As your students experienced last year, we will continue to utilize online scheduling as the means for students to register for classes. I will be working with our staff throughout the month of January to prepare our curriculum guide and our counselors will be in all English classes throughout the first week of February to begin the scheduling process with our freshman, sophomores and juniors. I will update you on the rest of the scheduling procedures in my February installment. In addition to all that is occurring at Copley High School, we must take the time to pause and celebrate all of our students’ accomplishments throughout this first half of the year. First, congratulations to Kaylie West who was recognized at our November Board meeting as our November Athlete of the Month and Kelsey Thelen, our November Student of the Month. Whether it be our student-athletes, our student actors performance in our fall production, the accomplishments of our instrumental and vocal music departments, the awards won by our speech/debate students, the exemplary Veterans Day program and the countless other programs and events to celebrate, I hope you can see why I am so proud of our high school and community. Most importantly, our students are excelling in the classroom as you can see from the numerous students on the following pages who achieved academic excellence throughout the first grading period. I would like to wish each of you a safe and happy holiday season. Please enjoy the time with family and friends and I look forward to continuing our work together in the new year. December is finally here. One student in my advisory group recently shared, “I can’t believe it’s already December.” I can share the same sentiment as the first months of the school year have truly felt like they have flown by. December and January are sure to be filled with the excitement of the holiday season, as well as the stress of trying to ensure all is accomplished throughout this hectic time of the year. The year is off and rolling. I never thought the days would pass so quickly as I transition from teaching to administration. I am becoming more and more excited to come to work every day! In my short time here, I have come to know many new and wonderful students, families, and community members. When I was completing my graduate program, my academic advisor and professor, Martin Kane, emphasized to his students the importance of finding the right school. I am reassured of this “big idea” every time I interact with a member of the community, a family, parent, or student I am thankful I found this position in Copley High School. Thank you all again for the warm reception and continued support. As the school year has progressed, I am thankful for the excellent staff members we have at Copley High School. I would like to publically thank one of our staff members, Mr. Kimani Grant. Mr. Grant came to Copley High School as our school security officer. He’s my “go to” guy, my right hand man. Mr. Grant has been influential in working with our students to ensure that our building is safe and free from many issues. His ability to talk to students and mediate problems is outstanding. Mr. Grant and I intend to work with you to help to alleviate any problems your student may have at Copley High School. If you have any concerns, please stop by or give us a call. In this issue of Smoke Signals, I would like to proactively address the morning student arrival procedures because they impact the safety of our students and staff. In the morning, many parents have been dropping off their students in the “bus only” drop off area and faculty parking lot. It is important that our building’s drop-off procedures are clear. Parents need to drop off their children at the football field parking lot. Parents need to follow the loop designated by cones in the parking lot. Your cooperation in following this procedure is essential for our students’ and staff’s safety. Thank you for your cooperation. (Diagram is available in the August-September issue of Smoke Signals)

Often, parents and students think of the Assistant Principal as “the bad guy” or the person responsible for detentions and suspensions. I hope that in the coming months my work in developing a system of positive rewards helps to change that perception. You may be aware of Copley High School’s Student of the Month and Student Athlete of the Month Programs. Each month the teachers and coaches nominate students and athletes based upon superior achievement in the classroom or on the athletic fields. One student in each category is recognized on a bulletin board in the Commons and at the monthly Board Meeting. They also receive a certificate valid for a free meal at the Montrose Chick-a-Fila and an opportunity to invite a group of their friends to accompany them for dinner. The second program of positive rewards that will soon be initiated is called The Copley Pride Tribe. This program will allow teachers to nominate a number of students on a monthly basis to become members of the Copley Pride Tribe. Students will be selected based upon demonstration of character traits outlined on our district calendar. The students who are “caught” doing good deeds will be rewarded with “Wampum”, or Indian money, valid for rewards at the school. I am looking forward to recognizing more model students in the months to come.

Parents and students, please continue to bring issues and concerns to my attention. I look forward to my continued service to the community, Copley High School, and our excellent students.

I wish everyone a safe and happy holiday season.

Sincerely,

Rick Gurski

Year-By-Year College Planning Guide for Parents and Students

MIDDLE SCHOOL • Planning starts with curriculum choices. Some choices in middle school can affect high school curriculum. • Develop sound study skills, such as outlining, time management, and note-taking. • It’s never too soon to research paying for college. 9th GRADE • Choose outside activities. It’s not the number that matters—it’s the passion. • Start keeping track of accomplishments, activities, and honors. Update the list each semester throughout

high school. • Get to know guidance counselors and teachers. Make sure they know you, for all the right reasons. • It’s not too soon to start casually visiting campuses and attending local college fairs. 10TH GRADE • Continue on the path of challenging college-prep courses. • It’s time for self-assessment. Students should identify and focus on their favorite and strongest subjects and

activities. Career and personality assessment tests can offer direction. KUDER is available at www.copley-fairlawn.org Go to the high school page. Click on Resources. Click on Kuder. Click on Kuder webpage. Click on Get Started. Click on New User. Fill in all information and create a username and password. The CHS access code is N3256542MMC

Click on Take An Assessment from the side bar. Some sophomores take the PSAT as a practice test for the SAT in October. All sophomores are encouraged to take the PLAN as a practice test for the ACT in November.

11TH GRADE • Admissions committees look closely at junior-year courses and performance. Study hard. • The college search begins in earnest. Identify the factors that are important in a school: college majors,

activities, geography, size, religious affiliation, etc. Develop a list, research the schools, and start college visitations. Seek help from guidance counselors and teachers.

• PSAT is taken in the fall; ACT and SAT subject tests are taken in the spring.

12TH GRADE • Pare the list to a handful of colleges. • Retake SAT and/or ACT, and complete applications in the fall. • January is financial aid month—families fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). • Students receive decisions from colleges and make final visits in April. Deposits are due by May 1.

FINANCIAL AID GUIDE

TYPES OF FINANCIAL AID AVAILABLE • GRANTS and SCHOLARSHIPS: Money you do not have to pay back; available from many sources.

Check with your high school, local library, or the college you plan to attend. • WORK STUDY: Money earned from work used to help pay for school • LOANS: Money borrowed that must be repaid (with interest)

FEDERAL FINANCIAL AID ELIGIBILITY To be eligible you must:

• Have financial need • Have a high school diploma, GED, or pass an independently administered test approved by the U.S.

Department of Education • Be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen • Register with Selective Service, if required • Complete forms as required • Make satisfactory academic progress

Financial aid eligibility is the difference between the cost of education and the Expected Family Contribution (EFC). A federal formula performs a needs analysis to determine the EFC. Cost of education includes tuition and fees, room and board, books and supplies, transportation, and miscellaneous expenses.

HOW TO APPLY FOR FEDERAL AND STATE AID 1. Students must complete a FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) to be considered for need-based grants,

loans, and work study jobs. To submit a FAFSA, first apply for PIN numbers for the student and one parent at www.pin.ed.gov. Second, FAFSA Worksheets for the school year 2011-2012 will be available at www.fafsa.ed.gov in late December. Parents need to complete the worksheets before they fill out the FAFSA. Third, the FAFSA will be available at www.fafsa.ed.gov on January 1. Deadlines will vary by college and state (they may be as early as February 1) but all families should electronically submit their FAFSAs by February 15. Students should check with the college they will attend for FAFSA deadline dates.

2. Students will receive a Student Aid Report (SAR) after the FAFSA is processed. Information is also sent to the

college(s) named on the FAFSA. If students don’t receive a SAR within seven days of filing online, or if they need another copy, they should call 1-800-433-3243 for a duplicate SAR.

3. Students should check with the college(s) they expect to attend because additional financial aid applications/forms are

often required. 4. The student’s selected college Financial Aid Office(s) will send an award letter to the student indicating the types of aid

the student is eligible to receive. This award letter may not be a hard copy. The information may come from the university to the student’s e-mail address.

Scholarships

At most colleges and universities today, scholarships are awarded to a very select group of students. These students are the very best students academically or athletically. Many of them receive multiple offers of scholarships because colleges and universities are interested in attracting outstanding students to their campuses. Who do colleges and universities consider “scholarship material?”

Each college and university will consider several factors when selecting students to receive scholarships, and each institution weighs these factors differently. However, generally speaking, they all will look at each potential scholarship winner’s high school grade point average (freshman through junior years) and college entrance test scores (ACT and SAT).

Additionally, some colleges and universities will ask applicants to write essays. Some institutions also will require that applicants submit letters of recommendation from teachers, counselors, or employers.

Finally, some institutions give talent awards that may be called “scholarships.” These awards are often given for a special talent that applicants possess, such as skill in a sport or an artistic area (art, music, dance).

The only way you will know if you are eligible for a scholarship is to contact the colleges, universities, and technical schools you are considering. So, don’t delay. Visit their web sites, call, or write today!

Don’t forget to check the scholarship list in your monthly Guidance Notes. LOCAL SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION More than $75,000 in local scholarships will be awarded to members of the senior class through funds generated by groups and individuals within the Copley-Fairlawn City Schools community. Applications (one application is good for all awards) for all 80 local scholarships will be available online at www.copley-fairlawn.org, or through Mrs. Kramer in the Guidance Office, beginning February 1st. Completed applications are due back to the Guidance Office by February 15th.

The counselors will attach a copy of your official transcript, write a recommendation if needed, and mail the entire package to the college. PLEASE NOTE: On many applications, there is a section regarding financial aid. Always complete this part, whether you feel you will be eligible for any aid/scholarship help or not. You can only be considered for financial help if you fill out the proper form. ALSO NOTE: Applications submitted without appropriate postage will be mailed. A $1 fee per application will be added to your senior debt total.

College applications that need to be submitted prior to January 1st must be received in the Guidance Office by Friday, December 10th to guarantee mailing before winter break.

Acceptance and Honors As counselors, we would very much like to keep abreast of each senior’s final college/technical school/ career choice. Some schools send us copies of acceptance letters, but with students applying to two or more schools, we’re not always sure when a final decision has been reached. In addition, we’d like to be kept up to date on any awards or scholarships that have been received or any special college programs into which you have been accepted. Please provide to Mrs. Kramer a copy of your college scholarship award letters. Your help in these areas will be greatly appreciated. ACT Testing If you have not yet taken an ACT, consider registering for the February 12th test. A February testing would still be timely for many university fall admissions. The registration deadline for February’s testing opportunity is January 7th. Admission Terms Rolling Admission — A college reviews applications as the application form and all supporting data are completed. Some colleges send decisions as soon as the application is completed and reviewed, regardless of the time of the year. Other colleges accumulate applications and send decisions after a certain date. Early Decision — ED is a plan under which a student applies to the first-choice college early in the fall (usually by November 1) of the senior year and agrees by contract to enter that college if offered admission. (ED applicants are judged on the basis of their junior year test scores, class rank, and grades.) Decisions are rendered to early decision applicants in early December. If not accepted under early decision, a student is usually reconsidered for admission later in the senior year. Early Action — Early action follows the same application/notification timetable as early decision, but allows the accepted candidates until May 1 to accept or decline the offer of admission. Under early action programs, it is possible for an applicant to be denied admission outright and not automatically be deferred for later consideration.

12 Tips for Choosing a Career Dr. Robert Hoppock, the father of modern career information evaluation, gives this advice on choosing a vocation:

1. Choose an occupation because you like the work, not solely because of the rewards in money or prestige.

2. Choose an occupation that will use your abilities. 3. Choose an occupation in which there is likely to be an active demand for workers when you are

ready to go to work. 4. Do not choose an occupation just because a friend or someone else you admire chose it. 5. Avoid occupations that require abilities you don’t have. 6. Don’t confuse interest and ability. 7. Before making a final choice of occupation, find out all the things you might have to do in it.

Determine which of these will take most of your time. 8. Don’t expect to find a job in which you will never have to do anything you dislike. 9. Don’t stay permanently in a job in which you dislike most of the things you have to do. 10. Beware of biased information from recruiters and other sources. 11. Take all the advice people offer you, and then act on your judgment. 12. Remember Robert Louis Stevenson’s advice: “To know what you prefer, instead of humbly

saying ‘Amen’ to what the world tells you ought to prefer, is to have kept your soul alive.”

Dear Parents: Senate Bill #140 has presented a variety of educational options. One section of this bill is of immediate interest to you as a parent of a high school student (grades 9-12). This option is called the Post Secondary Education Option Program. The intent of this law is to create a variety of liberal learning activities for all students. The proposed rules establish procedures for the awarding of high school graduation credit and/or college credit to high school students enrolled in college courses. College can include community colleges, technical colleges, or regular four-year universities. Under certain plans, students may take advantage of free college tuition while other plans would require parents to pay. The legislature requires school districts to inform students and their parents of this program by March 1 of each year. Any student who desires to pursue this option must: 1) bring his or her parent to an appointment with his/her guidance counselor, or to the Post Secondary Education Option program in the Copley High School auditorium at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, February 17, 2011; 2) take the ACT in February if he/she has not previously taken this test; and 3) meet the guidelines established by the college. In order to participate in the Post Secondary Education Options Program in the fall of 2011 or spring of 2012, a student must inform a guidance counselor of his or her intent to participate in the program. To register for the February 12th ACT, go to www.actstudent.org by January 7th. Practice tests are available in the media center, guidance office, and online. If you would like more information about the Post Secondary Education Program, please feel free to call the high school guidance office at 664-4827. Cameron M. Ryba Principal

INFORMATION TO PARENTS ABOUT POST SECONDARY OPTIONS

IN ORDER TO PARTICIPATE IN THE POSTSECONDARY ENROLLMENT OPTIONS PROGRAM IN THE FALL OF 2011 OR SPRING OF 2012, A STUDENT MUST COMPLETE THE FOLLOWING REQUIREMENTS:

1. Sign an Intent to Participate form by March 30, 2011. This form must be on file in the Guidance Office.

2. Attend the Postsecondary Option meeting for parents on February 17, 2011 at 5:30

p.m. in the high school auditorium or complete an appointment with a guidance counselor to review this information below.

3. Apply by the application deadline posted by the chosen institution. 4. Take an ACT by February. To register for the February test, go to www.actstudent. org

and meet the January deadline.

Page 19: Copley High School Smoke Signalsprocedures in my February installment. In addition to all that is occurring at Copley High School, we must take the time to pause and celebrate all

Senate Bill #140 describes guidelines and procedures for the awarding of high school graduation credit and/or college credit to high school students enrolled in college courses. The following items summarize a portion of this bill: 1. If a student in grades 9, 10, 11, 12 is accepted into a college’s postsecondary education program, he

or she may enroll full or part-time for non-sectarian courses for high school and /or college credit. 2. Postsecondary Enrollment Options Available

Option A permits eligible students to enroll in college courses for college credit. Students electing this option will be required to pay all costs incurred, including tuition, books, materials, and fees.

Option B permits eligible students to enroll in college courses for college and high school graduation credit. Students electing this option will not be required to pay for tuition, books, materials, or fees associated with such courses. (Orientation parking, and transportation fees are not covered.)

Courses successfully completed under Option B will receive high school credit for graduation as appropriate.

3. School districts must award comparable credit for high school graduation, in terms of quantity and

quality, for successfully completed college work.

Any disputes between students and local boards of education, regarding high school credits granted for college work, may be appealed to the State Board of Education whose decision is final.

Student records must reflect evidence of successful completion of each course and the high school credit awarded. Additionally, all credit earned as a participant of the Postsecondary Enrollment Options program must note the name of the college.

4. The Copley-Fairlawn Board of Education has determined that a student enrolled in college courses under the guidelines of Option B will be given high school credit for course enrollment, if the student successfully completes the college course. It will not be calculated in the student’s high school grade point average.

PROGRAM ADVANTAGES ☻ Expands the curriculum available to students ☻ Provides opportunities for students to study in depth those areas of special interest or need ☻ Allows a student to earn college credit at no expense to parents in Option B ☻ Gives the student an opportunity to make some decisions about college through actual experiences ☻ Allows the student to earn high school and college credit at the same time ☻ Allows the student a gradual transition to university schooling ☻ Encourages parents to become involved earlier in the planning of a college career ☻ Allows the potential for a student to earn an associate Degree as well as a high school diploma ☻ Allows the student access to university counseling services

Page 20: Copley High School Smoke Signalsprocedures in my February installment. In addition to all that is occurring at Copley High School, we must take the time to pause and celebrate all

POTENTIAL RISKS AND CONSEQUENCES 1. Students will have an increased responsibility for learning, increased travel time, and increased time for

study. 2. Students could have increased financial obligations for their education if they choose Option A or if the

college course requires special tools or equipment. Participation may decrease the time available for part-time employment.

3. There may be reduced opportunities or time for participation in high school activities (athletics, music,

clubs, etc.) 4. Impressionable 16 and 17 year olds will be in a non-structured setting on the college campus with older

students. 5. Students who fail or withdraw from a college course may jeopardize their high school graduation. A

student who fails to complete a college course or who withdraws inappropriately from a college course will be required to reimburse the school district the amount of money equal to the amount subtracted from the District’s State Foundation monies. The grade earned will be noted as a Fail and will not be calculated in determining the student’s high school grade point average. The failing mark, however, will be included in the student’s college grade point average.

If the student does not pass at least five (5) credits and earn a grade point average of 1.0 for the quarter,

he/she will not be eligible to participate in non-graded extra-curricular activities. If a student’s grade point average falls between a 1.0 and 1.999 for the quarter, he/she must attend a formal academic support program provided by Copley-Fairlawn City Schools.

6. Students and parents participating in this program assume full social and academic responsibilities for the students enrolled.

1. Upon entrance to the program, a student must elect Option A or B as described on page

one. If a student enrolls in the same university after high school graduation, the university must award full credit for all courses successfully completed under either Option A or B.

2. Academic credit for high school graduation will be matched on a course for course basis.

College credits will be converted to Carnegie units. No student can schedule more than seven (7) courses during the school year.

COPLEY MUSIC BOOSTERS

UPDATES AND MEETING DATES

Please join us for our meetings at 7 pm in the CHS Main Office Conference Room. The dates are Dec. 7, Jan. 18, Feb. 8, March 15, April 12, May 10 & June 7. Hello Music Boosters and Families: With the rush and craziness of the fall season behind us, our many volunteers can take a much needed break and relax. Thank you to all of the dedicated people who faithfully stepped up to help at every football game, even the playoff game that didn't allow much warning time in which to prepare. We had quite a crew this year and Sharon Nagy and I truly appreciate all that you did for the Music Boosters. It was quite busy most of the time but also quite fun and rewarding. And for all the volunteers at the soccer and volleyball games, our heartfelt thanks are with you also. A special thanks goes to Melanie Horning who took over the responsibility of opening and running the Volleyball concessions this fall. Many hands truly do make light work! The Marching Band finished the year with a bang performing the best show of the season at the State Competition in Dublin. They looked and sounded wonderful and were certainly a crowd pleaser. Thanks to all the students who have been working so hard since August. You have made all of us in the community very proud for your efforts. And many thanks to Michael Foster, Vicki Smith and Kristi Forshey for their hard work and dedication to our students. Your creative talents and vision has made a lasting impression on all of us. The Citrus Sale is wrapping up in early December. Debbi Spangler has done an outstanding job with the sale. I hope you are all enjoying fresh Florida fruit as you are reading this letter. Thanks to Debbi and we look forward to her continued support with next year's sale. Sharon and Greg Schott will be running the winter concessions again this year and they will be looking for volunteers for those games and events. Email requests have already gone out regarding the sports schedule and I hope that everyone will check his or her schedule closely and volunteer for a shift or two. It is fun and a great way to help the Boosters while supporting your music student. Happy Holidays to All! Karen Martin

Very shortly, students will begin signing up for classes for next school year. Did you know Copley has a class in Networking? What about learning how to Program a computer, or design a Web Page? These are all courses offered at Copley High School. The Cisco Networking Academy program is a complete, four-semester program designed to teach students the skills needed to plan, design, build, maintain and support small to medium-sized computer networks. The Networking Academy program features hands-on, project-driven training in high-demand job skills. Students successfully completing all four semesters will have the opportunity to enter the workforce and/or further their education and training in the computer-networking field. After completion, students will have the opportunity to take the CCNA exam, qualifying them as a Cisco Certified Networking Associate (CCNA). In addition to learning a valuable skill, you can also get college credit for this class at The University of Akron. Each semester class taken at Copley High School can qualify for three credit hours at The University of Akron. If a student completes all four semesters at Copley, it is possible they will be able to obtain 12 credit hours of college credit. This is the equivalent of a semester of classes at The University of Akron!! Students interested in this course should have skills in basic computer software (such as Microsoft Word). In addition, we offer two semesters of Web Design at Copley. These courses will teach you the basics of Web Design, using both Dream Weaver and Expressions Web. You also get an opportunity to learn about photo enhancement programs, and animation. In the second semester course, students compete with other schools in the area in a web design competition. Winners of the competition attend a dinner and win a cash prize! Interested in learning Computer Programming? We offer that class too. This class uses the latest programming language, Visual Basic. Students learn how to design a user interface, create Windows and Web applications, develop mobile applications for smart phones and learn how to program with an interactive 3D graphics Program. We also do a unit developing movies with Movie Maker and digital movie cameras. If you would like to obtain more information about any of these courses, please feel free to contact Mrs. Lynn at 330.664.4999 ext. 1171, email me at [email protected] or stop by room 084. I can give you additional information and show you a quick tour of our lab.

Thanks to everyone who has graciously given their time in the early planning stages of AfterProm and to those parents that have made a donation to this event. We have a few committee chairs to fill: Clean-Up, Business

Donations, and some decorating. We have broken up the decorating task by area so if you would like to coordinate decorating an area, we'd love to have you. Please let me know if some committee strikes your fancy

and I'll add your name to the list to help. See the Afte Prom area on our web-site for details.

The next After Prom meeting will be held on December 15 at 7:00 pm in the CHS Main Office Conference Room.
