As Zangler welcomes his imaginary audience to his imaginary show, so we welcome you to ‘Crazy for You’, Spotlight’s offering for 2009. Broadway meets the wild, wild west.

We think this is our most technically and artistically demanding show to date, and we hope we have done justice to the fast and furious story, aswell as to the glorious Gershwin music and lyrics. I would like to thank Sue for her love and support, and I would like to thank Doug for giving Louisa the space, time and love to allow her to be my incredible co-producer and brilliant choreographer.

the Story Behind the show!

It looks and feels like an original 1930s Gershwin musical, but although all the songs are genuine Gershwin, and the style is seemingly of the era, all is not what it might seem.

One of the problems in restaging shows that were great hits in the 1930s is the book, or libretto. Although many of the great tunes and lyrics from musicals of the pre-World War II era have become part of our collective conscience and our pop heritage, the shows themselves resist revivals. Times have changed, dramatic priorities are different, and what is witty is always redefined by succeeding generations.

So why not rewrite the book? This idea led to the creation of “Crazy for You,” the 1992 Broadway Tony Award-winner that was loosely based on the 1930 hit “Girl Crazy” by George Gershwin, with lyrics by his brother Ira and a book by George S. Kaufman and Morrie Ryskind. “We read the book, and it was dated,” says “Crazy for You” librettist Ken Ludwig, author of “Lend Me a Tenor” and “Moon Over Buffalo.” “It was made up of skits and... stereotypes.”

But it also had four great Gershwin songs -- “Bidin’ My Time,” “Embraceable You,” “I Got Rhythm,” and “But Not for Me.” The next step was logical -- if the book was going to change, why not take advantage of this and add some other top Gershwin tunes? And so Ludwig and director Mike Ockrent added 13 other Gershwin songs to the seven numbers retained from “Girl Crazy” (out of the show’s original 21). Seven came from Broadway shows (“Treasure Girl” from 1928,” “Oh! Kay” from 1926, “Show Girl” from 1929, and “Ladies First” from 1918).

Five more were borrowed from two Hollywood films for which the Gershwins provided music and lyrics (“Shall We Dance” and “Damsel in Distress,” both from 1937). And finally there was one last addition, “Naughty Baby,” which was not written either for the stage or films. In the end, “Crazy for You” became a veritable Gershwin feast.

“We wanted audiences to believe that each song was written especially for ‘Crazy for You’ -- that they couldn’t possibly have come from anywhere else.... [One night] we overheard a couple talking about the show. The woman asked, ‘Are George and Ira Gershwin still alive?’ And her husband said, ‘They must be. They’re still writing musicals.’”

As for the story, Ludwig kept the basic premise of an Eastern playboy turning up in a small Western Town. In “Girl Crazy,” the setting was Custerville, Arizona, and the playboy was Danny Churchill, who is banished from New York by his father to a family-owned ranch, where -- it is hoped -- Danny will mend his ways and become a more responsible person. Danny becomes Bobby Child in “Crazy for You,” a banker who goes West to Deadrock, Nevada, to foreclose on a rundown theatre.

Bobby, who is stage-struck, falls in love with Polly Baker. But if he forecloses he will lose Polly, so he convinces her to put on a show that will pay off the debt her father owes on the theatre. To keep the plot going there are mixups and misunderstandings, disguises and improbable appearances, but eventually everything is happily resolved, and Polly and Bobby are united, just like Danny and Molly in the original story.

The show attracted rave reviews and ran on Broadway for 1,662 performances.

It opened in London’s West End in March 1993 and ran for nearly three years, winning the Olivier Award for Best New Musical along the way.

We’ve wanted to do this show for the last 4 years, but have never had enough men. Well now we have – and here it is!

John only moved to Oban at Christmas 2007 and has wasted no time in getting involved with Spotlight. He was born and raised in Somerset, and has been in shows since his early teenage years

when he made his musical debut as ‘Customer Number 1’ in a school production of ‘Annie’. When he was starring in a junior version of ‘Les Miserables’, among the audience was the Assistant Director of the West End production. He was so impressed with John that he invited him to join the West End chorus for a couple of weeks. We welcome him on board and wish him all the best in this demanding role.

Roddy joined the Company in 1991, appearing as Rolf in ‘The Sound of Music’. Since then he has taken on many lead roles,

and feels his favourite was probably Higgins in ‘My Fair Lady’.

He is involved whole heartedly in the group and is currently the chair of the Spotlight Committee. He says, “it’s great to be involved with a group of like minded people doing something you love” In this show he brings his considerable comedic talents to the role of Lank.

Linsey attended Dance Classes in Arrochar from the age of 4, later travelling to Helensburgh to take more advanced tuition and to take part in numerous dance productions. She moved to Oban 4 years ago and in 2007 took on the part of Ado Annie in ‘Oklahoma’. A great success. That year she was also accepted to study at The American Academy of Dramatic Art in Hollywood, but sadly could not secure the funding to take up the opportunity. She says that Polly has been the role she always wanted to play, and she has grasped the chance with both hands – and feet.

This is Cecil’s first show with Spotlight Musical Theatre Group. He has previously worked in film & television as a stunt Cuckoo in many productions including Springwatch with Bill Oddie and many of the Bond Movies where he has played a variety of wildlife and been shot at, driven over, cooked and eaten and generally suffered for his art. We wish him luck in this - his most tricky & dangerous role to date.

Frances saw an advert in the paper and turned up for an open workshop before the 2003 pantomime ‘Goldilocks and the Three Bears’. She found the group to be very welcoming and decided to join. She’d managed to keep a fairly low profile up until now – but talent will out, and we’re delighted we’ve persuaded her to take on her first main role.

Kate is Oban born and bred and since joining us for ‘Sweet Charity’ in 1993, has been involved ever since. It’s a tribute to her versatility

that she says her two favourite parts were The Wicked Witch in the pantomime ‘Sleeping Beauty’ and Laurie in ‘Oklahoma’

You can’t get two more diverse roles than that.

Kevin’s been with Spotlight since 1992 when he played Fagin in ‘Oliver’. He considers himself to have been lucky to have had some great parts including Barnum, and Bill in ‘Me and my Girl’. He says he’s not as young as he used to be and now divides his time between character parts and directing. This year though, he’s doing both!

We originally chose this show 4 or 5 years ago, but it never happened because we couldn’t cast it. Well now we can! Thankfully, we have willing men to play the cowboys, a team of stunning Follies Girls who have worked unstintingly to gain dancing skills they didn’t know they were capable of and we are lucky enough to have two stunning young talents who can do justice to the very demanding lead parts. Our set designs, costumes and publicity also continue to get better and better.
