Reading through the mag, as I always do, I was mildly amused at Vic saying he was happy to be back in warmer Hillcrest after being in the Midlands. The North Coast must practically be like visiting the equator, then! But overall, we are so blessed in KZN to miss out on those icy cold winters!

It is always exciting to see the growth of Cotswold Downs Estate – wow! Three hundred homes by the end of the year; when we started this mag for the estate there were only five residents!

The growth, a new clubhouse, many events happening and of course, we can’t forget the FABULOUS golf course…is what makes this estate so very special! We loved the story how two residents met on a walk and ended up starting a business together. Sounds so similar to how this very business of mine started. Estates bring people together and somehow you will always find that person or persons who just perfectly fit in with your family.

Until next edition, we look forward to meeting more neighbours!

Estate manager’s letter

The chilly bite of winter has now really set in. Amazingly we have already passed the longest night of the year but it will continue to

get colder until sometime in September before we can start feeling the effects of the summer again. Not that we can really complain with this glorious weather we have in the Hillcrest area. We have just spent a few days just up the road in the Midlands, and early morning temperatures were at minus 3 degrees. Lovely to get back to the warmth of Hillcrest.

The past couple of months have been rather interesting on the Estate, highlighted by the Kloof Conservancy Indigenous Open Event which took place over the weekend of the 16th & 17th May. This event saw an invasion of about one and a half thousand visitors over the two days. See the article and pictures in the magazine.

As of mid-June Cotswold Downs has 198 completed homes with another 92 under construction. By the end of 2015 there could be 300 homes completed and occupied.

The Telkom team is now putting in a big effort to get all residents connected on the fibre-to-the-home [FTTH] system. The conduit backbone has been laid throughout the Estate and the actual fibre is now being blown through these conduits. Cheltenham Village is done and most homes there are connected. It is hoped the activation of the system will happen soon. The deadline date for all existing units to be on-line is the end of August.

The C.D.M.A. Annual General Meeting was held on the evening of Tuesday 23rd June in the Club Cart Barn. Once again it was a chilly evening but we still had the best turnout ever on Cotswold Downs with about 130 persons

packing in. Hopefully next year’s meeting will be in the new Leisure Centre, which seems to be progressing well.

The meeting went off very well and with Leon Trickett and Casper Nice standing down two new directors were elected and Jack Kirton re-elected to the Board of Directors. We welcome Gary Sweeney and Peter Hyman to the Board. Thank you gentlemen for coming forward to do your bit for the Estate; may your deliberations be short, meaningful and successful for the Estate as a whole.

Stay well,Vic Bonsor

Cotswold DownsHOSTS THE KLOOF CONSERVANCY ANNUAL INDIGENOUS OPEN GARDENS WEEKEND.

I believe that Cotswold Downs can be well pleased and proud of the response to being the Kloof Conservancy’s Open Gardens Weekend.

Admittedly it was not really “open gardens” but more of an open Estate.

Visitors wandered into the Estate through the beautiful rehabilitated Grasslands by the 4th & 2nd Tee boxes and down to the Cheltenham

Ponds. At that spot there was a large Marquee set up where tea and some delicious cakes were consumed by the Visitors. Nearby was a smaller

tent where chicken or boerewors rolls were on sale. Throughout the weekend these were consumed as fast as they could be prepared.

Page 9: Cotswolds Winter 2015

Cotswolds 9

Nature

The visitors walked the paths around the ponds and then the more

adventurous took the new Riverine Trail which follows the stream to the

bottom of the valley near the new Club site and back up another stream

and into Cheltenham again. This trail with its bench rest spots and the

viewing deck at the Waterfall got high praise from everyone who took the

time to walk it. We hope Residents will use Riverine Trail often.

Some groups took the buses to visit the Aloe Garden or to take the guided

walks on the trail through the Tewkesbury forest. These groups were led by

top tree experts such as Richard Boone and others, among them our local

boy, Wilf Sperren. Even the experts had some fun when Richard found an,

as yet, unclassified tree in our Forest. He will be visiting again to show

us the tree so that we can study it during its annual cycle. Regrettably our

record beating Quinine Tree. [Rauvolfia Caffra] which we claimed was the

biggest of the species in South Africa had been blown down in a storm but

even then it is still a site to see as are the large Red Beech Trees.

The other area of a lot of interest was the new Butterfly Park at the edge of

the Heritage Forest where during last summer we planted 576 new plants

that attract butterflies. On the weekend the renowned Butterfly expert,

Steve Woodhall, was in attendance and took interested persons for short

walks to point out and identify the various, and surprisingly big variety, of

local specimens. Steve was very excited when he found a specimen of the

Rare Fig-tree Blue on the day of the event.

Something else that added a spring to the event was the “Music by the

Ponds” in the middle of each day. On the Saturday it was the KZN Wind

Orchestra that provided the music and then on Sunday it was the turn

of the Thomas Moore School Band alternating with the various school

Marimba Groups. The music was delightful on both days and appeared to

be really appreciated by the audience sitting on the banks by the ponds.

Maybe this sort of thing needs to be done more often for the residents to

enjoy.

Cotswold DownsIf I told you that the Cotswold Downs Estate was a magical place in

which to live, you probably wouldn’t argue with me, but possibly

you haven’t yet discovered all the reasons why this is so. Residents,

Cherese Duffield and Ashleigh Roche, however, can certainly tell you

why they love it here. They met when they were both walking with their

families near the 16th hole of the golf course on the estate and discovered

that they live only two houses away from each other in Deerhurst Link.

They chatted briefly about the wonderful sea view, what an excellent

environment this is for kids to play in and the close-knit community feel of

the area.

Cherese and Ashleigh are both busy moms, with two children each who

they love bringing up on the estate, but they’re moms with a difference.

Their business partnership started soon after their friendship had begun.

Cherese’s maternity leave came to an end (as all good things do) and she

made plans to go back to work, leaving three-month-old Madsen in the

care of a nanny. The nanny never arrived, however, and Ashleigh stepped

in to help find someone else for Cherese. (Proof, if proof were needed, that

Cotswold Downs really does have a help-each-other-out ethos that you

wouldn’t find in many other estates.)

As the pair began to spend more time together over coffee, they discovered

that they both have experience in marketing and promotions. Ashleigh had

her own company so that she could be at home more often with her sons,

and Cherese had built up relationships with clients that would benefit from

the company too. They decided to merge their talents and created a new

company, which they named PinkAsh — pink being Cherese’s favourite

colour and Ash being Ashleigh’s nickname.

As soon as they had taken their decision, things really took off and they

signed their first contract with a new client the very next week. Their

company has only been going for a few months, but they have already

offered their promotional services to several well-known brands, including

MTN, Unilever, Guess and Clover.

This estate has proved to be the perfect spot for this dynamic duo and

it seems that from here on in, they can only grow both as friends and

business partners as they enjoy the ease with which they can pop in for

a chat or to enjoy a glass of red wine or, of course, go for a walk on the

quiet, friendly streets of Cotswold Downs to talk business.

The Roche familyMark and Ashleigh built and moved into their dream home in Cotswold

Downs in October last year, when they were expecting their second son,

Jenson. Mark hails from Wexford, Ireland and has been married to Ash for

six years. They have two sons, Jack and Jenson. Ashleigh is a qualified

aircraft load master and moved back to South Africa after 10 years in

Ireland. On her return, she could not get into the airline business in KZN

and would have had to go to Johannesburg to find work. Instead, she

decided to choose another career path so that she could remain close

to her family support network in KZN, electing to go into marketing and

promotions as she had a background in dealing with people.

The Duff ield family Darryl runs his own architectural business and designed the home in

Cotswold Downs which he and Cherese moved into in September 2014.

They, too, have been married for six years and have a four-and-a-half

year old son, Cullen, and an eight-month-old baby boy, Madsen. Cherese

comes from a background of marketing and events, specialising in blue

chip clients, and has been in the industry for over seven years. Also in her

portfolio are consulting for web design and online marketing.

Plants suitable for Hedgerows

By Judy Bonsor

Pycnostachys urticifolia (other name is Blue boy) – this for me is a ‘wow’ bush although it can appear drab at certain times of the year but when it does bloom in late Autumn it is spectacular. It has a loose growing habit and can reach up to 2.5-meters. The flowers which are a beautiful ultramarine blue each a single flower forming a cluster in a conical shape. Flowering takes place over a long period and attracts numerous insects among which

is the Carpenter bee who buzzes busily from one little flower to the next. Plant this shrub at the back of the hedgerow as it does grow tall. A light trim of the shrub after flowering and some fresh compost will ensure that this shrub will give you much pleasure for years to come.Author and Information obtained from Mandisa Kondle, Walter Sisulu

Botanical gardens.

Carissa Macrocarpa – other names Natal plum or num-num bush – a shrub ideal for keeping children and dogs in and the unwanted out. A shrub which ‘ticks’ many boxes and is a particularly good plant for security as it has a bushy growth habit with the additions of spines poking intruders either existing or entering your property! All around it is an attractive shrub with lovely, glossy, egg shaped leaves; it bears pure white flowers with the fragrance of orange blossoms followed by egg shaped fruit which change from green to

red when ripe. The fruit attracts all sorts of fruit eating birds to your garden and is delicious to eat, makes lovely jams and preserves. It is high in Vitamin C, magnesium and phosphates, in fact, an all-round useful shrub which requires very little maintenance apart from a trim to keep neat.Author and information obtained from Bernice Cardus, Harold Porter

Botanical Gardens.

I am the scribe at the architectural review meetings which not only deals with the design of the home but also the landscaping of the property. Landscaping not only enhances the home but also creates a more settled appearance to a new building.

In this regard I want to touch on the planting up of hedgerows on the perimeter of the property to create privacy and a division between neighbours, the road and/or the golf course area if there is one.

Page 13: Cotswolds Winter 2015

Cotswolds 13

Last but certainly not least and perhaps the plant which exceeds all expectations and ticks all the boxes: Portulacaria afra or porkbush or spekboom – this must be the treasure of all plants and it really does tick all the boxes. It is a water wise plant requiring no watering what so ever, relying purely on dew, mist and rainfall, it is an air cleanser and stand for a stand it is capable of absorbing more carbon emissions than a similar size stand of trees, in areas denuded of vegetation it may be planted to prevent soil erosion. Useful treatment remedies for human beings, the leaves can be sucked to treat heat exhaustion, crushed leaves can be rubbed on blisters and corns on the feet to provide relief, leaves may be chewed for the treatment of sore throats and mouth infections while the astringent

juice is used for soothing ailments such as rashes and stings and as a treatment for sunburn. A small sprig of spekboom placed in stews and soups imparts a delicious flavour.

It produces small star-shaped pink flowers borne in mass from late winter to spring and, I might add, flowers do well in flower arrangements and small posies. Every garden should have at least one of these plants, they do well in growing in containers and make a very good screening plant.Author and information obtained from Andrew Hankey, Walter Sisulu

National Botanical Gardens.

All the above information was obtained from the web site plantzafrica.co.za.Another informative site regarding natural swimming pools, vertical gardens, roof gardens is www.gorgeousgreenhouse,wordpress.com. it is about a Durban North home which is completely off the national grid, the swimming pool has been converted into a very attractive natural swimming pool which attracts all sorts of amphibians thus, in turn, attracting water birds and the garage wall now supports a vertical garden of note!

until next time stay warm, conserve water, save energy and take care of our planet, after all it does supply us with great abundance.

Pycnostachys UrticifoliaCarissa Macrocarpa

Portulacaria afra

Mackaya Bella or Forest bell bush – makes a very attractive screening bush preferring a semi-shaded to shaded position where it will grow quite contentedly if it is watered regularly. It has an upright growth habit and produces beautiful, large attractive mauve to white bell shaped flowers in terminal racemes which show up against the lovely dark green leaves. The beautiful Blue pansy butterfly caterpillars feed on this shrub.Author and information obtained from Thompson T. Mutshinyale, Witwatersrand

National Botanical Garden.

hoslundia opposita – other names orange bird bush, bird gooseberry – this hardy shrub is very useful for screening as it spreads laterally and can grow up to 1.2-meters, it produces minute white to creamy flowers starting from October through to February followed by fleshy, berry-like orange to red fruits which are eaten by both birds and humans alike, in fact, the shrub literally quivers with the foraging movements of the birds

GOLF NEWS

A Feather In Our Cap There is an excitement that flares up in my being when I know I am about to play Cotswold Downs. I get as excited about playing the course as a kid does about Christmas. Cotswold tests every part of your game, and other than hitting the perfect shot you need to think about where your miss needs to be should you miss those small landing areas. The course can be set up in a manner that makes it impossible to score when you miss the green and I have also played the course where you do not need to position the ball off the tee and anything basically goes.

The side – and uphill lies drive me crazy and as a result I have to think about where to hit the ball, (find a flat spot and win a DATSUN). Drive up to the first tee and my driver shouts at me: feed me, feed me, I wanna go for two! Such an inviting hole when you have bombed it 290 yards down the middle…such a shocker or a hole when you play 5 of the tee…it’s the perfect love-hate relationship and golf more often than not wins. I have made par here before, but more often than not I make a huge number on the first…down boy. Down boy. The second, third and fourth are like beautiful high performance cars, inviting you to take it to the limit, but just as you really get going a traffic cop pulls you over… Start at 1 and find yourself 4 down in no time as a result of the strokes. Really have to be mentally strong and play the patience game when playing match play.Number 5 - you biscuit! Love playing you, love playing you in changing conditions…your slopes on the green wanna make me climb walls.Six through 8 restores my faith in humanity…..so pretty…..so spectacular….so deceiving at times. Half-way house couldn’t come sooner, start working myself up for the great breaky on 7 already. Only just made it but, man! The wait is worth the while.

If ever there was a hole that has tested me 10 would be the one. What a hole….(I secretly hate her ‘cause I can never tame her) 11- 16 give you a false sense of security; so soft on the eyes yet so brutal when you don’t treat her with respect.17 and 18 are like forbidden fruit…desirable yet so bad for you.

And after a day’s hard “work” and intense concentration you head back to take stock on what the MISTRESS has done to you today. Whilst you ponder these thoughts you find yourself on the way to the PRO-SHOP to book another round (during our recent stay we played 90 holes in 3 days). We wanted to play other courses, but where do you go when you have played the best?

I have been fortunate enough to play many courses around the world and have met many fantastic people around the world, but none has ever come close to making me feel like I am at home as your team does. Every member of staff knows their part in making the experience as good as can be. Job well done, guys. I would rate you the number one course in KZN and would rate you in my top 10 courses in SA without thinking about it twice.

You guys rock!Thank you for the experience

Erhardt Scholtz

Recently we had a group out from the uSA who were so amazed by the course and the staff at Cotswold that they took the time to write to us and express their gratitude.

It is always an honour to get great feedback from golfers who play Cotswold Downs, especially those who come from abroad where they

have some outstanding golf courses. We have been extremely privileged in that we get a lot of praise regarding the golf experience at Cotswold Downs. We have a fantastic product in a beautiful setting, that Mandla and his staff keep in a remarkable condition all year round. it is always an honour to get great feedback from golfers who play Cotswold Downs, especially those who come from abroad where they have some outstanding golf courses. The New Club House

The construction of the new club house is well under way, with it only being eight days behind schedule. They have laid all the flooring slabs and will commence with the roofing shortly. With the lack of rain there really has not been too many delays so we can expect the completion of the construction by December. We will then be doing all the finer

interior details and if all goes well we hope to have a complete product by March next year.

It really is an exciting time and we look forward to meeting a lot more home owners who we trust will use the facilities. Above are some pics of the progress and we will update you from time to time.

Fairway Bunkers

You have just executed what seemed like a beautiful drive, and it winds up in a fairway bunker. Hitting a solid fairway bunker shot is difficult and can be very intimidating for many players. It is important to remember that the priority of all sand shots is to get the ball safely back into play; therefore one has to assess the situation.

The first thing to do is check out the lie you have in the sand and whether you have a realistic chance of clearing the lip of the bunker. If you have a good lie in the bunker, your main concern is to make sure the club you are using has sufficient loft to get the ball over the front of the lip of the bunker. You do not want to strike the ball perfectly only to see it smash into the face of the bunker and dribble back to

your feet. If your ball is buried then you may need to be realistic, play it like a greenside bunker out to the fairway and then approach the green from there.

The most important key in hitting out of the fairway bunker is that we want to hit the ball first. This is the opposite of the green side bunker where we want to hit sand first. Many amateurs will try to hit up on the ball and pick it clean out of the bunker, causing a scoop and hitting behind the ball. Don’t worry about hitting up on it, just hit the ball first and let the loft of the club get it up for you.

Dig your feet into the sand about an inch or so, until you have a solid base to swing from. Move your hands down on the grip, about the same amount as you have nestled your feet into the sand - this will help to prevent you from striking the sand first.

I recently had the incredible privilege of playing Cotswold Downs Golf Club in Hillcrest, KZN. I cannot express enough what a pleasure it was. Cotswold Downs is, for sure, my course of choice when in the Durban area. From a golf perspective, the course is brilliant. It is challenging, yet enjoyable. The entire course is maintained in pristine condition, but the greens are particularly elegant. From a people perspective, the course is operated by a world class staff whose customer service is beyond reproach. I cannot recommend this golf course highly enough. I would urge anyone who loves the game to play it at their earliest convenience.

Crawford Dougall/Hollard Pro Am Series

Each year Cotswold Downs hosts 5 Pro Ams all counting towards the KZN PGA order of merit as well as the National Order of Merit. The Pro Am series has been, and continues to be, sponsored by Crawford Dougall Insurance Brokers as well as Hollard Insurance.

With two very driven and passionate individuals at the helm Crawford Dougall is starting to make serious inroads to the golfing fraternity, offering comprehensive packages for both golf clubs and the individual golfer (they’ll pay you a generous sum for a hole in one!). Their club

packages offer a broad range of cover options to cater to any and every situation that may arise.

They are always friendly and willing to help and we are very fortunate and proud to associate ourselves with such a prestigious organisation. This relationship has grown stronger over the last few years and has become a tight partnership which we hope to continue for many more to come.

A massive thank you to Crawford Dougall insurance brokers and hollard!

Cotswold Downs Monthly Alliance This year saw us move over from running a monthly mixed competition to a straight forward monthly alliance competition once a month on a prescribed Sunday. The change in event has seen a great spike in support for the event and has given a lot of members and guests the opportunity to get beginner golfers to come and enjoy a competitive event. There is always a twist to the alliance format which keeps the excitement going with all players; regularly seeing the same faces coming back to support this fun event. Not to forget the players are treated with a lovely meal after their round which is all included in the cost of the event. The remainder event dates are as follows: 26th July, 23rd August, 20th September: 18th October and the 15th November.

Wakef ields British OpenA similar event for those members and guests who have played in the Cotswold Downs Masters Event. On the Sunday of the Wakefields British Open event which, this year, will be the 19th July, Cotswold Downs hosts our very own British open event where all golfers play off the official British open scorecard and score according to that card as opposed to the normal Cotswold Downs card. After the round the players enjoy a great meal and watch the final holes of the televised event to see who will be crowned as the 2015 winner of the gold medal, and champion golfer of the year.

Successful events

Don’t try to hit the shot 100 percent. Take more club and hit the shot 60 or 70 percent of full. This will make it easier to keep your lower body more stable during the swing and hit the ball more solidly. Keep your sternum/the buttons on your golf shirt at the same height during the swing. Up and down movement reduces your ability to rotate, which will decrease your chance of striking the ball first.

One of the real problems with the fairway bunker shot is that few practice facilities give us a chance to practice these shots and we

encounter very few of them on the golf course. Next time you are out late afternoon playing a few practice holes, drop a few in the fairway bunker and try and get more comfortable and confident in playing this shot.

Greenkeeper’s RevengeThis annual event is the single chance each year when the greenkeeper shows players how generous he is throughout the year in terms of pin placements and the course setup. Pins are placed directly on slopes; some greens lack the presence of a flag and you may even find a pin in one or two of the bunkers. If that is not suspicious enough you may enjoy having to tee off from a water hazard off a 45 degree angled slope as opposed to the flat bent grass tees we are graced with. Be sure not to miss this event for a great laugh and to test your skills against the greenkeeper’s humour. The event will take place on the 16th of September which is the same day we finish our final Hollowtining programme for the year.

Pro Shop NewsAs with the many changes happening in and around Cotswold Downs, the Pro Shop too has had a dynamic change in the last month with Melville Muir joining the team! We are pleased to say he has thoroughly been enjoying his time here with the Cotswold team and we are grateful to have his expertise.

Further to Melville joining us, a new lady will be commencing employment as of the 1st July. She has vast experience in the golfing industry and we look forward to welcoming her to the team and introducing her to our wonderful members and guests.

We have launched an exciting new monthly raffle, Ashley Dell was the winner of the first raffle concluded on the 12th June winning a Ping Bag and Cotswold Downs logo cap. These raffles will continue on a monthly basis so be sure to take a ticket when you next at the Pro Shop.

Grant was putting together a four-ball for Saturday morning, so he decided to phone

his mate Brett.Upon calling him, Brett’s response was far from convincing: “I’m not too sure hey, I’m keen, but I might be busy,” he stammered.“Your wife giving you some trouble there,

bud?” Grant replies, sniggering.“I am the MAN in this house, and I decide

if I play golf on the weekends…” came Brett’s booming reply, followed by a quietly whispered, “…just let me check if I want to.”

As all of you are aware Cotswold have been upgrading our security over the past few months to ensure a much greater control over the access

to the estate.

We are currently observing over 4500 entries to access on a daily basis! This is a considerable amount of traffic for security to keep track of which necessitated an upgrade to more current and effective equipment to ensure access is being monitored correctly.

In that regard I would just like to cover a few aspects that many people will find useful in order to help them better understand the equipment and how to use it to your own benefit. With regards to registration as an owner. You are required to fill out a resident information pack which gives the association details of who you, as the property owner, are giving permission to gain access to the estate. This is generally your immediate

family (husbands, wives and children) and your domestic employees (maids and gardeners). We would also appreciate you registering your pets should you have any at the same time but don’t worry; we won’t permit them fingerprint access because we know just how much they love to gallivant when given the chance.

It is at this point many residents ask if they can put other “non-residents” onto the system to gain access. For example, “My parents fetch my children from school and drop them at our home.” We at the CDMA are not permitted to do this as those individuals are not property owners so in that regard you will need to apply in writing to the association and motivate why that particular access is needed. I would strongly recommend also when filling out this form that you supply your current mobile number as this will automatically register you on the Visitor SMS system (this we will discuss shortly).

Many of you are now used to using the fingerprint scanner to gain access to the estate but here are a few pointers to help along: Place your finger flat on the scanner and ensure you read the display in case your finger is not positioned correctly. The same position you registered your finger ie: angle and position is the same way you present your finger to the scanner.

Hold your finger down. The scanner takes a moment to read your finger, fetch your registered fingerprint from the system and compare the two. This cannot happen if the finger you are presenting is moving around.

Use the finger you registered. I know that sounds obvious but it is worth mentioning.

In terms of you inviting guests over to the estate, you are required to use the Visitors SMS system which is based off of your mobile number you provided to the association.

To invite a guest you need to SMS the exact format to the shortcode 31875. So for example if your guest John Smith is coming to visit you then SMS “J Smith” ( Initial space Surname ) to 31875. You will receive your code almost immediately which you then forward onto your guest. The guest needs to present that code as well as their valid driver’s license to security in order to gain access.

If you are not registered on the Visitors system and you try to book in a Visitor, an SMS explaining that will be sent to you. Please register as soon as possible.

Some mobile carrier and smartphones get a little too smart and when they see (31)875 they think it’s a Durban area code and fail to send the message as an incomplete number. I would advise that you contact your mobile carrier and ask them to rectify this on your account.

Cotswold is continually striving to improve our systems and our security to provide a safe and stress free environment for you to live in and enjoy. We thank you for your support and will continue to strive to make this estate one of the safest and secure estates in the country.

Should you experience any problem with the system please email details of the issue to Rachelle at [email protected]
