Copyrights and readers - 1. Dutch Copyright Act (1/1)

A definition can be found on the SURF website as quoted below – see also link

below:

“Section 1 of the Copyright Act states that copyright is the exclusive right of

the “author” of a work of literature, science/scholarship, or art to publish it or

duplicate it. The Act sets no requirements as regards how copyright arises. A

work comes into being at the point when it is created.”

Copyrights and readers – 2. Policy – what (1/5)

The policy can be found via the CMB homepage:

Homepage CMB under “Help”

“support readers UMCG / RUG”

“Digital readers policy…”

Copyrights and readers – 2. Policy – what (2/5)

What is permitted:

1.Links to books or articles in the CMB collection in Nestor (e-

books or e-journals)

2.Make reference to printed books in the library (examples

follow)

Note: Do not directly copy text (short or long extracts), for

instance, a PDF or scanned text unless it is available under a

creative commons licence or obtained from an open access

source.

Copyrights and readers – 2. Policy - background (3/5)

13-04-23 6

The library has an extensive collection and spends more than

€ 1,500,000 per year on scientific sources.

No extra payment for authors’ copyright fees is necessary if

links are used to access licenced materials (in the library’s

digital collection).

Copyrights and readers – 2. Policy - backgroud (4/5)

13-04-23 7

In the past:

•Many administrative tasks had to be carried out and

copyright fees had to be paid to the Stichting PRO for the use

of extended extracts in readers.

•Large fines were paid to the Stichting PRO for unlawful

extracts placed in readers.

Page 8: Copyright and Readers : Faculty of Medical Sciences, UMCG policy e-Readers

Copyrights and readers – 2. Policy - background (5/5)

13-04-23 8

Present and future: The goal is not to pay any additional fees

for copyrights

•Avoid placement of extended extracts in readers so that

additional payments to the Stichting PRO are unnecessary

•Avoid fines from the Stichting PRO for unlawful placement of

extracts in readers

Copyrights and readers– 3. Practical applications - how (1/7)

13-04-23 9

In Nestor:

•Links: how to make a link to an article/PDF in the library’s

collection

•Make references to sources: paper books or to pages in a

paper book – (students may copy or scan pages in the library)

•Do not place text in the reader: unless it is from an open

access or creative commons source and cite the source

Copyrights and readers – 3. Practical applications – how (2/7)

You can make properly functioning links to articles in two ways:

1a. The fast method:

For instance, make a link directly from PubMed:

Lancet. 2014 jan 4;383(9911):48-59

Right mouse click on the red “Get it” button in PubMed and choose the option “copy

shortcut”.

You now have a link which you can paste in Nestor. This link will bring you to the SFX

menu of the RUG. If you are working outside the university environment, you will be

asked to log in first - then click “go” to get to the PDF.

1b. A direct link to the PDF of an article (more laborious):

How to make persistent links with a proxy login component:

Evid Based Nurs 2014;17:1 6-7 Published Online First:

25 May 2013 doi:10.1136/eb-2013-101235

http://proxy-ub.rug.nl/login?url= + http://dx.doi.org/ +

10.1136/eb-2013-101235 =

The link to the journal article in Nestor will be:

http://proxy-ub.rug.nl/login?url=http://dx.doi.org/

10.1136/eb-2013-101235

Page 12: Copyright and Readers : Faculty of Medical Sciences, UMCG policy e-Readers

Copyrights and readers – 3. Practical applications – how (4/7)

You can find a doi link in a PDF (search for the following article in

Verpleegkunde libguide under e-journals):

Evid Based Nurs 2014;17:1 6-7 Published Online First: 25 May 2013

doi:10.1136/eb-2013-101235

Or you can find the doi link directly in PubMed:

Lancet. 2014 jan 4;383(9911):48-59

(in PubMed you will find this link at the top of the page next to the

reference)

2. Link to an e-book in Nestor (example): copy the link given by “full text”

in the catalogue:

Search for the e-book:

“Professional guide to signs and symptoms”, 2011 in de RUG-catalogue;

right mouse click on the “full text” link and choose the option “copy

shortcut”. You now have the whole link (including the proxy login portion).

The link in Nestor to this e-book will be:

http

://proxy-ub.rug.nl/login?url=http://ovidsp.ovid.com/ovidweb.cgi?T=JS&NEWS=n&CSC=Y&PAGE

=booktext&D=books&AN=01437402$&XPATH=/PG(0

)

2. Refer to a paper book in the library’s collection for instance in

the catalogue or in Smartcat. (In this way it is possible to see

where the book is situated in the library): right mouse click on

the icon at the bottom left hand corner of the page and choose

the “copy shortcut” option. The link in Nestor will be:

http://catalogue.rug.nl/DB=1/XMLPRS=Y/PPN?PPN=338379630

Or write the reference out in full: (here - a chapter in a book):

Author, publication date, chapter title. In: book editors (Red.),

book title, place of publication : publisher.

3. Do not place a text extract directly in Nestor (short or

extended) for instance as a PDF or scanned unless it is available

under a creative commons licence or obtained from an open

access source (and then cite your source).
