Welcome to COPPERSTATE 2009

The COPPERSTATE Staff would like to welcome old and new friends alike to the 37th annual COPPERSTATE Fly-In. This is our 5th year hosting the COPPERSTATE Fly-In at the Casa Grande Municipal Airport. The City of Casa Grande and the Airport Staff have been great to work with in making this a successful event and we look forward to Casa Grande being home to COPPERSTATE for many years to come.

We say that COPPERSTATE is the 4th largest fl y-in in the U.S.A. But the thing that I am most proud of is that COPPERSTATE is the largest all volunteer aviation event anywhere in the nation. Period. Everyone in the COPPERSTATE organization is a volunteer and everyone pays his or her own expenses to be able to work at COPPERSTATE. From the nice lady who gave you a free bottle of water to the Chairman of the Board of Directors… all volunteers. Hundreds of people donate hours, weeks and months of their time all year long just for their love of aviation. As you travel about the COPPERSTATE campus take a moment to say THANK YOU to a COPPERSTATE volunteer. Without them there would be no COPPERSTATE.

I invite you to join us on Saturday evening at the Awards Banquet. Tickets are available at Aircraft Registration located in the Terminal Building. In addition to the presentation of awards you will enjoy a great meal and the camaraderie of fellow pilots and lovers of aviation.

We sincerely hope that you enjoy your visit to COPPERSTATE and the City of Casa Grande. Be sure to put us on your calendar for next year (October 21-23, 2010)!

Greetings to my fellow aviators and visitors to our community airport.

As the Manager of the Casa Grande Municipal Airport, I am once again pleased and excited that Copperstate continues to choose our community airport for its annual fl y-in. Copperstate is a great opportunity for participants to show-case their aircraft and meet with many old friends as well as make many new friends. Copperstate allows the public to join all of us in a celebration of General Aviation while meeting pilots, aircraft builders and many others as they learn about aviation in a friendly and fun atmosphere. In these times of political mis-representation and the general economic downturn, all of us will experience and learn how important General Aviation is to our community. We will be able to meet and visit with folks who represent a wide spectrum of the General Aviation community. Medical Evacuation, Powered Parachutes, Historic War Birds, the Civil Air Patrol and many others will be here for your enjoyment and opportunity to learn more about General Aviation. As usual, we have worked closely with the Copperstate staff to make sure this year’s event is as safe and effi cient as possible. There are a few well-thought out changes that we hope will make our visiting pilots experience much better. For example, we are instituting an improved aircraft fueling procedure. Please read your Copperstate aircraft material carefully and follow the instructions provided by the Copperstate staff. If you do, I believe you will fi nd an improved aircraft fueling process. We continue to receive exceptional support from the Federal Aviation Administration throughout the planning process and have developed effi cient air traffi c control procedures for the airport during Copperstate. Take the time to watch our improved Noise Abatement procedure on our terminal television, and on the Copperstate and City of Casa Grande websites. Please help ensure that our neighbors continue to support our community airport by strictly adhering to our noise abatement procedures whenever the temporary control tower is not operational. With your cooperation and adherence to the Copperstate safety and airport procedures, this year’s Fly-in will be safe and everyone will arrive home safely after having a great time.

Once again, many Copperstate volunteers have worked very hard to make sure Copperstate is one of the Premier Fly-Ins in the country. I trust our low fuel prices and dedicated staff will continue to provide you with an aviation experience that you will not forget and strengthens your desire to attend next year.

I will be at the airport every day before, during and after Copperstate. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any problems or questions. If I cannot solve your problem or answer your question, I will fi nd someone who can. You can usually fi nd me working as a volunteer on the ramp, driving the airport golf cart or inside the terminal. No matter where I am, any airport staff member will be able to contact me if you need assistance.

On behalf of the airport and city staff, who have done so much to help make Copperstate a success, please accept my heartfelt thank-you for attending our wonderful Fly-In. Be sure to enjoy our facilities and the many exciting aviation oriented activities. The airport staff and I wish you a safe and enjoyable Fly-In.

Sincerely,

Steven R. HullandAirport Manager

Showcase Fly-ByJoin us in the COPPERSTATE aircraft

“Showcase” fly-by pattern.Fly-in visitors are encouraged to show

their aircraft to the COPPERSTATE audience the way they’re meant to be seen — in flight! You can do so by participating in the COPPERSTATE Showcase fly-by pattern. Aircraft in the Showcase fly a racetrack traffic pattern designed to give the crowd a good view of the aircraft, while at the same time not impeding other aircraft operations on the airport. You can have the Showcase pattern all to yourself, or (upon request) share it with up to three other aircraft of similar performance characteristics. Fly-by periods last up to 15 minutes — and information about your plane (and you!) can be announced from the announcer’s platform during your flight. This invitation is extended not only to vendors and demo pilots but to anyone who wants to show off the performance of their airplane.

Only one catch...all participating pilots must first attend a Showcase pattern briefing (a single briefing is good for the duration of the event), where you will be assigned a “Showcase” callsign number and scheduled into the available time slot of your choice. To get your briefing, simply flag down the “Showcase Briefing” golf cart — or call our Showcase briefer (480-248-5259) and he’ll come to you.

If Valle Airport’s historic Ford Tri-Motor N414H could speak, here are a few of the stories she could tell of her incredible history:

• From 1929 to 1931, she was Ford Motor Company’s factory demonstrator as a seaplane on the Detroit River.

• Sold to Pan Am in 1931, she flew from Miami to Central America on scheduled routes.

• Sold to Cia Mexicana de Aviacion in 1935. Sold to Cia Guatemalteca de Aviacion in

Guatemala in 1941 and operated until 1950.• Recovered by Robert Waltermire in

1950 and returned to the US to fight the grasshopper plague.

• Between 1956 and 1959 had a series of owners before finally falling into dereliction and disrepair in Florida.

• Purchased in 1959 by John and Katherine Louck of Monmouth, Ill. Rebuilt and used for passenger rides. Leased to TWA in 1963.

• Sold to American Airlines in 1965. Was present at the New York City World’s Fair.

• Bought by Chuck LeMaster in the early 1970’s and sold in 1977 to John Seibold, former co-owner of Grand Canyon Airlines and founder of the modern Scenic Airlines.

• In 2003 N414H participated at the Ford Motor Company’s Centennial Anniversary Celebration in Dearborn, Mich. It joined EAA’s Ford Tri-Motor in a special event where the Ford Tri-Motors landed at the original Ford Airport and what was the first paved runway in the world (now the Ford Dearborn Proving Grounds). A few weeks later N414H also participated at Oshkosh AirVenture 2003 flying in a ‘Tri-Motor Reunion’ with EAA’s Tri-Motor, a Bushmaster 2000, a Stinson Tri-Motor and a JU-52. Participated in the recreation of the 1932 National Air Tour.

• Currently N414H can be viewed at the Valle Airport (40G), which is located between Williams and Grand Canyon, Arizona, on Hwy 64.

Ascent Aviation Group, distributor of Phillips 66 aviation fuels, and the City of Casa Grande are proud to support the appearance of this historic Ford Tri-Motor at the 2009 COPPERSTATE Fly-In.

This year’s special events will include the Fuelventure 400 on October 24. This event is a competition to determine the most fuel efficient aircraft. It is known that competition improves the breed and the intention of the Fuelventure 400 is to spawn competition for fuel efficiency improvements in airplanes. This could eventually benefit all of general aviation. Better fuel efficiency for general aviation is just good for everybody!

The competition is simple: Each aircraft

and its passengers are weighed and they then fly a 400-mile triangular course. Upon completion of the course, the aircraft and passengers are again weighed and the difference in weight is fuel burned. Calculations are performed and two types of awards are given.

One set of awards are based on the CAFE Foundation formula which gives credit for cruise speed and passenger payload. The other set of awards are just pure MPG. And unlike a top speed race, this

competition is easy on the airplane and just as much fun!

This year there will be separate classes for canard type and RV airplanes. More than $1,500 in prize money will be given to the top finishers. This is the second annual Fuelventure 400 at COPPERSTATE. There is no entry fee, but liability coverage is required. The event is open to all aircraft — join in the fun!

For more information: fuelventure.org and copperstate.org.

Want to build an airplane yourself? Experimental really means “Amateur Built” for our organization. Remember the words of Tim Allen, “If you didn’t build it yourself, it’s not really yours.”

Are you are worried that your skills are not up to snuff? Do you think that you have to be a professional mechanic to build an aircraft? Well, if you’re worried about it, then you qualify. It’s the guys who don’t worry about it that can get into trouble. If you have a critical attitude toward weight and quality, then you are qualified and trainable.

Each Workshop is led by an experienced leader in the craft. The Workshops and the leaders are an excellent way to get started learning a new skill. You’ll be introduced to the materials, the knowledge base and the reference materials that you’ll need to continue your journey of self education.

Not every workshop has the same structure. Each workshop leader is authorized to schedule and run the workshop as they see fit. So get there early, talk to the leader, and make your own plan for the weekend. You may also contact the leaders via email prior to the event. The posted workshop schedule is only part of the time available to discuss things with the leaders. You’ll be able to get plenty of one-on-one time with each leader in between the scheduled meetings.

Please give the Workshop leaders your

feedback, and also forward your comments to the Copperstate Workshop Chairman, Dave Wilcox.

This year’s workshops are led by:

Composites: Gary HertzlerBuilder of the VariEze composite aircraft

that currently holds the CAFE closed course and straight line efficiency awards for weight class, Gary manufactures high performance propellers for high speed Amateur Built aircraft. You’ll learn more than composite lay-up techniques with Gary. He’ll teach you that efficiency is a religion. Just two sessions for composites, so plan ahead. [email protected].

Composites: Terry SchubertTerry Schubert grew up with model

airplanes and began flying at 15. He rebuilt several certified airplanes but found their performance lacking. He built a Long-EZ, which made its first flight in 1986. As 20-year editor/publisher of the international canard type Central States Association newsletter, he has hosted many efficiency mods on his Long-EZ, accumulated a World altitude record and flown it over 3,500 hours.

Sheet Metal: Doug CombsDoug has restored and repaired Luscombe

sheet metal aircraft for 38 years. He is well

known for his efforts in the preservation of Luscombe aircraft.

Doug has trained many sheet metal mechanics and organized the work of the Luscombe Endowment and its predecessor Luscombe Foundation since 1989. Doug will demonstrate and coach participants in basic sheet metal tools, layout, forming, and riveting techniques. Advance scheduling for this seminar is recommended at 602-790-7240 or [email protected].

Weight & Balance: Rick ReulandRick is an aerospace engineer who has

spent his career with engine installations. He constructed an excellent LongEze. Rick will get his participants hands-on experience calculating weight and balance.

There’s more to it than adding three weights together. Rick will be able to explain moments and ballast like only an engineer can and you’ll go away confident that you can do it yourself. Rick is easy to understand. [email protected].

Fabric: Murle WilliamsMurle is the Phoenix distributor of

Polyfiber products. Murle built an EAA Grand Champion Kitfox fabric aircraft. He has been teaching the fabric workshop at Copperstate ever since I can remember. [email protected].

Workshops will get you started
