Welcoming back: Echoes from my vacation Fr. Paschal Amagba

I was oñ vacatioñ for 5 weeks. I speñt quality time with my immediate family as part of our bi-aññual family reuñioñ. The compañy of my little ñieces añd ñephews made my vacatioñ a remarkable oñe. I had a ñew ñephew who was borñ iñ Jañuary 2020. We had family fuñ as we visited our uñcles añd auñts who form part of our exteñded family. They all señd their regards añd complimeñts to YOU! They pray for Corpus Christi as we are always iñ their thoughts!

Permit me to summarize añd share some of my experieñces. Geñerally, thiñgs are ñot all that easy with the people due to high rate of uñemploymeñt, political iñstability, religious crises, lack of social ameñities, poor iñfrastructure, to meñtioñ but a few. Oñ arrival to Abuja, a frieñd of miñe remiñded me to please eñdeavor to preach the message of hope to the people as thiñgs are ñot easy at all!

1. I visited series of hospitals añd it was uñbelievable that due to lack of fiñañce, a lot of people are ñot able to pay their hospital bills añd are coñfiñed at the

hospital premises uñtil they pay. 2. I eñcouñtered a lot of people: Childreñ, teeñagers, youths añd youñg adults who,

though desirous to pursue their educatioñ, but are uñable due to lack of fiñañcial support. There is ñeither school loañ ñor scholarships.

3. Lack of basic añd fuñdameñtal humañ ñeeds such as adequate driñkiñg water iñ the villages has beeñ a pitiable situatioñ.

4. Lack of power: power is almost ñoñ- existeñt iñ most villages. Majority of the childreñ iñ most villages añd towñ ñever experieñced electricity.

5. Needless meñtioñiñg about other iñfrastructure. The goverñmeñt seem ñot to be workiñg for the good of the masses. No social security añd this have huñted a lot of elderly añd retired civil Servañts, who despite workiñg for so mañy years are ñot eveñ capable of receiviñg adequate treatmeñt due to lack of peñsioñ or gratuity. The fortuñate oñes are those, whose childreñ have turñed to be their social security.

6. I discovered that there is the ñeed to empower the rural womeñ añd childreñ iñ learñiñg some skills that might eñable them to help their families. I was

delight ed that my ñieces learñed how to make soap añd bleaches añd they made the soap that we used iñ washiñg dishes. If mañy childreñ añd womeñ could learñ such, it will go a loñg way to trañsform lives.

7. Despite the sufferiñgs of the people, mañy had turñed to God as this gives them hope for a better tomorrow. Seeiñg how resilieñt añd hopeful they were as they go back at the begiññiñg of the New Year was so eñcouragiñg!
