Many exciting events have been taking place over the past few weeks and “Manning coming to the Miami Dolphins” has been top on the list. We’ll have to see how that plays out. Still, as the philanthropic season marks its end, new experiences will commence.

This month indicates the beginning of springtime. The rains will fall and everything will begin to bloom. It seems nature knows exactly what she is doing when it comes to life, even though we sometimes try to divert what is about to happen with our own plans.

Things change, time moves and hurt passes, but the one thing which remains constant is life will go on. Elton John put it to words and song, saying, “In the circle of life it’s the wheel of fortune, it’s the leap of faith, it’s the band of hope, till we fi nd our place on the path unwinding in the circle, the circle of life.”

As in years past, many communities will be holding ceremonies and Relay’s for Life. This American Cancer Society fundraising effort brings together survivors, patients and memories of fi ghts well fought. Like many, I know or knew family and friends with this terrible disease, so I participate, contributing my time and resources to the successful efforts of the organizers. But this year takes on a whole new meaning. Recently my mother underwent a procedure to remove a lump and more was uncovered. Now, we are discussing the options about future protocols.

She is in relatively good health and high spirits. The qualities

resonating from her are of optimism and gratitude. In her mid-seventies, and a widow for more than ten years, she has a calm reassurance about her knowing we all will face our time.

Mom always taught me that life will bring you opportunities and obstacles. I’ve come to understand that it’s not what you face which reveals ones true self, but how you face it. You have to make each day count and leave behind a better place for future generations. So, I encourage you to participate in some way in making our city a better place, in your own way, and thus completing the circle.

Many of us will also celebrate our respective High Holidays – Easter and Passover. These holidays

commemorate a rebirth of spiritual proportion. I wish all my family and friends the happiest of holidays.

So, as you move into the month ahead and as you try to fi nd your way on the path, I urge you to make each day count and to follow the words of Ghandi, “Be the Change You Want to See in the World!”

As Always, Enjoy the Lifestyle ™

H HENRI

BENDELSince the 1890s, stylish women the world over have been seen

wearing Henri Bendel accessories.

But while the venerable brand has never gone out of style, it seems

that it has extra special buzz in 2012. Why?

Maybe, because Henri Bendel specializes in fashionable

accessories, cosmetics, jewelry, footwear, fragrances and more attracting a rabid following of

female sophisticates.

If you can’t visit the fl agship store in Manhattan (a landmark), visit www.henribendel.com to fi nd a

location near you.

So why is Henri Bendel hot?

Maybe it’s the signature black and white colors of its handbags

and beauty cases, or maybe it’s because trendsetters like Rachel

Bilson and Abigail Breslin have been spotted wearing Henri Bendel around Hollywood.

Check out Henri Bendel’s Fresh and Flirty spring collection

of handbags called the No. 7 Citrus Collection and the brand

new “Henri Rocks Chandelier Earrings.” You’ll be sure to turn

heads. You don’t have to love country or

folk music to love The Civil Wars. You just have to love good music.

Take it from us, The Civil Wars are about to break. The group, fresh off winning two Grammy’s, is composed of singer-songwriters Joy Williams and John Paul White.

They’ve already appeared on

Letterman and Leno, recorded with Taylor Swift and been christened the “next big thing” by the `in the know’ critics, including your friends at Lifestyle Publications.

Check out their album Barton Hollow and remember your friends at Lifestyle Publications told you fi rst.

Foodies are predicting the rise of gluten free fare and retro foods and the fall of cupcakes and pop-up restaurants.

While we are not ready to write off the cupcake, we do think the gluten free movement has legs.

An estimated 10 percent of the population has some sort of gluten s e n s i t i v i t y — g i v i n g restaurants a chance to cash in by serving this growing niche.

As for retro fare, start looking for the tried and true to reappear on your menus: meatloaf, fried chicken, hot dogs and fruit pies are making their way from the diner to a wider variety of restaurants. Maybe it’s the times, maybe it’s the nostalgia—but there’s something to be said for bringing back meatloaf. This food just makes you smile.

Another trend worth watching is the growth of “communal restaurant tables.” Whether you’re a party of six or a table for one, it doesn’t matter.

When upscale restaurants offer communal tables there is room for everyone. Shy diners may have to adjust to sharing a meal next to strangers, but social folks will appreciate the opportunity to meet new people over a memorable meal. Watch for this European trend to grow in the United States in 2012 and beyond.

FUNdraiser Sends Kids to Camp“IN JACOB’S SHOES” IS HOSTING ITS SECOND ANNUAL “SEND A KID TO CAMP…AND MORE! FUNDRAISER” ON SUNDAY MAY 6, AT 4:00 PM AT RON BERGERON’S GREEN GLADES RANCH IN WESTON.

The event’s proceeds will be used to provide grants to local camp, athletic and enrichment programs

for children in need as well as shoes, camp and school supplies.

The festivities will include a barbeque dinner, music and entertainment, fun activities for the entire family, an auction, raffl es and an evening at the breathtaking Green Glades Ranch. Over 500 guests are expected to attend and experience a true Florida cowboy experience at one of Florida’s most unique locations.

“The event will

be fun for the entire family. Last year’s inaugural event raised $60,000 and funded grants to 13 local organizations. Our goal this year is to increase the number of organizations receiving grants. Every child deserves a chance to go to camp. Our event will make this happen for so many children in Broward and Palm Beach Counties,” says Murray Zweig, co-founder of In Jacob’s Shoes.

Murray and Harlene Zweig formed In Jacob’s Shoes in memory of their son, Jacob.

The mission of In Jacob’s Shoes is to provide new and gently worn shoes, school supplies and athletic gear to children in need. Grants and scholarships are also awarded for camp, aftercare, sports and enrichment programs. In Jacob’s

Shoes is a 501(c)(3) public charity and is operated by an all-volunteer staff. Throughout the year, volunteers collect, sort and clean shoes which are distributed to local schools, camps, shelters, charities and organizations that care for children in need.

“We have a dedicated group of volunteers. With their help, we are able to get it all done…from shoes to camp. The annual FUNdraiser is how we make camp happen for the kids. Our guests last year loved the FUNdraiser. Bergeron’s Green Glades Ranch is something not to miss. The afternoon is casual and fun and has something for everyone”, says Harlene Zweig.

Admission to the In Jacob’s Shoes “Send A Kid To Camp…and more! FUNdraiser is $50 for adults, $25 for children, and children 3 and under attend free. For more information, including ticket purchases, visit www.injacobsshoes.org or call 954.757.9030.

American Cancer Society Honors Special Contributors at Annual Gala ON MAY 12, 400 LOCAL BUSINESS, CIVIC, AND PHILANTHROPIC LEADERS WILL COME TOGETHER TO RAISE MONEY FOR THE AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY AND ITS R.O.C.K. PROGRAMS AT THE BROWARD UNIT’S 8TH ANNUAL GALA.

Held at Gulfstream Park, the 2012 Birthday Ball will honor Dr. Fred Lippman, Chancellor at Nova Southeast University and former State Representative; Alligator Ron Bergeron, philanthropic leader in Broward, and Survivor of the Year, Roth Sabath.

Reaching Out to Cancer Kids, or R.O.C.K., is made up of three programs for children with cancer or who have survived childhood cancers. It includes the R.O.C.K. Scholarship Program, R.O.C.K. Family Weekend, and R.O.C.K. Camp.

Established in 1976, R.O.C.K. Camp is the fi rst camp for children with cancer in the U.S. Held at Camp Boggy Creek, R.O.C.K. provides kids ages 7 to 16 being treated for cancer or who have survived the disease the opportunity to enjoy summer camp without having to feel different from other children. R.O.C.K. Camp

features traditional summer camp activities such as swimming, music, arts and crafts, fi shing, horseback riding and camp fi res.

“It is free to the kids due to the generosity of those who attend our Annual Ball,” explained this year’s

Gala Chair Dr. Irv Rosenbaum of Nova Southeastern University. “Thanks to those who supported last year’s event, 19 kids from Broward County were able to attend camp, 34 teens received scholarships, and 12 families attended R.O.C.K. Family Weekend.”

Guests at the event will enjoy a night of dining, dancing, and the

opportunity to bid on a showcase of items themed “Birthday Wishes Can Come True”.

These items include the use of a catered suite at the new Miami Marlins Stadium, a ride on the Goodyear Blimp, a weekend of fi shing in the Keys, dancing, art, and scuba lessons, designer handbags, jewelry, and more.

“We are very fortunate to have such generous contributors to this event,” said Broward Unit Operating Board Chair Dr. Jill Sumfest. “Because of the continued support to our Gala, we are able to provide services to our community through our R.O.C.K. Programs, rides to cancer treatment, support groups, free wigs and prosthesis and other services.”

As the “Offi cial Sponsor of Birthdays”, the American Cancer Society saves lives and creates a world with less cancer by helping people stay well, get well, fi nd cures, and fi ght back.

For more information about the event, contact the Broward Unit at (954) 200-7516.

AIR AROUND THE CLOCK A/C & APPLIANCE SERVICE Mr. Lang, I don’t normally write letters to companies about their products but I feel compelled to share my experience with the Mitsubishi Split-Type Air Conditioner that you installed for me about 6 months ago. I love it! The Mitsubishi Mr. Slim is the perfect unit for my bedroom; I can super-cool the room in minutes with incredibly flexible airflow direction and fan speed. Also, I can make adjustments from my bedside with the handy remote any time of night or day. Did I mention how quiet the system is? It’s truly impressive! Now the real reason for writing: my allergies have almost disappeared! After living in Florida for 40 years, I was resigned to the fact that my breathing would never be free and clear with all the molds and fungi our climate produces. Well, about a month ago, I realized I could breathe effortlessly through my nose. How can this be? Then it dawned on me, it’s the anti-allergy enzyme filter that I read about in the manual. While Mr. Slim has many great features, improved air quality is such a fantastic benefit that you might want to recommend this system to your customers with allergy issues. It is truly an outstanding air conditioning system. Sincerely, Cynthia from Plantation

The biggest names in non-profi t graced the red carpet on Friday, February 24th for the 2nd Annual BankAtlantic Non-Profi t Academy Awards.

This A-list soiree is the single most prestigious event in Broward County that recognizes leaders and organizations for excellence in the non-profi t sector.

“The BankAtlantic Non-Profi t Academy Awards presented by 2-1-1 Broward and hosted by Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino is unique. It celebrates and honors the achievements and inspiring work of Broward’s outstanding non-profi t leaders and agencies,” said Jarett Levan, President & CEO, BankAtlantic.

2-1-1 Broward, the only agency in the county that provides 24/7 comprehensive helpline services to any Broward resident seeking emotional support, crisis/suicide intervention, information, needs assessment and referrals to health and human services agencies, brought the star-studded 2nd Annual BankAtlantic Non-Profi t Academy Awards to a sell-out crowd of more than 625 guests.

“The Non-Profi t Academy Awards was created to bring the non-profi ts to the forefront and offer a day that is just for them and gives them the opportunity to shine,” said Gregory Haile, 2-1-1 Broward board chair and VP of Government and Regulatory Affairs at Broward College.

The Non-Profi t Academy Award frenzy kicked off on January 24th when the three nominees in each of the seven categories were announced at the chic VIP Announcement Party, presented by Broward Health at the extravagant estate of Steve Savor and catered by Anthony’s Coal Fired Pizza. The competition was fi erce with 97 outstanding non-profi t leaders and organizations in the fi eld, but this year’s judges spent countless hours selecting the top contenders.

The main event, with all the famous images of the real Academy Awards – golden statues, red carpets, paparazzi and headliner entertainment, was held at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino. “The Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino is a proud supporter of 2-1-1 Broward and appreciates the concept of this spectacular event – to honor the work of so many non-profi ts,” said event co-chair, Susan Renneisen, Director of Special Events, Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino. co-chairs were Jen Klaassens, Wasie Foundation and Marcia Barry-Smith, BankAtlantic.

The Red Carpet Reception sponsored by Memorial Healthcare Systems, set the tone for the event with explosions of conversation, pure excitement and live gold statues. The reception had all the makings of a Hollywood gala, including champagne compliments of Premier Beverages, offered to guests by a golden goddess sponsored by BB&T. Paparazzi was out in full force catching guests posing at the Red Carpet Media Runway sponsored by Consolidated Credit Counseling.

Guests were then treated to a surprise performance by Cirque Dreams, POP GOES THE ROCK, the event’s Headline Entertainment Sponsor. WSVN’s Deco Drive Co-Host and event emcee Lynn Martinez delivered a witty monologue. Lynn’s Cleopatra-style entrance was befi tting of the fun-loving Deco Drive Diva.

The anticipation soared as representatives of McGladrey, the offi cial accounting fi rm of this year’s Awards, delivered the sealed envelopes

bearing the names of the winners under the watchful guard of Broward Sheriff Al Lamberti.

Then the suspense was lifted as the distinguished winners of each of the seven award categories were announced. 2-1-1 Broward awarded a cumulative total of $16,000 to winners and nominees at the event. Each winner received an Academy Award statue and $1,000 for their non-profi t organization. All other nominees were awarded $500 each.

The 2012 winners are: Lighthouse of Broward, by The Wasie Foundation Non-Profi t Organization of the Year – Advocacy; FLITE Center, Patriot

National Insurance Group Non-Profi t Organization of the Year – Innovation; Broward Bulldog, Calvin, Giordano and Associates Non-Profi t Organization of the Year – Rising Star; Robin Martin of HOPE South Florida, Broward College Non-Profi t Leader of the Year; Cathy Donnelly of Boys and Girls Club, OK Generators Non-Profi t Board Leader of the Year; Children’s Home Society of Florida, Berger Singerman Outstanding Non-Profi t Organization of the Year; Dr. Erwin M. Vasquez (posthumously) of Light of the World Clinic, AutoNation Lifetime Achievement Award.

“I’m very proud – this is another opportunity to tell our story,” said Elly duPre, Executive of Lighthouse of Broward, winner in Advocacy category. “I really feel like a celebrity,” said Forever Family founder Gia Tutola-Mote, nominated in the Advocacy category.”We see such sad stories everyday. To be able to come together and be recognized as a part of this family and vibe is very appreciated.”

In addition to the seven non-profi t awards, The Publix Community Choice Award was given to one organization selected from nominations submitted for the BankAtlantic Non-Profi t Academy Awards. Over 10,000 votes from the public were cast via text or online. And the Community Choice Award goes to…..Children’s Diagnostic and Treatment Center.

As a parting gift, guests received a sweet chocolate statue brushed in gold sponsored by JM Family Enterprises and were encouraged to save the date for next year – Friday, February 22, 2013. “I’M VERY PROUD – THIS IS ANOTHER OPPORTUNITY TO TELL OUR STORY,” SAID ELLY DUPRE, EXECUTIVE OF LIGHTHOUSE OF BROWARD,

WINNER IN ADVOCACY CATEGORY.

The Marlins have moved 16 miles south, from their long-time home

stadium just south of the Broward-Dade line to their new Marlins Park at the site of the former Orange Bowl west of downtown Miami.

But the re-named Miami Marlins are not cutting back on any of their civic and charitable activities in Broward County,

according to team offi cials.“Even though we have moved a

said. That includes trips to games, donations to schools and

sponsorship of events at schools and

organizations including Boys & Girls Clubs. One recent example

was a “fi eld day” on Feb. 17 at the Marti Huizenga Club, in

Hollywood, of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Broward County. Ex-Marlin

Jeff Conine joined current Marlins Mike Stanton, John Buck and Mark Buehrle in meeting with club members and talking about baseball and the importance of education.

“The Marlins know that everyone wins when they give back to the community, and they understand the importance of programs like the Boys & Girls Clubs,” said Sue Freedman, a Plantation resident who is a member of the Advisory Board of the Marlins Foundation.

The Advisory Board helps the Foundation identify and organize events.

Freedman has been a board member for several years. She and her husband Bruce H. Freedman, a Fort Lauderdale attorney, are long-time Marlins season ticket holders.

She became familiar with the Marlins Foundation through her activity as a fan club member and her work as a director of the Davie unit of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Broward.

The Freedman’s have kept their season tickets, even though the drive is longer.

“There will never be a rain delay, so fans who drive down from here will have a better idea of when they will get home,” Sue Freedman said of the new ball park with its retractable roof.

The Marlins played their fi rst game at Marlins Park on March 6 and beat the University of Miami, 7-6, in a spring training exhibition.

The home opening day for the regular season was April 4 against the St. Louis Cardinals. Links to the schedule and ticket information can be found near the top of Marlins’ home page.

regularly provide information about the Marlins Foundation’s upcoming events and the team’s other community activities.

One popular regular event is a 50/50 raffl e at Wednesday, Friday and Sunday home games.

Each raffl e is coordinated by the Foundation with a South Florida non-profi t organization as name sponsor. The sponsor receives 50 percent of the raffl e proceeds while also spreading awareness about its cause.

Fans have the opportunity to win the remaining 50 percent of the net proceeds.

In 2011 more than $18,000 was raised by participating charities.

Part of the Marlins Foundation’s work is pursuing partnerships with arts programs and museums, with a goal of enhancing the lives and learning of children and adults.

The Marlins also are active in the community through Marlins Ayudan, a volunteer program for its front offi ce employees.

All employees must participate, and are known as the blue-tee shirt brigade at events. Many participate at team-sponsored events at schools or for providing services for the needy, said Angela Smith, the Marlins’ director of Community Outreach,

Marlin players, as part of an

agreement with Major League Baseball, must participate in designated numbers of team-sponsored events during the season and during the off-season.

Event sponsors will fi nd that most players enjoy the events, according to team offi cials.

One annual event for employees takes place every Thanksgiving season at Jubilee Center of South Broward, a soup kitchen in Hollywood.

Last Nov. 22, members of the Marlins C o m m u n i t y O u t r e a c h and Marlins Foundation spent the day at Jubilee Center. They helped serve 100 meals and helped pack 50 T h a n k s g i v i n g meals, including turkeys, for distribution to needy families.

The Marlins’ community work has evolved along with the team.

From its fi rst season in 1993 through last year the team was known as the Florida Marlins and played at the Miami Gardens stadium originally known as Joe Robbie Stadium. Following four name changes, and variations, it is now

Sun Life Stadium.Wayne Huizenga, who owned the

team from its inception through 1999, lives in Fort Lauderdale and the businesses he has led are known for their civic and charitable work. Under his ownership, the Marlins carried out those activities under the team’s name as part of Huizenga’s sports enterprises that then included the Miami Dolphins

and the stadium.Huizenga sold the Marlins to John

Henry in 1999. That year, Henry founded the Florida Marlins Community Foundation.

In 2002, Henry sold the team to Jeffrey Loria who has continued and expanded the work of the foundation—under its original name and now as the Marlins Foundation.

Nancy Werter-Winn exemplifi es the kind of sparkle that changes a room. 13 years ago she was charged with beginning and driving the fundraising for The Pap Corps Cancer Research Valencia Lakes Chapter in her community. She became president of the chapter two years later. In 2005, she was elected to the Pap Executive Board as vice president of Pap Friends of Sylvester. She currently serves as Co-VP New Chapter Advisory which is instrumental in helping other chapters begin. She also serves as chairperson of Pap Friends and Founders which raises donations from $10,000 and above.

Nancy’s 25 years at The Miami Herald gained her an enviable reputation as a take charge business woman. Her dynamic personality has been an integral part of helping The Pap Corps volunteers raise funds over the years. Her creative nature has assisted chapters in raising additional funds. With no executive salaries, she and the other 21,000 men and women volunteers have donated more than $29 million for cancer research in the last 10 years. These funds support research at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, South Florida’s only university-based cancer center – breakthrough research dedicated to fi nding cures for all types of cancers that affect men, women and children. There are more than 50 chapters located in Broward, Palm Beach and Miami Dade counties all working for the same vision – To Imagine – and help create – a World without Cancer.

“One of the most diffi cult things about learning you have cancer is feeling good about the next steps you take. Who do I call? Where do I go for treatment? It’s so personal. You need a positive attitude and it’s a scary time. One of the most unique benefi ts of being a Pap Corps Member is The Physician Referral Program” states Nancy. “There are patient advocates who

will try to expedite your access to UHealth physicians. These advocates will do their best to get you an appointment in a timely manner.”

The Pap Corps offers many ways for contributors to support

its mission. There’s even a high school program. West Boca High School Club of the Pap Corps was the fi rst high school to become involved. This is the prototype that will be followed by

other high schools choosing to open a Pap Corps Club. Ashley Rocque, whose grandmother Faith Book is president of Boca West Chapter, volunteered to open a Pap Chapter in her school. Ashley, along with approximately 35 students, and still growing, formed the Club. The Club is a wonderful way for teens to learn the meaning of “giving back” to the community while earning community service credits for their college resumes.

Joining The Pap Corp is not only about fundraising for the mission. Members develop long lasting friendships; they are able to bring their own skills and be part of something that they create in their own communities.

“This year is the 60th birthday of The Pap Corps. We have so many things to celebrate while we still strive to accomplish more” says Nancy Werter-Winn. “We are

looking for volunteers of all ages to join us. You can be as involved as you’d like depending upon your own schedule. There are no minimum or maximum requirements. The Pap Corps is just a call away when you’re ready!”

“When you hear the words…Cancer…there’s a place to begin” says Nancy. “It’s right here in your backyard.”

From screening and diagnosis to treatment and follow up, Sylvester at Deerfi eld Beach provides complete cancer care to patients in Broward and Palm Beach counties. Part of Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center/UMHC—University of Miami Hospital & Clinics, the facility has a team of more than 30 cancer specialists offering multidisciplinary care in 14 of Sylvester’s site disease groups.

To become involved or make a donation to The Pap Corps, visit www.papcorps.org or call 954-425-8100. Email the Administrative Offi ce at [email protected].

Pine Crest School’s fi fth President Dr. Dana Markham brings a dynamic blend of tradition and innovation to one of South Florida’s oldest independent private schools. While some school leaders must navigate a steep learning curve to interpret a school’s culture and climate, Markham took the helm doing what she has done for more than 23 years - greeting students, families and faculty with academic expertise and sincerity.

Markham, who has served years as a teacher, middle school head, and academic dean, received the medallion of offi ce in a formal investiture ceremony at Pine Crest’s Fort Lauderdale campus in mid-March. The celebration, which took place on Pine Crest’s new state-of-the-art Upper School campus, underscored her vision to prepare students to become leaders of the future, to learn collaboratively, and to create solutions when no answer is readily available.

“From an early age, our students learn how to interpret challenges that may be ahead, how to adapt

to those challenges, and how to collaboratively communicate the next step,” said Markham. “Pine Crest students learn to think critically and quickly, and to draw upon ideas from different disciplines.”

Markham said children of families who invest in a Pine Crest education will receive rigorous academic instruction, as well as comprehensive athletics and fi ne arts programs for which the 78-year-old school always has been known. From the moment new students enter their classroom, parents realize that the value of a Pine Crest education is defi ned by the combination of traditional

excellence and innovative approaches to learning that go “beyond the book.”

Markham’s vision is apparent in her expectations for faculty to incorporate technology education, cultural sophistication and leadership in all grades. In the fall of 2011, students as young as four and fi ve began to use iPads during academic instruction, fi fth graders have designed business expos, and Upper School students have gone beyond their AP courses to present scientifi c research fi ndings to medical doctors and university professors.

Markham said she is always pleased to invite families to visit Pine Crest’s Boca Raton campus which serves grades

pre-K – 8; and Fort Lauderdale campus, which serves grades pre-K -12, to experience fi rst-hand the value of a Pine Crest education.

“I have watched and worked with generations of parents and their children, many starting out as exuberant four-year-olds who leave us as confi dent, college-bound young adults” said Markham. “A Pine Crest education creates opportunities for our students to learn a very different skill set from those of prior generations. Every unique facet of our school community and climate encourages our students to become outstanding citizens equipped to thrive in this 21st century world.”

Dog Trainer and Author Lisa Hartman is no stranger to helping animals, and her new book is no exception. Best known as a Dog Trainer and Pet Expert in South Florida and “The Hamptons”, New York, she is also an Author (“DIAL A DYNAMITE DOG: The Ultimate Field Guide for Training Your Pet”), and an accomplished pet photographer with her work appearing in many pet publications and pet products. She is regularly seen on television and in magazines giving pet advice, and has worked and volunteered for many rescue organizations here and in New York as well. With her soon to be re-leased “Hampton Dogs” and now “Florida Companions” she decided to marry all of her talents and put the fun in FUNdraising.

“It will also be “raising” awareness to specifi c issues facing Florida pets and the work of animal advocacy groups here” Lisa says of her new book. “From dog res-cues to therapy dogs, dock diving and canine frisbee, there are plenty of ways your pet can make a difference and have a better quality of life in Florida. Some people are still not aware that you can adopt a purebred dog. I have two gorgeous purebreds, a Dalmatian and a Chi-nese Crested. They have both appeared on magazine and book covers and create quite a stir walking down the street. I am still amazed that people don’t believe I rescued them. But I think all animals are beautiful, and fully believe great companions are made, not born, whether purebred or a mixed breed.”

Like Hampton Dogs, Florida Companions is a beauti-ful, full color coffee table book that people can have their pets participate in, and have their stories told. “What’s more, nobody would throw away a book fea-turing their animal, so the mission of these advocacy groups will always be at pet owners fi ngertips, and the pictures and stories of pets enjoying life in Florida even if from humble beginnings is priceless.”

Here’s how it works: For $700.00 your pet receives a photo shoot in the Southeast Florida location of your choice, a full page photograph in Florida Companions with their profi le or rescue story, and you receive a copy of the book. Pets do not have to be rescues but proceeds from the book as well as fundraising events benefi t local animal organizations.

For more information on having your pet included please contact Lisa Hartman at [email protected], www.LisaTheDogTrainer.com!

4 ICONTROL FERRARIOwning a Ferrari is probably every guy’s dream and that dream stays with us the rest

of our lives. Unfortunately, for just about 99% of us, that dream remains a dream.

So while we may never get to own a real Ferrari, that doesn’t mean we can’t own a remote controlled one. The iControl Ferrari is a 1:50th scale replica of the exotic Ferrari Enzo supercar that the “99%” of us can afford.

The iControl Ferrari Enzo RC car doesn’t work like a traditional radio controlled car; instead of using a remote control, it relies on a “dongle” that plugs into an iPhone, iPod, or an iPad. Download the free App and when you start the car up, your phone will make an engine starting sound. The App will display a picture of a steering wheel and you steer the RC Ferrari by tilting the phone left and right, just like a real car’s steering wheel.

We’ve tried and it is very cool. Is it the real thing? No. But, it will have to do—for now anyway.Cost: $39.50 (taxes and tags included). . For retailers, search the web for iControl Ferrari.

Spain is the land of romance, history, diverse culture and amazing oddities. From bullfi ghts to Gaudi to dancing the night away on Ibiza, travelers could easily spend a year

exploring beautiful cultural Spain. Recently SitInMySeats VIP Tickets & Travel took 30 VIP clients on a private tour to see everything from lush, green forests and mountain ranges, through to endless arid plains and long, sandy beaches. Spain, absolutely amazing!

Laura Hildenbrandt, Director of Travel Sales & Marketing has traveled extensively during the past two decades but rates Catalonia at the very top of her list of places to put on your bucket list. According to Laura, “spending a few days in this amazing seaside region of Spain is only the “tip of the iceberg.”

The capital of Catalonia is Barcelona, a coastal city oozing with charm. From the moment you take the fi rst breath of Barcelona air, you are captivated by the mystery. The very old, the very traditional, the very new, and the very eclectic collide to make the city itself a fi esta for your senses! The glistening Mediterranean Sea laps against the coast of this amazing city keeping a constant “on a tropical holiday feel” even as you’re hustling down a busy street. Barcelona embodies all of the interesting little oddities of Spain with ancient streets perfect for people watching.

If architecture is your thing, Barcelona is a gem. Antoni Gaudi lived and worked in Barcelona. Gaudi is best known for his drip like architecture. His distinctive and highly individual style can best be seen in his still

un-completed masterpiece, Sagrada Familia, the church he was unable to fi nish before his death. Started in 1882, construction continues to this very day. His strange work will make you stare with wonder!

While the city is constantly being modernized, Barcelona retains its historic charm and fl avor. You will fall in love with Ciutat Vella, “old city” that lies at the heart of Barcelona. You will see signs of Roman architectural structures and walls as you take a step back in time in the most popular meeting point in all of Catalonia.

As most travelers know, the best way to get to know the culture of any place is to eat your way through it. This is especially true in Barcelona, the epicenter of Catalonia. Perhaps it’s because Catalan food is such a good refl ection of the culture. The cuisine is simultaneously sophisticated and unpretentious, much like the Catalans themselves. A favorite of Laura Hildenbrandt’s was the pan con tomate, bread rubbed with tomato, garlic and olive oil. In Laura’s words, “Delicioso! No matter how hard I try I just cannot duplicate the recipe! I miss Catalonia more and more each day!”

Offering luxurious accommodations, eclectic and charming people, unbelievable cuisine, and a climate that beckons you to stay, Barcelona will delight and surprise even the most seasoned world traveler. Keep in mind, however, that it will be very, very hard to leave once you are “Captivated by Catalonia!”

The goal of eradicating polio is near at hand. There has only been one case reported in India in the last 12 months. Now only three more countries remain where completing the vaccination programs will make this dreaded disease just a painful memory.

Rotary club members volunteer to work, donate, solicit sponsors and raise money to help improve the lives of the less fortunate in our community, our country and the world. Locally, the Rotary Club of Weston set new records at its 14th Annual Run for Tomorrow and Get Fit Festival with 1,700 runners and walkers, over 10 fi tness partners and the Mayor’s Challenge was won by the Imagine Charter School. Proceeds from this event go to support the Get Fit After School Program to teach elementary school students good eating habits, exercise and the value of a healthful lifestyle; the Rotary

Charities and the Rotary Foundation. The Rotary Club not only supports

many worthy causes with fi nancial support but with hands-on projects such as the Food Coop, Harvest Drive, Susan B Anthony, the Veteran Administration Facility in Pembroke Pines, Salute A Marine and InSync with Autism to name a few.

Looking forward, members of the club are hard at work to raise money for the 25th Annual Rotary Scholarship Golf Classic called the WestonLawyers.Com Golf Classic after our title sponsor to be held on April 2, 2012 at the Weston Hills Country Club. 100% of the proceeds go to provide approximately 50 scholarships each year for worthy and needy college bound students from Cypress Bay and Western High Schools.

While Rotary International celebrates 107 years, the Rotary Club of

Weston celebrates its 25th Anniversary. It’s 120 members are business owners, professionals and senior management who wish to make a difference by serving our community. We invite you join us! We meet every Thursday morning at 7:30 AM to 8:45 AM at the Weston Hills CC. If you are not able to join us at this time, please consider helping us with a donation of money or goods that can be used towards any one of our many causes that we support.

Thank you! Together we do make a difference!

If you would like more information, please contact me (Chuck Yeh) at 954-401-4746 or [email protected] or any Weston Rotarian. And, for our latest happenings, be sure to check out our club website at www.WestonRotary.org, and the “Rotary Club of Weston” Fan Page on FaceBook.

DIVORCE IS NOT WHAT IT’S CRACKED UP TO BE. It’s hardly ever “simple.” While most people that endure such a diffi cult time in their lives don’t necessarily expect the process to be quick, many people underestimate what is necessary for it to conclude sooner than later. The major purpose of this article is to assist others in reaching a greater understanding of the divorce process in Florida and to share some wisdom of what you may do to save money and time if you are going through a divorce or a post-divorce issue.

First and foremost, there are NO guarantees. I highlight that on every contract. You can have the facts, case law and a great attorney on your side and still obtain a negative ruling. Secondly, neither you or your attorney can accurately predict what and when the other side will do EVEN when the law requires an action to be done by a certain time. Once a petition for divorce (Dissolution) is fi led, the other side has 20 days to answer. If you are seeking alimony, you must specifi cally request it in a pleading. If you cannot settle your issues, you must go to Mediation. Discovery (production and review of documents that is

exchanged between the parties along with taking sworn testimony of witnesses) can be lengthy depending on the complexity and amount of the issues. I have one case where the other side has made over 18 requests for documents from my client in a matter that is not complex! I typically estimate that the time to get to trial in most matters is between 6 and 12 months. Where both parties are cooperative, the time and money spent is much less than otherwise.

What can you do to reduce your costs? The easiest solution is to settle early. The dilemma often is while most litigants want a quick fi nish, the gap between the husband and wife is simply too great on the heels of the inception of the divorce proceeding to be bridged rapidly. If you cannot reach a quick agreement on some or all issues, your next best step to save money, time and heartache is to brace yourself for the litigation process and BE PATIENT with the process. The more patient you are, the more you will allow your attorney to focus on the next steps and not bill you for the time that may have been spent addressing your frustration. However, do not be afraid to ask questions and seek understanding from your attorney. You will also benefi t from being completely honest and open with your attorney about your differences with your spouse as well as any mistakes you made that may be relevant to the proceeding.

IF you have read the book “The Road Less Travelled,” you know it

begins with something like this: “Life is diffi cult. Once you accept that premise, life becomes much easier.” Divorce is like life. Divorce is diffi cult. Once you accept that premise, divorce becomes much less diffi cult. Be agile during your divorce and you will encounter fewer negative surprises. Focus on solutions with your lawyer, even if the solution is trial. Don’t waffl e. Obtain the information you feel you need, make your best settlement offer and prepare yourself for trial if your best settlement offer is rejected.

Review the attorney’s bills and hold him or her accountable for the service they promised you. Don’t wait for your attorney to get back with you. In the new high tech age, all it takes is one clever hacker to invade your business network which can lead to a data breach causing massive consequences and fi nancial implications for your organization. While ongoing advances in technology and cutting edge systems help businesses work more effi ciently and obtain greater gains, these innovations leave South Florida businesses of all sizes more vulnerable to cyber liability and new risks.

To date, there have been an extreme number of security breaches in the South Florida area where businesses were

not covered for unauthorized purchases from stolen credit card numbers, identity theft and other liability exposures.

Having a Cyber Liability Insurance or data protection plan is one way organizations can be covered for these exposures regarding possession of data and is a must for all businesses. Whether your company uses the computers and the internet to communicate with others (email, blogs, etc.) collect and store information, or uses its website to conduct customer’s transactions you have important Cyber Liability risks to consider. Cyber Liability Insurance is important for any company who maintains a website, conducts business via the internet, accepts payment via the website, or stores non-public client and/or employee information within a network.

Claims covered by Cyber Liability Insurance can vary widely in terms of nature and severity. For example, a hacker can penetrate a retailer’s network, steal credit card information and use that information to make purchases. The cardholder could sue the retailer to recover their cost to repair credit, discharge fraudulent loans and seek damages from emotional stress. Without proper coverage, businesses are putting themselves in danger. Having the proper Cyber Liability Insurance

can prevent that from happening.Claims can also include

incidents such as an employee at a web development company who defeats his company’s security defenses to gain access to a customer’s trade secret. The employee then sells the trade secret to the company’s competitor. The customer sues the web company for lost profi ts resulting from the company’s failure to protect its trade secret. If the organization has a Cyber Liability Insurance policy, the plan will provide coverage for this incident, settlement costs and any other notifi cation expenses.

Be authentic. Say something different from your competitors. Disrupt categories. Be clever, simple, and memorable.

Make it easy for customers to tell their friends. Get them to wear it, auction it, trade it, and collect it. Make them name a pet after it. Travel, lie, and bleed, save, cry, and stay up all night for it. These are the feelings and behaviors that people will happily engage in if they LOVE your brand. But how, you ask, do you get a segment of the masses to be loyalists? You must have strong beliefs and you have to communicate them with the goal of fi nding others that share in those same beliefs. This is Marketing 101.

BUT THIS THE REALM OF BIG BRANDS WITH LOTS OF MONEY YOU SAY?

Hardly.While it’s true

that big brands usually have lots of money to distribute their message, they must still engage in the fundamentals.

And this is what always separates the good from the great in nearly all aspects of life, not just branding. Take sports for instance. On the most basic level, the fundamentals of any particular sport must be mastered before advancing onto the next level where you are free to create. Think about some small businesses you might know and how they advertise, or what their message is, or how their corporate identity (logo) is presented. Then, think about some

of the top brands in the market and look at those same things. Often, they are worlds apart in terms of quality, conciseness, and effectiveness in meeting their strategy, if the small business even has one at all. It’s like Pee Wee League versus Major League. But here is the point. Big or small, all businesses can engage in and master the fundamentals. They are linear; they build upon each other and are essential if you want to occupy a portion of hearts and minds.

THE MOST IMPORTANT STEP IS HAVING A STRATEGY.

Just having pretty pictures and funny words isn’t enough, having a positioning strategy is key. What segment of the market are you targeting? Is there

currently a category leader? If so, how

will your message be different from theirs? What is your pricing strategy? Do you plan on being the premium

priced brand or the cheap Charlie? Is your product or service targeted to men or women or both? These considerations, and more, must be addressed at the outset as this strategy will be your north star in

everything that follows.Leonardo DaVinci said,

“Simplicity is the ultimate form of sophistication.” This edict should be your guiding light when designing corporate identity, collateral, and advertising. Sometimes visually complex, overly designed elements are required, but the human brain is really only able to remember simple visuals so keeping it simple is ideal. Your message, which should be born from your brand’s beliefs, will also benefi t from simplicity, but

above all, be memorable. Branding is not an overnight activity, rather, an ever-evolving activity that requires time, imagination and creativity. If you want people to really LOVE your brand, you have to work at it.

Preventing colon cancer may be easier than you think. Most cases of colon cancer can be prevented by having a screening colonoscopy. Colon cancer is one of few diseases where normal body tissue - in this case, polyps - actually turns deadly. Removing nonmalignant polyps during a colonoscopy procedure may prevent colon cancer from developing. Colon cancer is one of the most prevalent cancers in the US. It is also an equal opportunity destroyer, oblivious to gender, race or income. People at increased risk for colon cancer include those with one or more immediate relatives with the disease, an inherited tendency to form polyps, a long history of ulcerative colitis, or a history of breast or uterine cancer. However, they are in the minority. The disease occurs most often in those who least expect it.

According to Steven Wexner, MD, chief academic offi cer and chair of

Colorectal Surgery at Cleveland Clinic Florida, “Colonoscopy is considered the gold standard test for detecting and eliminating polyps. Other tests are simply less effective.”

SIGMOIDOSCOPY: Only checks the lower portion of the colon.HEMOCCULT TEST: Detects blood in the stool, but is often inaccurate, giving false negative reports to at least 50% of patients with colon cancer and false positive reports to many patients who do not have the disease. A positive barium enema requires a colonoscopy follow up.VIRTUAL COLONOSCOPY: Might be a substitute some day, but is now unaffordable. For this reason, it is now recommended by every major gastrointestinal society that both men and women have a screening colonoscopy at age 50. Anyone at increased risk should be screened by age 40 - earlier in some cases. The need for future screening tests is determined by the fi ndings at the fi rst screening as well as the patient’s risk factors. Some symptoms of colon cancer include blood in the stool and pain the lower abdomen. More than half of all people diagnosed with colon cancer have no symptoms at all, so it is simply not wise to wait for the appearance of symptoms. Do yourself a favor and

schedule a colonoscopy today. It just might save your life. Cleveland Clinic Florida’s

Digestive Disease team is comprised of colorectal surgeons, gastroenterologists, general surgeons and other specialists. They work collaboratively, in order to provide the most accurate diagnosis and individualized treatment plans for conditions such as colon cancer, irritable bowel syndrome, Crohn’s and Colitis, liver and pancreatic cancers, as well as many others. This team effort allows for the best outcome in patient care. For a consultation, please call 1.800.639.DOCTOR, or for a free colon cancer risk assessment, visit clevelandclinicfl orida.org.

Celebrating its second anniversary on Las Olas Boulevard in downtown Fort Lauderdale, SoLita Italian Restaurant &

The Parlor Lounge consistently continues to Tempt, Taste and Indulge diners with delectable home-cooked Italian culinary creations –

including old favorites and new creative dishes. This authentic Ft. Lauderdale hot spot is a “must try” for those looking to savor the most fl avorful, traditional Italian specialties in a chic, stylish and electrifying atmosphere overfl owing with celebrities, sport stars and local notables.

During our recent visit to SoLita, my party of four was quickly seated by the gracious host and we were happy to see that all of the tables were fi lled. We chose to start our meal with a

delightful Caymus Cabernet and a selection of appetizers for the table to share. Our waiter suggested we start with the SoLita house made meatballs with fresh tomato and basil sauce and ricotta cheese and the Shrimp SoLita, crispy shrimp tossed

with roasted peppers, extra virgin olive oil with a pesto verde drizzle. Not knowing that would be more than enough, we also chose an order of Fried Calamari. All of the dishes were so delicious, we wanted more, but also couldn’t wait to experience what the main courses had to offer. We weren’t sure if we still needed the Grilled Caesar Salad that we had ordered, but once we took the fi rst taste of the fork and knife grilled romaine drizzled with homemade caesar dressing, we were really glad that we had indulged.

For entrees, I ordered the Rib Eye Pizzaiola which was perfectly grilled and topped with sautéed sweet peppers and onions in a fresh tomato sauce. One of my guests could not stop raving about the Whole Roasted Bronzini which was nicely seasoned and stuffed with parsley, tomato, red onions, artichoke, drizzled with extra virgin olive oil, aged balsamic and lemon. My other dining partners chose to share the Veal Chop Milanese – which was perfectly cooked - bone in, pounded thin and lightly breaded, with a delicious mix of salad greens, tomatoes and red onion with a balsamic vinaigrette and a delightful Shrimp Risotto which was topped with mounds of shrimp

Offering of the Angels is curated by Antonio Natali, director the world-renowned Uffi zi Gallery in Florence, Italy, and features

tapestries and paintings by some of the greatest artists of the Renaissance and Baroque periods, including Sandro Botticelli, Parmigianino, Alessandro Allori, Luca Giordano, and Lorenzo Monaco, among many others. The exhibition’s forty-fi ve works portray scenes from the Old Testament, including the Creation of Adam, the Expulsion from the Garden of Eden, the Miracle of the Manna, as well as events from the life of Christ, including the Annunciation, the Nativity, the Rest on the Flight into Egypt, the Last Supper, the Crucifi xion, and the Resurrection. Tying together all the subjects is the theme of forgiveness.

Irvin Lippman, the Executive Director of the Museum of Art, said that “Offering of the Angels brings to the Museum of Art and to South Florida a wealth of tapestries and old master paintings that are rarely, if ever, seen in this region. We welcome the generosity of the Uffi zi Gallery in allowing these treasures to travel here. The exhibition’s impressive works of art refl ect, in their fullest expression, the highest points of artistic achievement of Western Civilization.”

The Uffi zi Gallery is one of the oldest and most famous art museums in the world. It is housed in an impressive structure erected between 1560 and 1574

by Cosimo I de’Medici and designed by Giorgio Vasari, a friend of Michelangelo who coined the term Renaissance. It contains one of the greatest collections of paintings and tapestries – many of which were originally commissioned or owned by members of the powerful Medici family.

Offering of the Angels has come to the United States – and premieres at the Museum of Art I Fort Lauderdale – through the efforts and encouragement of the Amici degli Uffi zi, which was established in 1993 to support the Uffi zi Gallery and its programs.

BY BRUCE TURKEL

AND another thing...

THE FUTURE STARTED YESTERDAY

My daughter sent her college applications out a couple of months ago and is waiting for her acceptance letters to arrive in the mail. So far she’s received six green lights and no turndowns so I’m proud to report she’s six for six.

She wrote her college application essays about her love of photography and the environment. She talked about taking her camera, nicknamed Nick Canon (it’s a Canon SLR, get it?) on nature hikes and how she’s going to choose her school not just for its academic offering but also for its natural surrounds.

Yesterday she texted me a copy of the acceptance letter she received from one of the schools. In the margins of the laser printed form letter an admissions counselor scrawled in longhand, “You and Nick Canon are going to enjoy the scenery at ABC College.”

How smart is that? Not only does the customized letter show that someone at ABC College actually read her essay and paid attention, but those 12 words also created all kinds of warm and fuzzies. In an instant, a school that was in the bottom half of her desirability list leapfrogged to the top three.

Scientists have been researching why users are so addicted to their smartphones and Blackberries (it’s no surprise they’re called “Crackberries”). What they’ve found is that every little “ding” stimulates a shot of dopamine into the bloodstream of the users. You can almost hear Sally Field exclaim, “You like me. You really like me” every time the phone rings. It’s such a powerful charge that Apple has recently exploited it further with the iPhone 4S’ Siri app. Each time the phone does your bidding and answers affi rmatively with your name, it’s a satisfying and fulfi lling experience.

Social networking sites that send you an email when someone posts your photo. Restaurateurs who bring you a complimentary amuse-boche or after dinner drink. Beautifully designed products that make you smile each time you look at them. Doctors and nurses who take a little extra time to sit and talk with you about your health and your lifestyle. People who use your name when they speak to you. Pets that love you unconditionally.

Each of these uncommon

delights gives us a little “Atta boy” or “Atta girl” that reminds us that we matter. Each one makes us feel good about ourselves. Each one makes us want to go back for more.

Thanks to computerization and technology, most products we buy are very good at doing what they’re supposed to do. For example, when was the last time you had a television set break? TVs have become so reliable that the industry had to invent entirely new types of TVs — fi rst the fl at screen and when those became ubiquitous, 3D TVs — just to keep us buying them. Apple is so good at regularly upgrading their products to create desire that you don’t really buy their goods, you subscribe to them. All of a sudden, a product’s popularity isn’t just measured by its functionality, but by how that product makes us feel about ourselves. If we feel welcomed, pampered, pleased, delighted, we buy. If we feel validated, we buy a lot.

I don’t think most people like rats. They can be dirty, dangerous, and destructive. Throughout history the rodents have carried numerous diseases and have been responsible for countless human suffering through plagues and pestilence. Just a glimpse of the rodents’ beady little eyes, gruff gray fur, and scrabbly-skinny tails provokes fear and loathing.

According to Wikipedia, “rodents have sharp incisors that they use to gnaw wood, break into food, and bite predators.” And the family of common rodents includes not just rats but mice, porcupines, beavers, guinea pigs, hamsters, and squirrels as well. That means that squirrels and rats are related. So why do people hate rats but think squirrels are cute?

It’s the distinct differences between the two that make all the difference. While rats have those nasty, scaly tails,

squirrels have broad, fl uffy ones. Rats look matted and mangy. Squirrels have thick, luxuriant fur. A park

full of squirrels is delightful. A park full of rats? Disgusting! Rats have beady eyes. Squirrels have big, shiny eyes. In fact, the dimensions of a squirrel’s face are similar to that of a human baby.

In other words, rats gross us out while squirrels bring out our maternal and paternal instincts and make us feel good

about ourselves. And therefore, them.So has evolution crowned squirrels

as the original branding gurus? You’ve never heard anyone described as a “dirty

squirrel,” have you? How about a “squirrel fi nk”? No one’s ever “squirreled out a friend,”

have they? And when was the last time a bad situation was described as “squirrels deserting a sinking ship”?

No, it’s the rats that got the bad rap. And the squirrels — like other savvy creatures,

colleges, and companies — get all the peanuts.
