CULTURE CLUB: Mayor Rod Kendall addresses the crowd of hundreds who turned out to mark the Wagga Wagga Art Gallery’s 40th anniversary on Wednesday night.

Surveys to canvass flood management options

More than 250 art lovers from across the Riverina celebrated the 40th anniversary of the Wagga Wagga Art Gallery this week.

On Wednesday evening, the Gallery and its supporters enjoyed the launch of four new exhibitions brought together to showcase the rich cultural life of our region.

Alongside works from the Gallery’s

own collections, shows from the Wagga Wagga Art Society and ABC Open demonstrated the vibrant talents of artists and storytellers.

Acclaimed glass artist Peter Minson launched Evidence in Possession, an exhibition of works from the Gallery’s National Art Glass Collection, and praised the vision of the city and Wagga Wagga City Council in establishing and

maintaining, such a unique treasure. The event was opened with a great

performance by Mayliaa Aboriginal Dance Group and finished with the Twilight Dance Troupe in the Gallery courtyard, along with a projection display of archival photos from the Gallery’s history.

“We are not just commemorating the anniversary of a single institution, we are

acknowledging 40 years of the growth and development of Wagga Wagga itself as a vibrant and creative city,” Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Rod Kendall said.

“I am very proud, as are my fellow Councillors, of the important role that Wagga Wagga City Council has played through these years in fostering the creative spirit of our community.”

This is a circus like no other – in an exciting contemporary performance, 360 ALLSTARS swap acrobats for breakdancers, a unicycle for a BMX and a juggling clown for a basketball freestyler.

Add in live music and this show at the Civic Theatre will leave you wanting more.

“I just wanted to make something really awesome,” director and “ringmaster” Gene Peterson said.

“And that was literally my selection criteria for the artforms featured in 360 ALLSTARS – awesome.

“BMX flatlanding, basketball freestyling, breakdancing, beatboxing, drumming and Roue Cyr … how many different types of awesome can we put on one stage?”

Always looking to take the show to the next level, Mr Peterson hunted down the best of the best in each artform, with performers coming together from the UK, Europe, Asia, America, Australia and New Zealand.

“It was like giving myself permission to think like a kid in a candy store and ignore the realities and restrictions that you learn to accept as an adult,” he said.

“I think that’s why this work relates to a younger audience so well. It’s got everything a kid would think is cool because I was thinking like a child when I dreamed it up.

“And hopefully that appeals to the inner child of our adult audiences as well.”

The show also features what Mr Peterson described as “an amazing lightshow, a killer live soundtrack, and stunning AV design projected across three video screens”.

The 360 ALLSTARS will hit the Civic Theatre on Wednesday 8 April at 7.30pm. To book tickets, contact the theatre box office on 6926 9688 or visit www.civictheatre.com.au.

International Women’s Day 2015 was celebrated with the launch of the Integrated Women’s Health Strategic Plan and a Q&A forum at the Civic Theatre last week.

The plan was developed in partnership with Wagga Wagga City Council, Murrumbidgee Local Health District, NSW Department of Family and Community Services, while the forum was a joint initiative of Council and Charles Sturt University (CSU).

“Council values its role in partnering and co-hosting with other key organisations, in order to encourage community dialogue of important issues, such as women’s health and gender equity,” Council’s Director Environmental and Community Services Janice Summerhayes said.

Hot topics at the forum included domestic violence, the lack of representation of women in high profile and political positions and the continued wage inequity experienced by women.

“Both the launch of the Integrated Women’s Health Strategic Plan and the Q&A forum were significant events in highlighting the impacts of gender inequity,” Manager of the Wagga Women’s

Health Centre, Gail Meyer said. “It is important to continue the conversations in order to promote meaningful and positive change in our communities.”

Chair of the Leadership Development for Women Committee at CSU Sarah Ansell

said about 350 people attended the Make It Happen forum.

“We were delighted to see so many people attend the event and help our expert panel explore gender equality through a regional lens.”

We seek a dynamic business professional to deliver key strategic objectives and provide leadership and motivation to a team of industry professionals.

Council consultation with the community is always important, but even more so when significant and life changing infrastructure is

being considered.Council will in the middle

of this year make its final decision on the levee bank upgrade. A decision (effectively) has been made to upgrade the Main City levee to a 1 in 100 year height.

No firm decision has been made for North Wagga and that is the reason why we have been holding a series of consultations over the last

fortnight. This decision will have a

direct effect on the lives of all North Wagga residents and on residents and businesses affected by flood events. It will also have an indirect effect on the remainder of ratepayers. It important you know how each option affects you and we get your feedback.

In these information sessions, many options have been presented along with a

list of pros and cons, a cost to undertake and an ongoing annual average annual cost of damage to North Wagga homes for each option. All of these options have been brought to Council at some time as possibilities.

The information attached to those options goes a long way to helping individuals understand the effectiveness of each option and whether or not they are good or bad for

that individual.The consultation sessions

have been all well attended and we have had some very effective feedback and requests for additional information. This information will all be uploaded onto www.wagga.nsw.gov.au/floodfutures but can also be sent to individuals if they wish.

If you could not go to an information session, I suggest

you contact Community Engagement Officer Lauren Fitzgerald on 1300 292 442 and she will register you and your preferred contact details and ensure that you are kept updated.

We will be seeking as many responses as possible to help Council make this decision.

WHAT IS IT? Class 4 Noxious Weed – Locally Controlled Weed.WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE? It is an annual or short-lived plant up to 75cm high. Flower heads are bright yellow surrounded by rows of yellow spines. WHERE IS IT FOUND? It prefers fertile well-drained soils and can form dense impenetrable stands that displace desirable vegetation.

Due to the spines, livestock and wildlife avoid grazing in heavily infested areas.HOW IS IT SPREAD? A single plant can produce 10,000 seeds, which spread through wind. The plant usually dies after flowering, but some root stocks may survive summer to produce rosettes in autumn. WHAT CAN I DO? Cultivations will control young plants

but needs repeating to control subsequent germinations. Slashing pre-flowering is effective if timed correctly. Hormone herbicides are effective on young plants.

This week’s pet of the week is Butch, an approximately one-year-old male Roman-nosed bull terrier cross.

This highly energetic, boisterous and strapping lad is a bit of a handful and is not real keen on other dogs. Butch is a bit of a wild child and would make a great addition to a family with a large back yard with solid, high fences.

Butch is looking for an active family so he can get his exercise every day and become socialised.

Butch can be adopted $291.18, which includes vaccinations, desexing, worming, microchipping, lifetime registration and a vet check.

You can meet Butch and his buddies at the Glenfield Road Animal Shelter from Monday to Saturday, 1pm to 4.15pm.

For more information you can contact the friendly Animal Management Rangers on 6971 4651or visit www.rescuerex.webs.com.

Meet ButchThere’s less than a week left to RSVP for the

Earth Hour Plus One event, which will be held at the Museum of the Riverina Botanic Gardens site on Saturday, 28 March.

More than 7000 cities in 162 nations will take part in Earth Hour this year and Wagga Wagga City Council is collaborating with the Australian climate change action group 1 Million Women to host a free event next weekend.

Local members of 1 Million Women or anyone interested in learning about the impact of climate change will hear from Dr Andrew Wallace, who will present the latest findings on how climate change will impact the region and how you can make a difference.

“Women make 85 per cent of the consumer decisions in the household, so if we can empower

women to make small but smart changes to the way they purchase and consume then we can make a real difference,” Council’s Environmental Education Officer Alice Kent said.

“Following the presentation by Dr Andrew Wallace, participants will enjoy wine and cheese by candlelight as we join millions of people around the planet to mark Earth Hour.”

The Earth Hour Plus One event will be held from 7pm to 9.30pm at the Museum of the Riverina Botanic Gardens site.

Earth Hour itself will take place around the globe between 8.30pm and 9.30pm.

To RSVP for the Earth Hour Plus One event, contact Janette Downey on 1300 292 442 or [email protected] by Wednesday 25 March.
