In the autumn of 2009 Brepols Publishers starts a new series with the name Corpus Christianorum in Translation (CCT). The series aims at making the voluminous body of Greek and Latin patristic and medieval texts that have appeared in the Corpus Christianorum series since its commencement in 1953 available to interested readers and scholars who are not necessarily familiar with the source languages.

CCT comprises translations of texts edited in the collections Series Latina, Series Graeca and Continuatio Mediaevalis. The target languages are English, French, German, Italian and Spanish. Primarily intended to make the texts edited in Corpus Christianorum accessible to those who do not have the opportunity to read them in the original language, the translations can also serve as a tool for quick reference and as an aid in interpreting the Greek or Latin text for those familiar with the source language. For these users, a link with the primary edition is established by means of a reference system within the translated text.

However, the translations can also be used as a tool for research by themselves. The translations attempt to reflect the content of the Greek and Latin originals as closely as possible.

Each volume is equipped with an introduction explaining the context, content, and historical meaning of the work in question. An overview of critical debates about the source text is also provided, as well as any new insights that might have arisen since the corresponding critical edition was published.

Furthermore, translation volumes are furnished with a bibliography, concise annotation, and in some instances a commentary on the text.

In many cases, the translation is prepared by the original editor of the text, and all translations offered are subjected to a professional peer review. For translations from Greek, this is done in collaboration with the Institute for Early Christian and Byzantine Studies at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven.

The translations appear as paperbacks. Subscribers to the Latin and Greek series are entitled to one free volume per subscribed series per year. La nouvelle collection, Corpus Christianorum in Translation (CCT), a pour objectif de rendre disponible aux lecteurs et aux chercheurs qui ne sont pas familiers avec la langue d’origine, le volumineux corpus de textes patristiques grecs et latins ainsi que les textes médiévaux qui ont été publiés dans le Corpus Christianorum depuis 1953. D’autre part, les traductions peuvent également servir d’outil pour trouver une référence rapidement ou pour fournir une aide à l’interprétation du grec et du latin. Elles peuvent également être utilisées en tant qu’outil pour les recherches.

Trois volumes seront publiés chaque année, correspondant à chacune des trois collections du Corpus Christianorum en langue originale. Les souscripteurs à la Series Latina, Series Graeca et Continuatio Mediaevalis ont droit à un volume gratuit par collection souscrite.

Die neue Reihe Corpus Christianorum in Translation (CCT) stellt moderne Übersetzungen griechischer und lateinischer Quellentexte der Patristik und des Mittelalters zur Verfügung, die seit 1953 im Corpus Christianorum erschienen sind.

Die Übersetzungen werden unabhängig von den kritischen Ausgaben publiziert. Ziel ist es, die im Corpus Christianorum edierten Texte auch denjenigen zugänglich zu machen, die sie nicht im Original lesen können. Die Bände ermöglichen natürlich auch dem Fachmann ein schnelles Nachschlagen; sie wollen ein hilfreiches Werkzeug für die Interpretation sein.

Jährlich werden drei Bände als Freiexemplare angeboten. Subskriptionen auf die Series Latina, auf die Series Graeca und auf die Continuatio Mediaevalis berechtigen zum Bezug je eines Freiexemplars für jede subskribierte Reihe.

The Instrumenta Lexicologica Latina and the Thesaurus Patrum Latinorum

are moving to a new platform: the Library of Latin Texts

Since 1982 many volumes in the Corpus Christianorum Series Latina (CCSL) and Continuatio Mediaevalis

(CCCM) have been accompanied by an Instrumenta volume. These Instrumenta volumes offer a

comprehensive linguistic breakdown of each edition, comprising a list of word forms, word frequency, a

concordance, and reverse word index.

The Instrumenta Lexicologica Latina (ILL) is part of a broader database, the Thesaurus Patrum Latinorum

(TPL), which combines writings of the Latin Church Fathers and works of the Middle Ages, edited both

inside and outside the Corpus Christianorum. Up until now, the lexicological information it contains has

been made available in printed and microfiche formats.

As microfiche has become less popular, Brepols has been looking for new ways to offer this information

in a reliable and user-friendly way. Since January 2009 new search and retrieval software has become

available as part of the new Library of Latin Texts. This software enables users to analyse the vocabulary

of individual works within the database. Each word in a text is accompanied by an exhaustive concordance

and brief contextual outline. By means of a new word-search function, one can determine the frequency

with which words occur in a given text. In addition, an immediate link to the full text is available.

Using this new software, CTLO and Brepols will work together to offer the same information for a set of

works or the complete works of an author, thus replacing and improving access to information that up till

now has been published in the Thesaurus Patrum Latinorum series.

Subscribers to the Instrumenta Lexicologica Latina will be duly notified about the end of their subscription

and the fact that the information will be incorporated into the new Library of Latin Texts. Subscribers

to the Thesaurus Patrum Latinorum will also be informed when the new format for the series becomes

available. In undertaking these measures to convert the ILL and TPL to a new platform, Brepols seeks to

make these resources even more accessible and user-friendly.

i l commento di Girolamo di Stridone all’Epistola ai Galati, composto nel 386 a Betlemme all’indomani della definitiva (e burrascosa) partenza da Roma, è un’impresa senza precedenti, come lo Stridonense dichiara nel prologo: applicando con coerenza tecniche note a Roma, ma guardate fino a quel momento con sospetto, lo Stridonense si propone di spiegare un’epistola paolina non più mediante la semplice parafrasi con qualche rara digressione filosofica che orienti il lettore (com’ era il caso dei predecessori latini Mario Vittorino e Ambrosiaster), bensì, alla maniera di Origene, come dibattitto aperto tra una pluralità di interpretazioni fra le quali il lettore può liberamente orientarsi. L’intuizione geronimiana ha, tra l’altro, il merito di dare nuova linfa ad un fenomeno culturale di grande portata per la letteratura latina in età tardoantica, che vede, nell’arco di pochi decenni, la fioritura a Roma, e più in generale in Occidente, di numerosi commentari paolini. Impossibile per noi moderni individuare gli autori greci delle molteplici spiegazioni menzionate da Girolamo; ma è certo che Origene è la fonte

principale e che per questo l’opera geronimiana rappresenta uno dei frutti più belli della fortuna dell’Alessandrino nel IV secolo. L’interesse per il commento a Galati è infine accresciuto dalla diatriba a distanza che s’innesca tra Girolamo e Agostino a proposito della spiegazione dello Stridonense di Gal 2, 11-14: forse riprendendo da Origene una spiegazione assai peculiare dell’incidente di Antiochia, lo Stridonense finisce col provocare un’articolata e più volte reiterata protesta epistolare da parte di Agostino, il quale non ammette la novità geronimiana.

Maximus the Confessor

maximus the Confessor, a monk and theologian of the seventh century, was a transmitter and creative interpreter of the dogmatic and ascetical traditions of the Greek-speaking Church, and an innovative mind in his own right. An important figure on the theological landscape of his day, he became deeply involved in the post-Chalcedonian Christological controversies concerning the natures, activities (energies), and wills in Christ, eventually suffering at the hands of the imperial authorities for his rejection of certain imperial dogmatic decrees, which in his view denied the principle of the salvation of the cosmos: the perfect communion of divinity and humanity – as preserved in their own proper natures – in the one Christ. He died in exile on the Black Sea coast, soon after his trial in

Constantinople, in 662. The Ambigua to Thomas are a collection of chapters devoted to the exposition of passages from Gregory Nazianzen and Ps. Denys the Areopagite. Maximus uses the texts as a means of expounding the meaning of the perfect union of divinity and humanity in the one Christ, arriving ultimately at an interpretation of the phrase from Denys, which affirmed that Christ “conducted his life among us according to a certain new theandric activity.”

Andrew of St Victor

Andrew of St Victor († 1175) was an exegete of a rare quality who set out to expound Scripture according to its literal sense, guided by the examples of Jerome and Hugh of St Victor.

The books of Samuel and Kings had a great influence on the spirituality and theology of the Middle Ages. To the medieval mind, they were more than just historical accounts; they attested to an important period in God’s dealings with this world, when interpreted typologically, they could also relate to other periods in the history of salvation. Yet before such higher spiritual wisdom could be attained, students at the school of St Victor first had to study the Scriptural texts at the most basic level of allegoresis: their historical, or literal, sense. The Commentary on Samuel and Kings offers such a literal explanation and gives an opportunity to

study Andrew at work: as a critical researcher, who used concepts of grammar, literary theory, and science to elucidate the text and who made Jewish exegesis available to Christian scholarship, and as a compiler. His meticulous scholarship on the literal sense of Scripture formed an important component of the curriculum of the school at St Victor, where thorough learning was seen as a preparation for mystical knowledge and spiritual understanding.

Frans van liere holds a Ph.D. in medieval studies from Groningen University and is Professor of History at Calvin College (USA). His critical edition of Andrew of St Victor’s Commentary on Samuel and Kings appeared in 1996.

im Jahre 1975 ist als Band 58 A des Corpus Chris-tianorum, Series Latina, die Streitschrift Anonymi Contra Philosophos erschienen. Grundlage dieser Edition waren zwei Handschriften. Die eine, der Codex Valentinianus, wird in der Kathedralbibli-othek in Valencia, Spanien, als Codex 253 (früher 178) aufbewahrt; die andere, der Codex Oxoniensis, als Codex Rawlinson A 368 in der Bodleian Library in Oxford. O enthält noch eine zweite Streitschrift mit dem Titel Excerpta ex libris beati Augustini infi delitati Iudaeorum obviantia. Sie richtet sich gegen Juden, in Parallele zu Contra Philosophos abgekürzt Contra Iudaeos. Von dieser Schrift und

Contra Philosophos hatte N. R. Ker schon 1969 eine zweite Handschrift beschrieben. Sie wird im British Museum London, Lincoln’s Inn, Hale 75, verwahrt. Als dem Editor der Codex Londiniensis im Jahre 1997 bekannt wurde, lag die Edition von Contra Iudaeos bereits in einem Korrekturausdruck vor. Da Professor D. Aschoff (Institutum Judaicum Delitzschianum, Münster) sich nach Abschluß der Edition schon anderen unaufschiebbaren Aufgaben zugewandt hatte, kam er erst nach langer Verzöge-rung dazu, die neue Handschrift einzuarbeiten. So wird die Edition von Contra Iudaeos erst über drei Jahrzehnte nach Contra Philosophos vorgelegt.

le Commentaire sur les Psaumes de saint Hilaire de Poitiers est une des œuvres majeures de la patristique latine. Ouvrage original mais s’appuyant souvent sur le commentaire d’Origène, il a introduit en occident les richesses spirituelles et exégétiques de la patristique grecque.

En septembre 1997 – quelques mois après le décès du prof. Jean Doignon – paraissait le premier volume de l’édition critique des Commentaires sur les Psaumes 1-91 de saint Hilaire de Poitiers. L’auteur avait consacré la majeure partie de sa vie à l’élaboration de cette œuvre.

Sur base des notices – léguées par Jean Doignon – a paru en 2002 le deuxième volume comprenant l’édition critique du Commentaire sur le Psaume 118, grâce aux bons soins de R. Demeulenaere, ancien collaborateur du Corpus Christianorum, à qui il avait confi é quelques semaines avant sa mort le dossier des deux volumes restés en suspens.

Le commentaire, bien qu’il n’explique pas tous les Psaumes, est assez prolixe. Le présent volume (Ps. 119-150) est le dernier d’une trilogie offrant une nouvelle édition, fondée sur tous les manuscrits connus.

les Synonyma d’Isidore de Séville, ouvrage de contenu ascétique et spirituel mais remarquable aussi par son style synonymique, connurent un très grand succès au Moyen Âge: plus de cinq cents manuscrits en ont été conservés, et ils furent abondamment cités par les auteurs médiévaux. Or pourtant ils n’avaient jamais fait l’objet d’une édition critique: leur dernière édition remontait à près de deux siècles (c’est celle de F. Arévalo, parue à Rome en 1802, et reproduite dans la Patrologie Latine).

Ce volume propose donc la première édition critique des Synonyma, fondée sur la collation des manuscrits les plus anciens. La principale nouveauté de ce travail est la distinction entre deux rédactions

de l’œuvre, qui sont toutes deux, probablement, de la main d’Isidore; l’étude des sources incite à penser qu’elles sont issues d’un même modèle que l’auteur aurait corrigé de manière indépendante. Le titre même de « Synonyma » n’est peut-être pas le seul: on trouve aussi le titre « Liber soliloquiorum », qui semble lui aussi isidorien.

L’autre apport de cette édition est la recherche systématique des sources, qui prouve que, comme dans ses autres œuvres, Isidore a abondamment emprunté à ses prédécesseurs.

lucas, bishop of Tuy from 1239 until 1249, is chiefl y known as the author of the Chronicon mundi, his great contribution to medieval history. But he also wrote De miraculis sancti Isidori, a work of hagiography, and in the decade of 1230-1240 while still a deacon, an antiheretical treatise, De altera uita.

De altera uita was fi rst published by Mariana in 1612 as De altera uita fi deique controuersiis aduersus Albigensium errores libri III: the only edition of the work until now. The author of this new edition, Dr. Falque, was also responsible for the critical edition of the Chronicon mundi published by Corpus Christianorum in 2003 (CC CM, 74).

les œuvres de Jean Scot Érigène, maître irlandais qui enseigna à l’École du palais de Charles le chauve en la seconde moitié du IXe siècle, sont bien représentées dans le Corpus Christianorum, tant pour la Series graeca (7, 18, 22) que pour la Continuatio mediaeualis (31, 50, 161-165). Le volume 166 de cette dernière série est consacré à l’œuvre exégétique du maître carolingien, à savoir une homélie (Vox spiritualis) sur le Prologue de l’évangile selon saint Jean et un commentaire sur le même évangile.

Les deux œuvres sont dignes d’intérêt, non seulement pour elles­mêmes, mais aussi pour l’infl uence qu’elles ont exercée sur la pensée occidentale. L’infl uence de l’homélie est illustrée par le grand nombre de manuscrits qui nous en ont transmis le texte. La précédente édition (Sources chrétiennes 151) en dénombrait cinquante-quatre, la nouvelle édition en dénombre soixante-treize. Tout différent

fut le sort du commentaire, puisqu’il ne nous a été conservé qu’en un seul manuscrit, malheureusement mutilé: Laon, Bibliothèque municipale 81. Mais ce manuscrit est précieux, puisqu’il est l’exemplaire de travail de l’auteur, annoté par lui. Il n’a pas quitté Laon depuis le IXe siècle. Ce fut sa chance, car c’est vraisemblablement à Laon qu’au XIIe siècle fut compilée la Glossa ordinaria sur l’évangile de Jean. Or, le compilateur a largement puisé dans le manuscrit 81 de Laon, assurant ainsi à d’importantes portions du commentaire de Jean Scot une large diffusion.

Les nouvelles éditions de ces deux textes repré-sentent un progrès sur les éditions précédentes (Sources chrétiennes 151 et 180). En effet, l’éditeur a tenu compte des progrès réalisés dans le domaine des études érigéniennes depuis 1972, notamment en ce qui concerne les autographes érigéniens: The Autograph of Eriugena (CCAMA III), Brepols 1996.

Raimundus Lullus

this volume offers the first comprehensive intro­duction in English to the study of the philosopher and theologian Raimundus Lullus (c. 1232-1316).

From the 1270s onwards Lullus worked on his Art: a philosophico-theological system which takes the basic concepts of the three monotheistic religions of its time and discusses them by means of rational discourse in order to convince Muslims (and Jews) of the truth of the Christian articles of faith. Revising his Art and extending it across all fields of human knowledge, Lullus created a universal science that strongly influenced thinkers such as Nicholas of Cusa and Leibniz. He produced some 280 works in both Catalan and Latin, the Latin Opera currently being edited in the Corpus Christianorum, Continuatio Mediaevalis series.

The present Introduction provides a key to Lullus’ prolific philosophical and theological output. It is divided into three sections: Lullus’ life, his works

and his thought, i.e. the Ars. The first section offers a survey of Lullus’ eventful life (his conversion, illumination, travels, etc.) and presents the histor-ical context for his intellectual projects. The second section offers a full catalogue of all his works, together with a short summary of each of them, an appreciation of their importance and basic bibliographical information concerning editions and further literature. The third section gives an explanation of Lullus’ Art, its mechanisms and its philosophical implications; it also shows how his thought manifested itself in the different realms of knowledge: natural, human and divine.

The book is the result of a joint effort by inter-national scholars specialising in Lullus, who have been working on this Introduction since 2003, namely, Óscar de la Cruz, Fernando Domínguez, Jordi Gayà, Robert D. Hughes, Marta M. Romano and the editors.

lorsque le Dominicain Humbert de Romans rédige son recueil d’exempla intitulé Tractatus de habundantia exemplorum ou encore De dono timoris, il a déjà quitté la fonction de maître général de l’ordre dominicain, qu’il occupa de 1254 à 1263 et il se trouve alors retiré au couvent de Valence. Les trois cents récits exemplaires qui composent le recueil concernent le don de crainte et s’adressent aux prédicateurs qui, pour rédiger leur sermon, chercheront l’exemple approprié pour illustrer les valeurs morales ou les comportements qu’ils veulent mettre en valeur ou au contraire combattre.

Le choix de classer cette « matière prédicable » selon les dons du Saint-Esprit provient directement de la source première de Humbert de Romans, c’est­à-dire le Tractatus de diuersis materiis predicabi-libus de son confrère et contemporain Etienne de Bourbon, qui appliqua le même type de classement aux centaines d’exempla qu’il rassembla. Beaucoup plus maniable, la compilation de Humbert connut un grand succès tout au long du Moyen Âge: on en compte aujourd’hui plus de quatre-vingt manuscrits.

p reaching was one of the main tasks of the Birgittine friars. Not surprisingly, a large part of the medieval manuscripts that survive from the mother house of the Birgittine order, Vadstena Abbey in central Sweden, are sermon manuscripts. In the Swedish and Scandinavian context they represent an exceptional source of knowledge about medieval history. This edition comprises 21 sermons of varying length dating from the late fourteenth to the early sixteenth century. They are published

here for the fi rst time, mainly from the compilers’ autographs. These sermons were partly composed for a monastic target audience, partly directed to priests ab extra. Among other things, they tell about the striving for monastic and spiritual reform that issued from Vadstena. A large group consists of sermons of an admonitory content addressed to the nuns by the Confessor General. These sermons in particular give unique glimpses of the inner life of the monastery.

h ieronymus von Prag, Magister der Universitäten von Paris, Köln, Heidelberg und Prag, ist durch Leben und Wirkung untrennbar mit seinem Freund Johannes Hus verbunden. Beide wurden als unverbesserliche Ketzer auf dem Konzil von Konstanz verurteilt und 1415 und 1416 kurz nacheinander verbrannt. Während Hus als einer der wichtigsten Vorläufer der europäischen Reformationen in das allgemeine Geschichtsbewußtsein einging, gilt dies nicht in gleichem Maße für Hieronymus, wohl auch weil sein literarisches Werk weitgehend unbekannt ist. Dabei erfreute sich dieser non-konforme Philosoph zu Lebzeiten ungeheuren Ansehens: Poggio Bracciolini, Zeuge beim Prozeß und bei der Hinrichtung, nannte Hieronymus von Prag einen Zweiten Cato, „virum dignum memoria hominum sempiterna“ (Brief 4 an Leonardo Aretino).

Im vorliegenden Band werden erstmals gesammelt alle erhaltenen Schriften des Gelehrten vorgelegt, viele davon bisher ungedruckt: akademische Er-örterungen, Streitschriften, politische und persön-liche Briefe (mit Dokumentation der unter Folter erzwungenen Abkehr von Hus und deren Rücknah-me, die den Feuertod bewußt in Kauf nahm), und das Corpus delicti „Scutum fi dei“, eine originelle Erklärung der Trinität in einem Wassergleichnis.

Die ausführliche Einleitung vom besten Kenner der Zeit stellt das Werk und den Menschen auf den gebührenden Platz in der Geistesgeschichte, auch als kleiner Versuch einer Wiedergutmachung im Sinne von Poggio Bracciolini.

i l maestro normanno Rodolfo di Caen (1080ca – post 1136), che vive buona parte della sua vita (a partire dal 1108) in Terrasanta, è autore di un’opera storica dedicata al condottiero crociato Tancredi Marchisio, nipote di Roberto il Guiscardo e cugino del più celebre Boemondo d’Antiochia, intitolata Tancredus (ma nota finora come Gesta Tancredi).Prendendo l’avvio dalla partenza del contingente italonormanno per la I Crociata (1096), Rodolfo racconta tutti gli eventi della spedizione con un occhio particolare al cavaliere italonormanno, arrivando fino agli anni della reggenza del principato d’Antiochia (1106). Ma forse (il testo sembra mutilo) giungeva fino alla morte di Tancredi (1112).

L’opera ha avuto una vicenda particolarmente sfortunata, sia sotto il profilo della tradizione, che sotto quello della considerazione quale fonte storica. L’unico manoscritto (Bruxelles, KBR, 5373, saec. XII), forse almeno parzialmente autografo, è rimasto sconosciuto per tutto il Medioevo, riemergendo e salvandosi dall’incendio che bruciò l’abbazia di Gembleux nel sec. XVIII. Trattato maldestramente con reagenti chimici, è arrivato fino a noi in uno stato assai scadente. Il fatto che il

testo racconti gli eventi dal 1096 al 1106, anni in cui l’autore non era in Terrasanta, lo ha fatto considerare come un esercizio di mera encomiastica (a causa anche della patina retorico-stilistica altissima che lo caratterizza). Una cronaca sulla I Crociata pertanto “inutile”, a fronte di testimonianze dirette come i famosi Gesta Francorum.

In realtà né la pregiudiziale stilistica né quella encomiastica hanno senso: Rodolfo vive molti anni a strettissimo contatto con Boemondo prima e con Tancredi poi: dunque le sue informazioni sono tutt’altro che di seconda mano. Inoltre, non si tratta di un testo sulla Crociata: è una biografia principesca nella scia della tradizione letteraria normanna, scritto non prima del 1113, e la cui ottica ideologico­politica è quindi tutta rivolta al “nuovo” problema della vita degli Stati latini di Terrasanta, piuttosto che a quello vecchio della conquista.

La nuova edizione critica, e la corposa Introduzione, restituiscono un’opera sostanzialmente nuova, in cui si ricostruisce l’evoluzione politica e culturale del principato normanno d’Antiochia nella prima metà del sec. XII.

i l Contra Amaurianos di Garnerio di Rochefort costituisce la più ampia testimonianza e la più compiuta confutazione della eresia di Amalrico di Bène e dei suoi discepoli, che fu condannata nel 1210 nel Sinodo provinciale di Sens, svoltosi a Parigi, insieme ai libri naturales di Aristotele, ai Quaternuli di David di Dinant e ai libri di teologia in volgare. Scritto nel 1210, probabilmente poco tempo prima del verdetto ecclesiastico, elenca i diversi punti dottrinali dell’eresia e li confuta uno ad uno. Insieme al Contra Amaurianos sono editi gli altri documenti del XIII secolo relativi ad Amalrico e ai suoi seguaci: atti del processo, censure uffi ciali, sermoni, cronache storiche, testi teologici e canonici.

Un’ampia introduzione affronta i problemi della attribuzione e datazione del testo, ne esamina le fonti, e perviene a ricostruire – con esiti molto diversi dalla storiografi a tradizionale – il pensiero degli eretici. Sulla base di una nuova classifi cazione e valutazione dei testi, la dottrina amalriciana non è più posta in rapporto all’universo speculativo del Periphyseon di Giovanni Scoto Eriugena, ma si confi gura come un sistema ispirato a un radicale rifi uto di Dio e della trascendenza, lontano dalla tradizione cristiana e isolato nello scenario dei movimenti ereticali.

The introduction includes: a material and bibliographical description of all extant copies of the text; a reconstruction of its problematic printing in Venice; a brief discussion of the life and works of the author; identifica­tion and contextualization of the lexicographical,

gramma tical, rhetorical, and literary sources of the work; and, finally, an analysis of the author’s ‘lexicographical’ technique.

The second part is a complete critical edition of the dictionary itself, including notes and a bibliography. The notes to the edition provide a full summary of early printing errors and textual variants, and discuss the classical, medieval, and humanist sources which, scholars have noted, bear influence on the work.

De toutes les chaînes sur le Cantique des Cantiques, la plus riche est l’Épitomé de Procope de Gaza: elle contient 390 péricopes exégétiques empruntées à une dizaine d’auteurs, dont les plus cités sont: Grégoire de Nysse, Nil d’Ancyre, Origène, Cyrille d’Alexandrie, Philon de Karpasia et Apollinaire de Laodicéee. L’intérêt documentaire de l’Épitomé de Procope est incontestable: il est seul à nous faire connaître les interprétations du Cantique élaborées par Cyrille d’Alexandrie et par Apollinaire de Laodi-cée. De plus, il a conservé en grec une soixantaine de fragments du grand Commentaire d’Origène. Outre son intérêt documentaire, l’Épitomé offre un tableau

contrasté de l’exégèse ancienne du Cantique: le caténiste a pris comme référence les Homélies de Grégoire de Nysse, qu’il confronte avec d’autres commentaires, d’inspiration principalement alex an-drine, rédigés entre le 3e et le 5e siècle, de manière à ouvrir le plus largement possible l’interprétation du texte biblique. Cette nouvelle édition, qui repose sur un inventaire complet de la tradition manuscrite, remplace celle qu’A. Mai avait procurée en 1837, d’après un manuscrit tardif où les sigles d’auteurs sont souvent erronés. C’est le miroir de l’exégèse ancienne du Cantique qui est ici offert au lecteur.

this volume presents the first edition of the Letters of Iakovos Monachos addressed to the sevastokratorissa Eirene, sister-in-law of the Emperor Manuel I Komnenos (1143-1180). Writing in the late 1140s, Iakovos offers spiritual advice to Eirene, and affi rms his support for her in times of trouble. This is a rare example of the correspondence of a Byzantine spiritual father and provides tantalizing glimpses into Eirene’s diffi cult life. Both are signifi cant fi gures in Byzantine cultural history, Iakovos as the author of the renowned Kokkinobaphos Homilies on the Theotokos and Eirene as a noted literary patroness.

The Letters’ style is striking. They are constructed almost entirely from a mosaic of quotations from the Cappadocian Fathers and other patristic authors, the most recent being Niketas of Herakleia. Very little can be attributed to the pen of Iakovos himself, leaving questions about his motivation

but also incidental insights into the holdings of a monastic library. The Letters are preserved in a handsome contemporary manuscript, very probably a presentation copy made for Eirene or her heirs, and two fragmentary late sixteenth-century copies.

The edition is accompanied by the usual apparatuses and indices, and a full introduction discussing the transmission of the text and setting out the context for Eirene’s life and the correspondence.The book will be of interest to specialists in Byzantine spirituality, Byzantine epistolography, the history of the twelfth century, women’s history, and Byzantine literacy.

F rancesca Barone presenta la prima edizione critica delle omelie De Davide et Saule di Giovanni Crisostomo. Delle omelie, che appartengono al periodo successivo alla Pasqua del 387, vengono esaminate la tradizione diretta, la tradizione indiretta, nonché la storia delle edizioni moderne. Il testo risulta trádito da 41 testimoni, la cui collazione integrale ha consentito di inferire l’esistenza di cinque diverse famiglie. Al di fuori di tali raggruppamenti si collocano due codici, il Mytilene Monè Leimonos 32, del X­XI secolo e il Monacensis Gr. 6, del X secolo. La tradizione indiretta si articola in tre rami: 1. l’omelia pseudocrisostomica Contra theatra, sulla quale non esistono studi e che pertanto non è ancora datata né è stata attribuita ad alcuno. L’omelia riprende la digressione contro gli spettacoli con cui inizia la terza omelia De Davide et Saule. 2. le Eclogae, una raccolta di componimenti a carattere morale composta nel X secolo da Theodoro Dafnopate a partire da stralci di omelie del Crisostomo (autentiche, o che il compositore riteneva tali); 3. una versione in copto sahidico della De Davide et Saule 3, trádita dal papiro VIII Orlandi, conservato presso il Museo Egizio di Torino. Quanto alla storia delle edizioni moderne,

viene analizzato il testo edito da Savilio, Fronton du Duc, Montfaucon, Migne, vengono analizzate le relazioni fra gli editori, e quelle tra il loro testo e la tradizione manoscritta superstite.

Le omelie De Davide et Saule, ciclo di predicazioni sul tema dell’ira e delle virtù che ad essa si contrappongono, testimoniano l’attività esegetica e pastorale del Crisostomo all’inizio del suo percorso sacerdotale. Il caratteristico ricorso alle similitudini, di cui il Crisostomo si avvale per rendere più facilmente fruibili al pubblico i paradigmi morali proposti, offre inoltre al lettore moderno uno spaccato vivace e realistico della società coeva. Dai piaceri diffusi (vino, spettacoli, prostitute) ai giochi olimpici, dalle consuetudini domestiche alle prassi liturgiche.

les volumes du Thesaurus Patrum Graecorum (CCTPG) fournissent aux chercheurs des concor-dances lemmatisées et entièrement désambiguïsées des textes grecs des Pères de l’Église et des histo­riens byzantins. Les matériaux lexicaux issus de ces analyses sont versés dans un dictionnaire électronique, le Dictionnaire Automatique Grec, outil de base de la lemmatisation. Ce nouveau titre de la collection propose la concor dance d’un auteur qui a sensiblement marqué de son empreinte l’histoire de la pensée chrétienne des premiers siècles, Clément d’Alexandrie. Né à Athènes vers le milieu du deuxième siècle après J.­C., mort sans doute en Cappadoce vers 215, Clément est célèbre pour les enseignements qu’il donna à Alexandrie, ville gréco-romaine dans laquelle païens, juifs et chrétiens se côtoyaient quotidiennement. Sa vaste production littéraire est la première à présenter une synthèse complète de la foi chrétienne et de la philosophie grecque, un syncrétisme capable de rivaliser avec les productions antérieures de l’hellénisme paien. Elle est aussi à l’image de cette ville dans laquelle son auteur a vécu de longues années, pleine de références au passé et porteuse du message chrétien qui transformera l’Empire d’Orient durant les deux siècles suivants. Ainsi, même si la notoriété de Clément n’a jamais égalé celle des Pères du ive siècle – il demeurera peu connu des Latins et peu apprécié des Byzantins – la prise en compte de ses écrits dans le CCTPG était légitime.

Le présent volume analyse le vocabulaire de tous les textes conservés de Clément et édités dans le corpus de Berlin (Die griechischen christlichen Schriftstel-ler der ersten drei Jahrhunderte) et la collection des Sources Chrétiennes: Le Protreptique, Le Pédago-gue et Les Stromates, mais aussi les Excerpta e Theodoto, les Eclogae propheticae, l’homélie Quis dives salvetur et les fragments.

les volumes du Thesaurus Patrum Graecorum (CCTPG) consacrés à l’exploration du lexique des chroniqueurs et des historiens byzantins ont fourni jusqu’ici des concordances lemmatisées de textes rédigés entre le vie et le ixe s. - de Zosime, Procope de Césarée et Théophane le Confesseur à Nicéphore le Patriarche ­ et portant jusqu’au règne de l’empereur iconoclaste Léon V l’Arménien (813-820). Ce nouveau volume, le vingt­deuxième de la collection, continue directement ces travaux en abordant l’analyse lexicale des quatre livres attribués par la tradition à Joseph Génésios et sans doute rédigés sous l’égide de Constantin VII Porphyrogénète (913­959). L’auteur dresse un tableau des règnes de Léon V, de Michel II d’Amorium (820-829), de Théophile (829-842), de Michel III (842-867) et de Basile Ier le Macédonien (867-886), à l’égard duquel il se montre très favorable. Comme le titre l’indique, trois sources anonymes sont également abordées dans ce volume: la Chronique de l’année 811 présente un récit circonstancié de l’expédition désastreuse entreprise contre la Bulgarie par l’empereur Nicéphore Ier Logothète (802­811); la narration conservée sous le nom d’un Scriptor incertus, que d’aucuns considèrent comme issue d’une source reliée à celle de la Chronique de l’année 811, transmet des faits relatifs aux empereurs Michel Ier Rhangabé (811-813) et Léon V; enfin, la Chronique de Bruxelles présente une liste commentée des empereurs romains et byzantins depuis Jules César jusqu’à Romain III Argyre (1028-1034), il s’agit d’un court memento, étonnant à la première lecture mais dont l’intérêt historique, sur certains points, a été démontré.

L’ambition des responsables scientifiques du CCTPG est de prendre en compte l’ensemble des sources grecques disponibles et d’en intégrer les données lexicales dans un dictionnaire électronique, le Dictionnaire Automatique Grec, outil de base utilisé lors de la lemmatisation. La taille de ces trois textes anonymes était assurément trop modeste pour en faire des Thesauri indépendants. Les joindre à l’analyse du récit de Joseph Génésios évitait de les écarter définitivement du champ de la recherche. La thématique commune de ces différents témoins et leur chronologie font de cet ensemble textuel un corpus homogène dont l’analyse lexicale contribuera à fournir une image toujours plus large et plus précise du lexique des Byzantins.
