Chairman’s Message

It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to Cork Craft Month on behalf of the board and members of Cork Craft and Design. I am delighted to present our programme of events for Craft Month 2014. This year, makers from all over Cork County and City join us in celebrating our ffifth annual event, now a ffirm ffixture in Cork’s creative calendar. Our programme of 2014

events is brought to you by our diverse makers and the combined efforts of our board and other volunteers.

Our growing festival of events spans both the city and county with more events this year than ever before. There is an abundance of talented craftspeople using their ingenuity and skills to produce exquisite craft products all across the county of Cork and as we work towards the ‘Year of Irish Design 2015 ’ we invite you to join with us in celebrating the diversity of craft available to view, buy and experience in Cork.

Cork Craft Month is not just a celebration of craft and its people, it’s also a vehicle to help ensure that we continue to preserve, encourage and nurture the special skills of the people working in the craft sector in Ireland today. All craftwork contains a very valuable ingredient, time: we hope that you will take some of your precious time, to attend our exhibitions, workshops, open studio days and retail outlets during Craft Month. I can assure you, it will be time well spent.

With best regards, Tony Farrell - woodturnerChairman of Cork Craft and Design 2014

Core Events 2014Cork Craft & Design is a voluntary organisation that brings together craft makers from all over Cork city and county. This is the fifth year that we are working with talented makers from all over Cork; providing you with great opportunities to see, touch and purchase some the very best craft being produced in Ireland today. Here is a list of our ‘Core Events’ for 2014 – a very special collection of events that represent our makers across many craft disciplines.

A highlight of Cork Craft Month and Cork’s creative calendar, promoting both established and emerging makers. This year’s exhibition highlights the inspirations that have compelled craftspeople to create their work, while focusing on craft objects that display a respect and understanding for materials combined with technical ability. This event was curated by Steven Mc Namara of Roji Designs.

Established during Cork Craft Month 2013 this exhibition and retail space is a ‘must see’ during Cork Craft Month. Bringing together a diverse rotating collection of Cork Craft & Designs members’ work , why not pop in and meet and talk to the makers working there about their products and inspirations.

A specially selection of work by local craftspeople will be on view in the light and airy setting of the Cork Civic Offices building, behind Corks historic City Hall. This eclectic mix of work will include locally made furniture, woodturning and sculptural pieces.

An extra special ‘pop up’ craft event featuring an eclectic selection of work by Cork Craft & Designs members. A haven of handmade items for the home, this event will include furniture, textiles, ceramics, woodturning and framed pieces to suit all budgets and tastes. This is your ideal opportunity to pick up a locally made item to enhance your home or an extra special gift for someone else’s home.

“Tea & Twitter” To celebrate Cork Craft Month in August Etain Hickey asked a group of makers to interpret the theme “Tea & Twitter” which has resulted in a wonderful whimsical exhibition. Cork based textile artists Carmel Creaner and Lesley Stothers are well known for their domestic themed work. Martha Cashman is showing her porcelain teaspoons and Catherine Ryan has interpreted the theme with a hand felted tea set. Internationally known Wendy Kershaw has produced more of her quirky tea themed wall ceramics and our last two artists Diane McCormick and Susan O’Byrne have concentrated on the “twitter”!
