Analysis of costume

Pop artists come across as they are always having fun by partying, drinking, dancing etc. This links to the way pop artists are dressed. Pop music uses very fashionable, stylish and trendy clothes to attract young teenage girls as fashion is important to them. The girls costume clearly reflects the fact they are feminine, fun and excitable. They dress cute and quirky to attract the reader. Here are images of what female artists wear: skirts, shorts, dresses, tops, heels etc.

As you can see from the previous slide, the costume of the pop artists are very bright and vibrant. These colours are not normal colours people would wear, which makes them stand out from the crowd. This links to happiness and excitement, and making use aware they are having a good time, giving a positive vibe. This also reflects the genre of pop as it is up-beat music.

Female artists wear tight clothing to show of their slender body figure and to give young girls the encouragement that they can be just like them. They do it to show that what they are wearing is feminine and glamorous. Also, by doing this, it is making young girls think "Wow, I want to be like her". This is then causing them to believe that by purchasing the magazine, it will make them look like that artist. Though, some artists wear bright princess looking clothes to reflect the types of songs they sing and to reflect the fairy tale image. The image on the left is an example of Katy Perry dressed up as a beautiful princess which is attracting the target audience's attention.

Female pop groups use a symbiotic link of wearing the same colour of clothing or the same type of clothing. This is to show the bond between each person within the girl group However, they are not wearing the same item of clothing to show their individuality and that they are their own person. This is showing their confidence and positive self-esteem. For example, in the image on the left is of the popular girl group, Little Mix. They are all wearing sparkly black and gold clothes to represent their brand identity of the group and to

The image shown on the right is an example of each member of the group wearing the same type of clothing. In this case, they are all wearing denim. This also links with the season of the image being taken. We know they are representing a summer look and showing young girls how they can wear denim in a stylish way.

make them memorable. It is making girls aware of what is trending at the moment. The glitter is representing the theme of Christmas, giving young girls an idea of what to wear for the celebration.

Pop artist normally wear heavy make up to show their beauty and glamour. It is important young female artists have a good quality appearance to attract more young girls. They use bright, glowing make up to stand out and to show that the artists they are having fun and living life to the full. They use the make up to show the personality of the artist/band which is another reason to attract the readers attention. For example, on the front cover on the left, the magazine has used a red font to make her lipstick stand out more. This is also making the target audience think red lipstick is now in style, convincing them to wear red lipstick.

High-heelsHigh heels are very common part of the costume for a pop singer to wear. This is to bring out their femininity and make them look more glamorous and beautiful. It also brings out their personality of being fun, girly and bubbly. They wear bright heels to represent they are pop singers. They wear these bright shoes to stand out and make themselves look taller. This is convincing the target audience to wear high heels as they are girly and fun, just like the pop artists/bands.

Boys costumePop boys dress a lot differently to the girl artist/bands. The males dress quite casual but still stylish. They dress as how boys would dress up on a normal day out. Though, they still look stylish and trendy which makes their costumes effective. It brings out their masculinity and to show they do not need to dress up massively to attract the target audience. Each of them wear clothes that stand out and make them look attractive even more. This links to their personality of being young, humorous and happy boys. It shows they are having living life to the full and have no low self-esteem in their life, just like young teenage girls. Though for instance, if they were to constantly wear suits, this would show seriousness and formality.
