A drug house in the upscale neighbourhood of Klahanie is now in the crosshairs of the Port Moody Police Department. The department noted for two months it has received numerous complaints from residents of drug activity and nuisance behaviour coming from one particular suite in the Klahanie development. Over the weekend, the department began its crack- down on the unit, paying a visit and identifying a group of heavy drug users including both men and women using the unit. No arrests were made, but Manjinder Kaila, with the Port Moody police, said some of the residents did have various conditions. “We are working closely with our partners and stake- holders from our community and have every intention of eliminating this behavior,” he said, noting the unit is being rented out. The department tweeted about the unit Saturday night: “We are dealing with an apart- ment that has been taken over by crackheads.” Kaila said police have been in contact with the owner, who is forming part of the strategy to have the tenants removed. Though police note Port Moody isn’t free of crack houses or clusters of heavy drug users living together, Kaila suggested the location of this suite is unusual. “It is considered a more higher-end area,” he told The NOW. “Just having a group of individuals residing all togeth- er and all being heavy drug users is quite uncommon.” Neighbours are crediting the quick action of the Port Coquitlam fire department for saving the life of an elderly woman from a house fire Sunday evening. The department got the call around 8 p.m. for a fire on Westminster Avenue, near Lougheed Highway and Oxford Street. Fortunately, crews were in the area on an unrelated call, and got to the house in less than two minutes. But this would not turn out to be a routine call. When they arrived, the second floor was completely engulfed by flames and the front door was locked. An elderly woman had apparently locked herself inside the burning home. “We had to break down the front door, and she didn’t want to come out and struggled with the crews [trying] to get her removed,” PoCo fire chief Nick Delmonico told The NOW. The situation was made all the more challenging, as someone had set as many as five separate fires throughout the home. “Our first concern always is for someone inside who is in danger — and thinking you’re going to go in and rescue somebody, and have them fight with you and tear off your mask not wanting to come out is a bit unusual,” Delmonico said. Eventually, crews managed to get the woman outside and knock down the blaze. An elderly man also living in the home, presumed to be her husband, also made it out safely. Marlon Mcclain’s house is right behind the burned out home. From his house he could see flames shooting several metres high from one of the bedrooms. “It’s shocking to see flames that high out the back window,” Mcclain said, adding he was surprised at how quickly the fire department arrived. Jason Lion lives down the street and heard screams coming from the burn- ing house. A few residents in the area tried to go into the house, but found the door locked. Lion was also impressed with the response time and quick work by the fire department. “It seemed like she [the woman inside] didn’t want to go,” Lion said, noting it took five firefighters to get WEDNESDAY July 25, 2012 11 Coquitlam to host its first roller derby bout on Aug. 3. If winning the Port Moody-Coquitlam byelection came downto dollars per vote, the results

might have been quite different. On Monday, Elections BC released

the financial reports of the candidatesand parties from April’s provincial bye-lection, and the numbers show spend-ing big money doesn’t necessarily leadto victory.

According to the reports, Liberalcandidate Dennis Marsden spent$95,640 on his campaign.

He finished second place in the bye-lection, collecting 3,484 votes, or 30.3per cent of the overall vote.

Marsden received $93,235 in trans-fers from the Liberal Party.

In comparison, third-place finisherBC Conservative candidate ChristineClarke spent $21,847.

She finished a distant third in therace, collecting 1,766 votes, or 15.3per cent of the vote.

The Conservative candidate received$18,280 from the party in transfers

during the campaign. But Clarke managed to get more

bang for her buck, at least between thetwo candidates who didn’t win.

It turned out Marsden spent $27 pervote, while Clarke spent just $12 pervote.

The financial reports for NDP candi-date Joe Trasolini are not yet available.

The new MLA was given an exten-sion by Elections BC to file his finan-

cial reports by Aug. 3, due to “extenu-ating” circumstances.

The original deadline for candidatesto file their financial reports was July18, 90 days after the election.

Trasolini easily made the transi-tion from mayor to MLA, winning thebyelection with 6,247 votes, or 54 percent of the vote.

As for campaign contributions,Marsden personally received a total of

$2,154 in campaign contributions.Meanwhile, Clarke personally

received $1,329 in campaign contribu-tions.

According to election results, just32 per cent of eligible voters turnedout to the polls to cast a ballot in thebyelection. The byelection for PortMoody-Coquitlam was called after IainBlack resigned in October to take a jobwith the Vancouver Board of Trade.

Royer likes PCT’s consultation plans

As Pacific Coast Terminalsbegins to sell its expansionplans to the public, thoseplans are getting a somewhatpositive response from oneoutspoken Port Moody citycouncillor.

Coun. Zoe Royer said she iscautiously optimistic of PCT’sexpansion plan, and applaudedthe company’s intentions toconsult with the public beforethe expansion moves ahead.

“Rather than telling resi-dents, as they [PCT] did withcoal, they are giving the pub-lic a lot more information,”Royer said in an e-mail to TheNOW.

Earlier this month, PCTannounced plans to expand itsoperation and is currently intalks with a couple of poten-tial customers in WesternCanada to start handling pot-ash and food-grade canola oilat its Port Moody terminal.

Officials with PCT recentlymet with Port Moody citycouncil to share the expansionplans.

Royer said her biggest con-

cern was the water treatmentpond, but noted the plan is toreplace it with a closed tank.

She said the change ultim-ately addresses that issue forher, also adding the move-ment of potash and canola oilisn’t her biggest concern.

“PCT is also inviting feed-back in person and online,”

Royer said. “Rather thanlimiting themselves to a confi-dential meeting with council, this time they plan to host anopen house. I thank PCT forlistening to people who saidthey wanted to be involved.I think they’re making somestrides in the right direction.”

The rookie councillor

caused a stir in March whenshe suggested a bylaw requir-ing public consultation whenthe city’s industrial propertyowners make major changesin excess of their baselineoperations.

When Royer brought theoriginal motion forward, she mentioned her concern

with PCT. But the councillorinsisted she was never pick-ing on PCT, and was morefocused on tanker traffic andthe movement of fossil fuelsin the inlet.

However, Royer isn’t com-pletely sold on the expansionplans either.

She listed off several con-cerns in her e-mail to TheNOW, including questionsover the forms of potash to behandled at the operation, andwhat impact a potential exten-sion of railroad tracks westof the operation would haveon the access to Reed PointMarina.

In the next six months, the company will be puttingads in newspapers, using itsChannels newsletter, launch-ing a website and hosting apublic open house on the pro-ject later in the fall.

PCT is looking at handling2.8 million tons of potashand another 750,000 tonsof canola oil annually. Thatexpansion would include theconstruction of a new rail-cardumper and conveying systemto handle the potash, andthree additional storage tanksfor the canola oil.

“Which was a good thing, ifthey [fire crews] hadn’t, andthat [the fire] had taken holdfor another minute or minuteand a half, it would have beenover,” Delmonico said, noting

the home received extensivedamage as a result of the fire.

Neither of the occupantswas seriously injured, butboth were taken to hospital asa precaution.

Several neighbours sug-gested the woman might besuffering from some type ofillness or dementia.

What likely began as atypical day for employees atthe School District 43 officeturned somewhat tense aftera bomb threat was called intothe building Monday.

The bomb threat originallycame into the Port MoodyPolice Department justbefore noon, but CoquitlamMounties took over the case, temporarily evacuating theoffice on Poirier Street tosearch for explosives. TheRCMP dog unit was also calledin for the search, but nothingwas found, police say.

The entire search lasted lessthan an hour.

“They searched the placeinside and out and no bombfound,” said RCMP Cpl. JamieChung. “We always take thiskind of call seriously, becausewho knows, there might be abomb there.”

Police have a suspect inmind, but couldn’t discloseany more information citingprivacy laws.

Though the RCMP couldn’tcomment on the specific inci-dent, Chung said police tendto take bomb threats moreseriously when more informa-tion is provided in regards tothe specific threat.

He said it was the first suchthreat to the school districtthat he could recall.

Chung also added investiga-tors don’t believe the district

needs to worry, suggestingthe incident was a “one-off”situation.

Man trashes canThere must be something

about inanimateobjects in PortMoody. For thesecond time in aweek, police hasbeen called to dealwith someonetaking out theirfrustrations on some type ofobject that can’t fight back.

On Monday, at about 2:45a.m., police were called tothe bus stop at Ioco Road andNewport Drive after gettingreports of a man yelling andthen flipping over a garbagecan.

Officers spoke to the 45-year-old Coquitlam man, whosaid he was waiting for a busto get back to Coquitlam.

Police said the man smelledof liquor, had extremely wetclothes and looked slightlydishevelled.

The department sent outthis tweet about the incident:“We just had a male attack agarbage can. We’re having abit of an issue with inanimateobjects.”

Manjinder Kaila, withthe Port Moody PoliceDepartment, noted the manhad been drinking, but since

he wasn’t extremely intoxi-cated, he wasn’t arrested.

The police aren’t sure whyhe knocked over the garbagecan.

“Maybe he missed the bus, Idon’t know,” Kaila surmised.

On July 15,Port Moody policewere called toMoray Street aftera teen was seenfighting a mailboxin the area.

In that case, police suspected the teenwas high on LSD, and it tookthree officers to subdue theyouth.

He was eventually takento hospital and later releasedwithout charges.

Eight-hour standoffIt took nearly eight hours,

but in the end, it was a suc-cessful conclusion to a stand-off between Port Moody policeand an elderly woman.

On Monday afternoon, thedepartment got a call about adistraught elderly woman.

Police eventually trackedher down, but after discus-sions with close friends at thescene, investigators deter-mined psychiatric care wasrequired.

At that point, the womanrefused to speak with officersand refused to come out of

her suite. Negotiations ensuedfor eight hours.

By 7 p.m., Police managedto safely remove the womanfrom her home and take herto a hospital for medical care.

But a press release notedthere was no danger to thepublic, and no weapons wereinvolved in the incident.

The department did notreveal the name of thewoman, or the location of thestandoff.

Cones stolenThey’re usually just objects

to avoid in the road, but anumber of traffic cones wererecently the target of thievesin Coquitlam.

Sometime Thursday night(July 19), thieves made offwith 30 traffic cones from amovie set on the old RiverviewHospital grounds.

The cones were reportedstolen Friday morning.

Local Mounties are at aloss to explain why someonewould steal the cones.

“Who would have thoughtsomeone would steal trafficcones?” said RCMP Cpl. JamieChung. “You see them onroadways all the time in con-striction areas.”

Chung estimated eachcones is worth about $30,so the theft would add up toabout $1,000.

A6 Wednesday, July 25, 2012 The NOW COQUITLAM, PORT COQUITLAM, PORT MOODY, ANMORE AND BELCARRA

Many people think a police officer’s job isresponding to 911 calls with lights flashingand sirens wailing. But the truth is police

work involves a lot more than 911 calls. It alsoinvolves a lot of people who aren’t police officers, and spending a lot of time on tasks that none of usimagined when we were in training.

Responding to unusual calls, giving presentationsto community groups, attending publicevents in uniform and answering ques-tions from the public on almost anytopic you can imagine are just some ofthe things that our team members doevery day. So, with a lull in Cop Talkreader questions for this month (weath-er-related, I hope), I thought I would usethis column to give readers an idea ofsome of the issues our call-takers handlethat don’t need lights and sirens.

Recently, a man called to report thathe bought a hamster from a pet storeand, much to his dismay, his new pet gave birth toa litter of 10 baby hamsters shortly after he broughtit home. In addition to figuring out how to accom-modate 10 more pets than expected, the man had todeal with an aggressive new hamster-mom protect-ing her brood. He called the store to ask for a refundand was refused. So his next call was to us, hopingfor a criminal justice solution.

Our call-taker listened sympathetically, explainedwhy police were unable to get involved in consumerdisputes and, ultimately, talked the man out of hisback-up plan, which was to drop the hamsters offin our parking lot. In the end the situation wasresolved without further incident and without anyharm coming to the hamster mom or her babies.

Our members are used to responding to traf-fic safety issues. Calls about speeders, impaired, aggressive and/or distracted drivers are a regularoccurrence. But every once in a while, a traffic safetycall is not what it seems. For instance, some timeago, there was an incident involving a live chickencausing some chaos at a very busy intersection. The

caller gave a meticulous description of the offender:muddled brown feathers, red comb, yellow beak, skinny chicken legs, and (of course) trying to crossthe road. In a deadpan voice, the caller told our call-taker he had asked the flapping fowl: “Why [did youcross the road]?” — but got no response.

Early one morning, one of the call-takers handleda call from a man with a bad taste in his mouth …

literally. The caller had ordered a pizzathe previous night but the pie wasn’t upto standard and a call to the pizza par-lour for a replacement was greeted witha flat-out “No.” The frustrated patrondecided to try to get the law on his sideand called us to report the offense. Ourcall-taker patiently explained to thecaller the difference between criminaland civil complaints and that therearen’t enough police officers in the cityto enforce good food. Fortunately, theexplanation went down easier than the

pizza. The caller ended up happy with our staff …but still cheesed off about his pizza.

Our call-takers have handled everything fromreports of non-human entities on patios toSasquatches crossing Lougheed Highway to a manwho drunk-dialed 911 just to sing Merry Christmas. They handle every call like the experienced profes-sionals they are and my colleagues and I couldn’t doour jobs without them.

On a more serious note, here are some tips aboutcalling the police:

• Use 911 only for emergencies such as crimesin progress or when people or property are beingthreatened. Otherwise, call our non-emergency line,604-945-1550, which is also staffed 24 hours/day.

• Stay on the line even if you dialed by accident.Once a 911 call is received we have to follow up so ifyou stay on the line to tell the call-taker you made amistake you are saving us from having to send emer-gency responders to check on your well-being.

• Let the call-taker lead the conversation. Everymember of our call centre is trained to perform

under pressure and they know exactly what ques-tions to ask. All you have to do is speak clearly andanswer every question to the best of your ability.

• Know your location. Most landlines are associat-ed with an address and that address shows when youcall 911. But cellphones don’t have the same ability. So it’s always best if you can give a 911 operator across street or landmark to help responders find you.

• Don’t become annoyed if the call-taker repeatswhat you’ve just said or asks you to repeat yourself. This is necessary to verify the information.

• Don’t hang up until the call-taker is finished.Emergency responders are often dispatched whileyou are still on the line so there’s no need to rushthe call.

• Interpretation services for 911 calls are avail-able in more than 170 languages. Locally, our staffand volunteers can speak and understand almost 40different languages. So, if you have friends or familymembers who don’t speak English or don’t speak itfluently, teach them how to say the language theyspeak in English (i.e., just learn to say “Korean” or“Spanish” in English and the call-taker will find aninterpreter that can speak that language).

• “Cop Talk” is a monthly column produced as apartnership between the Coquitlam RCMP and theCoquitlam NOW based on questions submitted byreaders. Cpl. Jamie Chung is the media relationsofficer for the Coquitlam RCMP. Questions canbe submitted to [email protected]. Youcan follow Cpl. Here’s a story you might not be aware of:fewer crimes were reported to Canadianpolice in 2011 than at any other time in

the last four decades. This runs counter to most people’s thinking:

that crime is much worse than when they wereyoung, and that the world is just not as safe aplace as it used to be.

Contrary to that popularly held view, theworld is probably safer than at any time inrecent history — at least when we’re talkingabout our little corner of it.

While there are no shortage of dire situa-tions overseas (think Syria) and even somecloser to home, such as the tragic shooting inColorado last week, police services in Canadareported nearly 2 million incidents last year— about 110,000 fewer than in 2010, accord-ing to Statistics Canada.

“Overall, this marked the eighth consecutivedecrease in Canada’s crime rate,” the studysaid. “Since peaking in 1991, the crime ratehas generally been decreasing, and is now atits lowest point since 1972.”

Before anyone gets too smug about thedifferences between Canada and the U.S.— which does have higher crime rates than wedo — crime has been decreasing there too.

So what gives? If crime is decreasing, andit’s probably safer now than when manyof today’s adults were kids, why are we soscared? One reason could be the increase inwall-to-wall media coverage of anything to dowith crime — which means that as media con-sumers, we need to remember things aren’talways what they seem.

Transit Police offer goodvalue for the money

Re: “Time to wind down this police force,”editorial, Friday, July 20.

Transit Police provide commuters greatvalue for money. Crime — especially violentcrime — on our transit system is down dra-matically thanks to Transit Police.

With fewer sworn officers than theAbbotsford Police Department, Transit Policeare responsible for 2,800 square kilometres ofbus and SkyTrain lines and about 233 milliontransit riders throughout the year.

Transit Police officers aren’t just checkingfares or providing a reassuring presence on ourSkyTrain platforms. They are solving crimesalone or in tandem with jurisdictional police, protecting private and public property, andtracking and removing repeat offenders fromour transit system.

In 2010 alone, fare checks allowed TransitPolice to arrest 117 people with outstandingwarrants and 357 who had breached court con-ditions. They also have the training to ensurethe safety of our system in a time when masstransit the world over has been targeted forattacks.

Their salaries are in line with what othermunicipal police forces are paid.

The Transit Police were created in 2004to fulfill a need identified, in part, by then-solicitor general Rich Coleman and the BCAssociation of Chiefs of Police.

That need to drive down property crime, vio-lent offenses and sexual assaults on our transitsystem has not gone away and is being wellfulfilled by Transit Police.

‘Common sense’ on pipelineI strongly agree with the common sense

position the provincial government is takingon the Northern Gateway Pipeline project. Jobcreation and economic development are vitalto our province’s future, but as it stands B.C.bears almost all of the environmental risk fromthe pipeline project while receiving few of themonetary and other benefits.

Over a 30-year period, the Northern GatewayPipeline is expected to generate $270 billionin revenue. However, of the $81 billion intax revenue the project would generate, B.C.would only receive a minor $6.7 billion shareor about $223 million per year. Asingle major oil spill on land or seacould easily cost the province thatmuch or more in environmentalcleanup, legal and other compensa-tion costs, which would leave uswith no financial benefit at all.

The people of this province should not haveto bear the considerable risks associated withoil pipelines without commensurate finan-cial benefits and ironclad safeguards for ourenvironment. The province has now set clearterms and conditions for these projects, termsand conditions that are as warranted as theyare reasonable and fair.

Pundits called into questionFor those who still believe pollsters can

accurately gauge public opinion in the ageof disappearing landlines, call display andunlisted cellphones, I’d like to remind them ofthe colossally inaccurate predictions pollstersmade in the Alberta provincial election a fewmonths ago. Based on pollsters’ predictions, the far-right Wildrose Party was going to win

by a landslide — much the same as what thepollsters have been predicting for the NDP inB.C.

However, when the votes were counted onelection night, Allison Redford’s governingcentrist PC party held 61 of 87 seats whileWildrose only took a paltry 17 seats. The poll-sters were crestfallen by the results and baffled. What happened, they wondered?

Well, what has happened is a fundamen-tal change in technology and it’s leading toseverely skewed results for pollsters. Ask your-self: How many people still have a landline? And how many people actually pick up that

landline when they see that a poll-ster or telemarketer is calling?

It all goes to show that, morethan ever, the only poll that reallymatters, or that has any validitywhatsoever, is the poll that hap-pens on election day. And basedon pure gut instinct, I predict that

few people in B.C. are going to risk handingthe provincial economy over to the NDP whenthe votes are counted on election night nextMay.

Massimo MandarinoVancouver

•••If the political pundits are correct (and I

sincerely hope they are wrong) the NDP couldassume power in this province a little over ayear from now. If this proves to be the case,it would not be long before the NDP’s poorinsight into economic policy leads to a sorrow-ful replay of their past attempts at government.

Before long, the investment communitywould be pulling back and job creation wouldbecome problematic. At the same time, theNDP would have little or no appetite for con-trolling government spending. With billions ofdollars needed to meet the collective demands

of teachers, nurses and civil servants, not tomention unsustainable levels of health-carespending and public sector pensions, wherewould government revenue be found?

Within a few years of an NDP governmenttaking power, we would also likely see annualdeficits in the billions of dollars, a loss of ourprovincial AAA credit rating, and a new taxregime systematically extracting more dol-lars from all of us. Currently, B.C. taxpayerswho earn up to $120,000 pay less tax than anyother taxpayer in Canada, and the NDP wouldnot be able to resist this as a source of new taxrevenue.

Since it is unlikely the NDP will suddenlygain any insight into economic policy, I hopethe predictions of the pundits will serve as awarning to the people of this province aboutthe NDP rather than as an unalterable predic-tion that the NDP will assume power next year.

The decibel level has beencapped and so has the fre-quency, but the issue won’t befully dealt with until at leastSeptember.

The issue of the churchbells at Our Lady of theAssumption Church wasagain brought to the forefrontat Monday’s PoCo councilmeeting, with Prairie Avenueresident Wendy McHaffie andothers questioning counciland staff on a number ofpoints related to the bells.

Some of the concerns cen-tred around the consistencyof the bells ringing — withsome suggesting the bellschime every hour on the hour— while others wonderedwhy the city is not issuingbylaw infraction notices to thechurch in light of so manycomplaints.

Those complaints not onlyhave to do with the bells, but also with parking and airquality issues.

“We have had nothing butproblems with parishion-

ers parking illegally in thelane behind the 2200 blockof Prairie [Avenue]. This hasgone on for years and yet thecity did nothing,” McHaffiesaid.

The ringing of church bellsis exempted under the city’snoise bylaw. In other instan-ces when the noise bylawis contravened — excessivenoise between the hours of 11p.m. and 7 a.m., for example— guilty parties are subject toa $2,000 fine.

The city has stated itwill not begin ticketing thechurch, which is located at3141 Shaughnessy St., untila review of the matter goesto council in the fall. In themeantime, the city has toldchurch officials the bells can-not exceed 70 decibels.

According to Dan Scoones, the city’s manager of bylawservices, the bells can nowonly ring at specific times:Saturday evenings prior tomass at 5:30 p.m.; Sundaysbetween 9 and 9:30 a.m and11 and 11:30 a.m.; Sundayevening mass, which is cur-rently scheduled for 7:30 p.m.;and between 10 a.m. and 4

p.m. on days when specialevents like weddings andfunerals are held. The bellsare also tentatively allowed toring daily at noon and 6 p.m.

Many on council arguedthe city wants the church andsurrounding neighbours tocome up with a suitable reso-lution, so the “heavy hand ofgovernment” isn’t forced tointervene.

“We want to find a com-munity solution,” said MayorGreg Moore.

“The issue is how to arriveat a reasonable comprom-ise,” added Coun. Brad West.“The challenge is that certainpeople have different expecta-

tions of what that looks like. There will be some peoplewho won’t be happy untilthere’s maybe no ringing ofthe bells.”

Coun. Mike Forrest saidneighbours have put up with“quite an intrusion” since thechurch was rebuilt a few yearsago, and did not rule out re-visiting the city’s bylaws if areasonable compromise can’tbe found by the fall.

“We come together in thefall and we speak about whatwe can do going forward, knowing very much that itis possible that we will gothrough a bylaw process forchange if we don’t come up

with, or hear about and havea plan for, some changes in

favour of community for theneighbourhood,” he said.

News

Dozens of Port Coquitlamresidents have been grantedmore than a month to educatethemselves and voice theiropinions on a proposed 17-unit townhouse developmenton Salisbury Avenue.

Council was scheduled tomake a decision on the re-zoning application Monday, but decided to postpone thediscussion until Sept. 10.

The city’s about-face cameafter a handful of residentswho attended Monday’s publichearing suggested they hadlittle knowledge of the pro-posed development, and evenless advanced warning of thepublic hearing.

“Should this project bedeveloped as proposed, itwould be out of place for thecommunity and the characterof our neighbourhood,” saidEdinburgh Street residentBen Wilson. “It would be acomplete eye sore.”

At issue is the redevelop-ment of a parcel of land inthe 2100 block of Salisbury, between Shaughnessy andFlint streets.

Currently zoned for resi-dential single dwelling, theproposed zoning amendmentwould change the land usedesignation to residentialtownhouse 3. The proposedcomplex would feature 15three-storey units, while theunits in each of the develop-ments would be two storeys inheight.

Single car garages, access-ible through a back lane, would also be included, whilethe developer would also haveto provide other amenities:paving the back lane, buildinga new sidewalk and providinglandscaping and trees.

However, those attendingthe public hearing felt thedevelopment took a steepdeparture from the characterof the neighbourhood.

“We’ve enjoyed living inthis area now for 19 yearsand strongly feel that thisproposed development willchange the neighbourhoodform the quiet neighbour-hood it currently is to one ofnoise and congestion,” saidEdinburgh Street residentAnne Larson.

Other resident concernsincluded the possibilities of adecrease in property values, increased crime and traffic.

Couns. Michael Wright andGlenn Pollock voted againstadjourning Monday’s discus-sion and rescheduling thedebate for mid-September.

“I’m concerned that we maymake a decision two monthsdown the road that we’d makenow,” Pollock said.

Coun. Mike Forrest alsoacknowledged that a month-plus gap could be problematic, and lamented the fact thatsome residents were caughtoff guard by the proposal.

“It’s always a concern, Ithink, around council that

people don’t make the timeand some don’t have the time,

to come forward to have theirsay. It is a concern to us and

we’ve heard it before,” he said. The city will revisit its pub-

lic notification process aroundthe property — including mail

outs and ads — in advance ofthe Sept. 10 meeting.

By day, they’re businessmanagers, teachers oreven special education

assistants.By night, they don fishnets

and leg warmers with one sin-gular purpose — to kick somebooty.

Come Friday, Aug. 3, par-ticipants with the Free Agentsroller derby team will taketo the confines of the PoirierSport and Leisure Complex forthe first ever roller derby “bout”in Coquitlam.

Made up of a core group ofabout 40 participants, the FreeAgents will take on a travellingteam from Revelstoke for anhour’s worth of booty blockingand jamming.

Though they do count menamong their ranks, the Aug. 3bout will feature members ofthe fairer sex only.

“We’re definitely athletes,”said Free Agents captain LeeWindsor, whose derby name isMya Diction. “It is fast-pacedand definitely a physical sport. We try to make it PG-13, so ifyou’re OK with booty shorts, the occasional leg warmer andfishnets, then you shouldn’thave a problem.”

Popularized in the 1970s and’80s, roller derby has enjoyed somewhat of a renais-sance in recent years in Metro Vancouver — whenWindsor first took to the sport five years ago, onlyone team existed.

Fast forward to today, and 50 leagues and teamshave sprouted up across B.C.

“The fact that it was very physicalcaught my eye right away,” Windsorsaid of her initial attraction to thegame.

“Not just the hitting part of it, butthe fact that there’s always actionhappening. The other thing thatcaught me was the camaraderie onthe teams afterwards. They wouldget out on the track and smack thecrap out of each other, but thenafterwards, they’re giving each otherhigh fives and helping each otherup.”

Played on a flat oval track, a rollerderby contest is referred to as a boutand consists of either three 20-minute periods, ortwo 30-minute periods.

Each club is allowed 14 players on its gamedayroster, with five participants from each team onthe oval at any given time: four blockers and one

jammer. The action is set up with the two jammers— the players who score points — stationed aboutsix metres behind the pack of eight blockers. Theplay begins with blockers taking off first, while thejammers attempt to pass them.

The first jammer to pass through a pack becomeswhat’s referred to as the “lead jam-mer,” provided she passes throughthe group without taking a penalty.

The lead jammer has the ability tocall off a jam — nullifying the otherteam’s ability to score — althoughif she doesn’t, the jam lasts twominutes before a 30-second breakallowing time to change the playerson the floor.

And while roller derby is a fullcontact sport, there are some rules:hits must be above the knees andbelow the shoulders, elbow strikesand punching are disallowed and sois hitting from behind.

Everything else, however, is prettymuch fair game and roller derby participants havethe battle wounds to back that claim up.

“Our hits are real, and people do get hurt,” saidWindsor, noting concussions and broken legs are parfor the course.

“But afterwards, we party as hard as we play.”Rules aside, the essence of roller derby is to pro-

mote the strength and independence of its partici-pants.

Windsor said the majority of the women on herteam haven’t participated in team sports before, and have no problem with the unabashed style thatcomes with the game.

Crass names — oftentimes a crude play on words— make up the rosters and the players keep with thePG-13 image in that they’re not afraid to show someskin.

“I’m sitting in my office right now in a businesssuit, but later at practice I’ll be wearing leg warmers, fishnets, booty shorts and, of course, my red sequinbra,” said Windsor, 41.

Outside of the bout itself, vendors and tables willbe set up at the Sports Centre to help recruit newplayers and educate prospective participants aboutthe game.

“My goal is to elevate the awareness in the publicto the point where it gets to be one of those sportsthat gets reported on regularly,” Windsor said.

• The Aug. 3 event, intended for those 13 andup, kicks off at 6:30 p.m., while the bout begins at7 p.m. Tickets cost $12 in advance or $15 at thedoor. For details, see www.livefastpromo.com.

Thank goodness for some summer weatherthis year. A year ago we went straightfrom “Junuary” into a similarly drenched

July, but this year we’ve already hit the sprayparks, the outdoor pools and had picnics at thepark.

I truly think summer is meant to be spentoutdoors, and having a growing boy now Iappreciate the space and energyconsumption that is afforded bygood weather more than ever.Sometimes spending time indoorsreminds me of nuclear fission asmy kids careen about the houselike a pair of newly released neu-trons (OK, maybe that’s just me— I grew up with my Dad workingat a nuclear power station). By thetime we get to spring though, mytwo are wound up tight and readyto be released, and this summer has been awonderful antidote to those wintry indoor days.

I’ve read quite a bit recently about the con-nection between humans and nature, the con-cerns of people submerged in urban environ-ments and the effect nature can have on healthas well as our understanding of the world.Getting the kids outside seems more import-ant than ever, and the best bit is that they loveevery second of it. Now I’m the first to admitthat mine often need quite a bit of coercion toturn off the computer or TV and get out therein the first place, but once they’re out therethey enjoy checking out the dandelions (themost promising flower in our garden!), thesour bugs — a.k.a. roly-poly bugs, a.k.a. wood-lice (what is the correct term?) — bouncing onthe trampoline and swinging on the swing. Atthe end of the day it’s no different trying to getthem into the bath: utter resistance followedby another 10 to 15 minutes trying to get themout and into pyjamas.

Of course at 5 a.m. one sunny morninglast week I was less than impressed by thesummer’s early wakening, but at least my kidsare so worn out by their time outdoors that the

longer evenings aren’t causing too much dif-ficulty with sleep. A few extra-hot nights haveleft them restless and rather grumpy with it,but it seems that biking, walking, swimming, tennis, basketball and spray parks have leftthem succumbing to sleep relatively easily.

I work from home these days and need tocontinue to work throughout the summer,

which means balancing the kidshaving a ton of fun, them havingplenty of time with Mum, and megetting my work done. The firstthree weeks of the holidays didn’texactly go to plan with family sick-ness (huge thanks to all family andfriends who helped us out immeas-urably), but for the most part it’scompletely manageable becauseour local cities do a tremendousjob of providing services that are

first class. While Son enjoyed a week at day-care this week, Daughter went to one of thecity summer camps and had a fantastic timedoing crafts, cooking, science, archery, canoe-ing and more. By the end of the week she wasalready begging me to sign her up for moreweeks, she’d enjoyed herself so much. In thelate afternoon and early evening we still have achoice of parks, playgrounds, spray parks, bikeparks, swimming and wading pools and trailswhere we can choose to spend family timetogether, and the libraries are even offeringpark story times and, of course, outdoor mov-ies have been taking place in all three cities.

I’m not sure if combining TV and the out-doors really makes TV viewing any better forour kids, but it sure makes for a memorablesummer evening and I can’t think of a bet-ter way for my kids to enjoy their youth thanbuilding lots and lots of great memories ofsummers spent blissfully having fun fromdawn until dusk. I think Morecambe & Wisegot it just right with their song “Bring MeSunshine.” Enjoy!

It is possible to enjoy a restaurantmeal with your kids, but it takessome planning.

When you are going to be bring-ing an infant, try to arrange yourmealtime to co-ordinate with hernap time. Ideally, if you can feed heras soon as you get settled at the tableshe’ll then drift off and nap whileyou eat your dinner.

Choosing a boothworks best. A booth willgive you space for herbaby seat and booths area bit darker so it’s easierfor her to nap. It’s alsomore private for whenyou are nursing her.

Whether you can planyour meal around hernap or not, bring plentyof supplies. Plan for her to be awakethe whole time. Bring diapers andwipes, a blanket (in case the restau-rant is drafty), extra drinks if she’sdrinking juice or water and soft quiettoys that you know she enjoys.

Place her so that she can seewhat’s going on. She will love look-ing at all the people and activity anddoubtless there will be folks who willwant to smile at her and make sillyfaces. Avoid noisy or hard plastictoys. You want her engaged but notnoisy.

It gets more challenging withtoddlers and preschoolers. Theyaren’t satisfied to simply sit andlook around; they want to be activeand to be entertained. Besides allthe supplies you would bring with ababy, bring toys. Soft picture books,

crayons and colouring books aregood choices. You may want to alsoinclude some favourite finger foods.

I know some parents who like togo to their neighbourhood restau-rant. They know the menu so theyphone ahead and order the meals. They time it so the food arrivesshortly after they are seated. It

makes it easier for them,it’s sensible for littleones who aren’t good atsitting and waiting, andthe restaurant loves it.They have customersbut not disruptions. Ifyou can’t order ahead, and you are dining withtoddlers or preschoolers, order meals that don’ttake too much time to

prepare. This is not the time fora specialty order that requires 20minutes.

It’s best to plan to go out duringyour child’s regular mealtime. If theyare not yet hungry or are absolutelystarved, you are asking for problems.

While you are waiting for yourmeal, take the kids for a short walk.Maybe you can go around the outsideof the restaurant or if they are toilettrained, I guarantee you they willwant to see the restrooms. Kids arefascinated by public bathrooms.

Being successful with older chil-dren at a restaurant is simply a caseof good manners. I have observedparents with school-aged and teenchildren in restaurants and I canusually predict within a few minuteswhich families will have problems.

I’ve seen parents arrive with theirkids and then simply ignore them. The adults are chatting away andexpecting their kids will just sitquietly and wait for their food, andthen eat equally quietly. In thesesituations kids tend to behave badly, just to get some attention. They arereminding their folks that they arealso present.

However, if the parents involvetheir children in conversation, it’s sopleasant. Everyone is chatting andsmiling and laughing and having agreat time. Treat your children withthe same respect as you do the otheradults and you will have a lovelymeal.

Taking kids out to restaurants(other than the obvious fast food

spots) is great. You get a break fromcooking and your children are learn-ing how to behave while eating inpublic.

Westcoast SeniorsSmart estate planning includes charitable giving

E S T A T E P L A N N I N G

AFor many people, the notion of estate planning is not very exciting. But, it’s anecessary evil. The fact is that settling an estate can be tricky business if a solid written

plan isn’t prepared well in advance.

One of the biggest reasons why you should have one is to protect your heirs andbeneficiaries from paying a large tax bill. This bill comes after your death when yourproperty, investments and any other assets aresold. This federal, provincial and capital gainstax bill could potentially take a large bite outof your net value. So here are some tips to helpyou prepare a solid estate plan.

First, meet with the experts who will ensurethat your plan is solid and legal.Your lawyerwill help you select two essential peoplein your plan: a power of attorney and anexecutor. The power of attorney will have thelegal authority to make medical decisions onyour behalf per your living will. When you die, your executor will be legally responsible forensuring that your estate is settled as definedby your will. It’s important that you choosewisely and keep your loved ones informed ofyour choices.Your lawyer can also help youto create a will and a living will, which aredifferent but equally important parts of yourestate plan. A will outlines how you would likeyour assets to be divided. The living will defines your medical instructions for your doctorand family in case you’re unable to speak for yourself.

Your financial advisor will help you take an inventory of your assets and liabilities. Knowingwhat you have will make distribution to your loved-ones easier. Also consider speaking toyour advisor about donating your life insurance policy to your favourite charity. This cansubstantially reduce your current taxes and the taxes owing at your death.

“By including this donation in your plan, you’llhelp a charity, achieve your philanthropicgoals and reduce your tax burden,” explainedReh Bhanji, life insurance expert fromDesjardins Financial Security.“Typically, thefederal tax credit on a charitable donation is15 per cent on the first $200 and 29 per centon the remaining amount. Depending onyour home province, you can benefit from anadditional tax credit.”

According to Bhanji, taking advantage of thistype of charitable donation can be done inone of the following ways:

• During your lifetime, through premiumpayments; in this case, the charity must thepolicyholder and the beneficiary.

• At your death, by bequeathing the insuranceamount to the charity or designating thecharity as the beneficiary of the policy.

For more information about including alife insurance donation in your estate plan, speak to your financial advisor. Or for moreimmediate answers, visit Desjardins Financial Security at www.desjardinslifeinsurance.com.

A five-game run has turned theCoquitlam Adanacs from chasers intothe ones being chased.

The senior A lacrosse squad pulledinto a first-place tie by bouncing theBurnaby Lakers 10-5 on Friday andedging the Nanaimo Timbermen 10-9on Saturday.

The two wins improved the Adanacsto 10-6-0, tying them with the LangleyThunder for top spot in the WesternLacrosse Association.

“I think people doubted us all year,

especially because of our season lastyear,” remarked sniper Daryl Veltman.“We’ve got the team to do it this year,we’ve got a lot of great guys. Ourcoaching staff is doing a great job withus, we’ve got a lot of young guys will-ing to buy into the system.”

Dane Dobbie’s marker at 12:43 ofthe third proved to be the difference, but those in attendance will give a bigcredit to netminder Nick Rose and thepenalty killers, who were kept on thefloor for nearly half the final frame.

The penalties resulted in Nanaimoerasing a two-goal deficit and tying thegame on Scott Ranger’s fifth goal ofthe night with 10 minutes left.

After Dobbie put Coquitlam backahead, the Adanacs killed anotherpenalty, and, with time winding down, got a goalmouth stand by Rose anddefender Brad Richardson to stop JoelHenry and lock up the win.

“We weathered the storm when theygot [on] the run but it was the samestory all year. Nick Rose makes the big

saves at the end to preserve the win,he’s the backbone to our team,” saidJon Harnett.

Veltman finished with three goalsand two assists, Dobbie had a goaland five helpers and Steve McKinlaychipped in a pair of tallies.

Against Burnaby, Daniel McQuadeand Kevin Olson tallied twice each.

Coquitlam’s next test is Thursday,7:30 p.m. in New West. They wrap upthe regular season Saturday againstBurnaby (7 p.m. at the Poirier centre).

He went, he skated and he shined. For Mathew Barzal, nothing less

was expected. The Coquitlam hockey player was

among those invited to last week’sAllstate All-Canadian MentorshipCup in Mississauga, featuring thenation’s best bantam-aged players.

“It was definitely one of the cool-est experiences of my life in hock-ey,” Barzal told The NOW. “Therewas about 4,000 fans screaming thewhole time, I’m playing with andagainst the best players in Canada. It was just incredible.”

Skating for the Taylor Hall team, the five-foot-nine centre scoredtwice and set up two others.

“I kind of caught the defence-man in a awkward spot, I had toslip it by as he hauled me down,”recalled Barzal of his second tallyin the third period. “The best partwas that it was against my BurnabyWinter Club teammate (goalie NickMcBride). It gave me braggingrights for a moment.”

The game, which was nationallytelevised, ended up with Team JohnTavares winning 9-8 in a shootout.

The event was hosted by theNHL Players’ Association, and fea-tured five members of the WesternCanadian champion BWC roster— Barzal, McBride, Adam Musil,Ty Ronning and defenceman TySchultz.

Barzal was lined up againstOntario’s top 15-year-old ConnorMcDavid for much of the night.McDavid, playing for the Tavaresteam, received the lion’s share ofpublicity entering the week, but theOntario media quickly caught onto Barzal, who was the first-overalldraft pick at the Western HockeyLeague bantam draft in May.

“Connor is a special player andit was great to be on the ice withhim [and] play against him,” theDr. Charles Best Secondary studentsaid. “It was kind of cool to go toOntario and have a special game. Inthe end, the experience was totallyworth it.”

The six-day event included meet-ing a number of NHL players, including Jason Spezza, MartinBiron, Jeff Skinner and TylerSeguin. It meant facing TV bright

Coquitlam teen makes B.C. record toss

Lisa King/NOW

Coquitlam’s Chanell Botsis shows off her medal haul from last week’s B.C. Summer Games. The13-year-old was awarded the event’s most outstanding athlete award.

Stories by Dan [email protected]

Distance is no disincentive to Chanell Botsis. The Coquitlam teen is eager to bridge the gap

from A to B — and demonstrated that skill lastweekend when she dominated the girls throwingevents at the B.C. Summer Games in Surrey.

The 13-year-old set a new B.C. Summer Games’record with her javelin throw of 43.06 metres, andadded gold medals in discus and hammerthrow toher collection.

Her javelin throw also set a new personal best, adding nearly three metres to her past top mark.

“I was really surprised — I was expecting a littleover 40 (metres), so the distance was pretty nice,”said Botsis.

It earned her the W.R. Bennett Award as theoutstanding athlete, and a lot of attention.

“I kind of knew I’d win a couple of golds, butthere was a lot of good competition,” she recalls. “Iwas just happy to throw well.”

A French Immersion student heading to Dr.Charles Best Secondary in September, Botsisaccepted the award and was the focus of photog-raphers for that moment. Since then, she’s doneCBC radio interviews in English and French.

Although the introduction to media attentionis a nice touch, Botsis is grounded in her passionfor her track events. Training with the RichmondKajaks’ throwing coaches Richard Collier and DonSteen, the teen has met and trained alongsideCurtis Moss, who is heading to London to competenext week at the Olympics.

“He’s been great,” she said of Moss. “He alwaysgives me tips, he’s so nice. Getting to see how hetrains makes me want to be at that level, too.”

In track and field for the past four years, Botsiswas drawn to the throwing events early andimmediately felt comfortable.

“I like the javelin and hammerthrow the best— they are both fun to do,” she said. “I rememberthe first time I competed in javelin in a Coquitlammeet, I wasn’t expecting to win. When I did win, Iwas pretty surprised and pleased.”

The B.C. Games were her first big meet.Next month, Botsis will represent B.C. at the

Legion Youth nationals in Charlottetown, PEIfrom Aug. 15 to 21.
