The Balranald Interpretive Centre is on track to be open for the key January visitor period following Council’s resolution at its Ordinary Meeting on 19 August to appoint Armsign to provide the design and installation of the Interpretive Pavilion. General Manager Aaron Drenovski said “the appointment of Armsign was another critical
step in the development of this project. During the discussions at the meeting, Council was advised that the building works were essentially complete, landscape designs are in progress, the café is to be fitted out by the end of September, a draft design for the playground has been completed and the new bus
shelter design is complete. Mr Drenovski said “having completed most of the design elements, works orders are being prepared for trades and the transformation of the site subject to the availability of trades should be complete by Christmas.”

As the final step in Australia’s move to digital-only TV, some TV channels will change frequencies in Balranald and Euston. After the channels have changed, you will need to retune your digital TV, set-top box or digital TV recorder to find the channels that have moved. If you are missing a channel on or after Euston’s retune date of 27 August or Balranald’s retune date of 24 September, you should retune to ensure you continue to receive all available free-to-air digital channels. Retuning is simple – for most systems press the “menu” button on the remote and follow the prompts to retune. If you have difficulty retuning you should refer to the manufacturer’s handbook, ask a friend
or family member for help, visit the Digital Ready website, www.digitalready.gov.au/retune or call the Digital Ready Information Line 1800 20 10 13 from 8am to 10pm (AEST), 7 days. If you find channels haven’t changed, you may be receiving a signal from a different TV transmitter. You can check to see which channels should have changed in your area by entering your address into the ‘get retune info’ box on the website. In some cases, certain digital equipment will automatically retune itself. This means you won’t need to do anything.

Balranald received a great boost to the township hosting day eight of the Variety Bash. With accommodation options booked solid, other bashers stayed with the locals and at the Balranald Central School Hall. Balranald Football Netball Club and Balranald Central School catered for the evening meal and breakfast respectively. The Variety Club made generous donations throughout the town, including $1000 towards seating around the netball courts and numerous contributions to the Schools. We are overwhelmed by the generosity of the Bashers, making a real difference in rural communities – thank you all very much.
I wish to thank and congratulate the organisers of the Forum on the drug ICE held recently at Tooleybuc, providing an insight into the severe problems relating to the ICE epidemic filtering into our small communities.
I would like to acknowledge and congratulate Emma Scott for being recognised for her achievements at the Olympics with a photo of her and her horse on the latest postage stamp.
Scott Connor, District Officer of the NSW Rural Fire Service and volunteers of the Balranald Rural Fire Brigade have undertaken an intensive cadetship program for students from the Balranald Central School. The students learned skills such as leadership, self discipline, self-reliance, initiative and team work, and knowledge of fire safety and preparedness. Congratulations to the twelve new Junior Cadets.

ICE Forum Epidemic a real eye opener
On Tuesday 12 August, the Tooleybuc sporting club hosted an information evening on the use of methamphetamine drug Ice.
Keynote speaker, Crios O’Mahony, project leader of Anex, a not-for-profit organisation of Penington Institute presented an insight into the world of an Ice user. Ice is a highly addictive substance that has rapidly increased in use throughout regional areas and is having devastating effects on users, their families and communities.
Amphetamines are stimulants; they create a ‘high’ in users including feeling excited, alert and energised. However they also produce negative effects that may include dry mouth, nausea, stomach cramps, irritability that may lead to violent behaviour and psychosis that may involve delusions and hallucinations.
Special thanks to event organisers, including the experts who shared their knowledge, Peter Dwyer for donating the use of his bus and Bronwyn Brougham for driving Balranald residents to the event.
If you or anyone you know needs support, please contact lifeline on 13 11 14

New Committee Members needed
Two men from Victoria had a lucky escape on 17 August after becoming disorientated whilst hunting illegally on Yanga National Park. The men had travelled downstream by boat from Redbank Weir and disembarked onto the National Park in search of feral pigs armed with compound bows. They ventured into the forest but quickly became lost and walked over 15km spending the night in the open before dialling for emergency assistance. National Park staff were alerted and managed to locate the men who were later questioned by police.
Yanga National Park staff and management are aware that this mode of conducting illegal activities on the park is not isolated and would like to remind people that patrols and surveillance cameras are used to monitor such behaviour. These men were extremely lucky; the outcome could very easily have been much worse as they had no food, water or warm clothing. National Parks & Wildlife service (NPWS) targets feral pests such as pigs in strategic programs. In the last twelve months ground trapping and aerial shooting programs have removed nearly 1000 feral pigs from the park. Illegal hunting interferes with these programs and is extremely dangerous to unauthorised persons who may be in the areas of these operations without NPWS officer’s knowledge.
As well as having to face the embarrassment of their predicament the men will also be handed a hefty fine from NPWS, and possible criminal prosecution.

Yanga wins Inland Tourism Award
Balranald can now boast an award winning attraction with Yanga National Park beating stiff competition to bring home a coveted Inland Tourism Award at the recent awards dinner in Griffith. Yanga’s historic homestead and iconic woolshed wowed the judges with new displays and fantastic visitor amenities.
Yanga now gains automatic finalist status in the upcoming State Awards to be decided in November.
