SEPTEMBER GENERAL MEETING
Steve Eichelberger and Shawn Jewell will present the
topic, “What Would You Do in a Hostage Situation” at
our General Meeting on September 8.
The President’s Corner
From the President’s Corner
Hello all of you GREAT AMERICANS! The
weather has been terrific and many of you have
been taking advantage of your beautiful gun range
and for that we are all very thankful.
Bill Lewis and I went to the Oregon Association
Of Shooting Ranges meeting in Salem on August
20th
. We heard from ranges all over our state
regarding what’s new and any issues they were
having. The group then pulls from resources to
assist in any way they can to resolve and/or
improve their respective situations.
After hearing from all of the ranges, it was clear
that more needs to be done to promote and build
membership. COSSA Park has taken a very
proactive stance on this in 2016. With the additions
of new hat designs, new website, which is close to
completion, radio ads and social media buzz we are
the leaders in the promotional and marketing
efforts. Of all of these methods used for promotion,
non is as meaningful or powerful as WORD OF
MOUTH. So it is with that spirit, I ask you to share
with your friends, or anyone that is within ear shot
hehehe, the opportunities provided to enhance
one’s shooting experience by directing them to
COSSA Park.
The new electronic gate will be up and running.
We hope that the vandalism and theft will be
curtailed. With this change, I’m sure there will be
some issues at first so please be patient as we get
them smoothed out over time. For things to change,
we have to change and change isn’t always
comfortable. One thing that will be comfortable for
sure will be that WE DON’T HAVE TO GET
OUT OF OUR CARS ANYMORE TO OPEN
THE DANG GATE. Can I get an AMEN?

RANGE REMINDERS
SIGHT IN DAYS SCHEDULED
The COSSA Sighting in Clinics for 2016 are set
for the weekends of September 10 & 11 and 24 &
25. We are doing more advertising this year and
are expecting more people to attend. Therefore, I
am looking for more volunteers to help. If you
want to come out for all four days, that would be
great. If you could volunteer for a morning or
afternoon and any of those dates, it would be a big
help. Do not feel that you need to be an expert to
help. Come out and learn. We will have some
experts out there to take care of any problems the
shooter come up with, such as sight or scope
adjustment’s, we will have big hammers so we do
not have to force anything. We also need people
to monitor shooters, get them set up and most of
all, to take their money. It would be a big help if
we had more than we need rather than not enough.
I would like schedule times for helping out, so
please contact Bill Lewis, 541-480-4695 or by e-
mail, [email protected] .
NEW GATE
The new gate will be operational on Sept. 8th
. We
have extended the road in front to the cattle guard
and graveled it in order to allow large vehicles and
5th
wheels to enter the West gate. The fill has not
settled yet so do not go clear over to the edge.
The current combination will be in effect for the
East gate and the fire trailers.
VANDALISM
More vandalism and target damage has been
found on the range. There have been several
instances where someone is shooting holes in
barriers, range distance signs and target stands.
The perpetrator used armor piercing bullets to
penetrate the steel parts and in one case major
damage was done to a target holding stand. The
Lady Hawks had damage to one of its expensive
target holding stands. The Lady Hawks bay, 16,
is for pistol shooting only. Do not use rifles in
that bay. The Gong Range target distance signs
now have 11 bullet holes in them. There is no
reason for this and it is pure vandalism.
Some of this damage may have been caused by
visitors that do not know the rules and
regulations of COSSA Park. However, plain
common sense should be enough to prevent this
kind of damage. We hope that some of this
damage will be lessened by the installation of the
new gate. However, any member of COSSA that
is not following the rules and damaging any part of
COSSA Park will lose their membership and
banned from COSSA Park. If any member sees
anything like this going on please get a license
number on any vehicle and report it to a COSSA
Board member or Bill Lewis, 541-480-4695.
TRASH PICKUP
Disciplines are reminded that they need to keep
their garbage cans emptied so that trash is not
blown around the range. The work party takes
care of the other trash containers only once a
month and there have been several instances where
the discipline cans are overflowing.
Disciplines are also reminded that after any large
event the discipline that puts on the event is
responsible for dumping the trash and the
cardboard trailer.
TARGET STANDS
Over the last few years COSSA has been providing
three legged target stands for use by members.
These stands are built to hold two 1” X 2” sticks,
supplied by COSSA, so member can staple
cardboard and targets to them. These target stands
are made by members with material supplied by
COSSA. It seems that many of these target stands
are getting tired of being at COSSA Park and are
walking away. We also find damaged stands that
can be repaired but many cannot. I am looking for
a member that has a welder at home that can weld
up new stands. COSSA will provide the necessary
materials and a fixture to hold the parts while
welding. Any work done will benefit the member
by reducing their annual dues. Contact Bill Lewis,
541-480-4695 or [email protected] if you are
interested in helping out.

NEW SECURITY GATE GOING
INTO SERVICE!
On September 8th, 2016 at 9:30am, COSSA’s solar
powered security gate will be placed in service. Access
to COSSA PARK will require the use of one’s
membership ID number. The combination lock at the
“COSSA Gate” at the west entrance will no longer
give members access to the range. By this time, all
members in good standing should have received a
reminder of their member ID number.
Access to COSSA PARK will be as follows…
Upon entering, drive up to the key
pad and proximity card reader on
the left hand side of the west access
road.
Input your access code/membership
ID number (followed by the # sign)
or place your access card within 6”
of the reader.
o Wait for the gate to fully
open and drive in.
o Gate automatically closes
behind you.
o An instruction sign is
posted.
Members with Guests MUST
BOTH still sign-in at the Kiosk and
pay $5 for each Guest!
Exiting: the gate automatically
opens to allow exiting.
Access procedures for Discipline
and Special Events will be
communicated to their participants
by the Discipline or Special Event
Coordinators.
As long as a member is in good standing, their ID
number will allow access to COSSA Park. Lapsed
memberships will find their membership ID will no
longer open the gate following the expiration date
printed on their card. Use of a member’s ID by non-
members, may jeopardize one’s continued membership
in COSSA.
Discipline events, special events, trainers and all other
users will also have unique access codes. A COSSA
member participating in those events should use the
event code versus their membership ID number. Event
coordinators will be providing those access codes to
their participants.
The West Gate now allows full RV access and all
members must use the West Gate for access. The
current combination for now will also unlock the 4 fire
trailers if needed and all other COSSA combination
locks.
Please direct any questions to Ed Hauswald,
Membership Coordinator, at [email protected] or
(540) 272 3387.
FIRE DANGER
The fire danger is very high this year. The only
reason we are able to keep COSSA Park open is
because of the fire waiver given us by BLM.
Several areas of the range have high grass and
brush and should be avoided. Some of these areas
will be posted as off limits to anything but
scheduled events. Watch where you park or
camp. Follow the rules below and have a same
and fire free time.
1. Smoking is prohibited except in vehicles.
2. Open fires prohibited, including campfires, charcoal fires and warming fires. Portable cooking stoves using liquefied or bottled fuels are allowed.
3. Camping and Parking of vehicles only allowed in designated areas.
4. Personal Generators are allowed but must be contained in an metal fire pan.
5. A commercial generator is allowed as long as the area of operation is cleaned of vegetation.
6. Generally, no personal ATVs or vehicle travel outside main roads or designated area. On large COSSA events up to 4 ATVs and up to 10 golf carts may be used.
7. With the fire trailers COSSA shall have on site and readily available and ample means to move them to where they are needed in the event of a fire when events are occurring.
8. Notify Central Oregon Dispatch at (541) 416-6800 a week ahead of when a large event will be occurring.
9. Central Oregon Dispatch will be notified immediately if a fire occurs.
10. BLM may revoke this waiver at any time.

GREAT BASIN PRECISION RIFLE
July 30th
Match. Three new shooters hit the 1,760-
yard target. They are now Members of the One
Mile Club and received a Coin with the date and
their name.
John Dwyer 2 hits
Matt Foster 1 hit
Repeat 1-mile Shooter, Mike Brady, 1 hit
Robbie Swartz 1 hit
We had a few shooters from Leupold. They
brought some give-away items and a 50% off card
that is good for any item from Leupold. One of the
shooters received the card. Thank you Leupold.
Mike Seay from Nosler teamed up with his
daughter, Dez. It is always nice to have family
members be able to shoot together.
For Long Range Shooting, besides having quality
optics, one could install on your rifle or scope an
ACD (Anti-CANT Device) in the form of a bubble
level. When shooting past 300 yards, it should
tighten your group size.
We also use bubbles on our Buffalo Rifles. It
makes a big difference when shooting the Buffalo
Match out to 1,200 yards.
