending holiday cards is simply too exhausting, yet you discover that some of your friends are still unaware of the baby’s death, try this: enclose the funeral service card inside the already pre-printed greeting card. Parents have found the response from friends comforting.

- Have the cards pre-printed with your greeting and the names

- Some suggest not using cards with angels on the front the first year as each card is a reminder of your loss and you repeatedly inflict unnecessary pain as you open each one to sign it.

How many stockings should you hang?

- Some put them all up, including one for the “absent” baby

- Some hang no stocking at all and never have

- Some write thoughts and feelings about the baby on notes and place them in that special stocking. Family members are free to read them. This provides a special opportunity for younger children to express feelings

How do we make the baby part of the holiday?

- Some light a special candle to quietly include their angel

- One family buys a poinsettia for their home as a living memorial to their baby during the holiday season; another decorates their tree with baby’s breath

- Another family has established a second tree, “the children’s tree,” with ornaments reflecting each child’s interests, activities, or an ornament made by the child. Naturally, there are lots of angels.

KIDS Network Receives Two Honors for Their Work

Safe Kids Kansas has given the KIDS Network its Outstanding Coalition Organization Award. Safe

Kids Kansas is a statewide nonprofit coalition of about 70 organizations and businesses dedicated

to preventing accidental injuries to Kansas children from birth to age 14. In addition, Christy

Schunn was awarded the KU Pediatrics Community Partnership Award in recognition of the

collaborative work of the KIDS Network.

Safe Sleep Instructor Train-the-Trainer More Than Two-Dozen New Instructors Trained

Two days of safe sleep training in Wichita have sent 26 new instructors into the field and spread those best

practices further across the state. The sessions, held Sept. 28 and 29, at the Sedgwick County Child Advocacy

Center, were attended by 25 returning instructors as well as the 26 new ones. A total of 28 Kansas counties

now have instructors – and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, gained one as training drew a student from that city as

well. That’s certainly another sign that the need exists near and far,

and that our state is a leader in meeting it.

The strategy is aimed at the counties with the highest infant

mortality rates, though many Kansas counties still need instructors.

The Ford County SSI was lost to attrition, and that instructor had

covered 19 western counties. The training is funded by a KDHE

maternal child health grant. Instructors work in a variety of settings

– hospitals, doctors’ offices, public health, nonprofit organizations,

businesses, schools and colleges – and each one is charged with

training at least 10 others in best safe sleep practices and facilitate

one community baby shower each year.

Go to www.kidsks.org/safe-sleep-instructors to learn more or find

an instructor.

Making Connections to Make Progress

Two Topekans who reached out to the KIDS Network about getting involved in efforts to combat SIDS recently

held a walk that raised over $2,900 for research and have joined the KIDS board in the process.

Carrie Steinle and Sammantha Glenn, both of whom are SIDS parents and work at

Stormont-Vail Medical Center, organized the Oct. 7 SIDS and Infant Loss Walk that

brought out nearly 150 people and some local television coverage as well. “It was a

very emotional experience and a lot of people want to help,” Glenn said. “We met

so many families we have not met before.” The money raised will benefit the work

of Dr. Hannah Kinney of Boston Children’s Hospital, who is researching brain-stem

links to SIDS. “Tell us what you hope to do in Topeka and we can work

collectively,” Christy Schunn told Steinle and Glenn after they described their plan.

The effort has built needed connections to the Topeka area, ones that the KIDS Network intends to support.

Safe Sleep Community Baby Showers Two Wichita Baby Showers Draw More Than 110

A long-running community baby shower drew 82

mothers-to-be to the Boys & Girls Club in Wichita on Oct.

21.

It was the 15th community baby shower put on by the

Wichita Black Nurses Association, and “one of the best we

have had,” Christy Schunn said. Over the years, 1,184

mothers-to-be have taken part and 1,484 cribs have been given out.

Contributing to effort were volunteers from a local sorority and nursing

and physician assistant students from Wichita State University.

In past years, the nurses association shower offered Spanish-language

sessions, but this year, for the first time, a separate shower was held for

Spanish speakers, in conjunction with Cafe con Leche health screening fair

on Sept. 23 at Wichita North High School. That program

drew 31 attendees for safe sleep training.

The focus of training at both the showers illustrated a

positive trend in that participants are showing a greater

level of knowledge about basic safe sleep practices.

That is allowing the instruction to go deeper and spend

more time discussing the barriers to safe sleep that

moms and caregivers face.

Healthy Moms, Healthy Babies

In partnership with the Kansas Infant Death and SIDS (KIDS) Network, hosted their 6th Luke’s Community

Baby Shower Saturday, November 4th at the Junction City Nazarene Church. The event is named for local

SIDS baby Luke Nelson and co-facilitated by his mother and KIDS Network board member, Jill Nelson. The

event brought in over 60 expectant moms and their support person. Luke’s

Community Baby Shower is funded as a part of the Healthy Start Grant that

Delivering Change received along with the help of Central National Bank,

JC Noon Kiwanis, Meritrust Credit Union and Kyrsten Ross with Remax

Signature Properties. https://www.facebook.com/DeliveringChange/

Bump to Baby of Reno County hosts a safe sleep community baby shower

in Reno County on October 7, 2017. Thank you to all who joined us the

shower! It was a success thanks to the support from families, vendors,

community sponsors and volunteers!

Higher Grant Funding Urged for KIDS Network

The Kansas Children’s Cabinet – responsible for suggesting how money should be distributed each year

from the national tobacco settlement – is recommending to the governor’s office that the KIDS Network

receive $96,000 in grant funding for fiscal year 2019. The recommendation would return the Network to the

level it received before state budget cuts took it to the current $82,000. Reinstatement of funds signifies

KIDS has met its outcomes and that funding to reduce infant mortality has been minimal. “This is the best

news we have heard in three years,” Executive Director Christy Schunn told the KIDS board in November

while urging the recommendation and support be shared with legislators.

In other grant news, KIDS Network learned that it will receive

$119,000 from KDHE to continue building the statewide safe sleep

infrastructure.

Haley’s Scramble raises over $19,000. Eight-six golfers, generous

sponsors and dedicated volunteers combined to net a record

$19,214.68 for the KIDS Network at the annual 17th Annual Haley’s

SIDS Scramble Golf Tournament on Aug. 28. The scramble at

Wichita’s Crestview Country club was sponsored by KU Wichita

Pediatrics and golfers and volunteers alike benefited from a

beautiful day for August. Five bereaved families took part this year in the scramble, a

memorial to all babies who have died in Kansas. Befitting the KIDS Network’s

commitment to supporting research, 10 percent of the scramble’s proceeds – $1,925 –

were donated to the new Center for Research on Infant Birth and Survival (CRIBS) at KU School of Medicine-

Wichita.

Save the Date: Step Up for KIDS is April 21,

2018. The Step Up for KIDS committee is

gearing up for the annual fund-raiser that

bolsters KIDS’ mission of providing grief

services and training, raising community

awareness, and supporting medical

research. The event will be Saturday, April

21, and once again be at Old Cowtown

Museum in Wichita. The 5K race, memorial

walk, balloon release, and brunch couldn’t

be pulled off without the assistance of

many volunteers, so please contact the

KIDS office if you can help out, or click

here.

Members of one longtime team, Clayton’s Crew, have already contributed to this year’s effort by holding a

fund-raising walk in Cimarron on Oct. 14. The walk was organized by SIDS parent, Jackie Vath, who wanted

to do a fund-raiser close to home. With 29 participants and 21 sponsors, Clayton’s Crew raised $2,400 to

support the KIDS Network mission. The first-time event is evidence of KIDS statewide reach, Executive

Director Christy Schunn said.
