Over the past few years it dawned on me that there are close to 1000 counseling education programs in the US – over 600 of them CACREP-accredited. The American Counseling Association estimates that it has approximately 20,000 student members! Lit-erally every student in every program must go through an intern-ship to graduate.

Yet, for all of these realities, until now there has been no central resource for students to find counseling internships. Given the amount of money they’re paying to get educated, and the amount of people in the world who sorely need their help, this just didn’t seem right. It is our passion to help students transform from be-ing receivers to being givers.

CounselingInternships.com is the World’s Largest Counseling Intern-shps Datbase. We’re excited to partner with you.

Through our website, teaching experiences, and involvement with counseling mem-bership organizations, we’ve interacted with 1000’s of graduate students. Here’s a snapshot of what they had to say regarding internship placement experiences.

The State of Things

Finding an internship was one of the most stressful points of my degree program, as well as the one for which I felt most ill-prepared. I made a number of mistakes that could have been prevented with some guidance from someone more experienced. A centralized database of internships or jobs that could serve as internships would be have been helpful, especially if broken down by the type of environment provided, paying / unpaid / need to pay, etc. It would have also been nice to have an advisor - particularly one familiar with individual state policies.

The only assistance I received from my school was a list of sites former students have used. This was only after I contacted the field experience of-fice a couple times asking for some direction. There is literally no “process” in locating a site.

My program provided very little assistance securing an internship. Students are exposed to a 30 minute explanation of the entire internship process, and then encouraged to send emails with questions. The presenters are polite and in-formative about what happens after securing an internship, but we received no information on actually finding one. Online students already fight the stigma regarding online education. We need more assistance than this!

As counselor educators, we tend to believe we’ve walked a mile in our students shoes. From a clinical perspective, this is undoubtedly true. But today’s students face significant challenges germane to a fast-paced world and exacerbated by technology, the economy, and increased regulation and requirements for entry-level mental health postions. They need help. That’s just what we provide.

Actual Placement

“There is no reason for anything in business to exist if it does not serve the needs of people.”Bruce Cryer

A Looming CrisisIndustry leaders at the world’s largest counseling organizations report increasingly regular contacts from students panicked about placement. Google reports that there are some 15,000+ searches related specifically to the search terms “counseling internships” monthly.

Helping counseling students become successful involves commit-ment and follow-through. Our approach is tailored to the strategic process that has helped countless counseling students become suc-cessful interns, counselors, and people.

Access. Support. Place.

• By affording students access to a national database of counseling internship list-ings, their potential for success automatically skyrockets.

• The search inevitably gets tough, and students need support and mentoring to keep going and see the task through to its finish.

• When a student’s search efforts have gone awry, or the field in their area is just too narrow for conventional approaches, they need real placement assistance.

I’m a desperate mental health counseling graduate student. I have been searching, calling, emailing, and visiting potential internship sites with no success. I was a bit disappointed when none of the ten agen-cies I called returned my call, so I moved onto email-ing directors. Again, no replies. I then went out to five different places (portfolio in hand) and was ignored or put off. A little about me:

My schedule is very flexible, I’m willing to travel and I’m open to a practicum/internship anywhere at this point. I conclude my classwork in May and I am sup-posed to begin practicum this summer.

I am very worried that my graduation will be delayed. The word from other students in my town is that the local university has it in with all the agencies and they do no consider others. I feel like I am fighting a losing battle.

More from StudentsThe contacts we receive from panicked students are striking and speak to the reality of the problem most experience in finding counseling internship placement. Here’s an excerpt from an email we received from one such student:

We think you’d agree, this kind of scenario is terribly common. Especially for returning students who may already have a career in a different discipline, transitioning into a counseling internship with little or no help just doesn’t work. These are otherwise bright, capable, and high-acheiving students who simply need coaching and assistance.

We take into account counseling students’ qualifications, experience, and strengths and weaknesses in a broad perspective, while also considering their desires, avail-ability, and interests. After factoring in location, market for interns, and other data, we implement a plan of action.

Decision Time

Graduate counselors-in-training are returning to school in record numbers. According to the American Council on Education, 62% of graduate and professional students are enrolled in Master’s programs. This should really come as no surprise. The economy is down. The phrase “job security” is increasingly an oxymoron. New technology has prom-ised that real, first-rate education doesn’t have to be a major inconvenience. But seeing counselor education through to the very end is difficult.

The Problem: Counseling students generally approach the internship phase of their pro-grams at the last minute, with little insight, and expecting it to be easy. When no one on their list returns their call or makes an offer, they are completly stuck.

The Support: Encouraging, mentoring, and coaching is in our DNA. Helping students navigate the stormy waters toward place-ment is our calling and passion.

The Answer: Using real, live personnel searching for active listings, we find and secure actual internship opportunities rather than “possibilities” - i.e., every posting on our site corresponds to an actual internship op-portunitiy.

The Extra Mile: When coaching and mentor-ing isn’t enough, our placement team gets to work, using our experience and contacts to help place students in counseling intern-ships that meet their school’s requirements.
