Background Info

Page 3: Corsi

A player's Corsi Number is just the sum of all shots directed by a team towards the opposition net (shots on goal, missed shots, and blocked shots), minus the sum of all shots directed by the opposition towards your team's net. For an individual player the Corsi number is just the value determined while they are on the ice.

The Corsi Number is the differential in the total number of shots directed at the net while a player is on the ice.

What is Corsi

Page 4: Corsi

The number can be broken down into whose net the shots are directed towards (their own net (-) and their opponent's net (+)) similar to the plus minus statistic.

More Corsi

1. Mikhail Grabovski (TOR): 21.32. Dustin Byfuglien (WIN): 20.73. Clarke MacArthur (TOR): 19.34. Ryan Kesler (VAN): 18.25. Mason Raymond (VAN): 17.5

(2010-11) , min.50 games, 5 on 5)

Page 5: Corsi

Corsi: the shot differential while a player was on the ice.

Relative Corsi: Corsi of player-Corsi of Team when player not on the ice

Different Types of Corsi

Page 6: Corsi

Corsi Number = (Shots on Target For + Missed Shots For + Blocked Shots Against ) - (Shots on Target Against + Missed Shots Against + Blocked Shots For)

Dingle McDingleberry was on the ice for 2.04 goals for, 3.04 goals against, 29.0 saves for, 29.1 saves against, 11.6 missed shots for, 10.3 missed shots against, 16.0 blocked shots against and 12.9 blocked shots for. (3.3)

Whats his Corsi?

So, his Corsi Number = (2.04 + 29.0 + 11.6 + 16.0) - (3.04 + 29.1 + 10.3 + 12.9) = 3.3

Corsi Example

Page 7: Corsi

Relative Corsi Number = Corsi Number of player - Corsi Number of Team when player not on ice

McDingleberry isn't on the ice, the Senators score 1.98 goals for, 2.70 goals against, 26.3 saves for, 25.9 saves against, 10.7 missed shots for, 11.4 missed shots against, 12.4 blocked shots against and 13.2 blocked shots for.

What's his Corsi REL?

Relative Corsi Number = 3.27 - [ (1.98 + 26.3 + 10.7 + 12.4) - (2.70 + 25.9 + 11.4 + 13.2) ] = 3.27 - (-1.82) = 5.09 or 5.1.

What is his Corsi REL

Page 8: Corsi

For every 60 minutes that he plays 5 on 5 versus every 60 minutes that he doesn't play, the Senators will be better off by a net 5.1 shots attempted.

So what does this mean?

Page 9: Corsi

the goal of the game of hockey is to score goals. In order to score goals you have to generate shots, which means shot attempts. Statistically, the more shot attempts there are, the more likely you are to get a goal.

Like Corsi, Fenwick is a shot derived statistic, but unlike Corsi, it does not include blocked shots.
