OBJECTIVES THE MAIN OBJECTIVE OF THESE CASE STUDIES

ARE TO LEARN HOW SPACE HAS BEEN UTILISED

WHILE DESIGNING ACCORDING TO THE

LOCATION AND ITS PURPOSE.

1) SECONDARY METHOD :

COLLECTING INFORMATION FROM INTERNET AND

NEWSPAPERS.

2) TERTARY METHOD :

SPEAKING TO ARCHITECT VINU DANIEL.

IN KERALA, THE TREND TO RETAIN THE OLD

ACHITECTURAL METHODS ARE INCREASING.

TO DO CASE STUDIES ON SUCH HOUSES WAS A

TASK AS THE TECHNOLOGY USED IS IMPROVED

HOMETHE FINAL BOUNDARY DEFINED BY FAMILY .

A CONCEPT THAT HAS BEEN DOMINANT EVER SINCE MAN

STARTED TO LIVE IN PAIRS.

HOWEVER THROUGH THE YEARS,HOMES HAVE EVOLVED FROM

MERELY BOUNDARIES TO CONCEPTS THAT RANGES FROM

PALACE TO HOLIDAY HOMES TO SLUMS.

IT TRANSCENDED ITS PURPOSE OF BEING JUST A SHELTER TO A

STATUS SYMBOL IN MANY CASES.

FEW EMINENT ARCHITECTS HAVE CONSTANTLY FOUGHT AND

STILL FIGHT TO BRING SOME BALANCE .

LAURIE BAKER – A SIMPLE GANDHIAN WHO SINGLEHANDEDLY

BROUGHT A SIGNIFICANT CHANGE IN THE MINDLESS

CONSTRUCTION PRACTICES OF SOUTH INDIA ABIDING BY THE

LAWS OF SUSTAINABLE ARCHITECTURE.

HE DID NOT FOLLOW ANY TRADITION OR RULES BUT THOUGHT

AS A COMMON MAN WOULD- HIS RULES WERE SIMPLE – BUILD

SIMPLE , LIVE SIMPLE.

HOWEVER NEW ERA REQUIRES MORE FROM SUSTAINABLE

ARCHITECTS THAN JUST BUILD ORDINARY WITH SUSTAINABLE

MATERIALS.

RATHER EMBARK ON A JOURNEY TO DISCOVER THE WIDE

VARIETY OF FORMS THAT WILL DO JUSTICE TO SUSTAINABLE

MATERIALS.

DETACH THE CONDITIONALITY ASSOCIATED WITH SUSTAINABLE

ARCHITECTURE, THEREBY REMOVING THE TAG OF ‘LOW COST

LOOK’.

THAT IS WHAT IS AIMED IN THE FOLLOWING PROJECTS.

MEET VINU DANIEL, THE YOUNG ARCHITECT WHO SAYS THAT HIS

MEETING WITH LAURIE BAKER CHANGED HIS DIRECTION OF LIFE. VINU

SAYS HE GAINED THE CONFIDENCE THAT VARIOUS DESIGNS ARE NOT

JUST CELEBRATION BUT IT CAN ACTUALLY BE CONSTRUCTED.

THE PROJECTS TAKEN FOR CASE STUDY ARE HUMBLE ABODES FOR

HOLIDAYING AND RELAXING DESIGNED BY AR. VINU DANIEL.

’THESE STRUCTURES ALSO FULFILLS ITS COST REGULATIONS, WHILE

AIMING TO ‘TOUCH THE SKY’.

DESTROYING ALL PRECONCIEVED NOTIONS OF MUD ARCHITECTURE,

EVEN EARLY EGYPTIAN MASONARY TECHNIQUES DATED BACK TO 2500

B.C TO LATEST LOAD BEARING AND DISASTER RESISTANT TECHNIQUES

(PERFECTED BY AR. SATPREM MAIINI- TEACHER OF AR. VINU DANIEL)

WHEN THE CLIENT DECIDED TO BUILD A HOUSE THERE WERE

THREE FACTORS WHICH MAJORITY CHARACTERISED THE BIRTH

OF THE HOUSE.

FIRSTLY AND FOREMOST SUSTAINABLE ARCHITECTURE, SECONDLY

UNIQUENESS, THIRDLY AND FINALLY THE PROJECT MUST BE COST

EFFECTIVE.

THE GROUND FLOOR PLAN COMPRISED OF DRAWING, DINING

SEPERATED BY A POND AT THE CENTER LIGHT AND

VENTILATION IS DRAWN THROUGH THE OPENING AT THE TOP

OF POND THERE BY DISPERSING LIGHT FOR BOTH DRAWING

AND DINING ROOMS. THE MASTER BEDROOM WITH ATTACHED

TOILET AND GUEST BEDROOM, SEPERATED FROM THE SEMI

PRIVATE SPACES FOLLOWED BY KITCHEN, STORE AND WORK

AREA THE WEST END.

FIRST FLOOR PLAN IS A GRADUAL SLOPING PROJECTION OF

THE GROUND FLOOR THE CENTRAL STAIRCASE ON THE TOP OF

THE POND.

THERE ARE JUST TWO BEDROOMS, ONE ATTACHED TOILET AND

A COMMON TOILET. BOTH THE BEDROOMS ARE SEPERATED BY

A BALCONY.

CLIMATIC RESPONSEIN COMPARISON WITH THE TROPICAL HOUSES IN KERALA

STAGE 1 : WINDOWS/ VENTILATION HOLES

ONE OF THE MAIN FEATURES OF THE TROPICAL HOUSES IS THE

PLINTH HEIGHT AND VENTILATION HOLES THAT ALLOW THE HEATED

AIR TO TRAVEL OUTSIDE, THEREBY COOLING THE INTERIORS FROM

HUMID HEAT OF THE EXTERIOR.

STAGE 2 : COURTYARD

AN ESSENTIAL FEATURE IN ALL TROPICAL HOUSES , THE

COURTYARD SYMBOLISES LIGHT AND VENTILATION IN THE SYSTEM

OF UMBRELLA ROOF STRUCTURES OF SOUTHERN TROPICS. THE

SAME HAS BEEN APPLIED IN THE RESIDENCE. IN THIS CASE AN

INVERTED DOME.

STAGE 3 : HIGH CEILING EXHAUST

THIS INGENIOUS METHOD EXISTENT IN TRADITIONAL HOMES,

WHERE THE ATTIC AREA (UPPER DECK WHERE HEATED AIR GETS

STAGNANT ) HAS EXHAUST HOLES CALLED “GABLE”. HOWEVER

GABLES WERE REMOVED FROM MODERN HOMES. IN THIS

RESIDENCE A NEW IDEA HAS BEEN BROUGHT FORWARD. A LARGE

GABLE JALIWORK IN FIRST FLOOR ALLOWING ALL THE

ACCUMULATIVE HEAT TO EXCAPE OUTSIDE.

CONSTRUCTION DETAILS

THIS FLEXIBLE CONCEPT REQUIRED A LOT INNOVATIVE

CONSTRUCTION METHODS TO MAKE IT AS COST EFFECTIVE AS

POSSIBLE . THEY ALSO REQUIRED BUILDING BEAMS WHICH CURVE

AND RISE AS THEY PROCEED. IT WOULD HAVE BEEN INCREDIBLY

DIFFICULT TO MAKE A CONVENIONAL RCC BEAM . HOWEVER MUD

COMPOSITE BEAM WAS MADE IN THIS PROCESS.

3) ROOFING

THIS WAS THE MOST DIFFICULT PART OF THE WHOLE

STRUCTURE. HOWEVER INDIVIDUAL PIECES OR FERRO CEMENT

CHANNELS RATIO 1:3 C:S , STACKED INDIVIDUALLY HELPED TO

REALIZE THE FLUIDAL SHAPE. FINALLY THE PIECES WERE

JOINED BY 10 CM CONCRETING 1:1.5:3 FOLLOWED BY 20 CM

THICK SCREED 1:8 c:b:a STEP BY STEP PROCEDURE IS SHOWN

4) JALI WORK

THE FIRST FLOOR OF THE BUILDING REQUIRED A LOT OF

VENTILATION HOLES TO REDUCE THE HEAT GENERATED IN THE

GROUND FLOOR. FINALLY A SOLUTION WAS DRAWN . A LARGE

PERFORATED JALLIED WALL 3M HIGH WOULD REDUCE THE

HEAT GENERATED IN THE TOP PORTION OF THE BUILDING.

HOWEVER THE CHALLENGE LAY IN MAKING A LOAD BEARING

WALL WHICH ITSELF WOULD BE LIGHT.

WITHOUT CUTTING ANY SURROUNDING TREES AND WITHOUT

THE SUPPLY OF ELECTRICITY, IT MAKES THIS AN ECO-FRIENDLY

PROJECT. THE UNIQUENESS IS THAT THERE IS NO MEANS OF

TRANSPORT APART FROM THEM ROUTE THROUGH THE WATER

BODY. INSPITE OF THESE DIFFICULTIES THIS HOUSE BECAME

AN IDEALISTIC APPROACH TOWARDS ARCHITECTURE IN

TODAYS WORLD. IN THE MIDST OF LUXURIOUS LIFESTYLE AND

SYMBOLS, THIS SMALL MUD HOUSE COMES LIKE A COOL

BREEZE.

CONCEPT

A LOW COST HOUSE WITH THE USAGE OF CONVENTIONAL

ENERGY GENERATED BE IT SOLAR ENERGY, RAIN WATER

HARVESTING OR REUSING OF MATERIALS FOR BUILDING THIS

HOUSE IS A VERY APT IN THAT PLOT.

WHAT IS THE USE OF A HOUSE IF THERE IS NO DECENT PLANET

TO PUT IT ON? AR.VINU HAS GIVEN AN ANSWER TO THIS

QUESTION BY BUILDING THIS HOUSE BY CONSERVATION OF

RESOURCES. FINDING AND DEVELOPING TECHNOLOGIES ON

THE SITE ITSELF IS DEFINITELY A TASK AND HE HAS ACHIEVED

IT.

AS THE NATURE HERE IS IN ABUNDANCE , THE CONCEPT OF

OPENESS AND EARTHINESS IS GIVEN. HE MADE SURE THAT THE

WALLS SHOULDN’T BE A HINDRANCE IN SPACE PLANNING AND

MADE IT SPACIOUS WITH BOLD DESIGN ELEMENTS THAT GIVES

A FEELING OF MASCULITY IN ARCHITECTURE.

STATEMENT IN THE FORM OF VAULT LIKE STRUCTURE FROM ITS

ROOF FLATTENING TO THE GROUND.

THE WINDMILLS AND SOLAR PANELS STAND AS PART OF THE

ELEVATION.

EVEN THOUGH THIS HOUSE IS MADE OF MUD, THE DESIGN

ASPECT IS RELATIVELY MORE OF CONTEMPORARY STYLE WITH

MUD FINISHED WALLS.

KERALA.

THIS GLASS DOOR AND THE FOLLOWING GLASS PANELS IS PART

OF THE MAIN FRONT VIEW OF THE HOUSE.

NORMALLY IN ENERGY EFFICIENT HOUSES THE USAGE OF GLASS

SHOULD BE LESS BUT THIS SITE REQUIRES MORE OF IT SO THAT

THE BEAUTY OF NATURE SURROUNDING IT IS REFLECTED INSIDE

TO GIVE IT A COZY ATMOSPHERE.

THE OTHER INSIDE WHICH ALSO ACTS AS A ROOM DIVIDER

BETWEEN THE LIVING SPACE AND KITCHEN.

AR.VINU CALLS THESE THE DEBRIS WALLS AS IT IS MADE OUT OF

WASTE FROM THE OLD HOUSE WHICH USED TO BE ON THAT

PLOT.

THERE IS NOT MUCH SEATING ARRANGEMENT IS GIVEN. ONLY A

SMALL COFFEE TABLE SETUP IS THERE AS PART OF THE LIVING

AREA.
