Introduction
Thank you for purchasing Arctic Rescue!
It takes a special kind of pilot to be a rescue pilot. Whilst sensible pilots avoid the worst of
the weather and certainly don’t go out of their way to perform difficult landings and
manoeuvres this is all part and parcel of the life of the rescue pilot.
Perhaps, the finest rescue pilots in the world are those who operate deep inside the Arctic,
pushing man and machine to the limits of endurance over some of the most hostile terrain on
Earth.
From searching for lost ships in poor weather, to dramatic landings on frozen tundra or
rescuing casualties from a ferocious fire it is all in a day’s work. Arctic Rescue challenges
you to complete 20 missions responding to a wide range of adrenalin pumping emergencies
that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Any rescue pilot will tell you that they never
quite know what emergency will face them or how events turn out when they respond to a
distress call. All they know, these are calls that must be answered regardless of the weather
conditions, terrain or operational difficulties. Once the SCRAMBLE SCRAMBLE message is
received over your radio, there is no turning back!

Introducing Your Aircraft
Arctic Rescue includes three aircraft carefully chosen to be the most appropriate for the
mission at hand. Each has its own callsign, RESCUE 1, RESCUE 2 and RESCUE 3
respectively.
RESCUE 1
This is the Augusta Westland EH101, otherwise known as the Merlin, callsign RESCUE 1.
Our helicopter is used both in civil and military applications and is one of the world's
foremost search and rescue aircraft. The aircraft is designed to operate in extreme weather
conditions and has specialist de-icing equipment as standard. The EH101 is typically
operated by a crew of three: a pilot, an observer, and a crewman/operator. All crew members
have individual access to management computers, with the aircraft fully configured with state
of the art electronic displays. We carry a wide variety of rescue equipment and can
accommodate 16 stretchers when responding to mass casualty incidents. We have a semi-
automatic cargo release and rescue hoist, so we are well equipped to deal with every type of
emergency.

Page 11
RESCUE 2 The second aircraft in our fleet is the iconic Cessna Grand Caravan. It is highly popular with
rescue agencies, being able to transport medical teams and casualties to and from incidents
with ease. The large cabin can accommodate up to 14 passengers and can be configured as a
mobile ambulance with both stretcher bays and equipment lockers. Its rugged nature and easy
handling make it a favourite for those flying in the far north.

Page 12
RESCUE 3 The third aircraft in our rescue fleet is the diminutive Maule M-7 260C. Don’t let the small
size of this aircraft deceive you, being one of the most versatile aircraft ever designed. Its
short take-off and landing capabilities ensure that this is an aircraft that can get in and out of
the smallest airstrips for casualty evacuation. Our version has retractable skis making the
Maule perfect for landings in the Arctic tundra. Its relatively high rate of climb and descent
allow the aircraft to navigate difficult mountain terrain with ease. In short, this is a go
anywhere, do anything aircraft that is ideally suited for the most demanding of rescue
missions!

Welcome To Alaska!
All of the flights within Arctic Rescue are flown within one of the most scenic locations in
the world, the US state of Alaska. Many of the missions operate well north of the Arctic Circle
in some of the most inhospitable terrain on the planet, far away from civilisation and roads. A
part of the world where aircraft are often the only way of accessing the rugged mountainous
hinterland. Our Arctic Rescue Service is based in Anchorage Alaska, at the international
airport, but often you will find yourself having to relocate far north, to the snowbound wastes
of the Polar Regions to respond to emergencies in the most unforgiving landscape known to
man!

Useful Airport Information
Most of the airports within Arctic Rescue are not equipped with navigational aids. Welcome
to the remote Arctic! This does mean that most landings will be purely visual where you need
to rely on your hand and eye coordination to perform a successful landing.
However, the exception to the rule is when returning to your base of operations at Anchorage.
The airport is one of the most modern in the world and is fully equipped with navigational
tools such as ILS and ATC facilities. The following data tables should prove useful when
returning to base.

The Aircraft And Weather
All of the flights are setup by default to use the aircraft included with this pack. You can just
jump in right away and fly any flight, knowing that you have a perfect choice of aircraft for
the task in hand.
However, should you wish to use a favourite aircraft of your own, simply check the “Enable
changes in selected mission” box on the missions selection screen. You can then use your
own aircraft from within each mission by utilising the Aircraft menu and selecting any
aircraft within your hangar. It is wise to always validate that the aircraft you choose is
suitable for both the flight duration and the length of runway of your chosen mission.
If you wish to make the challenges even more spectacular, you can adjust the weather to your
heart’s content utilising the same method as discussed above and changing the weather from
within the mission.
Flying The Flights
Each flight has been designed to be flown by following the waypoints that appear on screen.
Aim to fly through the green arrows of each waypoint to ensure that you make your target.
There is also a compass and arrow guiding you to your next waypoint or destination that can
be found on the top left of your screen. Below the compass is the name of your next waypoint
and the target altitude.
Please note, if you do not see the compass and waypoint arrows, ensure that they are switched
to ON in your Flight Simulator X: Steam Edition settings. By default, they can also be cycled
using the U key on the keyboard.
Starting Your Mission
Each mission, complete with a briefing can be found from within the Missions screen of
Flight Simulator X: Steam Edition. Change the category, using the drop down menu and
select “Arctic Rescue” to list each mission in the display window.

Page 17
Air Traffic Control
Arctic Rescue has been designed to be fully compatible with the air traffic control facilities
within Flight Simulator X: Steam Edition. The use of ATC is completely at your own
discretion based on your own preferred flying style and level of realism. For most flights you
should request a VFR (visual flight rules) clearance. Some flights in extreme weather will
require you to fly IFR (instrument flight rules) in low visibility conditions. These flights will
require you to request an IFR clearance should you wish to use ATC.
For your convenience, each flight from an airport to another airport has a pre-loaded VFR or
IFR flight plan that can be used with ATC and also as a guide within your GPS, which can be
accessed with the SHIFT-3 key command.
Flights that require you to search an area or reach an area not connected to an airport do not
have an associated flight plan, as would be the case in the real world. Here, you should
simply request VFR clearance in the direction of your first waypoint. For instance, if you are
departing to the north, simply request VFR clearance for a northerly departure.

Page 18
Starting Your Descent
In aviation, there is no set point at which aircraft will start their descent for an airport. When
you descend is based on a number of factors, including ATC requirements, weather, and
performance limitations of your aircraft.
However, there is a handy rule of thumb used by pilots that will help you decide when you
should be descending:-
Divide your altitude by 1000
Multiply this number by 3
This will give you the number of miles to start your descent to reach sea level. Modify
accordingly, based on the elevation of your arrival airport.
For example, we wish to reach sea level from 30,000ft. This yields 30x3, giving us a guide to
start our descent 90 miles from the airport.
To arrive at an airport 10,000ft above sea level from 30,000ft we must descend 20,000ft. This
yields 20x3, giving us a descent distance of 60 miles.
I usually give another 10 miles to this figure, for good measure, allowing plenty of time for
deceleration to landing speeds.
Choosing Your Runway
You will be guided to both your take-off and landing runway using the ATC facilities of
flight simulator. Ensure that you fully comply with all ATC taxi, take-off and landing
instructions to get the most enjoyment from Arctic Rescue. If you are choosing not to fly with
ATC, the choice of departure runway is yours.
Please note when flying VFR in to small uncontrolled airstrips, the choice of arrival runway
is at your own discretion unless otherwise advised during the mission. This is normal real
world procedure when flying in and out of small arctic airstrips that do not have ATC or a
control tower.

4:Baby Onboard! SKILL LEVEL:
INTERMEDIATE
RESCUE 3, we have been asked to attend Whittier Airport as quickly as possible to collect a
lady currently experiencing labour pains.
ESTIMATED TIME TO COMPLETE: 55 minutes
BRIEFING: Your task is to evacuate her from the airport and return with her to Anchorage.
An ambulance will be waiting in Anchorage to convey her to the maternity hospital.
The only road access to Whittier is through the Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel, however
it is currently closed due to heavy snows, so Whittier is only accessible by air.
HINTS AND TIPS: Ensure that you use the body of water around Whittier to aid in your
descent once you have cleared the nearby mountain peaks. Aim to land low and slow, due to
the very short runway! A careful landing is essential to avoid an overrun!

5:Beaver Lake Rescue! SKILL LEVEL:
BEGINNER
A pleasure boat has got in to trouble in Beaver Lake. Your job is to fly to the lake, locate the
vessel and rescue the casualty.
ESTIMATED TIME TO COMPLETE: 45 minutes
BRIEFING: Find your way to Beaver Lake and locate the boat. You should then be able to
find the waiting ambulance on the shoreline. Land close to the ambulance to transfer the
casualty before returning him to Anchorage for hospital treatment.
HINTS AND TIPS: A mission best suited for a helicopter, allowing you to land close to the
water’s edge. Be very careful landing on the shoreline to avoid both the water and any
difficult terrain. Locate a good landing spot close to the ambulance before you touch down.

6:Unalakleet Search SKILL LEVEL:
ADVANCED
We have to find a cargo vessel in distress off the Alaskan coast at Unalakleet. The weather is
dreadful so it will be a tough search!
ESTIMATED TIME TO COMPLETE: 1-2 hours
BRIEFING: The MV Silverman cargo carrier has put out a distress call. Unfortunately the
radio went dead before emergency services could ascertain her location. We are tasked to
find her, operating in a 10 mile grid around Unalakleet Airport. You should first fly to the
search start location on your compass and then start hunting for the Silverman. If you think
you have spotted the vessel, fly low over it for positive identification. Angel, your controller
will then alert the rescue ships to converge on the area.
HINTS AND TIPS Once you have reached the start waypoint it is advised that you hide the
mission compass and arrows. By default this is bound to the U key. You then have to search
the grid area for the cargo vessel. Use the GPS in the cockpit to ensure you stay within 10
miles of Unalakleet Airport. If you have difficulty, you can always “cheat” by re-enabling the
compass pointer with the U key and you will be guided directly to the MV Silverman.

7:Mine Fire! SKILL LEVEL:
ADVANCED
RESCUE 1, attend the Bucking Bronco Gold Mine. A major fire has broken out at the mine
and there are reports of trapped miners needing urgent assistance.
ESTIMATED TIME TO COMPLETE: 1 hour 10 minutes
BRIEFING: Make your way to the mine as quickly as possible, following the waypoint in
your HMD. When you arrive at the mine follow any instructions give to you. You may find
yourself with other tasks to complete!
HINTS AND TIPS: This mission involves a significant amount of helicopter flying, but you
are aided by good weather. You will be required to make a series of take-offs and landings
around a challenging mine fire so landing precision is imperative!

8:Off The Runway! SKILL LEVEL:
INTERMEDIATE
A pilot has ran off the end of the runway at Deshka Landing. You are tasked to retrieve him
for a medical examination.
ESTIMATED TIME TO COMPLETE: 35 minutes
BRIEFING: Make your way to the Deshka landing as quickly as possible to collect the
injured pilot from his plane crash. Once you have him aboard, return him to Anchorage for a
medical examination.
HINTS AND TIPS: This flight is a real test of flying in the winter. Heavy winds and icy
runways will impede your flying. Ensure that you approach Deshka landing low and slow,
leaving yourself plenty of stopping distance. Beware, the crashed aircraft is blocking the
extreme end of the runway! Approach and land from the opposite end to the crashed aircraft.

9:Chest Pains! SKILL LEVEL:
EXPERT
We have to fly to Tatitlek Airport to respond to reports of a patient with severe chest pains.
ESTIMATED TIME TO COMPLETE: 1 hour 30 minutes
BRIEFING: Fly to Tatitlek Airport and return with the patient to Anchorage. This 200 mile
round trip involves flying over some of the most scenic mountain terrain in the world.
However, beware the snowstorms you will encounter as you travel towards Tatitlek. Given
the weather, you may wish to file an IFR flight plan with ATC to be guided safely to your
destination. The flight plan has been pre-loaded in your GPS aboard the aircraft.
HINTS AND TIPS: You should aim to get as high as you can, as quickly as you can, to both
get above the weather and the mountain peaks. A cruising altitude of 11,000ft is preferred.
Climb as rapidly as possible immediately on departing Anchorage to ensure you have
sufficient clearance from the terrain. If you chose to fly VFR you will need to skirt around the
snow showers, ensuring that you always remain in visual contact with the ground.

10: USS Enterprise SKILL LEVEL:
EXPERT
You are taking part in a joint training mission with the US Navy. Your task is to land on the
aircraft carrier, USS Enterprise.
ESTIMATED TIME TO COMPLETE: 15 minutes
BRIEFING: Perhaps the most difficult mission of all. You must fly to meet the USS
Enterprise as she sails south of Anchorage towards Kenai. Once you locate the aircraft you
must perform a deck landing to complete the mission. The Enterprise will continue to steam
south as you perform your landing, making this landing on a moving deck the supreme
challenge of your helicopter flying skills!
HINTS AND TIPS: Take your time to line up your approach and make a steady descent
towards the aircraft carrier. Ideally, you should approach from astern the vessel and line
yourself up with the runway for a low speed rolling touchdown. Remember the Enterprise is
moving south at 10kts so factor this movement in to your approach to avoiding missing the
deck. As the deck approaches adjust your rate of descent and ease back on the speed, aiming
to touch down on the deck at less than 20kts. Make your way to the parking area highlighted
by the green arrow and come to a full stop to complete this extremely challenging mission.

11: Thunderstorm! SKILL LEVEL:
EXPERT
You are tasked to transport a group of medical personnel to Middleton Island where they will
join a vessel setting sail for a disaster zone in the Pacific.
ESTIMATED TIME TO COMPLETE: 1 hour 30 minutes
BRIEFING: An extremely challenging mission as there is severe thunderstorm activity
around both Anchorage and Middleton Island. For much of the flight you will be flying blind
through heavy storm clouds. However, taking the direct track to the island will avoid the
worst of the weather. You should expect to be flying in IFR conditions and you should file an
IFR flight plan accordingly with ATC. The route to Middleton Island is pre-loaded in your
GPS. On arrival at the island, request a visual approach to runway 19 and land on the runway
to complete the mission.
HINTS AND TIPS: You should be familiar with filing an IFR flight plan with the air traffic
control facilities within FSX:SE. As you approach Middleton Island, you should drop out of
the clouds just below 1500ft altitude, making it possible to fly a visual approach to runway
19. You may be offered a circling approach from runway 1, where the aircraft is flown in a
curve from a sighting of runway 1 to finally land on runway 19. Use the simulator map
function to line yourself up with final approach if in any doubt. You must land on runway 19
to complete the mission. As a guide, you should spot the vessel waiting for the medics out at
sea, just to your left.

12: Arctic Explorers! SKILL LEVEL:
INTERMEDIATE
Contact has been lost with a group of Arctic explorers, east of Barrow.
ESTIMATED TIME TO COMPLETE: 30 minutes
BRIEFING: Your task is to fly to the tundra camp of the arctic exploration team, east of
Barrow. Once you locate the camp you should aim to land as close as possible to the tents.
Once you are safely on the ground at the camp, your task is to establish the cause for the loss
of contact with the team. The mission ends once the issue has been resolved.
HINTS AND TIPS: There are regular and persistent snow flurries, so you should aim to fly
well below 1000ft to maintain clear visibility with the ground. Once you have spotted the
camp, you should aim to make a slow approach and landing on the treacherous tundra. The
aircraft is equipped with deployable skis to aid you in your task. Remember you are far north
of the Arctic Circle and in addition to the snow flurries, the tundra has frozen hard. Be aware
that this will affect your braking ability. The good news is that this is just the sort of mission
your Maule aircraft was designed for!

Page 32
13: Sheep Mountain SKILL LEVEL:
INTERMEDIATE
Deliver vital supplies to the small community at Sheep Mountain, after they have been cut off
by heavy snowfall.
ESTIMATED TIME TO COMPLETE: 45 minutes
BRIEFING: Fly deep in to the mountains, to deliver much needed supplies at Sheep
Mountain. A flight plan has been set up in your GPS, in addition to waypoint markers on
your head mounted display. You should aim to reach the community as quickly as possible.
The mission ends when you successfully arrive at the airstrip.
HINTS AND TIPS: This mission is challenging due to the requirement to fly through a
heavily mountainous region. You should aim to climb to at least 11,000ft to avoid the worst
of the terrain. However, you will have to descend in to the mountains to reach your
destination. You will need to keep your wits about you to navigate around the treacherous
peaks. A good tip is to follow the path of the valley leading to the airstrip, offering a safe path
through the mountains and a clear view of the runway.

14: Seward Trawler SKILL LEVEL:
ADVANCED
A fisherman has been taken sick on a deep sea trawler in Resurrection Bay. He needs urgent
transport to Seward.
ESTIMATED TIME TO COMPLETE: 45 minutes
BRIEFING: Fly from Seward and along Resurrection Bay until you find the trawler. You
should hover over the trawler at around 50ft of altitude to facilitate the winching of the
casualty in to the helicopter. Once he is safely aboard return him to Seward for urgent
medical treatment.
HINTS AND TIPS: This mission will put your helicopter piloting skills to the test. Ideally
you should arrive at the trawler at low speed and low altitude. The key to a successful
completion is keeping your speed down to avoid overshooting your target. Gently raise the
nose in to a hover from a low speed approach and all should be well. Use the collective to
ensure that your altitude remains stable. You may want to practise hovering in RESCUE 1,
before attempting this mission.

15: Carpentiers Strip SKILL LEVEL:
ADVANCED
You are tasked with taking urgent supplies to Carpentiers Strip.
ESTIMATED TIME TO COMPLETE: 15 minutes
BRIEFING: A short 15 minute flight across from Anchorage to Carpentiers Strip. The
mission concludes when you reach the parking area.
HINTS AND TIPS: The runway at Carpentiers Strip is very small and can be difficult to
spot from the air. It may make sense to overfly the airfield before landing to get your bearings
and orientation to the runway. The runway is aligned perpendicular to your route of flight on
an east-west axis. I recommend a landing on runway 09, landing to the east. Beware, there is
a steady crosswind blowing across the runway, but it should not cause you too much trouble
if you take care!

16: Doctor On Call! SKILL LEVEL:
BEGINNER
You are asked to transport a local doctor to Tatitna, so he can do house calls on his patients!
ESTIMATED TIME TO COMPLETE: 20 minutes
BRIEFING: You will be flying from Farewell to Tatitna. However, your co-pilot Jerry
suggests a deviation around the mountains, to follow a low lying valley direct to the
settlement. The mission ends as you land in Tatiana.
HINTS AND TIPS: You should follow the advice of Jerry and fly around the mountains
rather than in a direct line. A waypoint to the valley entrance has been set up for you to
follow. Track along the valley for an easy descent in to the airfield. However, you should be
aware that the runway is perpendicular to your path, requiring a 90 degree turn to final
approach. You may find it easier to fly wide of the airport and then turn to final approach to
give yourself ample turning space.

17: Lost Hiker SKILL LEVEL:
INTERMEDIATE
A hiker has reportedly collapsed north of Castle Mountain. Fly from the nearby airstrip,
locate and rescue the hiker and return him for medical treatment.
ESTIMATED TIME TO COMPLETE: 45 minutes
BRIEFING: Fly from Castle Mountain airstrip to the north to find the lost hiker in the
wilderness. He has been reported as collapsed from exhaustion so requires urgent casualty
evacuation back to the airstrip. You should follow the compass waypoint to find him in the
mountains.
HINTS AND TIPS: This mission is tougher than it looks, due to the extreme mountainous
terrain and a persistent crosswind. Take great care to avoid the peaks and if possible follow
valleys to get to your destination. Beware of that wind which threatens to blow you off
course. Once you find the hiker make a careful landing on the mountainside to recover him.
The mountain landscape is icy and uneven, so this is a real test of your skill as you
touchdown!

18: Dusk Dash! SKILL LEVEL:
INTERMEDIATE
We have been tasked to urgently transport a medical team to Whittier.
ESTIMATED TIME TO COMPLETE: 45 minutes
BRIEFING: Your task is to transport a medical team to Whittier. There is only one problem
to spoil the perfect flight plan! The team were delayed arriving in Anchorage and night is
starting to fall. The airport at Whittier is only certified for daylight operations. As such, we
only have 30 minutes to reach the airport and land before it shuts down for the night. The
medical team state that their patient needs immediate assistance, so you have no option but to
head out in to the sunset skies!
HINTS AND TIPS: Speed is of the essence, but don’t jeopardise flight safety. Push the little
Maule to its safe limits to reach Whittier on time. A good tip is to carefully manage your rate
of climb to avoid decaying too much speed. You should also make use of gravity in the
descent to gain some speed. Be brisk about aligning yourself for final approach at Whittier,
with a tight procedure turn over the bay and all should be well!

19: Coming Storm! SKILL LEVEL:
ADVANCED
Make your way to Bradley Lake as quickly as possible, racing to beat an incoming storm!
ESTIMATED TIME TO COMPLETE: 45 minutes
BRIEFING: You have been asked to transport a local doctor to Bradley Lake. However, a
storm is rushing to meet you. You should aim to beat the worst of the storm by arriving at the
lake as quickly as possible.
HINTS AND TIPS: An IFR flight plan has been created for your journey to Bradley Lake.
You may wish to file this flight plan with Air Traffic Control and follow their direction to
your destination due to the limited visibility. The choice is yours.

EXPERT
A dolphin has been reported washed up on the shoreline south of Anchorage. Your task is to
locate the dolphin on behalf of the local wildlife agency.
ESTIMATED TIME TO COMPLETE: 30-60 minutes
BRIEFING: Head south to the marker, which highlights the start of the search area. You
should restrict your search to 10 miles either direction of the marker in the hope of finding
the stranded dolphin.
HINTS AND TIPS: An extremely challenging mission as a dolphin appears very very small
from the air. You should remain at a low altitude of 100 feet or below throughout the mission
to have the best chance of spotting the stranded animal. Once you believe you have a sighting
you should aim to pass over the dolphin at low altitude, below 100 feet, to complete the
mission.
