Fr. West

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The readings today center on mindfulness, awareness of where we stand in God’s plan. The mountain of Sinai carries a message of the majesty and distance of God, while Jesus’ presence as host of the banquet speaks of in macy and mystery. September’s shadow calls us all to mindfulness as we prepare to return to life outside of summer. The Chris an life holds these two places of knowledge of God in careful balance. Even in the ac-counts of the Passion we see the table of the upper room in balance with the Mount of Olives.

Altar means “high place,” yet it is also a table. The former liturgy of the La n Rite began with the priest bow-ing at the foot of the altar’s three steps, chan ng Introibo ad altare Dei, or “I will go to the altar of God,” followed by the altar servers’ response, “The God who gives joy to my youth.” Many parishioners can recall and recite this scene by heart. As with so many things in liturgy, there are layers of meaning in our worship. The altar table evokes memories of the high places once reserved for encounter with the holy, and the in macy of the table where hospitality draws us to share food and drink.

News From Our Pastor

I arrived in Rome on Monday, August 26th. It was a beau ful day but a er flying all night I was a bit red from the long journey. The sabba cal house is named Casa O’Toole. It is on the grounds of the North American College in Rome and it is a very short walk to St. Peter’s Basilica. There are 21 priests enrolled in the sabba cal program.

The first major event of the week took place on Wednesday morning. We walked over to St. Peter’s Basilica for the celebra on of the Mass and a er Mass we a ended the papal audience and had the opportunity to see and

listen to the Holy Father, Pope Francis. Unfortunately we did not get an opportunity to meet him.

This week and next week we will a end a number of classes on the spirituality of St. Benedict and St. Francis of Assis-si. This Saturday we will visit one of the oldest Benedic ne monasteries s ll in existence in the town of Subiaco. The schedule is not very demanding so we are le with an opportunity to pray, read and visit the churches and sites of Rome and the surrounding area.

I have a ached a photo of St. Peter’s Basilica which I took from the balcony of my room here. I will try to keep you informed on a weekly basis of my me here in Rome.
