The first ever regional business expo will be hosted by the Superior Chamber of Commerce on Saturday, Sept. 26, 2004. The expo will be held at their new building located at 165 Main St. The expo is set to begin at 10:30 p.m. and run through 4:30 p.m. Following the expo Random Boutique of Superior and Nadines Attic from Globe will host a live fashion show.

The expo will feature booths from local businesses and service providers that you may not realize are available within the region. There is no fee to attend the event. Often we immediately think we need to run to the valley or Tucson to find that new outfit, one of a kind furniture piece or even for our beauty supplies and personal grooming. The Superior Chamber of Commerce wanted to help educate the region about business and services you may not know exist in and around the Copper Corridor. Some of the confirmed

businesses are: satellite internet providers, landscapers, one of kind a furniture, custom clothing, venue rental locations and many others. Patsy from Be My Guest salon in Superior will be giving demonstrations on make up application. Businesses will be coming from throughout the region including: Superior, Apache Junction, Miami, Gold Canyon, Florence, Globe, and Marana. For more information on the expo to attend or set up a booth contact the Superior Chamber of Commerce at 520-689-0200.

The St. Francis of Assisi annual car show and fiesta was once again a large success. There were over 160 cars that attended the car show, at least a hundred cakes donated for the cake walk, hundreds of bowls of menudo sold and countless tortillas rolled into burros. Dozens of volunteers all worked together to ensure that the event was well run, those volunteers worked for months to plan, organize and set the logistics for the entire event. The Fiestas kicked off with the annual parade. Manuel and Jessica Castillo were named the Grand Marshals for the parade. The two received the honor due to their leadership in the Catholic Youth Ministry; they are consistently volunteering in both the church and the community. Manuel is also a leader in the Knights of Columbus. This year the parade had 10 entries, the winners were: first place, Baile Folklorico Alma de Superior; second place went to Marcella Garcia who coordinated the former queen and queen candidate floats; third place went to 2013 Fiesta Queen Marissa Estatico and 2006 Fiesta Queen Jesse Sanchez for their float. This year the car show received some media attention from the Arizona Republic in the Cars section. There was a record number of guests in attendance due to the added publicity. A sea of people and cars could been seen from the east end of Main St. Many prizes were given out. The best of show awards were given to: Marissa with Intruders Car Club for Best of Show Bike and Trike; Tim McYntire, Kilque Car Club for Best of Show Truck with his Chevy Silverado; Best Car was awarded to Efren Cuevas, Kilque Car Club. DJ Supietown was the MC for the car show. This year a number of rappers with local ties to the community performed during the car show including Superior’s own J Rydah Silvas. This year there were two young ladies vying for Fiesta Queen, Emma Sanchez and Alisha Garcia. The two girls and their families worked hard to raise money with pastry bingos, cornhole tournaments and other fundraisers to earn the title of Fiesta Queen. At the 5 p.m. Mass on Saturday, Emma Sanchez was crowned Fiesta Queen. The celebration continued into the evening with entertainment by hip hop dancers coached by Billie Joe Villaverde, and Baile Folklorico Alma de Superior performed – both groups are comprised of youth from Superior. The crowd swelled to watch these two groups perform. The crowd was serenaded by Mariachi Alma Mexicana from Tucson on both Saturday and Sunday. DJ Manuel Guzman V emceed the event and provided music during the event.

The Panthers will be the first to say they didn’t play their best game last Friday against Pima in a 56 – 26 loss, their first of the season. The now fifth-ranked Panthers made too many mistakes against a good team to come away with the win. “Pima is a very talented team,” said Panthers’ head coach Ryan Palmer, who also acknowledged Pima’s home-field advantage. “Unfortunately we did not (play our best) and made too many mistakes.) Some of those mistakes included missed blocks, dropped passes, missed defensive assignments, and missed tackles. The Panthers can’t afford those types of miscues against a quality team like Pima. There were some bright spots for the Panthers despite the loss. Sophomore quarterback Gage Cruz threw for 283 yards and three touchdowns, one each to Matthew Zavala, Elias Olmos, and Michael Salazar. Zavala (118) and Salazar (119) combined for 237 receiving yards. Edgar Pacheco rushed for a touchdown in the game. He also led the defense with 13 tackles. Palmer was quick to credit the Roughriders for causing some of the mistakes and, of course, taking advantage of them. As well as the Panthers have performed so far this season, it’s easy to forget they are still young and still learning. The ability to learn from their mistakes and not repeat them will go a long way in determining how far the Panthers can go this season. They’ll play talented teams like Pima down the road and the experience of Friday’s game could prove to be beneficial. “Pima is easily the second best team in the state, right behind Bagdad,” Palmer explained. “We learned a lot about our team in this loss. We have the ability to compete with the best teams in the state, but we need to be more disciplined and consistent with our execution.” “We will learn from our mistakes and move forward,” he added. It doesn’t get any easier for the Panthers this week with the Copper Helmet Trophy on the line versus eighth-ranked Ray. There is added importance in this year’s game with both teams ranked in the top 10. The winner of the game not only gets to take home the Copper Helmet, but it will also have a leg up in the power points rankings when they are released by the AIA in October. Power Points Rankings are used by the AIA to determine playoff teams and seedings for the State Playoffs. Friday’s game is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.

The Lady Panthers volleyball team is making it look easy in the early season. They have swept all three matches they have played so far, going 3 – 0 to start the season. Superior defeated Duncan and Globe last Wednesday and Thursday, respectively. They played Joseph City last Friday but results were not available at press time. Junior Gabby Salcido was named Player of the Game in the victory over Duncan. She recorded 13 service points, including three aces. She also led the team with four kills. Pinky Thomas recorded two blocks and Hunter Flanagan had seven digs to lead the Panthers. Janessa Perez, Cierra Navarrette, and Salcido were next with five digs each. The Panthers next scheduled match is at Ray on September 25 at 5:00 p.m.

    Lady Panthers remain

    undefeated

    By Andrew LuberdaSuperior Sun

After going winless last season and losing the first two games to start this season, the Jr. Panthers finally tasted victory last Tuesday, beating Hayden, 14 – 8. “We kept shooting ourselves in the foot on offense, but our defense made up for it,” Jr. Panthers’ head coach Manuel Ortega said after the game. The Jr. Panthers scored for the first time in the second quarter when Steven Ybarra hooked up with Sammy Lopez on a 50-yard touchdown pass and reception. Ybarra completed the 2-point PAT on a pass to Jesus Castellanos. Ybarra and Castellanos connected again in the third quarter when Ybarra’s pass was tipped and Castellanos, staying focused, hauled it in for the touchdown. The Jr. Panthers defense was aggressive in the game, forcing two fumbles – one by Ybarra and the other by Benji Hernandez. Hayden scored a meaningless touchdown with twenty seconds left in the game to make the final score, 14 – 8. Ortega credited the defense for its hard hitting after the game. Acts 7:22 says, “Moses was educated in all the wisdom of the Egyptians and was powerful in speech and action.” Yet, in Exodus 4:10 Moses tells the Lord, “I have never been eloquent. I am slow of speech and tongue.” Sometimes, in the midst of God’s bless-ings, we just don’t grasp or understand what is really hap-pening. At times, we are so used to living the blessed life, that we no longer see what He is doing in our lives. We tend to take it all for granted. Moses denied his top of the line education. With it came great responsibility. In Exodus 4, he tries to talk God out of the call on his life. He made excuses, but God showed him the answer to each one. Thank the Lord for all the good things in your life; your family, marriage, relationships, job, hobbies, etc. When God says He loves you, don’t disagree with Him. Don’t ignore His love. Moses made excuses for God’s blessings. Don’t do that. Give God the glory for all that He has done for you. Take a step back, and view your life from a distance. Realize how wonderful the Lord has been to you and just how wonderful your life really is. Tell Him how thankful you are from deep within your heart. Let your thanks be real and meaningful.

The Pinal County Economic Development Program really needs your help. Residents of the Copper Corridor are getting their turn to take part in the Pinal County Workforce Assessment Survey. They are especially interested in hearing from Superior residents. The Pinal County Economic Development Program (EDP) has announced that the survey went online on Aug. 20 and invites all citizens in the area that includes Superior, Kearny, Winkelman, Dudleyville, San Manuel, Oracle and SaddleBrooke to participate. By answering the questions and telling Pinal County what jobs skills they possess, the county can better promote businesses to relocate here and create new jobs within a shorter commuting distance, said Tim Kanavel, EDP manager. Drafted and conducted by San Tan Valley-based Strategic Research Initiatives (SRI) LLC under contract with EPD, the survey has already been successfully conducted among residents in the county’s northwest pocket encompassing San Tan Valley, Apache Junction and Gold Valley. According to Tim Grainey, SRI member manager, questions asked on the survey include the level of education reached, if residents are homeowners or renters, why they moved to their current community, what they like and dislike about the community, and what their job ambitions are. Although EDP planned to conduct the Workforce Assessment Survey in five steps, each targeting a segment of the county in successive six-week periods, it decided to first assess the survey and its results to see if it was getting the data it wanted. In the period from late May to early August, EDP and SRI determined that the survey was providing the desired results and was easy for participants to complete. The survey thus wouldn’t be changed for the other four county areas. But to make up for lost time and complete surveying all county residents before Christmas, the Copper Corridor segment and the Central Pinal segment covering Florence, Coolidge, Eloy and Arizona City would be conducted at the same time. In mid-October, the two remaining segments

Residents reminded to participate in Pinal County Workforce Assessment Survey

for the areas around Casa Grande and Maricopa will finally be invited to visit the survey’s website, Kanavel said. “We can keep the Copper Corridor and Central Pinal survey results separate by sorting by zip codes,” Kanavel explained. “We already did that for the Northwest Pinal segment when we weeded out respondents from Queen Creek, which is mostly located in Maricopa County.” The reason behind the survey is rather basic, he added. “When EDP reaches out to businesses that could potentially relocate or set up shop in Pinal County, one of the first questions they ask is, ‘How is your workforce? Do you have people with the skills we will need ready to recruit and hire?’” Kanavel said.“With the survey, we have those statistics ready to share,” he concluded. Once EDP knows what job skills are possessed by residents in specific areas of the county, it can target specific types of businesses to that area. Residents of the Copper Corridor can take the Workforce Assessment Survey by going online to: http://bit.ly/1qYGIYZ.

The survey also is available in Spanish at: http://bit.ly/1s4PEzL. According to Grainey, the survey can be completed in under 15 minutes. Because the growth in parts of Pinal County has been so dynamic since 2002, EDP plans to conduct additional Workforce Assessment Surveys are regular intervals in the future; perhaps as early as 2017, Kanavel said.

Superior - When children play with blocks they are, through fun, learning how to mea-sure spatial relations, plan, build, classify and sort. Ifi other children are also involved they are learning social skills, and, when they put them away, they are learning self-care, organization and good citizenship. Play is truly the work of children and Head Start focuses on learning through play. Through it, they are given the opportunity to gain knowledge and experience the world around them, without tedium or other negative factors that can put a person off of performing tasks. Tell a child to clean their room, as a negative and they will learn to hate it. Make it a game and the reward is in the activity, as well as the result of having done it. Teacher Teresita Martinez Olmos shared a story with her students, turning an accident into a playful learning experience. She shared, “ As I opened the door of my vehicle as I prepared to drive to work this morning I heard a “thump.” When I stepped out of my vehicle I found a bird’s nest sitting on top of the roof of my vehicle! It apparent-ly fell from the carport eaves. I immediately decided to take it to school for show n tell and to display in the science/discovery area of the Head Start classroom. The experience was amazing! The children were enthusiastic

about “how I got the bird’s nest.” During a family style breakfast, Ms. Olmos retold the story to the children, sparking lively conversation. Questions asked were, “Teacher, did the nest sound like thunder when it hit the car?’ Another child asked “Did the bird fall out of it? “ Other children asked if it was like snow, while others com-mented why the nest had an orange string on it. The children glanced down at their shoes to name the color of shoelaces they were all wearing. One child adamantly commented that “The nest didn’t have any eggs in it because the bird has to fly.” Said Teresita, “Children asked if I was going to take the nest back to the bird. Throughout the day they pondered if the bird was “looking for it, and if the bird(s) were going to have to make another one.” One child went to the block area and decided to build a “bird house.” He began to organize wooden blocks. Another child de-cided to write a friendship letter to the bird to tell “the bird” the nest was at school.” Ms. Olmos said “When children exited the classroom at the end of the day, a few children walked near my car to see where the nest had hit. One child ran back to the classroom to tell me that my car had a scratch on it.”
