On behalf of the Coronado Playhouse Board of Directors and Staff, WELCOME TO CORONADO PLAYHOUSE! Thank you for being a part of our production of The Old Man and the Old Moon!CPH has a long theatrical tradition. Since 1946, volunteers have put on productions here and have done so continuously for 73 seasons. We thank you for being a part of our great history. To our Members and our Donors, your support helps make this all possible! To our Volunteers, you keep the Playhouse going! In addition, to our Patrons, without you, who would we perform for?We are excited to be finalizing our 2020 season – the announcement will be made at the upcoming 2019 Membership meeting.Since 2013, we have been partnering each productions with a local non-profit charity organization. Our aim is to heighten awareness of these groups and raise funds

to assist in their good works. For our last production, Cabaret we partnered with two groups. A book drive was held for the Coronado Library and we collected funds for the Anti-Defamation League of San Diego. I am proud to report that due to your generosity, several hundred books and CDs were collected and well over $5000 was collected for ADL!Our Charity Partner for The Old Man and the Old Moon is the Emilio Nares Foundation. This fine group supports children and their families going through cancer treatments. Their main area of support is providing transportation for the children to be able to get to their treatments. If not for this service, many of these children would miss their treatments due to the lack of transportation or the long bus rides needed. Please help us help them, as we all give back to our community.Pamela Everett CPH Board Member

“We are debris arrangers. Equipped with what we have inherited, we try to make a life, make a living and make art. We are assemblers. We forge received parts into meaningful compositions. This state of affairs is our plight and our destiny, but it also offers the opportunity to find

meaning as well as to find communion with others.” — Anne BogartI’ve heard it said that all storytelling can be distilled down to two plots: a man takes a journey and a stranger comes to town. Every fable, film, or book whether elaborate or straight-forward can be whittled down to either of these sentences. Whether or not you agree, I think it’s safe to say that most often it’s the way we tell the story that makes it so engaging, and not necessarily the plot itself. Consider these one sentence summaries of famous stories without the power of their narrative:

• A boy befriends a bearded hermit and two robots, goes into space, kisses his sister and kills his dad. (Star Wars)

• Two teenagers fall in love and consequently six people die. (Romeo and Juliet)

• A couple of tiny little blokes take three long books to return a piece of unwanted jewelry (The Lord of the Rings)

• Angsty prince broods, seemingly goes crazy, and kills many, including his uncle, who had killed his father and married his mother. (Hamlet)

• The hero Achilles spends ten years punching people in the face. (The Iliad)

Well-told stories have entertained us, taught us, motivated us, and brought us together as a community for as long as humans have had the power to communicate. What do we need to tell a good story? We need energy.Theatre theorist and stage director, Anne Bogart, in regard to storytelling, says not to underestimate “the role of enthusiasm. If you look at the word enthusiasm etymologically, it means to be filled with God...you can’t fake enthusiasm, it has to be cultivated and

developed. It involves getting to work in your lives and your relationships on the artform the you’re working in, and it’s your job to cultivate that enthusiasm, because without it there are no legs and feet.”

We need imagination. PigPen Theatre, the group who created this beautiful piece, talks about what’s outside of the screen:“There is nothing more interesting than something that is just out of sight. The idea of keeping something just out of sight is central to all great storytelling. Good storytelling provides the audience a space to engage with their imaginations. Every time we open the doors to a new audience, we’re really meeting a new group of collaborators for the first time and the show can change immeasurably depending on what the audience takes or gives to each performance. It’s easy to forget the creative role that an audience can play when it engages with the performance.” We need a reason to tell stories. Storytelling is one of the single most important traditions that human beings participate in. Our enthusiasm and imagination are sparked when we have something important we need to say, and how we say it can be the difference between obsolescence and legacy. Unfortunately, in being transparent in our own personal stories, we run the risk those stories may get twisted and re-told through cynical, suspicious filters; for many, the price of being authentic is ridicule or worse. However, if we are able to overcome these fears, we find that the opposite is also true: the more personal our reasons to share a story, the more universal they become. Storytelling builds bridges that connect us to the best and worst parts of each other. We need collaboration.Storytelling does not work without the storytellers or someone to tell the story to. I am so grateful to have worked with this enthusiastic, imaginative, impassioned group of storytellers. Designers, singers, actors, musicians, and artists have all come together to tell this story in their own way, and we are eager to present it to you, the final element we need to complete this story, our audience. Thank you for collaborating with us and sharing this unique experience. —Desha Crownover
