Description

Enjoy the countryside view on the 4 hours drive from the port to Phnom Penh. Upon arrival in Phnom Pehn, you will drive through

busy traffic to visit the elegant Royal Palace, the home of His Majesty Preah Bat Samdech Preah Norodom Sihanouk and her

Majesty Preah Reach ‘ Mohesey Norodom Monineath Sihanouk. The Palace is actually a number of structures within a pagoda-style

compound. An awe-inspiring sight, the throne room, or the main building has a tiered roof topped by a 59m tower. Then stroll along

the pathway to also visit Silver Pagoda, the royal chapel, located within the Royal Palace grounds but walled off in a separate

enclosure. The silver Pagoda takes its name from the estimated 5,000 silver tiles covering the floor of the main temple. Each tile is

made from a kilogram of silver. Although plundered by the Khmer Rouge, the Silver Pagoda contains some superb Buddha statuary;

a few artefacts from the royal collection are displayed in glass cases.

Next you will stop for a lunch of Cambodian specialities at Bopha Phnom Penh Titanic Restaurant by the river. After lunch, visit the

National Museum designed by French archaeologist and painter George Grislier, and constructed in traditional style by Cambodian

craftsmen in 1917 and first opened in 1920. Although it is small, the museum harbours an astonishing wealth of Khmer stone,

bronze, and wooden sculpture.

The last stop is for you to explore the Central Market (close at 17.00 hrs.) which was built in 1937 and is a masterpiece of Art Deco

design - perhaps one of the finest examples of this era in Southeast Asia. The building features a huge central dome with four wings

where consists of numerous stalls that sell goods ranging from gold and silver, antique coins, money exchange, men and women

apparels, clocks, books, flowers, food, fabrics, shoes, souvenirs, fish, seafood, dessert, luggage, and countless other products. Then

you will return to port and reboard to the ship.

What we will do

Our first stop is the magnificent Buddhist temple of Wat Phra Yai, located on the small islet of Koh Phan, connected to Koh

Samui via a tarmacked road.

Here we can admire the famous imposing Great Golden Buddha, a giant representation of Siddhrtha Gautama sitting in

meditation. 12 metres high, it dominates the landscape from a hill inside the temple.

We will then visit the majestic temple of Wat Plai Laem, home to the evocative statue of Guanyin, Goddess of mercy and

compassion, which appears before our eyes as soon as we pass by the lovely lake populated by small fish.

After this full immersion in Buddhist spirituality, we move towards a coconut plantation to discover how the owner teaches

monkeys to harvest the ripest nuts from the palm trees.

We then visit the majestic temple of Wat Plai Laem, home to the evocative statue of Guanyin, Goddess of mercy and

compassion, which appears before our eyes as soon as we pass by the lovely lake populated by small fish.

The last stop on our excursion is a coconut tree plantation, where we have the chance to observe monkeys harvesting

What we will do

Our thrilling journey back in time starts with the fascinating ruins of the old city forming the so-called Ayutthaya Historical Park

and declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991. While exploring the area, we make out its original urban layout made

up of moats, palaces and majestic temples decorated with rows of enigmatic stone Buddha statues.

The wealth of pagodas and dwellings and the large number of navigable canals led to it being known as Venice of the East.

We then visit the enchanting and important complex of the Bang Pa-In Royal Palace, also known as the Summer Palace,

which was built in 1632. The current buildings are the result of a restoration commissioned between 1872 and 1889 by King

Chulalongkorn and are eclectic examples of Thai, European and Chinese architecture.

The palace is made up of five imposing buildings: a lovely Thai-style pavilion right in the middle of an artificial lake, a two-

storey pavilion of European influence for official ceremonies, a pavilion which was once used as residence during the high tide

season, a Chinese-style pavilion where the court used to live during the cool rainy season and an observatory located on an

islet offering breath-taking views of the surrounding countryside.

After a thrilling elephant ride (2 people per animal), we visit the Wat Phra Sri Sanphet, the most important temple in the

ancient complex of the Grand Royal Palace made up of three large stupas dating back to the family of King Rama Thibodi II

and his father, who both lived here in the 15th century, and which had the same function as Bangkok’s Emerald Buddha

Temple.

Our excursion continues with the Wihan Phra Mongkhon Bophit, where one of the largest seated Buddha statues in the world

is located together will smaller statues found in the same area.

The vihara (hall) was destroyed in 1767 when the Burmese ransacked Ayutthaya and was rebuilt in the original style in 1956.

Finally, we visit the Wat Yai Chai Mongkon, a majestic meditation pagoda built in 1357 by King U Thong and whose remains

can be seen from afar.

We end our historical excursion with a buffet lunch of Thai specialities in a local restaurant before heading back to the port.

What we will do

We leave the port behind us and venture inland towards the Batu caves, a natural splendour which has no shortage of visitors.

We venture the underground karst system made up of three main caves and various smaller ones: the tallest one houses a

Hindu sanctuary, which can be accessed using a stairway with 272 steps, allowing you to climb the steep and jagged walls of

this limestone surface.

Then we head to the Petronas Towers, the tallest twin skyscrapers in the world, which symbolise an open door to the future

and offer spectacular panoramic views of Kuala Lumpur.

We reach to the *Sky Bridge, an enclosed tunnel that is a real engineering feat and joins the two towers 171 metres high,

allowing us to walk from one to the other. Looking out through the huge windows we can admire endless views of the city.

We then go even higher to the observatory on the 86th floor at the impressive height of 360 metres above the ground. In

addition to the breathtaking views, we can also admire interesting information displays made employing state-of-the-art

technology.

After the visit, we will have free time to spend in the Suria KLCC shopping centre, one of the best in Kuala Lumpur, which is

located inside the Petronas Towers.

We can wander around the countless shops and stop at one of the numerous restaurants for a tasty lunch before gathering at

the meeting point and returning to the ship.

Photo stop at the Petronas Twin Towers

What we will do

We start our tour of the Malaysian capital with the National Monument, located in the Kuala Lumpur Lake Gardens erected in

memory of those who lost their lives defending their homeland. This imposing monument was sculpted in 1966 by Felix de

Weldon, who also created the Iwo Jima Memorial at the Arlington cemetery.

Through parks and lush gardens, our itinerary takes us to the Islamic Arts Museum which covers 1,300 years of history of

Islamic arts and displays the amazing results, often little known, of one of the greatest civilisations that ever existed on our

planet.

With its vast collections of miniatures, paintings and ceramics, it seems almost impossible that a single museum can do justice

to the splendour of this ancient civilisation.

Before venturing into the heart of the city, we pass in front of the old railway stationand the general offices of the Malaysian

railway.

We then stop at Rumah Penghulu to visit a perfectly restored Malaysian house, once home of the local tribal chief.

Located in the gardens of the Badan Warisan Heritage Centre, it stands out thanks to its unique architectural style, a form of

Malaysian art passed on from generation to generation.

After a brief stop, we finally reach the Petronas Twin Towers to take a few pictures and do some shopping.

What we will do

We set off from the port of Langkawi for Kilim Jetty where we board small 8 seater fibreglass boats which take us to the

geopark.

We embark on this adventure, equipped with binoculars and cameras, in one of the most spectacular geoparks of the whole

Asian continent. The Langkawi Geopark was the first to be founded in the extreme north-west of the Malaysian Peninsula. We

visit a fish farm where wooden platforms allow us to walk around between the different tanks to observe the different species

of fish.

As we go along the trail through the Geopark we can see majestic sea eagles eagerly diving into the sea to catch their prey, or

clouds of bats enjoying their customary daytime sleep, hanging head down in a rocky cavity formed millions of years ago,

which also offers the unique and extraordinary spectacle of a succession of stalactites and stalagmites in a truly unspoiled

habitat.

LANGKAWI (MALESIA)EXPLORING THE ISLAND OF LEGENDS: LANGKAWI

PAGE 41Costa Fortuna - Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, India, Oman, Greece, Italy

PRINTED DOCUMENT 08.07.2019

Our excursion begins with a visit to a farm where latex is extracted from a rubber tree. Although the famous "rubber tree" is

native to the Amazon region, towards the end of the 19th century it was exported to Asia and caught on mainly in South-East

Asia where it has flourished ever since. The production of natural rubber, obtained from the extraction of latex from the plant

by making perpendicular incisions in the bark, is a very lucrative business for the island. Here we can see the skill of local

workers as they make these incisions to extract the precious liquid.

We continue on our excursion and visit a place that is quite renowned on the island because it is linked to one of the main

local legends. The Mahsuri Mausoleum is a must for anybody visiting the island. Mahsuri is the most popular legendary

character in Langkawi: according to the legend she was an extremely beautiful woman, the daughter of a couple who had

landed on the island in search of a better life. She became the wife of a valiant warrior and when her husband left to fight in

the war, she was falsely accused of adultery by the village chief's wife, who had become desperately jealous of her beauty.

Although she protested her innocence, she was sentenced to death and executed by repeated stabbing with a keris (a

traditional Malay weapon). It is said that she bled white blood from her wounds, a sign of her innocence, and that before

breathing her last breath, Mahsuri cursed the island, predicting bad luck for seven generations. Today the seven generation

curse has now come to an end and many people in Langkawi believe that the island's recent prosperity coincides with the end

of the curse.

And as a fitting end we move on to another truly unique attraction: Eagle Square, dominated by the gigantic sculpture of an

eagle about to soar into the sky. The eagle is the symbol of the island, whose name Langkawi in colloquial Malay means island

of the "reddish brown eagle", like the one here. We end our excursion at the Handicraft Studio, where we can make some

purchases and take home some typical souvenirs from this wonderful island.

What we will do

The Island of Langkawi is home to around 200 bird species, many of which are migrants which come to spend the winter here in the

warm climate, from November to April. This obviously makes it the ideal place for all bird watching enthusiasts. * Langkawi boasts a

huge variety of ecosystems and natural habitats making it a comfortable resting place for birds. This is why a wide variety of avifauna

is always present on the island. An ecosystem like that of this authentic tropical paradise made up of lowlands, tropical forests and

mangroves, reed beds, rice fields, orchards, steppes and marshy lakes offers an ideal environment for birds, both migratory and

resident. * In our 5 hours of bird watching, we may see up to 20-30 different bird species which populate the jungle, the rice fields

or the river which crosses Langkawi. * The first lookout point is Gunung Raya, the highest mountain on the island. With an altitude of

881 m, the mountain dominates the island, commanding an excellent view for sightings, mainly of mountain birds. * We then

proceed and descend towards the lowlands and the rice fields in search of birds that do not venture to great heights, preferring the

more peaceful and sleepy atmosphere of the marshes, the reed beds and the plains in general. We can really have fun with our

sightings, keeping ready to take photographs and capture images of these wonderful, brightly coloured specimens. At the end of our

expedition we return to the ship.

The processing of this type of dried fruit is considered one of the city’s main activities.

Mangalore in fact exports 75% of the coffee and cashew nuts produced in India to various countries such as the US, Canada

and Europe.

We continue our tour with a rice processing facility.

Rice is a very popular ingredient and a staple food in southern India.

Most Indian dishes use rice as a base.

During our visit, we will also learn about the process starting in paddies and ending with rice production.

It is a rather simple yet interesting procedure that is worth learning about.

We will then head to the local market, where we can find different types of fish, flowers and other typical regional products.

Before going back, we have the chance to try some local cuisine with a restaurant lunch.

Afterwards, out Tuk-Tuk will take us back to the port.

In Jebel Qara we will visit the evocative tomb of Prophet Ayoub, better known by his biblical name Job.

On the way to Mughsail beach, we will admire beautiful landscapes unfolding before our eyes.

Amongst the magnificent beaches located to the west of Salalah, Mughsail is one of the best known for its "sea geysers", which

emerge from the rocky protrusions just before the coast. With a little luck, as it is not always possible to rely on natural

phenomena, we will see sensational water jets and lather coming out of the natural openings dug into the rock and which, at

times, can reach up to 15 metres.

We will then head to the Al Husn Souk, the old market where we will have some free time for shopping and purchasing local,

What we will do

We will begin our tour with a visit to the archaeological site of Al-Balid, where we will see artefacts which demonstrate the

archaeological, historic and cultural heritage of the region.

We will proceed to the fishermen's village of Taqah, third largest "city" in Dhofar, which has always been inhabited by farmers

and fishermen. Taqah is presently famous, primarily for its tasty sardines.

From Taqah we will head to the Bay of Khor Rori, where it is believed the destroyed city of Sumhuram once stood, capital of

the exotic incense trade of ancient Arabia. In ancient times, Dhofar was an important hub for incense trading. It is no

coincidence that the Three Wise Men who brought this gift to Baby Jesus came from Dhofar. Nowadays, incense is not used

as it once was and these trees are now only found in a few locations (Yemen and Oman). The excavations served to prove the

existence of an ancient inhabited centre which held maritime commercial relationships with the Far East as well as far-off

Greece. Additionally, it is believed that this is the place where the palace from the legend of the Queen of Saba stood, which is

presently in ruins and undergoing restoration.

We will stop for lunch in a hotel in Salalah.

On the return to the ship, we will stop in Mughsail beach: Three kilometres of marvellous white, unspoilt beaches, framed by

high cliffs on both sides and numerous picnic areas. These extremely white beaches are known for their sea geysers: with a bit

of luck, we will see sensational water jets coming out of the natural openings dug into the rock and which, at times, can reach

up to 15 metres.

Finally, we will visit the souk, an old market where we will have some free time for shopping.

What we will do

We will leave the port behind us to discover ancient Olympia, the sacred city of the Peloponnese, which stands at the foot of

the gentle slopes of Mount Kronian. You'll find it hard not to be moved by such an impressive place. We will tour the

excavations, begun by the Germans in 1875 and as yet ongoing, where we will be able to admire the sanctuary which housed

a wonderful complex of monuments within the sacred enclosure (Altis), including the Temple of Zeus, the Temple of Hera

(where the Olympic torch-lighting ceremony is held), the Gymnasium, the Palestra and the Stadium. The temple dedicated to

Zeus is the most famous: it contained the statue of the deity by Phaedias, considered one of the Seven Wonders of the

ancient world.

Let's continue our itinerary to admire one of the most beautiful collections in Greece, preserved in the Archaeological Museum

of Olympia. We will marvel at the finds from Ancient Greece, at the splendid metopes from the Temple of Zeus and the Nike

of Peonius, to end in style with the splendid statue of Hermes with Dionysus, the masterpiece by Praxiteles discovered in the

Temple of Hera.

Ancient Olympia: archaeological excavations

Modern Olympia

What we will do

We leave the port of Katakolon to discover the ancient sacred city of Olympia, full of temples, monuments, priests' houses,

athletes' homes and public buildings. A gem set in a valley crossed by the River Alfios in the north-west Peloponnese, the city

held the famous Olympic Games in honour of Zeus every four years. Here in 776 BC, a list of winners was drawn up for the

first time, presumably the results of the very first Olympics in history.

As we stroll around ancient Olympia amongst the archaeological excavations, it feels as though we can still hear the spectators

shouting to encourage the athletes and breathe the festive atmosphere, which accompanied those 5, very long days, during

which the best athletes challenged each other in the various sports: wrestling matches, charriot and horse races, the

pentathlon and pankration (a primitive form of boxing). Let's delve into the past and discover the little secrets of the

competition, which was first accessible only for male athletes of Greek origin and was later opened up to young Romans.

Perhaps not everyone knows that women and slaves were banned from the town, the sanctuaries and the terraces, at the risk

of a terrible death by being thrown from a nearby cliff.

We will stop in the ancient squares, where traders and citizens once met to carry out their business.

At the end of our guided tour, we have to wake up from the spell of the past and return to reality if we are not to miss the

chance of discovering the streets of modern Olympia. We can taste a typical, strong, Greek coffee, savour a cool glass of Ouzo

or, if we wish, purchase a souvenir to remind us back home of a piece of history which made us live a dream.

What we will do

We will leave the tiny fishing village of Katakolon and take a short walk to the typical farm near Olympia to discover Greece at

its most authentic. Thanks to the owners warm welcome, we will feel at home straight away. The party begins with a toast of

welcome with Ouzo, a local liqueur used to celebrate special events or just to welcome home friends and family. We will go

and see how they grow olives and learn about the various activities of this family-run farm, deeply rooted in the agricultural

traditions, which the people in this area have always followed to make a living.

Our tour of the estate amidst the olive groves, vineyards and orchards will help us rediscover the health benefits of contact

with the land. Of course, there'll be plenty of animals, too: lambs, sheep, ponies, dogs, cats, pheasants, peacocks, doves and

hares. Our morning will end with a visit to the chicken run, where we will meet geese, birds, chickens and other animals.

It's time for a snack and we will restore body and soul with a tasting of delicious, uniquely flavoured local products,

accompanied by the cheerful notes of the Sirtaki, the traditional Greek dance. Anyone can join in the dancing right in the

middle of this exciting Greek party. We will dance and eat with the owners in a warm, relaxing atmosphere, which reveals how

important hospitality is for the Greek people. According to an ancient tradition, where families were duty bound to welcome

travellers in honour of Zeus, a guest is sacred.

We haven't forgotten the kids, who will have an unforgettable day, surrounded by nature and animals in a peaceful, serene

environment. Accompanied by staff from the estate, our younger visitors will take centre stage in the farm activities. They will

get to feed the ponies and help prepare some Greek salad and Souvlaki kebabs to cook on the barbecue to enjoy alongside

their parents.

Our younger guests will get a chance to become little Zorbas and join their parents on the dance floor to learn the typical

Greek dance.

After this experience full of emotions which will remain forever in our memories, we return to our ship, leaving a part of our

hearts here in this authentic place, known for its spirit of friendship and deep respect.

What we will see

Town of Atrani: historic centre, the Piazzetta, San Salvatore de Birecto and Santa Maria Maddalena (external visit)

What we will do

We leave Naples behind us and head south towards the Amalfi Coast to discover the enchanting small town of Atrani:

sandwiched between the sea and the plunging cliff and almost connected physically to Amalfi, it is located on a strip of land at

the estuary of the Dragone river.

Surrounded by rocky peaks and a picturesque bay, Atrani is the best-preserved coastal town with a typically Medieval

structure.

Once there, we can explore the centre - we can stroll in the maze of alleyways, steps and archways and let ourselves be

enchanted by the contrast of light and shadows in the characteristic squares, the white façades and the colourful gardens and

vegetable plots.

We reach the Piazzetta (town square), the heart of the city, and a marvellous urban courtyard where the locals and tourists

from all over the world meet from early in the morning and late at night between bars and restaurant tables and on the steps

of the church of San Salvatore.

We take the chance to visit some of the numerous churches, a source of pride to the town due to their artistic treasures and,

most of all, for the charm and setting of the places where they were erected. The church of San Salvatore de Birecto stands

out among all of them and is where the foremost government authorities were appointed. It was built in 940 but was later

What we will do

We leave the port for an excursion that takes us to the major places of interest in Naples: from the imposing Castle known as

the Maschio Angioino - built 700 years ago by Charles of Anjou and subsequently the sumptuous residence of kings and

viceroys - to the San Carlo, one of the most beautiful opera houses in Europe, and on to the Galleria Umberto I, the

spectacular arcade built between 1887 and 1890 as part of an effort to revamp the city.

We then cross the Piazza del Plebiscito, one of the most famous and beautiful of Naples' piazzas. With a surface area of

25,000 square metres it is one of the biggest piazzas in Italy and often serves as a venue for major events. Here we can see

the magnificent Palazzo Reale, one of the four residences used by the Bourbon Royal Family in the period of the Kingdom of

the Two Sicilies, and the Church of St. Francis of Paola, which features an impressive pronaos with six Ionic columns.

the west of Naples and offers sumptuous views of the gulf and the city.

At the end of this part of the tour we cross Via Caracciolo, the street named after the hero of the Neapolitan Republic who

was captured and sentenced to death by Nelson in 1799. This coastline is truly breathtaking and is indeed considered one of

the most beautiful coastal panoramas in the world. Once it was only the beach that separated the road from the sea, but now

there is also a substantial man-made reef. At this point we have some free time before we return to the ship.

eruption of the volcano Vesuvius in 79 AD. Excavations of this world-famous site, which started in the 18th century, and were

resumed in the last century, brought to light finds of inestimable value that have left a profound impression on millions of

visitors.

Our excursion starts at Porta Marina, through which we access the Forum, the centre of political and economic life of the city.

The area is dominated by the Roman Temple of Jupiter, built around the year 250 BC in honour of the god Jupiter, and the

Basilica, the most imposing public building in Pompei, which was used both as a court of law and a place for conducting

business transactions. It was built between the years 130 and 120 BC.

We then go along the Street of Abundance, Pompeii's lower decumanus (east-west oriented road in a Roman city). The name

originates from an ornamental bas-relief on a fountain located in the initial stretch of the road near the Forum. It is still richly

decorated and, as such, offers the most interesting route for our visit to the excavations. Along this street we can see many of

the most beautiful houses that belonged to the rich bourgeoisie of Pompeii, some of which have two floors.

Indeed, from here we come to the House of the Ancient Hunt, which dates to the mid 2nd century BC. The sophisticated, and

well-preserved frescoes and the typical "atrium" plan leave no doubt about the elevated social status of the owner. We also

visit the House of the Faun - a private noble dwelling of considerable dimensions (3000 square metres) that owes its name to

a bronze statue in the centre of the impluvium - and the Thermal Baths.

The visit to the archaeological excavations involves walking for approximately 2 hours.

It is recommended that you wear comfortable shoes for the tour of the excavations.

Anacapri: Villa San Michele and its fine 17th-century furniture and archaeological artefacts

Capri: Piazza Umberto I, Faraglioni (sea stacks)

What we will do

We leave on board a hydrofoil from the dock where the ship is berthed and we reach the island of Capri, an island of ragged

coastlines, natural caves, sheer sea cliffs and high grounds covered in vineyards and gardens, where villas and other dwellings

are embedded seamlessly in the surrounding environment.

From Marina Grande, where the hydrofoil berths, we board a minibus that takes us along a scenic route to Anacapri, the

island's biggest town, which is situated on the northern side of Mount Solaro. The "Ana-" prefix of the name Anacapri comes

from Greek and it means "up" or "above".

During our stop in Anacapri we have the opportunity to visit Villa San Michele, the late 19th-century home of Axel Munthe,

the famous Swedish doctor and writer. The villa, which is rather eclectic and heterogeneous from an architectural point of

view, is located in the Capodimonte area, on the edge of a cliff that overhangs the Bagni di Tiberio below. Immersed in a

wonderful landscape, between the green of the Mediterranean maquis and the cobalt blue of the sea, the villa houses

precious 17th century furniture and archaeological remains, amongst which there are fragments of sarcophagi, busts, Roman

floors, marble, columns and a Greek tomb.

We continue on to the town of Capri, the capital and hub of tourism and the island's social scene. We stop in the famous, and

very central, Piazza Umberto I better known as the Piazzetta which is surrounded on all sides, like a courtyard, by small white

houses. It is impossible not to stop here, even just for a coffee or an aperitif. The Piazzetta is the pulsing heart of Capri, the

cornerstone around which island life revolves and the "world's living room" in that it is a meeting place and key attraction for

everyone, from tourists to major figures from the worlds of cinema, fashion, politics, and business.

Before returning by minibus to Marina Grande, from where we go back to Naples, we have the chance to take some

photographs, do a little shopping or enjoy a romantic walk and admire the Faraglioni, three spurs of rock to the south east of

the island that rise out of the blue waters creating a spectacular scene.

We enjoy a journey back in time at the archaeological site of Herculaneum, which has preserved its ancient treasures in almost

perfect condition.

What we will see

Archaeological excavations in Herculaneum

Houses

Villa of the Papyri

Collegium of the Augustales

Suburban Baths and Forum Baths

Theatre of Herculaneum

What we will do

Accompanied by a guide, we leave the port of Naples and head south to Herculaneum. In ancient times, the local Roman

aristocracy chose Herculaneum as the location for their finest and most luxurious villas, the majority of which commanded

magnificent views of the sea.

While the wooden structures of Pompeii were burned by the ashes, the destruction of Herculaneum was caused by a flood of

hot mud that sealed and therefore protected entire homes. This is why today in the archaeological site of Herculaneum

visitors can admire inlaid floors, mosaics and even paintings that are in almost perfect condition. The archaeological area,

together with the ruins of Pompeii and the villas of Oplontis, was added to the list of UNESCO World Heritage sites in 1997.

The excavation work at Herculaneum began officially in 1738 using the method of underground tunnels. The period between

1828 and 1875 saw a campaign of "open air" excavations but these were interrupted for a very long time. Almost all of the

area which constitutes the present archaeological site only came to light in 1942.

During our visit to the archaeological excavations we discover the beauty of this place, with its wealth of unique and fascinating

remains. Along the way we discover many luxurious houses, each of which preserves special features: mosaics, paintings,

wooden doors or partitions, statues or splendid terraces. One of the most magnificent residences is undoubtedly the Villa of

the Papyri in which 58 bronze and 21 marble statues were found, in addition to 1,700 papyrus scrolls (which explains the

name), which were discovered, enclosed in cases, in the library.

There is also ample evidence of religious life in this place, demonstrated by the Collegium of the Augustales. Dedicated to

Augustus, it was always protected by a guard, whose skeleton was found inside, lying in bed. Even recreational activities had an

important role, as the presence of the Suburban Baths, the Forum Baths, the Gymnasium and the Theatre of Herculaneum

suggest.

It is recommended that you wear comfortable shoes for the tour of the excavations.

contrasts and treasures: Naples.

What we will see

Cappella Sansevero, Anatomical machines

Napoli Sotterranea

Tasting of typical products

What we will do

We begin our excursion by heading to the heart of the historic centre to visit the Cappella Sansevero, a true treasure trove

where we can admire priceless works of art and oddities shrouded in mystery. The credit for this splendour must go to

Raimondo di Sangro, Prince of Sansevero, who decorated the family chapel with frescoes and sculptures in the 18th century .

In addition to the works of art, the Chapel hosts two "creatures" devised by the Prince, who was a scientist and an alchemist,

together with Giuseppe Salerno, a doctor from Palermo. They are known as Anatomical machines: two skeletons, one of a

man and the other of a woman, standing upright, their circulatory systems almost perfectly preserved. Some notary's deeds

have been found that date these creations to 1763/64. The techniques and materials used to preserve the system of veins

and arteries in such an exceptional way remain a mystery to this very day.

After visiting the chapel, we take a walk around the historic centre which leads us to Via San Gregorio Armeno, the famous

"via dei presepi" (street of the nativity scenes), where skilled craftsmen work all year round to create the small models used in

the nativity scenes for which the city is famous. This street, which is popularly known as "San Liguoro", bears traits of the typical

Greek town plan, with its stenopoi (secondary streets) .

The next stop is Napoli Sotterranea (Naples Underground), a system of catacombs, tunnels, secret passages and Greek-

Roman aqueducts that runs for hundreds of kilometres beneath the city. It is a fascinating, mysterious place which, over the

centuries, has been used as a place of pagan worship and a Christian catacomb, as well as housing granaries and water tanks.

During the Second World War, it was used as an air-raid shelter.

What we will do

We leave the Port of Naples by coach and head for Caserta and its splendid Royal Palace.

The Royal Palace of Caserta, which was once the historic residence of Naples' Bourbon royal family, is recognised by UNESCO

as a World Heritage Site. It is one of the most visited, and renowned examples of Italy's rich artistic heritage. The Bourbon King

Charles of Naples, struck by the beauty of the landscape at Caserta and anxious that Naples have a worthy seat of

government, decided in 1750 to build a residence that could compare with Versailles.

Construction started on 20 January 1752 and continued without any interruption until 1759, the year when Charles had to

move to Spain. At that point construction work slowed down and when the architect, Luigi Vanvitelli, died in 1773 the palace

had not yet been completed. It was therefore his children, Louis and Charles who completed this monumental palace. The

palace has a rectangular plan and is made up of blocks surrounding four internal courtyards, covering a surface area of

approximately 47,000 square metres.

The Royal Palace is surrounded by extensive grounds that are three kilometres long and cover approximately 120 hectares.

They comprise two sections: the Italian garden and the English garden, the former characterized by various fountains and the

famous Grand Cascade, and the latter by thick vegetation.

The Royal Palace of Caserta is considered a masterpiece of architectural perfection and harmony. One of the largest royal

residences in the world, it is largely the product of the artistic genius of Luigi Vanvitelli.

What we will do

We leave the Port of Naples and we head for the motorway, making our way through the towns surrounding Vesuvius to

reach Sorrento, the most beautiful and famous of the towns on the eponymous peninsula and one of the jewels of the Gulf of

Naples. According to the legend, it is in these waters around Sorrento that the sirens tried to lure Ulysses with their enchanting

song.

Having reached Sorrento, we start our walking tour through the narrow streets, old decumani (east-west oriented roads) that

have now been brought to life by the many shops displaying their merchandise. We then follow a route from Piazza Tasso -

where there is a statue of Torquato Tasso the famous Italian poet from Sorrento - up to the Sedil Dominova (the seat of

power), which represents the old "seat" where the nobility met to administer the city in the 15th century. Subsequently we

admire the Cathedral and the Church of Saint Francis with its adjoining cloister and gardens from where we behold the

splendid panorama of Marina Grande, Sorrento's own fishing port.

At this point, before going back to the ship, there is some free time that can be dedicated to shopping, to tasting the famous

limoncello liqueur made with local lemons, or simply to enjoying the fascinating atmosphere of a place which, not by

coincidence, is known around the world and appreciated by tourists for its natural and artistic beauty and its traditions.

Did you know? According to popular etymology, the place name "Sorrento" derives from "Sirenide", which was possibly a

name attributed to this area in ancient times because of the legendary sirens of Homeric tradition.

This excursion involves a lot of walking, it is therefore not recommended for guests with mobility problems.
