We enter another full month of our
Lenten journey this month. Well,
almost – we’ll spend the last four
days in the “son-rise” of Easter. Still,
even with almost a full month, I find
myself pretty pessimistic about how
we honestly observe Lent and what
we honestly get from this time
between Ash Wednesday and Easter
Sunday, these forty days, not
counting Sundays of late Winter and
early Spring.
As is often the case, I may be
revealing more about me and my
family than illuminating anything
about you and yours! You and your
families may be spending this Lent in
deep daily devotionals, sacrifices,

observances, and disciplines. But … I
doubt it.
I have our Denomination’s Lenten book
of devotions, Be Holy, sitting on a
cutting board in our kitchen, and I have
been reading it daily, though I confess
I’m not spending enough time reflecting
on it. I further confess that I’ve not
made it a “family event” in any way.
Someone else may have picked it up and
read a day or two, here and there, but I
don’t think anyone has followed it daily.
It’s so hard with kid’s schedules, wife’s
work, my other obligations … blah,
blah, blah. My educated guess is that
most of you are engaging Lent in similar
ways: With a cursory moment or two
every few days, a more significant
reminder on Sunday morning when we
gather in the Sanctuary, and maybe a
fleeting thought to “fish on Friday.” I
don’t do guilt too well, you know that,
so here’s where I’ll end this month’s
letter – It’s not too late!
We have all but five days (counting
Easter itself) of this whole month to
change the complacent approach to our
preparation for the biggest day of our
whole lives as Christians! Easter will
only be as earth-shattering and life-
changing as our preparations for it
allow. So spend some time this month
wondering: Where in the world are you
experiencing the Holy? (family, friends,
time alone, time itself) How in the world
have you treated the Holy as “less than”

BE HOLY: Our 2016 Daily
Lenten Devotionals from Presbyterians Today magazine
Lent began last month, but it’s not too
late to pick up a Lenten Devotional and
spend a little extra time in scripture and
prayer this year. This year, each day in-
cludes a Scripture passage, a reflection
on what it means to be holy, and a
breath prayer to carry with you through
the day.
From the writer, Brian Coulter: “Lent is
a sacred journey that has been set apart
– a holy journey that we are invited to
take with our holy God.” Walk on ….
Pick up a copy of Be Holy in the
sanctuary or Family Life Center
this month.
SECOND WEDNESDAY IN MARCH
Wednesday Evening – March 9, 5:45 to 6:55 p.m.
After Dinner: Lenten Prayer Stations
On this evening, after we share our common meal, we will have the oppor-
tunity to visit one of many prayer stations that will invite us to pray for dif-
ferent parts of our world and our lives and to do so in many different ways
– from writing, drawing, sculpting, sitting in silence, and more.
Please plan to join us for the only Lenten Meal we will share here this Season.
Call the church office for a dinner reservation: 241-4326.
(continued from page 1)
Holy? (not being available, not considering others, wasting your time) How
might you more fully recognize the Holy in your life? (slow down, share some
devotional time with others, pay attention to “the least” among us). It’s not
too late.
If you’re having trouble tuning in, I know something that will help you
get started … See you in church,
Joel

HOLY WEEK AND EASTER SCHEDULE March 20 – March 27
Every year there are special services and traditions that are a part of the end of
our Lenten season and the celebration of Easter. This year is no exception and
while these dates come late for you in April’s newsletter, we sure hope to see
you on the following dates:
Palm Sunday, March 20: Worship service at 10:30 a.m.
Palm branches will be distributed at both services and our children and youth will
“process.”
Thursday, March 24 : Maundy Thursday Service at 7:00 p.m. in the
Sanctuary
Communion will be served, the lights will fade, and our cross will be shrouded as
we proceed through Good Friday and Black Saturday.
Easter Sunday, March 27: Worship Services at 8:30 a.m. and 11:00
a.m.
Do note the “Special Times!”
On this, our highest Holy Day, we will gather together to flower the cross that
has loomed before us throughout Lent and now stands as our primary promise
of abundant new life for all.
Annual Easter Egg Hunt
Sunday, March 27
Join us on March 27, 2016 for our Annual Easter Egg Hunt! Our older youth will hide eggs filled
with goodies around the church, and our younger disciples will hunt for them all. Check for com-
ing emails, the church Facebook page, and the website for more times and details. Contact Jenna
Heery if you would like to fill eggs in preparation for this event. Hope you can join us! It is always
such meaningful fun, making memories that our children can carry with them through their life-
time!
South Oldham Inter-
church Council Easter

MISSION COLLECTION AT PVPC
Presbyterian Disaster Relief Project : Mid-Kentucky Presbytery
PCUSA churches in Mid Kentucky Presbytery have committed to packing 500 “Disaster Relief Hygiene Kits” for the
Mayor of Louisville’s “Week of Service,” and PVPC wants to help! We want to put together 25 kits and send them in by
April 18th.
Each PDA Hygiene Kit will fit into a one gallon zip lock bag and your Mission Team is asking that you bring in the fol-
lowing items in the month of March and put them in the Gathering Room donation bin:
1 Hand towel (16”x28” – no bath towels!)
1 wash cloth
1 wide tooth comb
1nail clipper
1 bar of soap (bath size in wrapper)
1 toothbrush in original wrapping
6 Band-aids or other adhesive bandage strips
The PCUSA Disaster Assistance office will cover the cost of shipping the hygiene kits to the distribution warehouse in
Arkansas.
Other ways that Churches are participating is by …
1. Praying for the people struggling to survive a disaster.
2. Volunteering to assemble more kits on April 23 at Strathmoor PC. Children welcome!
3. Donate and drop off supplies on April 18.
4. Contribute money to buy needed items.
Thank you for your commitment and love. Call the church office for more information!

CHAPEL SERVICE
WITH THE CHILD DE-
VELOPMENT CENTER
10:00 a. m. Tuesday, March 8th
and Wednesday, March 23rd
We have two chapel services a
month, every month, for the chil-
dren in our care five days week!
Any and all who are able are wel-
come and encouraged to come!
Our time together usually lasts
about twenty minutes and includes
songs, prayers, a sharing from
scripture by Pastor Joel and a cele-
bration of the month’s birthdays.
Love to see you in our sanctuary
with the children!
CDC News!
Happy March! Happy St. Patrick’s Day! Happy Spring! Happy Easter! Wow!
This is definitely going to be a busy month. I hope the ‘ole groundhog was
right and that Spring weather is just around the corner. It’s just not as much
fun hunting Easter eggs in the snow but it has been done. The children had a
blast but the parents—well, not so much.
Some of the fun things going on around here during the month of March in-
clude: a fieldtrip for our 4 year olds to Derby Dinner Playhouse to see
“Charlotte’s Web” on Wednesday, March 2, Chapel with Pastor Joel on the 8th
and the 23th at 10am, St. Patrick’s Day celebrations for everyone on Thursday,
March 17th and Easter celebrations the week of March 21. If anyone has some-
thing interesting to share about their Irish heritage, or any other heritage for
that matter, we would love to have you come and share with the children. Just
call the CDC office at 241-0177 or send an email to [email protected]
and we’ll arrange a time.
Many thanks Jenna Heery for helping to deliver the canned goods the CDC
collected to the Portland Presbyterian Church Food Pantry (congrats to our Jr.
K class for winning the ice cream party)! And also, many thanks to Ron War-
ren for providing the CDC staff with a DELICIOUS soup and sandwich dinner
during our February staff meeting. Your efforts to support the CDC are great-
ly appreciated! Finally, thanks to everyone who has enrolled in the Kroger Plus
Community Rewards program and linked their account to the CDC. I am anx-
iously waiting to see if our enrollment has grown this quarter. I’ll keep you
posted in the next newsletter!
Have a blessed March!
