hat’s the source of that deep feeling of inner satisfaction? When
are we at our best? When people are up against the wall and it would be easy for them to throw their hands up in defeat, time and again we see them rise to the challenges and find a way forward. Whether it’s the devastation of national disasters (9/11, Katrina, Joplin, etc.) or personal experiences (death, injury, disease, financial hardships, etc.) we see countless examples of the ability to look past the problem and focus on the solution. At the darkest
times our survival instinct kicks into gear and we move to a higher level of energy and awareness. Adversity = Opportunity. All that’s needed is deter-mination and a focus on creative solutions. We are all moved by stories of overcoming adversity. There are entire indus-tries that thrive on it. YouTube is full of inspiring videos of individual tri-umph over the odds. What is it that allows an individual, who for all intents and purposes had little chance to succeed, to thrive and accomplish the seemingly impossible. Last years telecast of CNN Heroes was an emotional rollercoaster. The ability to see a problem and apply a creative solution to resolve it seems incredible on this scale. The scale isn’t the real issue though it’s the deep need to make a difference. Global, National, Local or personal it’s really all the same. Our creative capacity to find a solution is only lim-ited by our imagination and determination to do so. Sometimes we need a negative prod to progress in order to shake off our complacency and move ahead. The
last few years have brought some of the biggest challenges of my life. I have developed a deep sense of appreciation and gratitude for the ease and comfort that I have experienced. As my fi-nancial world turned upside down I have been challenged to sink or swim. It hasn’t been pretty but I have learned so much about myself and abilities that I had been unaware of or just never developed. I am at heart a person that enjoys the process of finding solutions. The recent adverse economy has brought out a creative side of me that has enriched my life experience. I have to include in my appreciation and gratitude the dif-ficulties that have forced me to get creative and find solutions.

Kehinde Wiley is inspired by European traditionalist portraits by painters the l ikes of Reynolds, Gainsborough, Titian and Ingres to name a few. Wiley, often will show, the person that is sitting for one of his paintings, a collection of specifically selected paintings as a starting point. In this approach, he involves the sitter in the creative process. The Columbus Museum of Art, which hosted an exhibition of his work in 2007, described his work in the following way; "Kehinde Wiley has gained recent acclaim for his heroic portraits which address the image and status of young A f r i c a n - A m e r i c a n m e n i n c o n t e m p o r a r y c u l t u r e . " Born in South Central Los Angeles, Wiley takes his inspiration from what he sees on the streets. His portraits, often are inspired with young urban men from streets of New York and LA. Wiley’s unique style often blurs the lines between traditional and contemporary presentations. His references to Old Dutch Masters, French Rococo and Islamic Moorish influences combined with West African Textiles and American Urban Hip-Hop all merged into larger than life grandeur.
