ANNUAL REPORT

Page 2: Cornell Plantations 2012 Annual Report

As Cornell Plantations celebrates its 68th year, we are excited to offer you a new kind of annual report—a video in which you can see and hear about some of the important things we have accomplished this year. Some of our more notable recent accomplishments include:

• Led the Cornell Gorge Safety Task Force.

• Received $880,000 grant from FEMA for the Cascadilla Gorge

restoration project. Completed Phase I of Fall Creek Gorge trail and safety improvements. Combined Cornell University and Federal capital repair funding for both gorge projects totals $3,250,000.

• Treated 300 hemlock trees in key areas to combat Hemlock Wooly

Adelgid and contributed to a campus-wide ash tree inventory to prepare for impact of Emerald Ash Borer.

• Graduated 9 individuals from the Natural Areas Academy, all of whom contribute to the stewardship and protection of our natural heritage.

• Completed construction of a new 14 x 48 ft. hoop house to expand our

in-house plant production efforts.

• Produced all of the mulch and compost we use in the botanical gardens

and arboretum from waste leaves and donated wood chips, saving over $49,000.

• Launched a new environmental education program (PEEPS) for high

school students.

• Created new interpretive signs and a cell phone audio tour for the F. R. Newman Arboretum to help visitors learn more about our valuable collections of trees and shrubs.

• Collaborated with local restaurant chefs to launch the new Garden to Table class series highlighting the culinary uses of plants in our collections.

• Enhanced over 60 courses for Cornell students by facilitating the use of Plantations’ natural areas, horticultural collections, and staff for field trips and guest lectures.

• In our 10th year of partnering with the Ithaca Shakespeare Company, welcomed 3900 visitors to their extraordinary summer performances in the arboretum.

• Celebrated the certification of the Nevin Welcome Center as a LEED Gold building.

• Launched a major fundraising initiative to build and endow a new East Asian Garden and series of Peony and Perennial Gardens.

I hope you will enjoy the video, and thank you for your continued support of Cornell Plantations and our mission.
