Dear Colonial Williamsburg Travelers:

When the Panama Canal opened in 1914, it fulfilled a dream that had begun more than four hundred years ago with the conquistadores: to link the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Please join us next January to commemorate this engineering miracle as we sail from Costa Rica to Panama aboard the elegant Sea Cloud II. As David McCullough wrote in The Path Between the Seas, his masterful account of the canal’s creation, “The fifty miles between the oceans were among the hardest ever won by human effort and ingenuity, and no statistics on tonnage or tolls can begin to convey the grandeur of what was accomplished.”

We are delighted that Anna Pavord, the distinguished British garden authority, will accompany us on this voyage. A riveting lecturer, she is the author of many books including the bestselling The Tulip: The Story of a Flower That Has Made Men Mad. Also joining us will be Jeremy G. Larochelle, Associate Professor of Spanish at University of Mary Washington, who will offer insights on Latin American literature and environmental issues.

Begin in San José, Costa Rica, where a welcome dinner is arranged at the Gold Museum. Discover the nearby El Silencio de Los Angeles Cloud Forest Reserve, home to exotic flora and fauna. Embark the elegant Sea Cloud II in Puerto Caldera and sail to Manuel Antonio Park, named one of the world’s most beautiful national parks by Forbes magazine. Spend a morning in Corcovado National Park, exploring some of its 13 ecosystems. After a full day at sea, tender ashore to Isla de Coiba, home to Panama’s largest marine reserve. On tiny Isla Iguana, snorkel and bird-watch. Spend two days in Panama City for an architectural tour of its Old City and visits to a contemporary art museum and the new Bridge of Life Museum in a building designed by Frank Gehry, pending completion of its construction.

Spend a day transiting the Panama Canal to Colón. View the immense steel gates that open to let ships into various locks, which raise and lower the vessels to access man-made lakes. The following day, sail through the densely forested islands of Bocas del Toro, tendering ashore for a private reception by the owner of a botanic garden. Disembark in Puerto Limón, Costa Rica, and enjoy a nature walk in the Veragua Rainforest before

concluding in San José.

We hope you will join us to experience firsthand both the grandeur of this man-made wonder and the splendor of the surrounding natural wonders. This exceptional program will be cosponsored by members from the alumni associations of the University of Mary Washington and Harvard University.

Sincerely,

Forrest WilliamsonDirectorColonial Williamsburg Cultural Expeditions
