Introduction

This packet includes materials to address the sub-skills students need to be successful at counting coins:

•  Coin Recognition •  Knowledge of Coin Values •  Skip Counting •  Coin Counting Practice Despite our best efforts as teachers, money will always give some of our students great difficulty. This packet includes materials based on the Magic Money method of counting coins. I have found this method to be a true lifesaver. It allows children to be successful with coins until they are ready to count coins in a more traditional way.

I hope this packet helps both you, and your students, with this very important skill.

Thank You,

Nicole Rios 3

Dear Parents, Your child has learned how to count coins using the Magic Money system. Please read the information below so that you can help support your child at home. •Each dot on the nickel, dime, and quarter is worth five. For example, a quarter has 5 dots on it. It is counted 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 as each dot is touched. •The half dollar has X’s surrounded by circles. Each part is worth five. So it is counted 5, 10........15, 20......25, 30 ........35, 40....... 45, 50 as the X’s and outer circles are touched. •Remember to have your child count coins in order from greatest to least value! 4
