Director’s Notes

“there is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so.” --Hamlet, Act II, sc iiJohn Steinbeck penned, “A child may ask, “What is the world’s story about?” And a grown man or woman may wonder, “What way

will the world go? How does it end and, while we’re at it, what’s the story about?”Macbeth, is thought to have been first performed in 1606 and dramatizes the physical and psychological effects of ambition on those who seek power for its own sake. There have been countless plays produced since then: how are we still captivated by a play written over 400 years ago? Is it the appeal of the supernatural? Is it the intrigue of unchecked political ambition that resonates with us? Or is it that human nature, in spite of immeasurable advances in technology, medicine, psychology, and the humanities, remains relatively unchanged?Steinbeck goes on to say that he believes that there is one story in the world: “Humans are caught — in their lives, in their thoughts, in their hungers and ambitions, in their avarice and cruelty, and in their kindness and generosity too — in a net of good and evil. There is no other story. A man, after he has brushed off the dust and chips of his life, will have left only the hard, clean questions: Was it good or was it evil? Have I done well — or ill?”In Macbeth, Shakespeare has given us a play about choices. Macbeth and Lady Macbeth are consistently given the opportunity to choose good over evil. Committing murder is not their fate; they are not sociopaths (as their respective consciences reveal to their audience). In fact, the Macbeths are held in high regard at the start of the play by both the king and his kinsmen. It is not until Macbeth is faced with the temptation of more power that he makes the choice ultimately leading

to his demise. To illustrate other another choice made, Shakespeare introduces us to Macbeth’s best friend, Banquo, who is presented with the same temptation and resists it in favor of family. And to drive the point even further, Shakespeare gives us MacDuff whose patriotism and loyalty to the rightful king surpass any ambitious motives. Shakespeare has humanized rather than vilified the murderer. He invites the audience into the mind of Macbeth: we see Macbeth’s doubts, ambitions, desire, and despair. We see the destruction wrought when ambition goes unchecked by moral constraints. Macbeth is a courageous Scottish general who is not naturally inclined to commit evil deeds, yet he deeply desires power and advancement. He kills Duncan against his better judgment and afterward stews in guilt and paranoia. Toward the end of the play he descends into a kind of frantic, boastful madness. Lady Macbeth, on the other hand, pursues her goals with greater determination, yet she is less capable of withstanding the repercussions of her immoral acts. In each case, choice is what drives the couple to ever more terrible atrocities. The problem is that once one decides to use violence to further one’s quest for power, it is difficult to stop. Shakespeare draws this portrait of a murderer with personal, almost empathetic, strokes. We can see ourselves reflected in the choices that Macbeth, Lady Macbeth, Banquo, and Macduff make. In Samuel Johnson’s preface to The Plays of Shakespeare (1765), he wrote that Shakespeare’s “characters … are the genuine progeny of common humanity, such as the world will always supply, and observation will always find.” Over 400 years later, we still find this to be true.

Coronado Playhouse is presenting Macbeth for the first time since 2004, which is the year I joined CPH’s board of directors, when we were down on the Ferry Landing in a tent! We are proud to continue the tradition of the annual classics and grateful we can still offer them free of charge. At CPH, we believe in the transforming power of theatre as told through engaging productions such as Macbeth. Board Member and award-winning director, Desha Crownover has really challenged her team with many clever ideas resulting in a visually stunning version of Macbeth. Adding to it are wonderful background sounds and the underplayed-but-insightful costumes making this production rich with great moments.During our MainStage productions CPH partners with other non-profits to tell

their story and support their causes. Our audiences are very supportive in our mission to help others, and educate the public to other community service organizations. During Macbeth we are raising funds directly for Coronado Playhouse. You can support the Playhouse through donations of any amount by using the envelope in your program, dropping cash or check in the basket as you walk out, or by visiting our friendly box office to donate. Enjoy the perks of being a Coronado Playhouse member, with individual membership starting from as low as $50.We hope you enjoy the show. You will experience ambition, deception and treachery… and yes, you will see blood!Katy Skyrud Managing Theatre Director
