1. Mainline Knock-Down (K.D.)Cartons - Bale UnitizingPrimary use of strap in corrugatedplant. Finished cartons are stacked inK.D. fashion to produce bale loads (nopallets). Cartons are stacked on “wastersheets” and same are used on top ofloads. These provide stability and serveas corner protectors under the straps.Bales are either “one-up” or “column-stack” and loads can vary in length andwidth, but most popular dimensionsare 45" wide x 45" high. Strap patternsvary, but 2 x 2 is prevalent.

Automatic compression unitizers withconveyor width openings between 77"and 102", and height openings to 90"are used to apply straps. Each bale iscompressed, strapped, rotated (if need-ed) and strapped in cross direction. It isthen exited to accumulation conveyor.(Some use of pallets continues andpallet void feeding attachments, a partof the unitizer, are used to feed thestrap through the pallet void.)

2. Bundling ApplicationSome corrugated customers requirethat their boxes be bundled incremen-tally. To facilitate, an automatic strap-ping machine is placed at the end of the“flexos”(flexographic/folder/gluer/printer/sloter). Cartons are accumu-lated, counted and presented to a strap-ping machine that compresses the indi-vidual bundles and places a single5MM or 6MM strap. The bundles thenconvey to bale preparation area andbecome a part of a larger bale.
