    1. Hirakund Project- It has been built on the river Mahanadi in

    Orissa.

    2. Damodar Valley Project-This project is the joint venture of West

    Bengal and Jharkhand. It is on the river Damodar.3. Bhakhra Nangal Project-This project is the joint venture of

    Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan. It has been built on the river

    Satluj.

    4. Sardar Sarovar Dam-It is built on the river Narmada in Gujarat.

    5. Nagarjunsagar Project-This project has been constructed on the

    river Krishna in Andhra Pradesh.

    MAIN OBJECTIVE OF MULTIPURPOSE RIVER VALLEY PROJECT

    Several Projects have been undertaken in India toutilize the water of rivers efficiently.

    These projects involve the construction of dams,

    reservoirs and canals and serve a number of purposessimultaneously.

    Their main objective is the overall development andthus they are known as multi-purpose river valleyprojects.

    The main purpose of these projects are to providefacilities of irrigation, flood control and productionof hydroelectricity.

    DETAILS OF HIRAKUD DAM

    Hirakud dam is built across the Mahanadi river about15 km from Sambalpur in the state of Orissa in India.

    Its construction began in 1948 and opening at 1957.

    The dam is one of the world's longest Earthen Dam.

    Behind the dam extends a lake, Hirakud Reservoir, 55 kmlong.

    Hirakud Dam is the longest man-made dam in the world,about 16 mi (26 km) in length.

    It is one of the first major multipurpose river valley projectstarted after India's independence.

    The name of the dam is mostly mis-pronounced in NorthIndia as Hirakund which is actually Hirakud.

    DVC, a legacy to the people of India, emerged as a culminationof attem pts m ade over a whole century to control the wild anderratic Dam odar river.

    The river s pans over an area o f 25 ,00 0 k m 2 covering the

    states of Biha r (now Jhark han d) & West Bengal. The pro ject constructed dams and thermal power stat ions

    wh ich h elp in con t rollin g f lood a nd p rovid in g elect ricit yrespectively.

    Damodar Valley Project is the f irst m ult ipurpose r iver val leyproject of ind ependent India.

    This project ben efits two sta tes tha t are Bihar and West Bengal. I t is 692 metres long and 11.6 metres high barrage that was

    constructed across Dam odar River. This project is handled by Damodar Valley Corporation.

    DETAILS OF BHAKRA NANGAL DAM

    Bhakra-Nangal Project is a joint venture by the states ofPunjab, Rajasthan and Haryana.

    This project is considered as the major multi-purpose projectin India.

    The Bhakra-Nangal Project was started in the year 1948 andit was completed in 1968.

    The name of this project came from the two dams Bhakraand Sutlej River,

    Nangal Dam is at a distance of about 13 kilometres to thedownstream of Bhakra Dam and is of a height of 95 feet.

    This project also generates one million kilowatt of hydro-electricity.
