Costello Building Blocks- Weekly Happenings: March 23-March 27, 2015 Description KDI’s Plan-Do- Review PLANNING Time, WORK Time, RECALL TimeThis three-part sequence is unique to the HighScope Curriculum. Occurring daily, it includes a 10- to 15-minute period during which children plan what they want to do during work time (the area to visit, materials to use, and friends to play with); a -minute work time for children to carry out their plans (or shift to new activities that interest them); and another 10- to 15-minute period for reviewing and recalling with an adult and other children what they've done and learned. Easter/Spring BingoEach child had a bingo card with different Easter/spring pictures and symbols on them. When the teacher described the picture or symbol, the children’s job was to search their board for that picture or symbol. If they had a match, they used a bingo marker to cover the square. When their board had a bingo going horizontally, vertically or diagonal, they yelled out “bingo”! Hatching an Egg {Science}- Using “growing chick eggs’ that hatch and grow when you place them in water for 12-24 hours, we placed our eggs in water and made a prediction of what would happen while it was in the water. · Throughout our time in school for the next two days, we observed what was happening to the egg. After the egg had hatched and finished growing, we concluded what happened throughout the hatching and growing and communicated our ideas within our small groups. Physical: fine motor skills Language/Literacy: comprehension, speaking, vocabulary, concepts about print Math: number words and symbols, counting, measuring, part-whole relationships, data analysis Science: observing, classifying, experimenting, predicting, drawing conclusions, communicating ideas, natural and physical world Social Studies: decision making 3. Painting with Plastic Eggs {Art}Using plastic egg halves, paint and paper the children used their eggs to create circle stamps on their paper. Children experimented with their egg stamp to create patterns/designs on their paper and explored what happened when they used multiple colors together. 4. Spring Salt Painting {Art/Science}-

Using Elmer’s glue, salt, liquid watercolor paints and droppers, children created a design with glue, covered it with salt and then colored the salt with their choice of water color paints. 5. Egg Hunt-

Plastic Easter eggs were labeled with various stickers. The eggs were hidden throughout the classroom. Each child was given a sticker that was placed on their hand. The children had to search the classroom to find the egg that matched their sticker. Once they found their match, they brought the egg back to their small group area. Children were given the chance to discuss what sticker they had, where they found their egg, etc.
