Stanley Francis Johnsen, loving and beloved son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, died September 3, 2014, after a long illness.

Stanley was born on May 3, 1924, to Peder Johnsen and Ruth Boyer in Bonne Terre, Missouri. Stanley enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1942, during his freshman year at the Missouri School of Mines & Metallurgy (now known as the Missouri University of Science & Technology). His mathematical mind made him an outstanding B-17 navigator. He earned the Distinguished Flying Cross for

Stanley Francis Johnsenhis service in the European Theater; he flew 33 combat missions, including flights over the invasion coast on D-Day.

When the war ended, Stanley returned to college and eventually won the heart of Lisle Jean Forrester, a high school girl who happened to be the daughter of one of Stanley’s toughest professors. Stanley and Lisle were married in 1950, after which Stanley embarked on a career as a professional mining engineer. They lived in Chicago; Marion, Illinois; Wallace, Idaho; and Fort Smith, Arkansas before eventually settling in Ray, Arizona, in 1958. There Stanley took a position as drilling and blasting foreman at Kennecott Copper Corporation’s Ray Mine.

Stanley, Lisle and their five children were among the hundreds of residents of Ray who later moved several miles down the highway to Kearny as the mine expanded.

Stanley worked in various other engineering and supervisory positions at the mine through the rest of his career, eventually rising to the post of mine operations superintendent. After retiring from Kennecott, Lisle and Stanley moved to Scottsdale in 1998, where they were season-ticket holders during the Diamondbacks’ inaugural season and volunteered at St. Maria Goretti Catholic Church. Stanley loved his family, copper, the Arizona heat, a good joke, a rousing song, and going hunting with his buddies and his sons.

Stanley and Lisle’s five children survive them: Diane Johnsen (Roger Brodman), Barbara Nabours (Gerald Nabours), Don Johnsen (Cindy Currence), Mary Loroña (Samuel Loroña), and Stanley Johnsen. He also leaves 12 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

A private funeral Mass will be celebrated at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church. Interment will follow at St. Francis Catholic Cemetery, where Stanley will be buried with Lisle, his devoted wife of 64 years, who passed three weeks before him.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E. Flower Street, Phoenix 85014.

Luz Kame was born in Hayden on July 5, 1923 to her father Secundino and Concepcion (Chonita) Quesada. She passed away Sept. 2, 2014. She is preceded in death by her parents, brother Secundino who passed on Sept. 8, 2001 and her daughter Mary Elizabeth who passed on Jan. 16, 1979. Luz was raised in Hayden most of her life but lived in Mesa and Copper Creek during the depression. She was educated in the Hayden High School District and in Mesa. Luz married Jacobo G. Kame and they were married for 73 years, and had five children: Jaime (Catalina), Mary Elizabeth (Abran), Jacob (Danira), Roxane (Tudy), Joe Michael (Andrea) and their extended family has been blessed with five generations: 14 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren and it is fair to say Jacobo and Luz treasured our family as being their

greatest accomplishment. During World War II, Luz, Jacobo and eldest son, Jaime were summoned and interned in the U.S. Internment Camp in Poston, Arizona on the Colorado River near Lake Havasu. Luz petitioned for and managed to secure an early release directly from Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt. Luz worked in the Hayden Post Office for 22 years and was also active in working local voting polls for many years. Luz also worked for several years for the local optometrist Dr. Robert S. Lamborn. She also served as a Representative/Recorder to the Department of Vital Records & Statistics which included recording deaths & live births in the greater Hayden area. Luz also enjoyed volunteering at

the church and was a member of the St. Joseph’s Rosary Ladies club. All of our family will miss her dearly but we look forward to meeting her again in the glory of the house of our Lord. Services took place Friday, Sept. 5, 2014 at St. Joseph Parish in Hayden Arizona. Visitation; 8:30 a.m. - 9:30 a.m., Rosary

Arizona Health Care Association recently announced that Donna Jenkins was awarded the honor of being named CNA of the year for the State of Arizona, “She is my treasure of a person to work with, she is my rock of an employee to have on staff, she is the one that I always know I can turn to when I need something above and beyond done, and she has earned a place in my heart as being one of the finest, most compassionate CNA’s that I have ever had the pleasure of working with,” said Paula Mitchell, Nursing Home Administrator at Copper Mountain Inn, Globe, Ariz. Every so often you will find a person that chooses to make a profession, a career, and a way of life by caring for others. They do this selflessly and they do this with their entire heart and soul, giving to others and caring for others in the way they would want to be treated themselves. Those are the ones that deserve to be honored as Certified Nursing Assistant of the Year. I have had the pleasure of working with this very person for the past seven years in my facility but she has been certified and has proudly held the position of Certified Nurse Assistant for over 20 years. Donna is not the person that shows up at work because it is her assigned day, only to give good care when needed, and treat people kindly. She is the one in a million CNA that truly puts her heart and soul into her work. She is here at work early, she is willing to stay late, she signs up for shifts on her days off if needed to make sure that residents get the type of care that they deserve and need. She goes above and beyond giving the required care that a CNA gives, Donna truly becomes family with the residents that she cares for. Donna loves to pamper her residents, she came to administration with the idea of creating spa like bathing. She took on the shower times, and she truly does give residents

a “spa” like bath, by spending the extra time to clip nails, and really fix hair pretty, applying some makeup and spritzes of perfume. All the little things that we ladies love, but unfortunately in a fast pace environment of a CNA, they do not always have time to deliver. She turned a shower time that residents dreaded into a time that they now are asking her when they get to go and bathe. These are just a couple of examples of ways that Donna has helped to improve the care given at our facility. She can always be found doing practical jokes with the residents that like to pull pranks, and laugh and enjoy life, she joins in on activities and is the object of much laughter when fun things are being done. She proudly tells everyone that she completed preceptor training and that she chose to be a CNA. She has suffered much personal tragedy in the past few years with the death of her husband, and yet she was still at work with a smile on her face and stated to me that she would rather be here with her family than to be at home crying over her loss. Donna is truly one in a million and I am blessed have her and truly feel that no one deserved the title of Certified Nursing Assistant of the Year more than Donna.

The Jr. Bearcats were outplayed in almost every facet of the game last week in a 42 –

0 loss at Mountain Vista in Oracle. “We did not hit, we did not block, and we did not execute any of our plays well at all,” Jr. Bearcats’ head coach Frank Lechuga told the Copper Basin News.

“(Mountain Vista) played a very aggressive style of defense that we just weren’t ready for.” Lechuga said the team immediately returned to the practice field last Thursday

and focused on practicing the fundamen-tals of football – blocking and tackling. He expects his players to show up with a “new attitude” for Tuesday’s game against San Carlos.

Lobos roughed up by RoughridersBy Andrew Luberda

Copper Basin News

The second-ranked Pima Roughriders ruined the ninth-ranked Lobos’ home opener last Friday, cruising to a 60 – 20 victory.

Hayden, who defeated San Pasqual Valley by a lopsided margin two weeks ago, had no answer for the powerful Roughriders. The Lobos fell behind 40 – 0 in the first quarter before getting on the scoreboard in the second quarter. They trailed at halftime, 54 – 6. Pima added a touchdown in the third quarter before

the Lobos closed out the game with 14 points in the final quarter. The Lobos travel to Ft. Thomas this Friday to take on an Apaches team coming off back-to-back road losses against Gilbert Christian and Superior. The game is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.

The Copper Community Action Board (CCAB) is a non-profit organization that was founded by a few members of the community that volunteer to clean up, promote and build up the Copper Basin communities. The group is working toward the future prosperity and pride of the Hayden/Winkelman, Kearny and Dudleyville communities. Some of the members have grown up in these communities, moved away and then moved back. They enjoyed living in the small communities and want to help the older generations and the youth that are here. CCAB tries to work with local business owners, building owners and residents in cleaning up the local communities. CCAB has hopes and dreams of attracting new businesses, creating long-term jobs and bringing back the pride in our communities. Some of CCAB’s past projects have been: breakfast on the historical Winkelman Luten Arch Bridge, built in 1916, and is a historical marker! It is a bridge between Gila and Pinal counties. Breakfast on the bridge was provided by Town of Winkelman and CCAB; cleaning up streets in the town’s of Hayden and Dudleyville; donation of a cooler Nora Arbizo; $100 scholarship’s were given last year to a Ray Senior and a Hayden Senior they were based solely on community service; donation to the Hayden students field trip to Washington DC; community concerts; raffles for different items and even for cash; pool tournament at Los Hermanos in Superior; ice cream social in Kearny and painting residential homes and area’s around the communities. CCAB plans to continue working on improving the communities with trash pick-up days, painting area’s that need improvements and helping the residents of the communities in any way they can. Upcoming events are painting the rails on San Pedro Sept. 20; participating in the Winkelman 100 year celebration on Oct. 11 at the Winkelman Flats; community concert at Ray School Auditorium (singers, dancers, comedians, all entertainers) Nov. 15. Our local communities are fortunate to have a group like CCAB to be so selfless and giving. The CCAB members volunteer their time and efforts to help keep our communities clean and to provide local entertainment. If you would like to volunteer, donate or help CCAB in another way the email address is: [email protected] or visit them on Facebook at Copper Community Action Board. The website is http://coppercommunityactionboard.webs.com/ in which you can fill out a form for “request for assistance” if you or someone in our community needs assistance. What does CCAB mean to its volunteers? Some of the CCAB members took a little time out of their busy schedules to explain what CCAB is about and what they hope to accomplish. It was a pleasure to spend

time with Martina Burnham, Leysa Rought and Gloria Ruiz. Each of these ladies grew up in the Hayden and Dudleyville areas, then moved away and returned. They have great passion for the local communities and truly want this area to grow and have more to offer residents and tourists. When did you first become interested in public service in the community? Leysa Rought said, “I grew up in Winkelman and it was a nice town. When I moved back I started my own business, I like it here and people were putting it down, so I thought what can we do to make it better? After about two weeks of returning home, I realized the town was run down and I want to help make it better. Through Martina I became involved in CCAB.”What is your proudest achievement thus far? Leysa Rought replied, “finding the career that was right for me, starting my own business and bringing a needed service to the community.”Gloria Ruiz said, “provide services to the community and the gratitude the people have towards the events and activities we at CCAB do. It’s nice to know that we do make a difference. One of our projects cleaning up Valentine Road we had over 25 trash bags filled, they were the 55 gallon bags too. People were honking, waiving and

some people even stopped to help us out.” Martina Burnam said, “being proud of who I am and trying to show others they can be prideful in a small town as well. If you move away and return, as I have, you realize there are many opportunities right here.”What additional improvements to the Copper Basin do you strive to achieve? Leysa Rought said, “I would really like to see the area cleaned up.” Gloria Ruiz said, “I would like to knock down the burnt homes in Hayden, they are an eye sore and it would be so nice not

to have the burnt homes around. I would like to see Hayden like an artsy colony, where people would come to see on the weekends or vacations, something similar to Jerome, Bisbee, etc. I continue and will continue to do my part to help Hayden improve.” Martina Burnam said, “We know our elderly get left behind and we would like that to change, we

would like to improve the schools, improve jobs, exhibit the opportunities for small towns to others including the youth. For the competitiveness to be shown in schools, but during other times enjoy your neighbors and your neighbor communities. Don’t just stay in your town, the towns close by may have other activities and opportunities to participate in as well.”

Who are your personal heroes? Leysa Rought said, “My granny, she taught me to do for others and she was always positive, encouraging and taught me to be family oriented.” Martina Burnam said, “I guess it is a toss for me, I never got to meet my grandfather on father’s side but he was the Town of Hayden’s Town Magistrate, he was involved in getting

the pool and the library here, in fact, the library was started in him home. I wish I could of met him but from the stories I have heard I would like to emulate him. The other person is my nana, Jaquita Morales, she was a spit-fire, she would fix things around the house, she took care of the children and she was very neighborly. She inspired me to have pride in my community.”

On behalf of the Cruz family, we would like to

express our sincere gratitude to all who were there in our

time of bereavement.

To all who were there for our beloved mother

throughout the years.

To all the people who called expressing their

condolences, who sent sympathy cards, to all

who sent food, flowers and attended her funeral services.

A special thanks to Father Robert A. Rodriquez,

who has been very busy traveling between Safford and Hayden performing

services for the family, also Marvin Rios’s choir who

sang at the Rosary and Mass at a very short notice. To the

bereavement crew who did a wonderful job of serving a

very large crowd.

Thank you everyone,

SAFETYBy John Hernandez

Copper Area News

The nation’s federal and state land manage-ment agencies and local fire departments have joined together to empower homeowners with knowledge and tools to protect their homes through the National Firewise Communities Program. Firewise Communities is designed to encourage and educate communities on develop-ing local solutions for wildfire safety. The plan involves firefighters, homeowners, community leaders, planners developers, and others coming together to coordinate efforts to design, build, and maintain homes and properties so they are compatible with nature as wildland fires are a natural process. Aravaipa Canyon has now become a Firewise Community. The idea started with Raimie Manch, vice president of the Aravaipa Property Owners Association and now Aravaipa Canyon Firewise Director. She contacted all of her neigh-bors and found that they were interested in Fire-wise. The Aravaipa Property Owners Association contacted Chris Jones, Agriculture and Natural Resource agent for the Gila County Cooperative Extension in Globe in June 2013. “Chris pointed me in the right directions, telling me what I needed to know,” said Manch. He came out to

Aravaipa Canyon and held an informational meeting with interested residents of the canyon. Jones explained the Firewise program to those in attendance. “The primary goal for Firewise landscaping is fuel reduction, limiting the level of flammable vegetation and materials sur-rounding the home and increasing the moisture content of the remaining vegetation,” said Jones. At the spring homeowners meeting in 2014, Faith Berry, Firewise Region I facilitator and Carrie Dennett, Arizona State Firewise liaison provided information on how to become a Fire-wise community and answered questions. The Aravaipa Canyon East area is now part of the Pinal Rural Fire Rescue and Medical District. A water map has been developed displaying lo-cations of water sources that can be accessed by firefighting helicopters. Staging areas and evacu-ation routes have also been proposed. The maps have been given to fire chiefs of the surrounding communities of Dudleyville, Mammoth, Kearny, Hayden and San Manuel. John Stanford, fire chief of the San Manuel Fire Department helped her set up the staging and evacuation sites. They are also collaborating with the Dudleyville Fire Department. Manch says that, “The Aravaipa Community is looking forward to working with the Oracle Firewise Community to promote fire prevention.”
