DAY 1: Whitewater Rafting: Pacuare River

Your Trek Travel guides will meet you at the Hampton Inn & Suites (Hwy 1 Airport Blvd, Alajuela, Costa Rica 1017) at 6:00 AM on the first day of the trip. You’ll shuttle to Siquirres for your first “Tico” style breakfast before driving to the banks of the Rio Pacuare. Considered one of the world’s most scenic rivers, it is truly captivating. Here you’ll meet your river guides, who will prepare you for the 2-day rafting adventure, coaching you in safety and paddling techniques for the Class III-IV rapids of the Pacuare. Tonight you’ll stay in bungalows nestled in the tropical forest abutting the river. Here, deep in the wilds - where jaguars, ocelots, monkeys and an astounding variety of birds roam - you’ll enjoy a gourmet lunch. Hike to a nearby waterfall or maybe just relax in a hammock and soak in the sights and sounds of the mighty river. This evening you’ll reconvene with your companions to savor margaritas made by your guides as they fill you in on the details of the adventures to follow. As night falls you’ll dine by candlelight and share stories and laughter with your fellow adventurers, before retiring for well-deserved sleep.

DAY 2: Whitewater Rafting: Pacuare River

Awaken to sounds of the jungle birds and the exotic fragrance of the tropical flowers this morning and enjoy a hearty gourmet breakfast prepared by your guides before embarking on your second day of rafting. As the river reveals itself, you will begin to appreciate why rafting down the Pacuare was named by National Geographic as one of the world’s top 10 river trips! Enjoy a delicious lunch along the river at an important indigenous site before taking a cool dip in one of the many natural pools you pass along the way. Later you’ll have a chance to relax and freshen up before being shuttled to the next hotel further along the Caribbean Coast. This evening is yours to explore the vibrant village life with plenty of Caribbean fun, flavor and hospitality for all!

DAY 3: Mountain Bike Basic Option: Playa Cocles to Playa Cahuita Lollipop Approximately 30 miles

Mountain Bike Avid Option: Playa Cocles to Playa Cahuita Lollipop with Playa Manzanillo Return Approximately 45 miles

Jaguar Rescue Center

Guided hike to “secret” local’s point

After a “gallo pinto” breakfast, your guides will fit and familiarize you with your bike, then it’s a short ride to the Jaguar Rescue Center, a foundation for the rehabilitation and reintroduction of animals to their natural habitats. You’ll visit with monkeys and sloths and even some big cats! Back on the bikes you’ll cruise through colorful villages before lunch at Playa Cahuita. Perhaps the catch of the day will tempt you as you take in the aquamarine sea. Next up, Playa Manzanillo, where you’ll discover the true meaning of “off-the-beaten path” as your Trek Travel guides lead a hike to their favorite “local’s secret,” a point with mind blowing views and Panama in the distance! This afternoon is yours to enjoy and see the town or sit on the secluded beach with a tropical cocktail to catch the last of the sun’s rays. This evening, you’ll hike through the hills to learn about the deep local significance of “cacao” while tasting local chocolates before a delicious fusion-style dinner.

Hotel | Le Caméléon Hotel | www.LeCameleonHotel.com

DAY 4: Private Charter Plane: Limon to Arenal

Mountain Bike: La Fortuna Airport to Arenal Dam Approximately 16 miles

Boat cruise across Lake Arenal

This morning you’ll bid farewell to the Caribbean in style as a private charter plane whisks you off to the home of the Arenal Volcano. A quick stop in La Fortuna for a lunch of your choice before riding toward Arenal Dam, a hydroelectric project run by the Costa Rican government which once provided electricity to the whole country. Enjoy breathtaking views dominated by the imposing (and sometimes active) Arenal Volcano in the distance as you pedal from the gentle green rolling hills. After the ride you’ll leave the bikes to hop on a boat and cruise across Lake Arenal toward your next hotel, nestled high in the Monteverde Cloud Forest. Tonight, you’ll sip on cocktails and delight in a special dinner at the hotel, admiring your first views of the Pacific Ocean.

DAY 5: Zip line & Tarzan Swing: Cloud Forest

Mountain Bike: Santa Elena to Cloud Forest Approximately 15 miles

The sky is the limit today - with an adrenaline-filled Cloud Forest canopy tour on Costa Rica’s longest cables with over 2 miles of lines literally taking you up, above and through the dense forest foliage! Ride solo - or with a partner - to enjoy a unique bird’s-eye view, soaring high above the Cloud Forest before enjoying thrilling descents back to the forest floor. After your zip-lining adventure, you’ll stop with your companions at “Sabor Tico,” our favorite locals spot for lunch, before heading off to explore the rugged beauty and panoramic views of Monteverde. Tonight, the town is yours to explore, but don’t forget to ask your guides for recommendations!

DAY 6: Mountain Bike: La Roca to Nosara Approximately 30 miles

Tico Family Beach Cookout

Your destination today is Guanacaste, starting with a shuttle to our friend Adrian’s family-owned restaurant “La Roca,” where you’ll snack before changing into your cycling gear. From here, pedal to the sea through small villages half hidden by tropical dry forests and teak plantations. Troops of howler monkeys greet you with their unique chatter from the treetops as you ride this undulating dirt road through the Guanacaste countryside. You’ll descend to the coast and arrive in Playa Garza, a small fishing village. Here, you’ll meet Pilo, a local fisherman, and his family who will host a beach cookout of just-caught fish and the freshest ceviche you’ll ever taste! Body surf some waves or sit back in Pilo’s hand-carved wooden lounge chairs and enjoy an ice cold Imperial beer or “pipa” - either is a great way to savor the charm and beauty of Costa Rica. Dinner will be served tonight at your boutique hotel in an open-air setting with magical panoramic views of the Nosara beaches.

DINING

Trek Travel scopes out unique and delicious dining locations, and we usually leave at least one meal

for you to explore on your own. If you have any special dietary preferences, be sure that you have

informed your Trek Travel Trip Consultant before you leave for your trip. We will do our best to

accommodate your dietary requests.

On our Costa Rica trip, lunches vary by region, and are a variety of “Tico” specialties featuring locally grown, seasonal produce. We’ll try traditional staples including “casados,” “patacones,” “gallo pinto,” “guanábana” and “ceviche.” Dinner is a semi-casual affair with emphasis on local food, with some options for international cuisine.

HOW TO GET THEREFlights | We suggest that you arrive at least one day prior to the trip start, which will enable you to adjust to the time zone and minimize the risk of missing the trip start due to flight-related delays. We recommend that you fly into Juan Santamaria International Airport (SJO), which is located in the town of Alajuela. Taxis are readily available at the airport. Our meeting location, Hampton Inn & Suites, is just under a mile from the airport and a taxi costs approximately $2 USD. Alternatively, a 20-minute ride takes you to downtown San José, costing around $12 USD, for those arriving early to explore.

We recommend booking a short flight from Nosara to the San Jose region to avoid a lengthy shuttle ride. The Nosara Airport is approximately 10 minutes from our trip end hotel and offers 2-3 daily flights to Juan Santamaria International Airport (SJO), ranging between $90-180. For those continuing on with internation travel, please allow adequate connection time. You will be required to check your baggage and clear security again. Also, please keep in mind, before departing Costa Rica, there is a $26 departure tax that must be paid at the airport prior to check-in, which can often add on an extra hour to your travels.

MEETING TIME AND LOCATIONHampton Inn & Suites | Alajuela, Costa Rica

Your Trek Travel guides will meet you at the Hampton Inn & Suites (Hwy 1 Airport Blvd, Alajuela, Costa Rica 1017) at 6:00 AM on the first day of the trip. You’ll transfer to Siquirres for a “Tico” style breakfast before driving to the banks of the Rio Pacuare where you’ll meet your river guides before paddling deep into one of Costa Rica’s most impressive primary rainforests for 2 days. Please have your overnight rafting bag easily accessible, separate from your luggage and be ready in attire appropriate for rafting.

If you will be late for the pick-up or are going to miss it altogether, please inform your guides. You

will receive an email a week before the trip start with their names and contact details. If you miss the

first day, you will need to take a shuttle to the Exploradores Rafting Center in Siquirres to meet the

group by 1:00 PM of the second day. If not, you may shuttle to the hotel in Cocles. Interbus offers

one-way travel for approximately $50 for the 5 hour trip (+506 40 31 0888.)

DEPARTING TIME AND LOCATIONBella Vista Mar Hotel | Nosara, Costa Rica

You will say farewell to your guides at 8:00 AM at the Bella Vista Mar Hotel. From here, you may

extend your stay or return to San José via shuttle or flight. We recommend a 1.5 hour flight from

Nosara on NatureAir at a cost of $130-160. Book far in advance as flights sell out and be sure to

check the baggage restrictions. Please remember that before flying out of Costa Rica, you will need

to pay a $26 departure tax.

ALAJUELADowntown Alajuela has a large daily indoor market, where you can find fresh produce and cheeses, a wide range of local products and various food stands with typical Tico foods. For a day tour, we recommend two things: Poás Volcano National Park or Doka Estate Coffee Tour. Poás Volcano National Park is an active volcano, whose summit reaches over 8000 ft, and is a highly visited site, featuring plenty of trails and an extensive center for visitors. There are many guided tours offered, most last around 5 hours and cost between $40-60 per person, including transportation. “From the seed to the cup,” we recommend Doka Estate Coffee Tour, located in the coffee capital of Costa Rica, Sabanilla, Alajuela. The farm belongs to the Vargas Ruiz family, pioneers of coffee production for more than 70 years. More information can be found on their website at www.dokaestate.com. We recommend the following accommodations for your pre-trip hotel:

Pura Vida Hotel | Apdo. 1703 | +506 2430 2929 | www.PuraVidaHotel.com | ~$105

Once a coffee plantation, this hotel is now in a lush tropical garden, surrounded by coffee and sugar cane plantations. The restaurant features local organic foods prepared in a Costa Rican, French, and Asian fusion style.

Hotel Buena Vista | Apdo. 760-4050 | +506 2442 8595 | www.HotelBuenaVistaCR.com | ~$85

This Spanish Colonial-style resort features a 360 degree, panoramic view of Poás, Barva, and Irazú volcanoes.

Xandari Resort and Spa | Apdo 1485-4050 | +506 2443 2020 | www.Xandari.com | ~$230

22 individually designed villas on a 40-acre plantation overlooking the Central Valley. The restaurant serves fruit and vegetables from their organic greenhouse, orchard, and gardens.

PLAYA GUIONES, NOSARA

Playa Guiones is a gorgeous, four mile stretch of white sand known best for its consistent surf break and beautiful sunset. Time is counted in tides and rides, not minutes and hours. Even without the surf, families and other travelers here will be captivated by the tropical idyll - exotic butterflies and birds, howler monkeys, stunning sunsets and laser-bright constellations. At low tide you are able to walk the whole bay from north to south. If you head far enough south, you’ll find several large tide pools that make for excellent snorkeling and relaxing. Past those tide pools you will come upon Playa Rosada or Pink Beach, which is the area’s true gem, an amazing place to spend a few hours before the tide returns. To the far North end you will see Punta Pelada and the old Hotel Nosara, with its unique spire, no longer in business, but worth the walk to explore. In addition to the natural beauty and simplicity of Guiones, the village has many locally owned shops with handmade items and organic cafes to refuel the body and chat up the locals. We recommend the following accommodations for your post-trip hotel:

Harbor Reef Surf Resort | Playa Guiones | +506 2682 0733 | www.HarorReef.com | ~$125

Tucked away in the astounding beauty of the jungle, just footsteps to the sand and one of the world’s most beautiful and uncrowded beaches, Harbor Reef is the essence of “pura vida,” surpassing anything you can imagine in a vacation in paradise at a surprisingly reasonable price. Situated a stone’s throw from the pristine beach of Playa Guiones and only moments from the village, Harbor Reef is ideal for both a surfing and beach adventure or a tranquil experience spent relaxing in the hammocks sprinkled within the grounds.

Living Hotel | Playa Guiones | +506 2682 5201 | www.LivingHotelNosara.com | ~$85

Looking for something more affordable, but with convenience and charm? Living Hotel may be just what you’re looking for. Nestled in the lush jungle of Nosara, and centrally located and close to a variety of restaurants, hot-spots for live music, surfing, yoga and a short walk to the beach. Grab fresh juice from the Cafe and lounge by the pool or take a stroll to the beach, Living Hotel offers an ideal place for relaxing and resting, accessible to all that Nosara has to offer.

Bella Vista Mar | Nosara | +506 2682 5015 | www.HotelNosaraCostaRica.com | ~$100

This boutique hotel is nestled on the hillside and truly lives up to its name. No matter where you are on the property there are sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean and of the two beautiful beaches, Playa Guiones and Playa Pelada. The constant breeze and swaying palms add to the tropical ambiance with sighting of pizotes, iguanas, parrots and monkeys to complete the picture!
