Everywhere where people are working on or at machines running at
high speed with high associated forces, the highest degree of safety must be
guaranteed and that from all sides. Whether on edging presses or welding
robots, on punches, die-cast or injection moulding machines: SIGUARD
3RG784/3SF784 light curtains provide perfect protection with their optical
sensor blocking functions. They generate a two-dimensional protective field of
infrared light beams. If a person or an object enters this protective field, the
machine goes into a safe condition – the potential hazard is neutralized.
SIGUARD light curtains distinguish themselves due to their high noise immunity:
They have an extremely high degree of availability. These functions are imple-
mented using integrated circuits that have been specifically designed for the
purpose (ASICs) and an intelligent evaluation technique that has been patented.

General functions
Increases the noise immunity against powerful
external light sources (multi-scan)
If noise and disturbances are expected due to powerful
external light sources in rugged ambient conditions –
for instance as a result of stroboscopic lamps or welding
robots – if a beam is interrupted, it is often more practi-
cal to first wait until the interruption continues before
the outputs are shut down. This increases the degree of
availability of the plant/system whereby the response
time is increased and therefore the safety clearance.
Transmission channels
In order to be able to differentiate between the trans-
mitted infrared light and ambient light and to avoid the
infrared light from being influenced by e.g. warning
lights of passing forklift trucks or sparks from welding
equipment, the infrared light is transmitted in pulse
packages. The light curtains, light grids and transceivers
are equipped with two transmission channels.
Start/restart inhibit
The start/restart inhibit function can be activated in
order to prevent that the plant or system immediately
resumes operation after the protective field has been
interrupted and then becomes free again. When secur-
ing access to machines etc., it is absolutely mandatory
that the start/restart inhibit function is used. The rea-
son for this is that only the access to the hazardous
zone is monitored, but not the area between the pro-
tective field and the potentially hazardous motion.
Contactor monitoring
The contactor monitoring is used to monitor the con-
tactors, relays or valves connected downstream from
the light curtain. In this case, switching elements with
positively driven checkback signal contacts are required.

Area with reduced resolution
If objects are permanently in the area of the light
curtain, then these can be blanked using blanking
functions. This guarantees disturbance-free operation.
In this case, a differentiation is made between objects
at a fixed location, that are permanently in the
protective field, and moving objects that from time to
time can exit the protective field zone.
Fixed blanking
The “fixed blanking” function can be used if stationary
objects are permanently located within the protective
field of the light curtain. The light curtain permanently
monitors the blanked object: The light curtain moni-
tors whether the object is precisely located at that
position that was taught-in.
Floating blanking
The floating blanking function can be used if moving
objects are permanently located within the light cur-
tain area. The object that is blanked in a floating fash-
ion is permanently monitored: The light curtain moni-
tors whether the object is permanently located in the
light curtain area.
Reduced resolution
The reduced resolution function can be used if moving
objects are not permanently located within the protec-
tive field of the light curtain. Contrary to floating
blanking, the object is not permanently monitored.
When the “reduced resolution” function is used, then
the effective resolution of the light curtain changes.
The safety clearance must be re-calculated with the
effective resolution.

Muting functions
When vertically arranged, light curtains, light grids and
transceivers are often used to secure access to poten-
tially hazardous areas. The protective effect can be
muted by using additional sensor signals. For instance,
this function can be used to transport materials into or
out of the hazardous area. The protective field is tem-
porarily muted and is re-enabled after the materials
have passed.
Muting restart
If, for example, the power supply fails while the mate-
rials being transported are passing the muting sensors,
the valid muting sequence is interrupted. If the power
supply voltage returns, the muting operation is not au-
tomatically continued as the expected muting sequence
is not provided. In order to remove the materials being
transported from the area of the muting sensors, an
integrated move-away mode can be provided using
the start button.
4-sensor sequential muting
If the material to be transported into the
hazardous area always has the same di-
mensions and space is not restricted, then
sequential muting is preferably used. For
sequential muting, four muting sensors
are connected that must be activated in a
specified sequence in order to initiate the
muting operation.
2-sensor parallel muting
Parallel muting is preferably used in those
plants and systems where the dimensions
of the materials being transported are not
constant or where space is restricted. This
can be used with two muting sensors whose
beams then cross behind the protective
field in the hazardous zone.

3-sensor direction muting
The 3-sensor direction muting has a similar configura-
tion to the 2-sensor parallel muting. The material can
only be transported through the light curtain in one
direction. In order to initiate the muting function, ini-
tially muting sensor M1 must be activated and then
the two muting sensors M2 and M3. If the paths of
muting sensors M2 and M3 are interrupted, it is no
longer necessary to activate sensor M1.
4-sensor parallel muting
If the material being transported is too small to be
simultaneously detected by 4 sequentially located
sensors, and if space for the application is restricted,
in order to implement the light barrier crossover of
the 2-sensor parallel muting function, the 4-sensor
parallel muting function can be used, e.g. using
sensors. As far as the function is concerned, the
4-sensor parallel muting corresponds to the 2-sensor
parallel muting function – however the activation
signal is retrieved from two pairs of sensors.

Fast and productive operation
Machine motion is initiated by the light curtain. The
optional cycle control function should be selected if
it is necessary to intervene once or twice in the protec-
tive field of the light curtain (e.g. to insert or remove
workpieces).

Muting function with light barriers
A muting function can be implemented together
with the 3RG7847 evaluation units.
The 3RG782 series of light barriers can be used for
applications involving Categories 2 or 4. When
combined with the 3RG7825 evaluation unit, the
3RG7823 light barriers, Category 2, allow functions
such as start/restart inhibit and contactor monitoring
to be implemented.
We recommend the 3RG7847 evaluation units for
muting functions and for combining with the
3RG7824 light barriers, Category 4.
