D45 Bodice circa 1783-1800 "Directoire" Style bodice of rose and gold changeable or "shot-silk;" maroon stripes.

Long sleeves, low neck, short tails, collar, double fronts, trimmed with plaited silk

touche. Contemporary common pin with round head in collar.


D93 Bodice 1865 -1875 Basque style bodice, long sleeved, beige silk tafetta with a small print of lavender

flowers, silk and cotton lined. The buttons in the front are covered in lavender tafetta

as are the front and back inserts, the sleeve binding, the neck and all around the

bottow of the garment. Beige and lavender cord trim around the neck. There is also

cord trim on sleeves with two tassels on each. The cord has a bow and two tassels.

Tag reads 'silk basque which belonged to Miss Abby Matilda Storer about 1860, gift

of Miss Agnes Storer 1925.' Other side of tag reads 'bodice, D93, period 1865-1875.'

D426 Bodice circa 1860 - 1869 Black silk bodice with vertical stripes and floral design woven in and also has

bunches of bright flowers embroidered on the material. The bodice comes into a

point back and front. It has covered buttons, The sleeves are elbow length. The

neckline has been altered form a high neck to a v-neck. Embroidery apparently

Chinese.

D427 Bodice circa 1900-1910 Blouse or "shirt waist" of cream colored satin, pleated front, eleven buttons, high

collar, bottom looks like an attached cumberbund. Snaps and hooks, lace stitching

on cuffs and high collar, collar fastens taffeta on edge of cuffs. Black trim around

collar. Back pleats have big flower design embroidered. Attaches in back. Trimmed

with applique embroidery.

D432 Bodice circa1907 -1912 Sheer bodice made of lawn with many fine tucks in the front and back as well as the

sleeves. Insertion on the sleeves, around the neck and all seams. High boned neck,

leg-o-mutton sleeves, gathered into a narrow waist, buttons in back with tiny star

covered buttons that match those on the sleeves. Fastens in back, boned collar.

D433 Bodice circa1907 -1912 Cotton lawn bodice trimmed with heavy lace insertion about two inches on back and

front. Same trim on the cuffs. V-necked yoke front and back. Eight inch tucks of the

lawn material, front and back, and at the cuffs. Seams are put together with very fine

insertion and the buttons at the back are Irish lace covered.

D502 Bodice circa 1875 -1925 Fine gray and black silk bodice with fabric on giadonal panels next to vertical stripes,

stand up collar, slits at side seams, covered button panel in front, buttons missing.


D520 Bodice circa 1890 - 1899 Cream colored bodice with square neckline. The front is lace with silk that is draped

over it in the center with two bows. Sleeves and back are silk. Sleeves have lace

trim. Bows on each side before shoulder, in front and below shoulder in back.

Bodice comes to a point in front. Fastens in the back and is pleated. Note from

Donor: Waist of heavy ivory satin with lace trimmings. Part of my ballgown of 50

years ago. The skirt was in 9 gores of bell shape. 6 yards around bottom. Long kid

gloves worn with it.

97.5.12 A,B Buckle, Belt Undated Two piece belt buckle with identitcal rectangles of dark resin with raised copper

design on each. Fittings on back are of white metal. Hook on piece A is designed to

fit into missing loop on piece B. "VIIIL" on the side of each piece.

01.325 Busk circa 1815 Engraving is done in four colors: red, green, brown and gold. Scallop design around

trees, colonial house, basket of flowers, entwined hearts, a cross and a bell. Notes

Christian motif; double cross is unusual; color is pigment, green is verdigris, black is

lamp black. Corner of top left is missing.


01.326 Busk circa 1815 Surface of the rectangular whale bone is etched in black ink with figures of a bird on

a branch, a sheaf of wheat, a peacock, a flower, a man embracing a woman, rear

view of a woman with a basket bordered with fruit and flowers. On reverse side:

flowers, circlet of leaves, bird on a branch, female figure, and arch of leaves with

flower at the top. Notes from Stuart Frank's visit November 4, 2009: Has two sides,

which is less common; space for name or saying; grape motif; made of panbone.


01.328 Busk circa 1815 Front of rectangular piece of whale bone is engraved with a temple-like building,

windmills, a basket with a pineapple, a spouting whale, birds and an anchor, and two

sailing ships. Notes from Stuart Frank's visit November 4, 2009: Small, not flexible;

nautical theme; brig, sloop, Parthenon; most likely made Newport or Warren

because of the speckled whale.


01.329 Busk 1820-1840 Rectangular shaped whalebone, inscribed in script: "du corset les liens sont

rompus/voici l'inutile baleine/ou ses charmes sont en prison/(parny)" Notes from

stuart frank's visit november 4, 2009: Could be french; quote translated as: "the

corset lines are broken Here is the useless whale And yet these charms are in

prison." Poem is from evariste de parny, late 18th, early 19th century french poet.


01.345 Busk circa 1850 Rectangular-shaped whalebone with scalloped edge. Inscribed in three colors: red,

green and black; designs include a church with a weather vane, clock on church is

boat owned and raced by Harold Vanderbilt around 1939. Later owned by Matthews,

VIM was an America's Cup contender in 1958.
