From The Pastor’s Desk

Dear Parishioners,

Back in the beginning of October, Bishop Estevez ad-dressed all the priests at a convocation. He stated that pastors need to be focused more and more on the work of evangelization. Evangelization means the ministry of reaching out to the non-practicing Catholics and encour-aging them to return to the sacraments. It also means engaging our non-Catholic brothers and sisters and in-viting them to learn more about our faith. Evangeliza-tion can also take the form of charitable works with the poor, the sick, those in prison, or even the migrants. The work of evangelization can take the form of home visits, offering brochures, CDs and DVDs concerning the Catholic faith, webpages, Catholic radio, books, etc.

This weekend I would like you consider a very im-portant ministry of evangelization – the Legion of Mary. It is a unique apostolate founded in Ireland by Frank Duff in 1921. To be in the Legion of Mary, one must be a lay catholic. The stated mission is for active members to serve God under the banner of Mary by practicing the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy as men-tioned in chapter 33 of the Legion of Mary Handbook. The main apostolate of the Legion consists in activities (such as door-to-door visits for one) directed towards non-practicing Catholics encouraging them to come back to the sacraments. Also, legion members invite non-Catholics to consider the Catholic faith. This is done through encouraging them in prayer, attending Mass and learning more about the Catholic faith. The mem-bers of the Legion are primarily engaged in the perfor-mance of the Spiritual Works of Mercy rather than works of material aid.

Members of the Legion of Mary will be stationed out-side to answer any questions you may have regarding this apostolate. I encourage you to consider this beauti-ful work of mercy. And now some funnies: #1 – A little boy was overheard talking to himself as he strutted through the backyard, wearing his baseball cap and toting a ball and bat: "I'm the greatest hitter in the world," he announced. Then, he tossed the ball into the air, swung at it, and missed. "Strike One!" he yelled. Undaunted, he picked up the ball and said again, "I'm the greatest hitter in the world!"

He tossed the ball into the air. When it came down, he swung again and missed. "Strike Two!" he cried. The boy then paused a moment to examine his bat and ball carefully. He spit on his hands and rubbed them together. He straightened his cap and said once more, "I'm the greatest hitter in the world!" Again he tossed the ball up in the air and swung at it. He missed. "Strike Three!" "Wow!" he exclaimed. "I'm the greatest pitcher in the world."

#2 – A college senior took his new girlfriend to a foot-ball game. They found seats in the crowded stadium and were watching the action. A substitute was put into the game and as he was running onto the field to take his position, the boy said to his girlfriend, "Take a good look at that fellow. I expect him to be our best man next year." His girlfriend snuggled closer to him and said, "That's the strangest way I ever heard of for a boy to

propose to a girl. But, regardless of how you said it, I accept!"

#3 – A man loved to play golf. It was the one activity he looked forward to every week. One Saturday, he re-turned home from a scheduled three-some much earli-er than his wife expected. She asked him why he was home so early. "Do you want to play golf with someone who whines about every shot, complains about everything on the course, and makes noises when you're trying to make an important shot?", he asked. "No, I don't," answered his wife. "Neither did they!"

#4 - There were two good ol' boys from warmer climes who loved to fish. They wanted to do some ice fishing that they'd heard about in Canada, so they took off to try it. The lake was frozen nicely, so they stopped just be-fore they got to the lake at a little bait shop and got all their bait and tackle. One of them said, "We're going to need an ice pick." After they got their equipment, they took off. In about two hours, one of them was back at the shop and said, "We're going to need another dozen ice picks." He sold him the picks, and the good ol' boy left. In about an hour, he was back at the shop again and said, "We're going to need all the ice picks you've got." The shop owner couldn't believe it. "By the way," he asked, "how are you fellows doing?" "Not very well at all," he said. "We don't even have the stupid boat in the water yet." - Fr. Murphy
